Chapter Twenty-Eight

Being kept in a secluded room, at the back of the garden, felt like I was a caged animal. The inside of the room was made up of bare bricks, along with the concrete floor, the air inside felt ice cold. One small window at the top, barely letting the light in. It was evident that this room had been forgotten about, the cobwebs justified it.

Pacing up and down the room, with my arms crossed, shivers ran down my spine. There was no warmth in this room. My plan bursted into flames. As I tried to get away, I was caught. My bag, which had the file in, and my phone was taken away.

I was none the wiser with what was happening on the outside. So many thoughts crashed into my head. Whether Sarah knew I was in trouble. Did Sarah call Alexander?

The sound of the door opening, caught my attention. I darted my head towards the door, only to see Viv's menacing looks casting her eyes on me.

Closing the door, she leaned her back upon it, creeping a smirk on her face.

"I didn't have you as a two-faced snake!" I growled, twitching my lips.

"Is that supposed to be hurtful?" Viv sarcastically asked, raising her brows.

Disapprovingly nodding my head and rolling my eyes, I looked at Viv, noticing the lack of care in her face. "I don't get it; you were so nice to me at the start. Why are you doing this? I understand with Charles, but you?"

Viv chuckled in a condescending way. "He's my husband, what do you expect? I'll help him no matter what."

"Well, I hate to break it to you, but your husband is a disgusting man. Married to you and he can't keep his eyes and hands off me." I purposely barked my words to her, trying to make her angry.

Viv straightened her posture, she slowly marched her way over to me, till she was standing in front of me. Her piercing eyes burned into me. I don't back down, I edged closer to her, glaring at her.

She shook her head and tutted. "Oh, you poor naive girl, don't you see? It was all part of the plan. I wanted to find a sweet innocent girl like you to take over. It was my idea to get Charles to make you feel uncomfortable, so you didn't get an insight on what we were doing-"

"What?" I exclaimed not letting her finish, "I guess it makes sense now. I thought I had a short interview because you saw potential in me."

Viv started to cackle like a witch. "I had a plan to hire the last person I interviewed, that just happened to be you."

Her words made me feel like a failure. I applied to the job to showcase my talent and desire to do well. It suddenly felt like I was just a pawn in their evil plan.

"But it looks like I hired the wrong person in the end." Viv snapped placing her hands on her hips, "You just had to stick your nose in our business! I guess that's what happens when you're in love with your boss."

Viv's words crashed into me like a bus. I felt dumbfounded with what she had said.

"What did you just say?" I blurted out, "I am not in love with Alexander-"

Viv laughed out loud, which pierced my ears. She backed her head whilst clashing her hands together. "Don't even try and deny it. I've seen the way you look at each other. Anyone from a mile away can see that you two are in love. Something has happened between you two I just know it."

I snorted in disgust at her. "Nothing has happened, and I'm not in love with him. I have a fiancé; I'm getting married soon."

"You can be in denial as much as you want, but there is something between you two. You're also willing to go to extreme lengths for him, how sweet." Viv exclaimed in a high-pitched voice, scrunching her nose, mocking me.

I shook my head at her, ignoring the words tumbling out of Viv's mouth. As I was about to defend myself, the door opened. Charles entered the room; he stood side by side with Viv. They wrapped their arms around each other, both giving me a demeaning look.

Air around me was starting to feel heavy. It felt like there was no oxygen in this room. The thick air was wrapped around my neck, slowly strangling me, causing me to gasp.

"Are you planning on keeping me in this room? Do you think you intimidate me? You don't!" I screamed, as anger build up inside me.

"Well, that depends, if you accept our offer," Charles replied in a sinister tone.

I raised one eyebrow, shifting my head to the side. "What offer?"

"We are giving you the chance to walk away from all this, if you help us-"

"Are you mad?" I snapped not listening to another word, "I would never help you. Alexander doesn't deserve all this, just because your ego was hurt all those years ago."

"You little bitch!" Charles hissed, his hand collided with my cheek, creating a rippled sound. My head was forced to turn to the side. My cheek stung, I winced at the sharp pain causing a buzz.

My hand comforted the sore area, as if it would have eased the pain. My vision became blurry with the sudden build-up of water. I looked at the monster who dared to slap me. His eyes were filled with rage and his face was red as a tomato.

"Baby, just leave it." Viv snapped holding Charles back, "She's not worth it. She'll never betray the man she's in love with."

"I told you! I am not in love with him!" I shouted, denying Viv's claims.

