Governor DeSantis has just announced that school will be closed an extra week after spring break is over because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We aren't sure if they will add to it, but schools are at this time scheduled to reopen on March 30th, 2020. We'll get back to you when we have more information.

"You hear that my girl? No school for two weeks." My mom asked me with her slight accent, but I was already up and dancing around the living room. 

"Ugh yes! I don't have to see those wretched kids anymore! You know how much I hated them, mom!" 

"Yes, yes, you talk about it all the time." 

My mom's from St.Lucia, a small island in the Caribbean. She migrated to New York from there. She met my dad in New York and they moved down here to start a family. They only had one child and that's me. I'm mixed because, well... my dad's white. The two sides of my family don't hang out much. I don't think either of them really likes the fact that the other married and had a kid with someone of a "different race", but my parents are hopelessly in love. 

"Aww, hear that babe? We won't be able to have our quiet time for the next two weeks!" My dad said as he kissed her on the lips. She smiled into the kiss and said, "Aww... but we had so much fun during quiet time." 

"Ugh. Can you guys go be a lovey-dovey couple literally anywhere else? I'm trying to stay hype for when Lucía inevitably calls me raving about how happy she is that we don't have to go to that insufferable place for an extra week." 

Lucía Lopez-Diaz. My best friend. I love her with everything I have. She's one of the only people I can actually stand in that school —scratch that, she is the only one—and makes being there 10x better. 

"Oh calm down Cara. One day you'll find someone who you love and who loves you right back and you won't be disgusted by us being all 'lovey-dovey.'" 

"Yeah right, mom. I'm in my junior year and there is a very limited supply of men who want me for anything more than my body." 

My mom went to say something to me but my dad cut her off. "No one tried to pressure you into anything right? I swear to god if one of these boys tried to touch you I'll-" 

"Dad! Calm down! You know me better than that and you know I wouldn't do anything I don't want to." 

"I'm just making sure. You can never be too sure with these kids." 

My mom laughed. "Alright, Simon leh we go make dinner, have fun with your friend baby." 

"You know how much I love when you use your accent, Jeniece." My dad said as he followed her into the kitchen. 

Sometimes I think my parents love each other a bit too much. I shook my head and ran up to my room to go talk to Lucía.

That was nearly three weeks ago. It's now March 30th and I'm sitting on my bed trying ever so desperately to finish my Calculus homework before it was due in about 30 minutes, 12 AM. 

They extended the quarantine date to May 4th, but now everyone's just convinced that we aren't going to finish our school year, well... at school. That'd be fine with me if it weren't for the fact that I've been bored out of my mind. There's only so much you can do, especially considering the fact that I have no siblings to entertain me. 

Lucía texted me earlier telling me she had to ask me something and I really hope it's able to cheer me up because this... isn't it. I told her I was doing homework and that I would answer her later to which she responded with "Imagine doing homework 🤡". 

I love Lucía, I really do, but she isn't the type of person to try really hard in school. Everyone assumes I'm not as well because I'm half black and black people have been given an incredibly stupid reputation of being dumb. It's really embarrassing when people get so surprised at my grades and smarts, but enough about that. 

I finally finished my work and decided to respond to Lucía. She texted me on Snapchat, which wasn't unusual because she was constantly on that app.

There was this guy Mason, or Ace as everyone called him, —pretty sure people only call him that because he thought it sounded cooler—who Lucía had talked to a couple of times while school was still going. They had also been snapping each other quite often according to her.
