Chapter Seven
The next day we trained and the day after that we were up and out in the tunnels after eating breakfast.
I had to admit the little training I gave them definitely had helped. We went a good distance without encountering anything and they weren't the least bit of tired. Well Casey was a little tired and Grace kept in pace with the guys and I had to give her credit for that.
"Rose I'm starving! Why couldn't we eat breakfast?" Fred whines behind me. I grab a granola bar from the backpack we brought filled with snacks in case we got hungry, and tossed it towards him.
"We did eat breakfast. Your dumbass just didn't bother to listen when I called you out to eat. So quit your whining and eat."
"Are we even close to leaving this place?" Casey complains.
"Trust me I know this place like the back of my hand. I know where we're going and believe me we are no where near leaving this place." We continue moving forward.
"Are we at least half way-" I stop walking. "What?" Tyler looks around alert.
"You didn't hear that?" I look at everyone questioningly, they shake their heads, huddling together as they lean in towards me gripping their knives looking around frightfully.
"Hear what?" Trevor asks.
"Silence." I laugh. He glares at me in return, lightly pushing my shoulder.
"Very funny."
"Seriously guys you need to quit you're whining and trust me a little." I sigh and continue walking forward. "And to answer you're question we're almost half way."
After an hour or so, I started to feel a bit strange. No, something just felt odd, as if someone was staring at us. I stop walking but this time everyone else doesn't.
"Okay Rose we get it. It's silent, now come on." Zach rolls his eyes at me.
"Stop." This time they do. I look around, checking both ways. Nothing there.
I look up. Something there.
"Run." They look up and stand there paralyzed. "RUN!" And this time they do.
I only had enough time to pull my gun out before it lunged at me. I hit the floor hard, the gun scattering away from me. I try reaching for one of my knives in my boot but it sees this and grabs my arm. I hiss in pain as its claws latch onto my skin.
If I can just reach my knife- "Master will be pleased to sssee you. Master ssayss he'll sssee you ssoon... And you're little friendsss too." He looks at the direction their running towards. I growl at him.
"And I'll be pleased when I kill you and your master." With my other hand I grab my knife and lunge it at its disgusting throat, causing blood gush onto my face. It gasps, holding its throat as if to stop the bleeding. I throw its body off me and wipe the blood from my knife, placing it back in my boot.
"What is that?" I knew Trevor wouldn't go too far, if he saw me in serious trouble I bet his dumbass would come and try to rescue me. I see everyone else jogging up to meet us.
"That ugly piece of shit is a goblin." I kick its leg. "They're so into their leader it's disgusting what they would do for him like send me petty little messages."
"And what message would that be?"
"Nothing." I smile. "Nothing of importance at least. Let's keep moving." Trevor looks at me suspiciously as well as everyone else. They know something's up but I avoid their questionable stares and keep pressing on forward.
As I wipe the blood off my face I try to comprehend what the goblin said. How can he know I'm not alone? It's not possible. I killed everything that came our way and kept alert so I knew nothing was following us. I followed my senses, yet he still knows.
Did he send some of his creatures to the elevator? If so they would've saw our backpacks. Fuck I should've dumped them. But what? Down the shaft? Either way they would have found them. And if we brought them with us it would have been extra weight and they wouldn't have made it far with them.
I wasn't careful enough and I should've been. After years of training I was still stupid enough to make a rookie mistake like that. I turn right, making sure I look at down every dark corner.
He's not stupid. I know damn well he's not. He would've planned something out by now. Something he knows I won't be able to handle. Something that would destroy me.
After a few more hours of walking and encountering nothing, I decide to call it a day and go to another safe house.
When everyone is eating around me I try coming up with anything that he may have planned. I know he will use them against me. If he knew they were here with me there's without a doubt he would.
He will torture them in front of me... He will do anything to crush me.
This is why none of his creatures attacked us these past few days...
"Rose!" I look up, everyone's staring at me with concern in their eyes.
"What?"
"I've been calling you're name for the past 5 minutes... What's wrong?" I look up at Grace with vacant eyes and smile. "Nothing's wrong. If you'll excuse me," I get up from my chair and swiftly walk out the kitchen.
I walk straight towards the board room hearing them call after me. I run into the room and lock the door then run to the desk, ripping off my necklace and place it in the table, slapping my hand beside it. A minute later Brent appears in the room. "Rose?"
"He's planning something." I pace the room. "And I'm not just talking about that stupid prophecy. I mean he's planning something else." My breathing comes rapid.
