Chapter Thirty-Eight

Sarah slammed the break, causing me to jerk close to the dashboard of the car, she stopped right outside the entrance of the airport.

Quick short breaths left my mouth, my legs nervously twitched. For a while I froze, not understanding what was actually happening.

"Are you okay?" Sarah consoled me.

I turned to look at her, all I could do was nod my head yes. I checked the items in my hand, making sure I had everything.

"What's the plan?" Sarah asked, looking in to the rear-view mirror. Cars were piling up behind us, it was high time to exit the car.

"I have no idea. I just need to get in the airport and find Alexander. You park up somewhere, keep an eye on your phone. The next time I ring you, I'll either be sobbing in pain or sobbing in happiness." I stated with a slight tremble in my voice.

"Oh gosh. I'm shaking myself and it's not me who's going to be running for her life. I'll let you go. Good luck. I hope you find him." Sarah moved over to my side, giving me the biggest hug. I felt myself relax with her comforting hug.

With my legs shaky, I exited the car entered the airport. There was a buzz of an energetic atmosphere. Vast amount of people walking left and right, trying to get to their check-in desks, sending their luggage through.

I thought if I could get to Alexanders boarding gate, I could wait for him, even if he's not there. There was the whole idea of the unknown, there was no guarantee that his flight had already left. The uncertainty of whether he was still here or not, was eating me away on the inside.

As I ran to the check-in area of the airport, to get into the departure lounge, my senses and emotions were overwhelmed. My heart felt like it was running at one hundred miles per hour. The music of people chatting and the footsteps hitting the floor, was swirling around me.

I counted myself lucky as there was very few people waiting at the security. I joined the security line, bobbing up and down, feeling restless.

When it was my turn, I gave my passport and ticket to the lady behind the counter. She narrowed her eyes, peering over her glasses, staring into my soul.

"Ma'am, can I ask you to step to the side," she said in a dull tone, as if she was tired.

"What? Why?" I exclaimed.

"We just need to clear a few things up." She beckoned for the security guard to come over and take me to the side.

I groaned at the sudden inconvenience, but ensured I complied, knowing better to not make a scene. When taken to the side, an airport official arrives, looking at my passport and my ticket.

"Are you aware that your flight is at seven in the evening. You are five hours early. We also note, our system is showing that you've not checked in any luggage." The airport official gave me a deathly stare, as if I was a criminal.

"It's not what it looks like. I really need to get in to the departure lounge. I'm looking for someone. Everything is legit. My ticket is real, my passport is valid." I squirmed at the words falling out of my mouth.

I pinched the back of my hand, as I look beyond the airport official, who was standing tall right in front of me. For a moment I had hoped to see Alexander walk past, so that I could scream his name. But he was nowhere to be seen.

The man who stopped me in my tracks, mumbled something in his walkie talkie. Within two minutes another man, who was another airport official, arrived. I let out a frustrated sigh. Shaking my head at this predicament.

After the two men talk amongst themselves, the first one turned to me. "Ma'am, if you just go through the security detectors, and get checked, you're free to go."

I was handed back my passport and ticket. Swearing under my breath, I snatched my belongings back, re-joining the line. After about ten minutes, I was back at the start, giving my ticket and passport to get checked. I smiled sarcastically at the woman behind the desk, twitching my head to the side.

After the procedure of getting past security, I finally entered the departure lounge. People around me flowed like a river, constantly on the go, with nothing stopping them. The hustle and bustle of the airport, reminded me of the city, the hectic rush of people running around like ants.

It didn't occur to me to check the departures board, my mind was clouded with so many thoughts, I couldn't think straight. All I could do was, dart my eyes around cluelessly, left to right.

The airport was grand, with three sections to depart from. Within each section, twenty gates. I had the choice to either turn left or right. I made the snap decision turning left, powering my way to section A of the departure lounge.

I ran alongside each gate, checking the destinations. Barcelona, Berlin, Istanbul, Dubai, many destinations listed, but not one of them said Australia.

I clamped down my jaw as adrenaline flushed through my body. A lump formed within my throat; my heart had sunk all the way to the bottom of my stomach. My breathing quickened up as I picked the pace up.

As I pushed past the swarming amount of people, the thing I dreaded was announced.

"This is the last call for, flight number ET1317, to Sydney, Australia. Departing from gate C12. I repeat this is the last call, please make your way to the gate now."

After quickly scanning my surrounding, I saw that I was near gate A19, C12 was my destination. My feet slam against the floor as I ran to my end point. I was on a very short line. The candle was burning at a very fast pace. I was minutes away from the candle completely burning out.

I never ran so fast in my life. It was like my life depended on it. I swerved side to side, running narrowly past people tugging their luggage around. I accidentally knocked into someone, causing them to spill their coffee, I was so far gone, I didn't have time to acknowledge them swearing at me.

I was now at section B. Worry crept inside of me, I had a feeling I wasn't going to make it, but I had faith. I pushed myself to run faster, even though I was gasping for breath. My chest felt tight. It was like I was running a marathon and gate C12 was my finishing point.

The emotional pain I was facing, turned into the distance I was running. The longer I was running, the more pain I was facing.

My lips curled upwards as I noticed myself entering section C of the airport. All I had to do was get to the twelfth gate. When I was within view of the gate, the smile soon faded, as I saw the lady close the gate.

