The Proposal

"Katniss, I'm heading to the Meadow. Want to come with me?" Peeta asks Katniss from the hallway on a summer day in the District 12. Katniss brings her head up from the squirrel she was skinning in the kitchen.

"Of course. Wait for me to clean up." She replies. At Katniss' answer, Peeta walks towards the wooden door metres away and slips on his shoes, waiting for her. Katniss finishes skinning the squirrel quickly. Then wraps it up and stores it in the fridge where it will await further preparations for their dinner that night. She washes her hands and cleans up everything before making her way to the door where Peeta stands.

Peeta grabs her old yet new looking hunting jacket that hung beside his head, taking it off the hook and handing it to Katniss as she approached. Peeta gave her a sweet smile which he knew will change very soon.

"Thank you." Katniss says, returning his welcoming smile. She slips on her jacket while Peeta opened the door. Peeta let Katniss exit out first before following close behind, thinking if he should do what he has planned now. Yet he chooses to pursue on, his palms become clammy as it leaves the door knob once the door closes. His escape route now closed.

Katniss soon realises that she's walking at a faster pace than Peeta and decides to slow down, extending her hand out to him, a faint smile growing on her face. Peeta accepts her extended hand and instantly feels relieved. He becomes more excited yet his nervous emotions still linger somewhere around him.

In a matter of a few minutes they make it to the so called borders of District 12. They press pass the ragged left over fence and find their way to the meadow. Their meadow. Katniss settles herself down in a patch of fresh grass, waiting for Peeta's company beside her yet he stays standing.

"Wouldn't you want to sit over there?" Peeta suggests to her and points towards the treeline.

Katniss turns her head to look to locate what Peeta is pointing at. A wooden swing, simple yet elegant. That's what Peeta wants to think since woodwork isn't a great skill of his.

"I can't see why not." Katniss shrugs before adding, "It would be a nice change." Katniss stands up and follows Peeta to the awaiting swing.

"It's new and extra special you know." Peeta states and they edge closer. Peeta turns his head back to see Katniss slightly lagging behind. "Come on." Peeta encourages and extends is hand out to her. Katniss grasps his hand and quickens up her pace. Katniss wonders in her mind if there is anything bothering Peeta. But she quickly forgets the feeling when they reach the tree line.

It's shaded, but there's an amazing view of the meadow. Katniss realises why Peeta wanted to come to the tree line for a change. As they near the wood swing, Peeta's hand slides away from Katniss' and grips onto the ropes that make the swing compatible.

As his grasp tightens, his hands start sweating and he becomes uncomfortable standing. Katniss begins to grow suspicious when his grip on the swing tightens to the point where his knuckles begin to discolour. He silently states to himself that Katniss will probably now notice that something is up. He shakes the thought off by gesturing to her with his head to sit on the wood plank. Katniss begins to feel childish when she sits upon the wooden plank and wraps her fingers around the ropes either side of her to hold herself steady.

"You want a little push?" Peeta jokes, trying to edge away his discomfort of knowing that soon all will have to happen. But he doesn't know when he should do it; he decides that that is what terrifies him so much. Along with Katniss' reaction not being what he hopes it to be.

"Yes please." Katniss replies with a short laugh, gripping the rope a little harder, and lifting her feet of the ground. Finding it the perfect moment, Peeta only gives her a small push, needing her to turn and look at him.

As soon as he decides to let his hands leave the rope he gets down on one knee, being careful of the swinging object beside him. Katniss eyes are closed when she lets out a small laugh. But when she opens them again, she's rendered breathless. When Katniss' eyes meet Peeta's, his mind goes blank and all he wanted to say gets caught in his throat.

"K-Katniss, I..." He trails off, being interrupted by Katniss.

She becomes taken aback, opening her mouth to say something but nothing comes out. All she manages to do is breathe his name. She plants her feet to the ground, so the swing she sits on comes to a standstill. His hands begin to shake but her eyes looking into his press him on forward.

"Katniss Everdeen. Katniss, you know I have loved you sine I was 6. When you sang in the music assembly and every bird stopped to listen. That moment I saw you with your two braids, I knew I want you to be mine someday." Peeta begins and just continues to keep his eyes trained on Katniss, her presence helping him speak. Katniss can only think of one reason as to why he's on one knee, and it already makes her chest ache with hope. Her mouth is slight parted, she knows as much.