Someone's pounding on the door. They're calling my name. Brent looks between the door and me confused. "Rose what are you-"
"He's planning something I just know it! We've been walking around those tunnels for days now and we've only got attacked like three times the whole entire time. What happened to his grand army? Huh?" I laugh. "And then he sends that god damn goblin to send me a message." I shake my head. "How does he know they're even here?" I question him, although I know he doesn't know the answer.
The door thuds loudly. "Rose!"
"He's going to do everything in his power to make sure I have nothing left." My voice wavers. "He's going to kill them isn't he?" The door bursts open with Trevor and Tyler bursting in almost falling to the floor.
They look between Brent and I, not really knowing how to process the situation but Brent ignores them. Instead he walks up to me and hugs me tightly.
"Calm down." My breathing is still coming out short and fast. How the hell am I supposed to calm down when everything is completely wrong?
"He knows they're here. He knows they're here." I repeat over and over again silently against his chest. He only hugs me tighter.
"Rose?"
"It's best if you guys just let me handle this." I tighten my grip on him, hoping they would listen to him but know otherwise.
"No, we're her friends we aren't leaving her." I shake my head.
"Just leave!" I feel a presence behind me, seconds later a hand touched my shoulder.
"She's shaking." Trevor.
"Just leave you're only going to upset her some more."
"No." I hear Fred growl.
I clutch onto Brent's jacket desperately trying to slow down my heart beat. "Just go I know how to calm her down I've dealt with this before. I just need you all to leave before you make it any worse."
"No they need to know." I unclench my hands from Brent. "What's the point right? I mean what's the point in keeping anything a secret?"
"Rose?"
I turn to Trevor. "You wanted to know what the goblin said to me? He said 'master will be pleased to see you... Master will be pleased to see you and you're little friends." I look at each one of them. "He knows you're all here."
"How could he know?" Brent asks almost like to himself but I answer anyways.
"In the elevators we left our backpacks. He must've sent out one of his creatures to search it. They would've saw it there. Oh god they probably even know their names." Brent pulls out a chair and motions for me to seat. Good thing too, I don't think I could've stand any longer.
"Shit." Trevor mummers.
I place my head in my hands. This can't be happening. I mean I should've saw this coming right? He was going to find out about them sooner or later, I was only fooling myself thinking he wouldn't and we would all escape this damned place without a scratch.
"I still don't get this. What the hell is really going on here? I mean you said you've been here before. You know every twist and turn of this place... Why did you even come here in the first place? What was the mission that you couldn't complete? Why did you really quit?"
"Zach..." Grace says quietly.
"No. We have the right to know and I want to know right now. I don't want to know only bits and pieces of things that you just decide to tell us. I want to know everything and I know damn well you all want to know too."
"He's right." I look at Brent. He sighs and sits down beside me.
"Well you all might as well sit down, seeing that this is going to take long." They slowly walk to the table and sit down cautiously. "Okay who's up first?" Brent asks.
"What was the mission that you couldn't complete? What happened down here that made you want to quit?" I sigh at Zachs question.
"It's not so much as a mission as it is more of a prophecy."
"Excuse me?"
"There's this myth. A long time ago a great evil had attacked this planet. It would've created complete and utter destruction and probably kill life as we know it... but it was defeated."
"Or so everyone thought." I mummer. Brent ignores my comment and continues.
"It was said that it would return and complete what it had started long ago."
"Which was...?"
"To rule earth. To enslave humans, and to have those creatures rule over us."
"So what does that have to do with the mission?"
I sigh. "I had to come down here and kill their precious leader. He's the only one strong enough to bring it back from the dead."
"You said prophecy. So what, you're supposed to kill this leader so none of this happens?" I answer before Brent.
"Yup. It's said that only I can do it." I feel Brent stare me down, scrutinizing me, but I ignore him.
"Why you?" I shrug my shoulders.
"Who knows? But the one thing we did know is that only I could kill their leader."
"So you came down here and tried to kill him? What happened?" Grace leans forward.
"I barely escaped with my life."
"So when you said that some shit happened to you and you weren't the same afterwards... That's what you meant? You almost died?" I nod my head.
"But it's not like I can escape a prophecy, right director?" He stares at me silently, then grudgingly nods his head.
"Shit." Fred leans back in his chair.
