Chapter Five
I didn't sleep, I stayed up the entire night until I knew I was myself again. By the time I left the workout room everyone was awake and in the kitchen eating breakfast.
I knew I was drenched in sweat and probably stank like horse shit but I never felt so much more alive. I still had so much energy that I didn't even know where it came from at this point.
"Hey kids." I walk to the fridge and take out the milk carton. I down it in seconds, tossing the empty carton in the trash.
"Ew." Casey scrunched up her nose.
"What the sweat or how bad I must stink?"
"You drank out of the milk carton. But that too." She scrunches up her nose.
I roll my eyes. "Anyways, I have to take a shower and get ready so do whatever you guys need to do and we'll meet in the living room in half an hour." I walk to the kitchen door only having to be stopped by Trevor and Fred.
"Woah where do you think you're going miss? You haven't even ate breakfast yet!" Fred nods in agreement. I grab a nectarine from the kitchen table.
"Hey that's mine!" Casey protests. I lick it all over. "Whyyyy?"
I smirk at the boys as I take a bite out of my fruit. "Oh look I'm having breakfast! Now move." I push them aside, making them stumble back as I hurry into my room before they could whine on about the importance of breakfast and quickly head to the bathroom.
I peel off my clothes letting them fall to the ground and seconds later I was inside the shower putting shampoo and conditioner into my hair and soap all over my body to get rid of the disgustingness. Then I was out the shower and changing into new pair of black clothes that the agency had left behind in my dresser.
I blow dried my hair quickly running a comb through it and left my room. To my surprise everyone was already sitting in the couch silently waiting for me.
"Here's the plan. You stay quiet, and don't cross me. Don't bother trying to be the hero because you'll only get yourself killed in the end. If you see anything from the outside world in those tunnels, run away. If I give you orders you follow them obediently if not there will be consequences. Now follow me, I have to gear up." I head to the weapons room grinning at the sight of all the deadly weapons in front of me like it was candy from a candy shop.
"Holy shit."
"Is this legal?" I turn towards Zach giving him an 'are you kidding me look.' Before refocusing on the task at hand.
I grab a weapon belt and latch it on my hip placing my gun on the belt. I grab a sword, placing it on the other side of my belt. Again I place my throwing knives in my boots, only 4 could fit on each boot. I tie my hair up into a pony tail as I look around the room looking for weapons I might have missed.
"Why can't we have a weapon?" Fred reaches out for a knife. I tear it from his hands and place it back on the rack.
"Don't hurt yourself cupcake. Come on let's go." I rush them out the door, on my way out I grab another gun just in case. "We go out the same way we came in. We keep moving until I say so then we go into another safe room."
Trevor appears from the kitchen with a sandwich in hand, thrusting it in my direction. "You didn't eat." True, I haven't. I left the nectarine in my trash bin, I only had one bite out of it.
I take it from his hands and take a bite out of it, ham and cheese my favorite. I smile at him, "come on Trev lets go." He nods, joining the rest of the group.
I place a hand on the wall, and soon there's a square on the ceiling. Everyone climbs up the ladder, I'm last of course so I can make sure we didn't forget anything or anyone then close up the square after I leave.
We are greeted with darkness as soon as it closes. I hurry to the wall placing my hand on the cool surface, repeating the code so it opens. I walk out to the tunnel holding my hand out letting them know to stay behind as I check to see it was clear before giving them the signal to come out. With everyone close behind I take another bite out of the sandwich and walk down the tunnel casually.
I can feel everyone tense as they walk behind me trying to keep up with my pace as they look around the tunnels, and know right away that I should have given them a pep talk or something. It would have made them less tense or stressed that they were safe with me. Well too late for that now.
We make a series of turns and each time we do I make sure to go first, with my gun pointed out for danger but there wasn't any.
We haven't had an encounter with anything so far and although it was a bit of a relief it was also rather strange. We roamed around the tunnels for hours until I started to feel hungry again.
I had already finished my sandwich but that was hours ago already. Maybe I should've ate breakfast after all... I'll never tell the boys they were right though.
A hand suddenly closes on my own catching me by surprise I turn around, gun ready, only to see Trevor holding out another sandwich in front of me. I smile widely. "How?"
He shrugs. "I figured you would be hungry still so I made an extra and put it in the backpack." We carried a backpack of water in case anyone got dehydrated. Thank god Trevor put a sandwich in it.
"Did I ever tell you how much I love you?" I see Tyler glance at both Trevor and I, in the corner of my eye. I had to fight the urge to roll my eyes.
