Chapter Twenty-Six
"These are beautiful, or what about these?" Sarah asked, as she buried her face in a bouquet of flowers.
Her voice felt so distant, as if it was in another room. I was barely paying attention to the different flowers I was surrounded by. Days were going by quick, there was so much to do for the wedding. Calum and I had just about booked our venue, but that was all. My dress wasn't chosen, flower arrangements were not thought of. So much to do in such little time.
When Sarah learnt that I had not done anything, she practically barked at me. She forced me to come to this vintage flower shop on the high street. I felt so disinterested in checking the flowers. I kept on itching my nose, the scent from the flowers was attacking my nose, causing me to sniffle and itch every ten seconds.
"Hello... Earth calling Louisa." Sarah shouted pinching me.
"Ow! You cow! What was that for?" I responded to the sharp scratch I received on my arm.
"We've been here for thirty minutes; you haven't looked at a single bouquet. Come on. Snap out of it and choose!" Sarah shook me.
"I don't know. Just pick any," I exclaimed back, shrugging Sarah off.
"This is your damn wedding!" Sarah shrieked through her teeth.
The owner of the flower shop, stood in the corner, didn't know whether to come to us. Sarah mouthed sorry to her, as we were being slightly loud.
I took my phone and started to take pictures of the different bouquets.
"What are you doing?" Sarah questioned frowning her brows.
"What does it look like?" I sarcastically replied, "I'm taking pictures to show Calum."
"We are looking for the bouquet you're going to hold, it's your choice-"
"And? I want Calum's opinion."
Sarah rolled her eyes at me, letting me carry on with taking pictures. After I was done, I waved to Sarah, for us to leave, the shop felt so crowded by the many flowers dotted around; I was feeling claustrophobic. She mouths 'thank you' and 'sorry' to the owner once again.
Being out in the open, I felt like I could breathe again. It was so cramped, I felt like I was suffocating from the strong scent of the flowers.
"Now what?" I asked taking in the fresh air.
"You are unbelievable. You should be on top of this. You're acting as if this isn't your wedding we are planning." Sarah crossed her arms, nodding her head disapprovingly.
I let out a groan in annoyance. "What? I'm agreeing to your plans, isn't that enough?"
Sarah's eyes soften, she placed her hand on my arm. "You are happy with this wedding, right?"
"Of course, I am. Why would you ask that?" I nervously laughed.
"You don't seem excited. If this was me, I would be non-stop planning."
I paused for a moment. Should I be overly excited? I felt so chill about this, I wasn't feeling stressed at all. I brushed these thoughts away and changed the subject.
"Just tell me, where to next?"
Sarah got out her phone, checking her notes. "Okay, so now we are going to the decorations shop, which is that way."
Sarah pointed towards the left, down the high street. I hooked onto her arms, striding towards the direction she pointed at.
While we walk, arm in arm, I drifted into my own world. Sarah was chatting away; I didn't listen to a word. My brain started to think about Alexander. I understood how to make him squirm and hot under the collar. Seeing him all tensed made my day, I simply was giving back how he had been making me feel for a long time.
As I come back to the present world, something peculiar caught my eye. I let out a gasp, stopping, bringing Sarah to a halt.
"What? What is it?" Sarah exasperatedly asked.
I point over across the road. "Look over there."
Sarah turned her head to see what I was looking at, so shocked. At a French cafe across the road, where there were a few table and chairs outside. I saw Charles and Viv, sitting on the same table, deep in conversation. Their conversation looked tense; both their facial expressions were exaggerated as they were talking. They also used an excessive amount of hand movements.
"What the hell am I looking at?" Sarah asked bobbing her head side to side.
Dragging Sarah to the side, making sure we were not insight. I turned her shoulders, to face their direction. I pointed again, ensuring she was looking at the right place.
"Look there. The seating area outside that French cafe. It's that bloody creep and Viv." I said close to Sarah's ear, trying to get her to hear me over the hustle and bustle noise of the environment outside.
"So?" She irked her lips and narrowed her eyes.
"What do you mean, so? It looks suspicious." I exclaimed.
"Oh, forget it Louisa. Come on let's go." Sarah started to drag me, making me move a few steps.
I pulled her back. "No. Wait, I need to know what they're talking about."
"How are you bloody going to do that?" Sarah pressed the temples of her head on my shoulder.
I tapped my foot, trying to come up with a plan. I needed to do something. I had to know what they were talking about. I wasn't normally not a nosy person, but ever since going to Charles place for breakfast. I had an odd feeling about him. Same with Viv, when I saw her trying to sneak into Alexander's office, I knew something was not right. Two oddly suspicious people together, didn't sit right with me.