"How do you know for certain that it has to be you?" Trevor bounces his leg, something he does when he's filled with adrenaline and wants to figure something out. "This prophecy thing can be talking about anyone, right?" He looks at Brent. "Can it?"
"Trust me, it's her. We've tried every other alternative but it's useless..." He stares at me. "Rose is the only one that's supposed to do this. Well that actually can do it."
"Well that's complete bullshit." Trevor laughs bitterly. "There always is another option!"
I reach out and hold his hand. "Calm down." He pulls back his hand.
"No! You almost died last time you did this right? It's obvious you don't want to do this again so why can't someone else do it?" He turns his gaze back at Brent. "I mean where's this prophecy thing written? Or were you just told about this? Because if that's the case there's no way in hell that no one has tried bending this prophecy shit to fit their own agenda!"
"It's been written decades ago. It's me, I have to do this. I may not have wanted to do this before but..." I turn to Brent. "But now I'm ready. I can do this."
He breaths deeply. "I know you are." He messages his temple. "Doesn't mean I am." He mutters to himself.
"Please you're not going to be doing anything." I snort. "Besides with my killer moves I'll crush him like the bug he is." I try lightning up the mood.
"God I hope so."
"Why do I feel like there's something you're not telling us?" I stare at Trevor.
"We've just told you everything."
"What about you're team?" In the corner of my eye I spy Brent looking at me silently waiting to hear my response. My fist curls underneath the table.
"What about them?" I ask Tyler as clueless as possible.
"The first time we spent the night here in this place, you said 'we' as in you weren't alone. Where's you're team? Why don't you ever talk about them? Who are they?"
"That's classified information." Brent says firmly as he fold his hands on top of one another.
"Fine if you won't tell us they're names then surely you can tell us why they aren't here right now helping Rose. I mean they're a team right? I don't understand why Rose has to go through this alone."
Brent doesn't have a response for that but this time I do. "My team won't be able to help because it's something I have to do myself."
"Then why did they come here with you last time?"
"Because last time I didn't know what I was up against." I growl. Tyler's eyes widen in response. I clear my throat and try relaxing myself. "This time I know." I say in a gentler voice. "Besides they wouldn't have known of my location anyways."
"Yes. Her reinstatement is a secret no one knows but us and of course the president. And unless you all still have questions I believe I'm needed in my office." He gets up from his chair. "Rose, if you would?" I get up and follow him out the busted door to my room.
"Tired of keeping things a secret huh?" He lifts his brow.
"Well what else was I supposed to say?" I whisper-yell as if they can still hear us from the other room.
He rubs his temple again. "I don't know." We stay silent for a few minutes. I already know what he's going to say but I don't feel like talking about it so I plop back into my bed instead.
"Rose." He warns. I groan and turn to my side, using the pillow to block him out but he only removes it. "What the hell was that back there? All those years..." He shakes his head. "I just thought you would have controlled that by now."
"Not really something I get used to. And to be fair I haven't reacted like that so far until now so I think I should get some bonus points for that." He waves me off. "What? Come on, you can't honestly expect me to be sane after what happened? Especially being down here again?"
"No but-"
"No but- anything. I know I shouldn't have done that but I can't help my anxiety. Besides it wasn't that bad I just got carried away trying to figure this shit out."
"Just try not to have a nervous breakdown in front of them okay? It could have been much worse, you could have triggered another memory."
"Hence the 'could have'..." I mutter. "Look I didn't and that's what matters right? I won't do that in front of them if I could help it."
"Still." He shakes his head. "You don't want to tell them the entire truth and I get that." He sighs after seeing my face. "I honestly do especially in the position that your in. But in order for you to do that, you have to keep yourself in check or else..."
"I know."
"And then we don't know how you get when you get a memory, you could act violently or I don't know." He sits down. "Just be careful. You know you can contact me at anytime especially if you need to vent out any of this." I nod my head.
"Thanks." He nods.
"I do have to go." He gets up. "I was actually in a middle of a meeting with the rest of the agents and if I keep leaving every minute they might just turn me into a side dish."
"Thanks again, Brent. For everything." I nod my head towards the other room. He smiles.
"Anything for you." He bends down and pecks my cheek quickly.
"None of that. Don't forget I work for you now and that's improper behavior."
"Screw it I'm my own boss." He smirks.
"No you're not!" He rolls his eyes and bids me a farewell before clicking the button on his watch and disappears.
I sigh and lay back on my bed.
What was he planning? Whatever it is I can't let him get to them. He would just have to kill me first.