"Giving you that bread all those years ago.. I know helped you very much and I am very glad of my actions." Tears collect in his eyes as he continues. "Even though the major error that occurred in over lives, due to the games and revolution, it drove us together. We became a pair." Peeta pauses, slightly hoping that Katniss will say yes.

He probably will only be able to do this once.

Tears soon begin to prick at Katniss' eyes; she silently brings a hand to cover her parted mouth. She doesn't say anything, not yet. Peeta inches closer to her, and gently take hold of her free hand, resting on her lap. "I felt then our love was a bulletproof vest, it couldn't be destroyed but it was. The hijacking and the revolution separated us but when it was all over, we slowly grew back together and we still are, 3 years later. Little by little, each moment." A tears slips down his face, his own speech being emotional to not just his partner but himself as well.

Katniss tries to hold back tears, but a sharp inhale causes them to spill over. She manages to mouth his name behind her hand.

"Katniss Everdeen?" Peeta simply asks Katniss, trying to soothe her, yet himself as well.

"Yes?" She chokes out.

"You bring life to my soul whenever you're around me. Will you make me overjoyed -" He stops and digs into his jean pocket, pulling out the red and small box that is to determine their future in 5 words time. He pops it open with his free fingers and reveals the ring underneath to Katniss. More tears begin to stream down her face as he reveals a small, petite ring to her. Katniss' heart swells so much that she thinks it could burst. "-and become my wife?" Peeta finishes and silently lets go of the breath he didn't realise he was holding in. Now he just waits, for the one word that will transform then or destroy them. She doesn't answer straight away and he suddenly becomes worried that she's going to say no to him.

"Yes." Katniss manages to whisper. "Oh, yes Peeta!" She sobs, her voice showing vehemence. After all these years, they have rebuilt. Because of each other. They healed each other, and they are still healing now, but they've healed enough for this. They've healed enough to bond over everything that's happened. To forget and live on. She tells him as much.

When the word yes runs into Peeta's ears, he lets the tears run and a wide smile appears. After 15 years, he can finally say his dream has come true. Katniss Everdeen is soon to become Katniss Mellark. They've been through thick and thin and being able to still be by Katniss' side till this day is such a privilege to him.

Peeta grabs the small diamond ring from the box and slips it slowly onto Katniss' left ring finger, the realisation not sinking in. Katniss gawks at the small ring that now rests on her finger. But then her attention turns to her fiancé. She leans in and presses her lips to his briefly, before pulling Peeta into a tight embrace.

As she does so, Peeta stands up and takes her with him. Peeta sobs in happiness into her shoulder and kiss her cheek lightly. They are now engaged. Katniss lets out a laugh as he picks her up which dissolves into a sob quite quickly.

She buries her face into his shoulder, inhaling deeply as she trembles with euphoria. The sensation doesn't feel real to them at all. Peeta's fear has been lifted away and now can feel at ease. He spins Katniss around in his embrace, making their sobs stop for only a brief moment.

When he stops, Peeta chooses to stare into the amazing grey orbs that Katniss owns. Peeta's lips deeply connect to hers as his fight to not kiss her was won by his actions and not his mind. Katniss' slightly parted lips are soon met with his, and soon, their kiss becomes ardent. Katniss lets the feeling consume me. It's filled with relief and sentiment and something else. Something else Katniss has been afraid to admit, even after these three short years.

When Katniss pulls away from their fervent kiss, she manages to say it. The three word phrase and she repeats it to him over and over again until her lips crash into his once more. Peeta hearing Katniss says her three words over and over again brings more joy than he thought he could hold. He quickly separates their lips and sits on the swing. Peeta positions Katniss on his lap before bringing their lips together again once more, to finish what she started and he stopped. Peeta loves Katniss. She is his beautiful yet broken Mockingjay and believes that nothing will ever break them again. Because they are strong and their love can override anything wrong.

Katniss reluctantly pulls away, but she needs to breathe. Her tears of joy have not dried into her face quite yet. It's too soon. She feels fragile in this moment, but she also feels infinite. She finds it hard to decide on what she feels right now.

All she knows is that this love is here to stay. Forever embedded in their hearts and minds. Forever shed in their lamentations. Forever embraced in their kisses.

Katniss brings her hands to both of his cheeks, smiling hard. Another smile forms on his lips when she sees her smile.

Katniss is happy, probably ecstatic about the proposal. He's waited so long and now discovers that the moment he chose was perfect and nothing will ever beat that.