"You don't have to tell me, I already know. I mean who doesn't love me?" He smirks. I laugh, pushing his shoulder slightly.
"Come on we'll keep moving a little bit longer and then we'll go back to another safe room." They nod. We took another turn, this time the tunnel had looked slightly different.
For one it wasn't a hallway, it was a room. Water was dripping down the walls everywhere from the drains and on the other side was a door. I make towards the door.
"Casey!" I hear Grace yell. I turn around scanning the room until my eyes found Casey walking towards a little puppy.
"What? He got lost!" She nears towards it.
"Casey get over here right now." She doesn't listen.
Just before she reaches the dog, it transforms into something big and ugly. It's head almost touching the roof. She stumbles back.
"Everyone stay still." They stay rooted to the spot.
"What is that?" Tyler whispers.
"Shape shifter." I say under my breath. The thing roars making everyone cringe around me. Slowly Casey walks backwards, staring at it the whole time. I curse under my breath as I see it focus its gaze on her.
"Everybody run!" They didn't need to be told twice as they make towards the door.
"Come on doggy! Let's play!" I smirk as I run to it. It catches sight of me and immediately forgets about everyone else as it runs towards me, the ground shaking each time it steps.
I take quick bites out of my ham and cheese sandwich and toss the rest of it over my shoulder. Before raising my gun and shoot it in the eyes. It wails as its left eye closes shut, blood and puss oozing out of it. I try shooting it in the other eye but it dodges it and knocks me to the side like a rag doll. I slam into the wall, and thud to the floor groaning, as I rub the back of my head.
"Rose!" I look up, seeing everyone crowded by the door staring at me in horror as I'm lifted up off the ground by my legs. I try shooting it but nothing happens. I throw the gun at its belly and grab my sword as it brings me closer. I stab it at it's injured eye making it wail in pain as I push the sword deeper into its eye. It thrashes around, finally letting go of me but I gripped onto the sword. It was so deep into its eye that it could hold me up.
I swing back and fourth as it keeps thrashing around and wailing in pain and anger. I jump once I was high enough and grasp onto its shoulder, lifting myself up. I try balancing myself but the shape shifter kept thrashing around trying to get me off of it I kept stumbling around trying to climb the top of its head.
It whacks its head trying to hit me but each time it misses as I roll around its head. I remove my other gun (I brought in case of an emergency) and stand up shakily. I point the gun on its head and shoot repeatedly. It stops and I'm suddenly falling backwards.
I rush forward, running down its body and jump, landing on my feet right when it crashes down behind me. I turn around and sigh as I walk to its dead body. Once I reached its head I climb up its shoulder to its face.
I had to retrieve my sword since my gun should be out of bullets already. I reach its eyeball where my sword was still stuck in deep in, puss still oozing out of it. I pull it out, taking the eye with it. I jump off it as everyone crowds into the room.
"I think I might throw up." Casey turns pale, immediately hiding behind Fred.
"Come on we need to get out of here." Trevor grabs my hand, the one not holding the sword and eye, slightly pulling me towards the exit but I shake off his hand. "Not yet..." I grin as I run towards the shape shifters body and grab a handful of blood.
"Rose what are you-" I ignore Trevor as I splatter blood onto the wall and write feverishly not minding the fact that I wasn't writing very nicely.
Once I'm done I take a step back and climb up the body. I remove the eye from my sword and place it gingerly beside me before shoving the sword down, straight into the shape shifters heart. I grab the eye and shove it into the hilt of the sword. "Now we can go." I jump off the body and walk away.
"I'm coming for you." He reads. He turns to me, brows at question. "Who ar-"
"Less talking more walking." Trevor rolls his eyes.
"You are one for the theatrics." I smile devilishly at him.
"Oh you bet."
____
We made it to the safe room without anymore encounters of any other creature besides the one shape shifter.
Everyone was relieved about that but I couldn't help but be a little suspicious. I mean I knew they were planning something but I couldn't figure out what it was yet. I mean the possibilities were endless and they weren't stupid, that I know... At least not entirely.
So that means if Brent is right this time then... Well I just can't think about that now. The only thing I should worry about is getting everyone out alive.
"We'll stay here for the night and once we all wake up in the morning and eat breakfast, we leave first thing." They nod... All except for Trevor.
"So what your saying is you do need breakfast to get through the day? Because if it wasn't for the sandwiches I made you..."
"Then you wouldn't be in a good mood at all." Fred crosses his arms.
"Not that she's ever in one." Grace smiles.
