Chapter Twenty-Seven
Getting out the car, I made my way over to the gate of Charles Moore. My palms were soaked with sweat, as I gripped on to my bag that hung over my shoulder.
I was latched onto the hope that Sarah's timing would save me. My head started to feel heavy, it felt like it was clouded with many thoughts, I couldn't think straight.
Not even a mere ten seconds had passed, and I was buzzed in as soon as I pressed bell. Walking down the long drive, I think to myself whether I should make a run and leave. The fear was slowly creeping in, I had to try and steady my breathing. If Charles got an insight on what I was up to, the whole plan would go up in flames.
Entering the familiar mansion, there he was. Standing tall and proud, whisky in one hand and a cigar in the other.
"Louisa darling. So great to see you," Charles said in his deep, raspy voice. He marched over to me, wrapped his heavy loaded arms around me, trying to give me a hug. I kept my hands to the side, trying not to inhale the sickly stench of cigar and cologne.
He backed away from the hug, standing limp, eyeing me up and down. I looked down to the watch on my wrist, how long before Sarah would take him away.
"How have you been my darling?" Charles asked as he took a puff from his cigar.
The word darling has lost all its meaning, I suddenly did not like the word anymore.
"I'm good thanks, how are you?" I responded, forcing myself to have a conversation. I darted my eyes around the room, trying to figure out where the office was. Deep down, I wished I had paid attention when he gave me a tour, I felt so disorientated.
"You know me darling, I've been all good. So, what papers needed signing?"
I internally screamed, he was already asking for the papers I didn't have. I cleared my throat, trying to take as long as I could to answer.
"Um, yes the papers. So, the papers that needed signing-"
"Mr Moore?" A voice interrupted.
I turned to see ones of the guards. Relief gushed through me.
"What?" Charles barked.
"There's a lady at the gate-"
"And? What does she want?!" Charles rudely butted in.
"She won't say. She said it's important to see you." The guard replied in a low voice.
"Fuck sake. Fine tell her I'm coming," Charles let out a sigh, swearing under his breath.
Just before exiting, Charles turned to me, wiping the angry look on his face. "Darling, I won't be a minute. Hopefully this bitch at the gate won't take long,"
"Whilst your gone, can I use the bathroom?" I quickly asked.
"Course. Use any bathroom you like." Charles gave me a menacing wink, making me feel sick to my stomach.
I smiled back, knowing that I had a cover for disappearing. As soon as the door closed, I shot straight towards the stairs. When I got to the top, there were three hallways. One to my left, one to my right and one in front of me. Gritting my teeth, I growled in annoyance. I had no clue where to go, looking back, I checked to see if Charles returned. Making a lucky guess, I went down the hallway in front of me.
I was welcomed to so many doors on my left and right. Each door I opened, was not the room I was looking for. Running back at the start, looking left and right. I made a snap judgement turning left.
The third door I opened, it was like I hit the jackpot. Standing in the office, I was elated with happiness. Thinking back to when I was in the office, Charles had put the file in the drawer of the desk. I made a quick prayer, hoping the desk was not locked.
A sense of relief flashed over me, as the draw opened, but then it faded when I noticed the file was not there. The clock was ticking, I had to find that file no matter what.
Walking over to the shelved units on the left, I looked through each one. Feeling around to see if there was a hidden compartment. Sweat started to form on my head, my heart was beating so fast, I couldn't keep track. Storming back to the desk, I place my hands on my hip looking around the room. Frantically trying to think where the file could be.
Just as I was close to giving up, my phone fell out of my pocket, creating a thud on the floor. Going down to pick my phone, in the corner of my eyes I noticed something pinned under the desk. It felt like my vision had become clear, my clouded thoughts dispersed out of my brain.
There it was, the file. I pulled it from the desk. Getting up from the floor, I held on to the file like my life depended on it. Before leaving the room, I quickly flick through it, My eyes widen in shock, a list of business were noted. Some of them I recognised, they were businesses Alexander had signed to. They all were planning to go down, just to steal money from Alexander.
Flicking through, it was endless businesses, ready like vultures to bleed Alexander of his money. On the last page, my mouth dropped open. There were two names that signed this file. The first signature belonged to Charles. The second signature is what made me feel like the room was spinning, the confusion creeping in. The signature belonged to Vivien Moore. Many thoughts swirled around my head. Is this the same Vivien, who used to be Alexander's assistant, why did she have the same surname as Charles?
