A Dreamlike State
There is a Pyramid ahead that beckons us.
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
Our feet march in harmony, thousands, if not millions of steps that were not too heavy, yet not too light pounding through the desolate space. It did not matter, young or old, thin as a stick or more heavyset than a bag of bricks. It was the same monotony. Faces were deadpan, eyes lost in their thousand yard stares. We were all the same.
Free will is nothing. We are all the same. March. Step into a new future. That is what echoed in my mind, the words flat and voice bland.
I agreed. Of course I did.
After all, there was no such thing as free thought.
The crowd was thick, and the air stale. Everything was blurry, yellows and whites making for a bland picture.
I did not focus on the coarse clothing that caressed my skin.
There is no pain. There is no hunger. There is nothing. The voice crooned.
A part of my brain that was suppressed and starving for attention disagreed. It begged for me to look around, that this was all wrong.
I ignored it.
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
My chest was constricting, gasping for air. I did not give it permission. They did not give it permission.
I ignored it.
Free will is a myth.
But... if it's a myth, how did it come to be in the first place? If there is no such thing as free will, then who created the myth?
Shush, the voice told me. You're almost there.
Thud. Thud.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Thud.
I stopped in my tracks. What was I thinking?
Blinking my eyes, I finally allowed them to focus on the horrible reality. I was in the desert, surrounded by thousands of people... Thousands of people who hadn't stopped, who were all marching forward.
They were expressionless.
Fear gripped my heart. I turned to see what the goal was.
A pyramid stood proudly, and two people who I could only assume to be guards sat in front, their hands on items that I knew too well. Machine guns.
I took a step back, and then another, and another. No one noticed.
I ran.
I ran, and I ran, and I ran. I ran until my feet bled, until my lungs gave out, until my head pounded.
Collapsing, I took one last look behind, expecting to see the hordes that marched on, uncaring. But there was none left. Only a pyramid, standing tall, it's gaping mouth red.
The world was silent.