I had a lightbulb moment. I unlinked my arm out of Sarah's. I frantically looked around in my bag. After finding a pair of sunglasses. I handed them over to Sarah.
"Wear these, and add some volume to your scarf, so your face is hidden." I plumped the scarf around her neck, making sure her identity was concealed.
"Louisa!" Sarah shouted through her teeth, "What are you doing?"
"If you stay hidden, they won't recognise you. Charles doesn't know you. I doubt Viv will remember you, but it's good to take pre-caution. Call me on my phone, stand around them, and tell me what they are saying."
"Are you out of your damn mind? I'm not doing this!" She pushed the glasses back in my hand.
"Please Sarah!" I pleaded, holding my hands together, "I just need to feel as ease, it's probably nothing, but I've had nothing but bad vibes about them. Please, please, please."
We stayed silent for a while. Sarah looked over to the other side and then back at me. She closed her eyes and let out a sigh, as if she had just been defeated in battle.
"Fine!" She shouted, shooting me a very annoyed look on her face.
I clapped my hands with happiness and gave her the sunglasses back. As she made her way over, I answered her call.
I stood next to a parked car, where I was able to see them clearly, ensuring I was not in plain sight. I felt anxious like I was on the edge of a bridge. I couldn't stop tapping my foot, I was a bag of nerves.
"Okay, I'm near the cafe, but I can't hear what they are saying," Sarah said in a mellow tone, though the phone.
"Go closer! Turn and face the road, so your back is towards them. Try and get as close as you can." I squinted my eyes, trying focus on the scenes.
"Okay, I can just about hear them-"
"What are they saying?" I impatiently asked.
"Wait! I'm trying to listen." Sarah scolded me as if I was a child.
I rolled my eyes, screaming on the inside of my head, as if that would speed things up.
"Shit!" Sarah muttered under her breath.
"What? Tell me."
"Wait." Sarah let out again, "Okay, I pretty much understand what they are talking about, I'm coming back."
"Wait. Sarah no-"
She hung up and ran back towards me. Out of breath, she reached my, not so subtle, hiding space.
"You need to call Alexander right now." Sarah finally said after catching her breath.
My heart sank, yet beat fast as I was starting to feel anxious. I waited for Sarah to carry on.
"Charles was saying, how all his business deals he got Alexander to sign, are nearly ready-"
"What the hell does that mean." I yelled shaking Sarah.
"All these business deals are fake. They were all set up to fall through at some point. The money Alexander is investing it's not helping the businesses, it's all going to some off shore account. I'm guessing it'll all go to Charles' name."
My ears couldn't comprehend the words coming out of Sarah's mouth. It was all suddenly starting to make sense. This was the reason why Alexander was losing money. This was why a few business deals were falling though. The fact that Viv knew about this, was worrying. It was clear to me why Viv was sneaking around the office. My mind averted to that file with Alexander name. I needed to know what was in that file.
"What else were they saying?" I asked coming back to my senses, trying to gather all this information.
"Viv mentioned some files she managed to photocopy when she was in the office. She also said she also found files circling back to five years ago."
Nothing was making sense. I was filled and consumed with so much confusion. My head felt like it was clouded with so much to understand.
"Louisa. We need to do something. We need to tell Alexander. It looks like they are planning to wipe Alexander clean of his money."
I felt like I was hyperventilating. Alexander needed to know everything. Also on the other hand, Alexander blindly trusted Charles, how would he believe me. I needed evidence, and I was pretty sure it was in that file.
"Sarah, we need proof. Alexander won't believe me. It's my word against theirs."
I had another light bulb moment. It was a risky plan, but it had to be done.
"Okay Sarah, listen I have a crazy idea. Please don't say no. Please help me, we need to do this quick."
"Ahh shit." Sarah exclaimed being put in a predicament, "Fine tell me what we need to do."
"I'm going to call Charles. I'm going to tell him I need him to sign some contracts. I'm hoping he'll believe it. I'll persuade him to get it signed at his house, that shouldn't be a problem, he'll gladly let me enter his house. Then I need you to help me cause a distraction. The guards will answer the gate, but no matter what, try and get him to come to the gate. Then that's my opportunity to go and find that file. Once I get the file, we can show Alexander everything."
Sarah and I were both trembling. I felt my voice turn shaky. I felt like I was on a timer, slowly edging toward the end of a cliff, about to be pushed off.
As much as Sarah not wanting to do this, she hesitantly nodded her head agreeing to my crazy plan. This was it. It was time to set everything in motion. Charles and Viv were not going to get away with this.
A/N
It looks like Charles and Viv are working together, but what are they up to?
This is suddenly feeling like mission impossible, this is going to be risky but will Louisa be able to get that file?