I pushed the questions away from my head. I swung the door open, to make an exit, but I was brought to a standstill. Charles was standing on the other side. The blood from my face drained, a lump in my throat had formed. Charles piercing eyes focused on my face and then on the file in my hands.
Without uttering a word, he walked towards me, causing me to back up maintaining the distance. He closed the door and stood there with his arms crossed over his chest.
"What do you think you're doing?" He sternly demanded.
My head felt light and airy, my throat was rough and dry, it was difficult to swallow. I couldn't form the words; how do I bring myself out of this. I took in the situation I was in, I had sudden wave of bravery enter my body. It was like someone had injected it. I wasn't going to back down from this measly man.
"I know your plan!" I claimed, looking him dead in the eyes, "Its over. You're a con man, you're a fraud-"
"Shut your mouth," Charles growled at me, "You think you know it all, but you don't."
He slowly started to creep towards me, stepping back ever so slightly, I wanted to keep the distance between us.
"You've created these fake businesses for Alexander sign and invest his money. Only for the money to be stored in an off shore account. Then when the businesses mysteriously fail, it'll cause a loss to Alexander. He trusts you with all his life and this is how you repay him, by stealing his money?"
Charles started to chuckle in a demonic way. The laughter coming out of his mouth, was like a piercing sound rupturing my ear drum.
"You think this is about the money?" Charles snapped, "Well it's not. It's about taking back what belongs to me!"
"What do you mean?" I awkwardly asked, confused as to what he meant.
"AP Enterprise was supposed to be mine. Till that bastard Adrian took everything from me-"
"Adrian? As in Adrian Pierce? Alexander's father?" I interrupted.
"Yes!" Charles hissed with spit flying out of his mouth, "Years ago, Adrian and I were the best of mates. We had big dreams to build a business together. I came up with the idea of creating something like AP Enterprise. At the time I was struggling for money. Adrian had chipped in with his money, that's when he decided to be the sole owner and leave me to dust. This was supposed to be mine! When I started to get back on my feet, I started earning the money back. I offered Adrian money, so I can own half the company, he fucking rejected me. I never been so angry and disappointed.
"Then the poor bastard died. When I found out his clueless son was taking over. I seized the opportunity. Slowly I was going to take back what was supposed to be mine."
So many truths were crashing into me. I didn't want to believe his words. I swallowed the little spit formed in my mouth, causing a dull pain from the dryness.
"You had a problem with Adrian, yet, you're targeting Alexander. He had nothing to do with any of this." I explained as I moved back, with Charles edging closer and closer to me. My back hit the desk, I had nowhere to move.
"You just had to stick your fucking nose in all this!" Charles yelled as he was breathing like a rabid animal.
He was now a finger length away from me. I could feel his breath land on to my face. I was disgusted by it. It felt like the walls were closing in on me, there was very little time and before I know it, I would have been crushed.
All of a sudden, a wave of courage crashed into me, causing my knee to go upwards to his groin.
"You bitch!" He growled bucking down, holding on to dear life.
Whilst he was in a vulnerable position, I lift my knee again, which collides into his face. Using all the strength in me, my hand slammed down on his shoulders, pushing him. This caused him to lose his balance and fall to the floor.
The perfect opportunity had arisen for me to make an escape. I ran toward the door, swinging it open. As I hurried down, I shoved the file in my bag and dialled Sarah's number.
"Call Alexander now!" I shouted down the phone. I hung up straightaway, Not giving Sarah the chance to respond.
I saw the gate in the distance. Running towards it felt like I was getting nowhere. The more I ran the more it seemed to get further and further away from me. The souls of my feet were on fire, it was difficult to breath. Sharp pains were shooting all over my body.
I was brought to a sudden stop when I saw the guard standing at the gate.
"Did you really think you could escape?" A familiar voice called out from behind me.
I looked over my shoulder, causing me to turn around and face the person. Out of nowhere, Viv had made an appearance. Her eyes were burning with rage, she looked like she was ready to attack me.
"I think it's best you come back inside. My husband and I have a lot to sort out with you," Viv snapped.
The words she had just said, crashed into my ears. As my body trembled with fear, my brain now understood the connection. It was like a can of worms had been open and they were consuming my brain.