I roll my eyes. "Okay, okay." I hold out my hands in surrender. "Yes I need breakfast to get through the day but you need me to actually get you through the day... Alive that is." I smile sweetly at them.
"That's just cruel." I smile widely.
"Okay so boys are in the right, girls in the left. Lights out in two hours. Gives you enough time to eat something then go to sleep." They nod silently.
I walk to my room, kicking it shut behind me. I needed a shower more then I needed food or sleep that was for sure. After all I was covered in shape shifters blood.
Once I was cleaned up and dressed in pajamas I walked out of my room to the kitchen. To my surprise no one was here except for Tyler and Fred.
"Where's everyone?"
"Behind you." Zach walks in casually wearing pjs, Trevor right behind him. "The girls are knocked out already."
"I would be too but I'm starving!" Everyone else agrees so we all ended up making ourselves peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We didn't even use any plates or silverware, just the one butter knife to make the sandwiches since we were way too tired to clean any mess up.
We talked every now and then but for even that we were too tired for since we all we half asleep with our eyes drooping as the other talks all soft like. It was like listening to a lullaby! We quickly finished eating and said goodnight before pummeling into our own rooms.
I flopped onto my bed and was out like a light as soon as my face hit the pillow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was in a blue silk nightgown that caressed my skin as I paced. When I turned at the heel my french braid lightly tapped my lower back. It had become so irritable I debated removing the braid entirely but instead I brought it to the side with my hand in a fuss.
The pale moonlight coming through the single window I had in my chambers was the only form of light I had except for the few candles that I had lit up, giving a soft faint glow throughout my room.
I wasn't wearing shoes as I paced back in fourth. The pads of my feet were met with a cool surface whenever they met the ground but I still preferred to be barefoot.
It seemed as if I were waiting for something and very anxious about it. No, not something... someone?
I felt rather strange, as if something were about to happen. Something that was bigger than me. Something that was powerful.
Something I couldn't control... and quite frankly that scared me most of all.
I couldn't shake off the feeling that whatever it was, it was going to change my entire life. Yet I couldn't place my finger on it as I paced my room.
Suddenly the door to my chambers opens, revealing a shadow of a person who was smaller than me. It wasn't until they stepped into the room that I knew who it was, Grandmother.
"Child, I will not waste each other's time as I tell you this." She shuts the door. "But be warned that what I am about to tell you must never leave this room do you understand me?" She looks at me sternly.
I don't know who this woman is or why I think she is my 'grandmother' but she sure as hell is not mine. I never even met this woman in my entire life! But still I lurch forward, towards the small woman and grab her soft wrinkly hands with my small ones.
"Grandmother what is it? Tell me." She leads me to my bed, and sits on the edge of the bed then tentatively pulls me down with her.
"I'm afraid to say that something terrible is about to happen. It will change not only your life, but the lives of others as well." I shake my head confused.
"What's going to happen? What do I do? Why is it going to affect my life?"
"I can not say my child." She reaches up and strokes my cheek gently. The comfort of her hand makes me close my eyes. "When it's time you will know." She drops her hand.
"Grandmother-"
"Surly you must feel a change. Something greater than you, powerful than you, than any of us."
"I do but-"
"This is your destiny." She stares into my eyes with a kind of sorrow that was enough to make me fear for the unknown.
"I'm only 18 grandmother." I try to argue but the argument is useless. Why should I argue if I have no idea what I'm arguing about? Yet still I do. "I have done nothing in my life and you tell me that something terrible will happen and it is my destiny? I just do not understand!" I rush to my feet.
"Of course you do not understand! I do not even understand it myself but one day you will and you will know what to do!"
"If it's something terrible than surely fathers army can take care of it." She shakes her head at me.
I knew at that moment she was disappointed in me. It was a strange look to see that in my grandmothers face for she was always one to hide her emotions well enough to keep you guessing. Whatever it is that has her shaken has changed that now as she stands quietly from my bed and walks towards the door.
"You will know child. In time, you will understand." And she leaves.
What was she talking about? I must find out for the unknown felt like a ticking time bomb that I had no idea in which it would explode.
I run for the door, reaching out for the door knob but as soon as my hand connects to it, it turns into black smoke. Everything around me turns into smoke. No, no, no, no!
I burst awake, gasping for air. Looking around my room feverishly. It was most definitely not the one from my dream. In my dream it seemed all fancy and this one is just plain white walls and bedding.
I flop back into the mattress suddenly feeling very confused and vulnerable... And also a bit scared. This all just felt strange and I couldn't shake of the feeling that something was going to happen. And this time I'm scared that maybe... Maybe Brent is right after all.
That it's time.