We get interrupted by a knock on the door. The door opened with the guards' head peering through.

"Um sir, the police are here. They want to speak you." The guard trembled.

I couldn't help but smile, I felt relieved. Could this mean Sarah called the police? Is Alexander here to save me?

"Are you fucking kidding me?" Charles spat, "Shit! Okay Viv, you go keep the police occupied."

Without saying another word, Viv nodded leaving the room with the guard. With Charles back turned to me, I saw an opportunity. My fight or flight instincts kicked in. I barged into Charles like a raging bull. With all the power I had in me, I hit and kicked, hoping he would fall.

As he lost his balance, I ran towards the door. My hands jittering, I opened the door to have fresh air surround me. The air suddenly became light, making it easy for me to breath. My heart was racing as if it was in a competition with another heart.

My eyes shot all over the garden. I was so far behind; the house looked like a tiny spec from where I was standing. The ground beneath me moved as I tried to get away, but all the energy had been drained.

A cold grip gets hold of my arm; I'm dragged back. When I turn around, I saw Charles. With his nostrils flaring and his breath heaving, his face was consumed by anger. I felt like a lost puppy as if there was nowhere to go.

I winced in pain, trying to free myself, but his grip bled onto my skin.

"You are not going nowhere." Charles growled, whilst dragging me.

At first, I thought he was taking me back in the room, but I was dragged past it. We were enclosed by trees; the light was blocked by the vast acres of high greenery over us. Soon we got to an open space. The floor was made up of gravel. There were
two wooden gates leading out.

Charles got to the first gate, with his one free hand, he opened up the gate. Just as we walked through the gate, we were stopped by someone. Not just anyone, there standing in front of us, Alexander.

I let out a huge sigh of relief, tears of happiness were streaming down my face. His stern gaze, glaring at Charles. His chest was evidently moving up and down, as the rage festered inside him. When Alexander's eyes met mine, it felt like being reunited with a lost soul. The familiarity of the warm feeling grew inside, knowing that with Alexander, I was safe.

In an instant Charles backed away from Alexander, dragging me to the far wooden gate.

"Charles. Stop all this, it's over the police are at the front." Alexander howled like a brave wolf.

Charles turned to face him, he placed his arm across my neck, pulling me close to him. Suddenly I felt a cold object on the surface of my skin. At first it felt like a small prick from a needle. When I darted my eyes below, I gasped in shock, a knife was held close to my throat. I whimpered, my breathing turned into a shaky rhythm

"Don't you dare come any closer!" Charles shouted, with his piercing tone stabbing my ears, "If you take one more step, I won't hesitate to harm her!"

Alexander held up his hands, the anger slowly started to fade and replaced by fear.

"Okay, Okay, Charles calm down. It's me you want not Louisa. Just let her go-"

"No! I'm warning you! Don't come any closer!" Charles spat as he tightened the grip around my neck and edging the knife closer.

"Charles, I thought you were my main man, what's gotten into you?" Alexander asked with pain, clear in his voice.

"Don't act like you don't know. Your father stole everything from me. I'm just getting back what I deserve."

I feel myself slowly moving, I realised that Charles was starting to back up towards the gate. It was only a matter of time before we reached the gate, where Charles would take me away. I was counting on Alexander to save me.

"Look we can work this out. Just let Louisa go and we can sort it out like adults," Alexander's calmly replied.

Charles didn't respond, instead he mumbled under his breath. The frustration was seeping out of Charles, as he frantically tried to move back, away from Alexander.

"What your father did to me, it pained me, he made me feel so little. He stole everything from me-"

"It wasn't like that Charles. You know it-"

"Bullshit! I couldn't get my revenge on him, so I made a promise to myself that you'd be my target."

Having Charles arms around my neck, with his heaving breathing raging down my ear, I started to feel lightheaded. I was gasping for air. Not only were tears streaming down my face, sweat had formed around my head. It felt like I was on a tightrope. Walking along trying to get to the end.

Alexander couldn't help but move closer to us, Charles shouted which stung into my ear drums. I screamed and whimpered as I felt the knife get closer and closer into my skin. All of a sudden, a sharp, loud bang rumbled around us. It felt like my eardrums had burst. Charles yelled into my ear, causing me to shake with fear.

I found myself falling behind, into Charles, as his heavy arm that had imprisoned my neck brought me down. My body met the floor, creating a thud. Slowly I started to lose vision, the world around me started loose the colour. I was welcomed by darkness. The last thing I heard was Alexander crying out my name.