"Wait! Stop!" I shrieked; I took few more large strides till I managed to get to the gate.

Luckily the lady heard me, she opened up the door, she took my ticket off of me, but a frown appeared on her face.

"Ma'am, are you aware this is a ticket for Paris?" She asks handing me back the ticket.

"I know. But I really need to get on that plane." I said in between my heavy breathing. I tried to regulate my breaths, as I was so torn from running through the whole of the airport.

"I'm sorry, but I can't let you on this aeroplane. This is for Sydney, Australia. Your ticket is for Paris, France." She calmly replied with a smile on her face.

"Yes, I know that. But there's someone on this flight, I really need to get to them." I sharply snapped at her.

She irked her head to the side and furrowed her brows.

"Like I said, I am not able to let you on this aircraft. Let me close this door as we are ready for take-off." This time the lady replied in a serious tone.

"But-"

"Please back away, or I'll be forced to call security and have you escorted out of this airport." She forcefully hands me back my ticket and closed the door without giving me another look.

My eyes uncontrollably released tears. My candle was burnt out. The flame was gone. I took sharp breaths in as my tears wet my cheeks. Slumping down on the chair, I leaned my arms on my knees. Lowering my gaze, staring at the white tiled floors.

I never felt so heartbroken before. This was worse than finding out Calum cheating. I was so close to expressing my love for Alexander. It slipped out my hands. I don't know when I was going see him again.

I looked towards the tiny puddle of tears forming on the floor. All I could see was heartbreak. Tears of someone who had just lost someone, someone they were in love with.

After a while, a tissue come into my line of sight. My mind registered that someone was offering me a tissue. I cringed at the thought of people looking at me, taking note of the situation I was in

I accepted the offer of the tissue from the unknown person. As my fingertips accidentally grazed their hand, I get a sudden gush of familiarity. My eyes gapped wide open, my heart pittered and missed a few beats. When I got the courage to look up, my heart almost broke with joy.

Alexander was looking down on me.

I tightly pinched myself, making sure I wasn't dreaming, but this was truly real life. Shooting up from my seat, without giving it a thought, my first instinct was to wrap my arms around his neck and pull him in to a hug. I squeezed tightly as if I wasn't going to let him go.

"What... What are you doing here? I thought you had boarded your plane." I gushed, backing out of the hug. His admiring and dashing looks, made me melt. It felt so good to be close to him again.

"I couldn't do it. I couldn't board that plane knowing how we left things between us. And you? Your wedding?" His sweet mellow tone, sounded like heaven in my ears. I relaxed at the sound and touch of him.

"I couldn't do it. I was thinking about you so much, your name nearly slipped out as I was saying my vows. I couldn't keep it up anymore. I couldn't let you leave."

I small chuckle escaped from Alexander, he found my blunder amusing. When he cupped my cheeks with his ever so dreamy hands, I feel myself a warm glow inside.

"Now it's my turn to tell you." I say in a low tone.

"What do you-"

I place my finger on his supple lips, nodding for him to let me say what I needed to say.

"You, Alexander Pierce, have truly changed my life. I thought I knew was it felt like to be in love, but I was wrong. What you made me feel, I've never felt before. You captured me from that night in the pub. Ever since that day, I've not managed to get you out of my mind. I always want to be near you. I want to know more about you. It's you! I just want you! I'm in love with you! I am crazily in love with you, and I wish I never ignored it and we wouldn't be in this situation."

I let out a great sigh, feeling like the world had lifted away from my shoulders. I felt so light and satisfied. Happiness overflowed Alexander's face. As he placed his forehead upon mine, we both subtly weep with joy.

We couldn't take the minimal distance anymore. Our lips edge closer and closer. Till they finally meet. Our lips brush against each other like delicate butterfly wings. It seemed as if the butterflies in my stomach transported to our lips. The warmth of Alexander's lips sent shivers and tingles down my spine.

Heat was rising in my cheeks. I pressed harder to get more of our beautiful kiss. For once, this kiss was raw and real. There was no guilt, with the thought of hurting Calum, because I was free.

When we finally break away, we gazed into each others eyes. Taking in every single moment. It felt like we were floating on a cloud of love.

"There's another flight to Australia, come with me." Alexander suggested, as he managed to get hold of his breath.

"What?" I chuckled, "How? Sarah is waiting for me outside. I've not packed anything. I haven't got a ticket." Words instantly blurted out of my mouth, with being caught off guard with his crazy suggestion.

"I haven't got a ticket either. We can get an emergency ticket. Tell Sarah to go and forget your stuff, I'll buy you everything when we get there." Alexander held on to my hands, gently squeezing them. That's when I realised that he wasn't joking around, he was serious.

I was lost for words; I didn't know what to say.

"Let's just go. Me and you, in Australia. Let's get away from here. I want to spend time with you, get to know you properly." Alexander gushed.

I was never one to be spontaneous, but something about Alexander made me go crazy. This was now or never, I thought. Why am I thinking about this. I suddenly make a snap decision

"Okay. Yes. let's do it!" I happily agreed.

Alexander jumped excitedly, lifting me from the floor and spinning me around. He latched on to my hand, and we go to buy our tickets.

I've had never been so sure in my life. All I knew is that we were both in love with each other, so what was the harm. So many things had come in our way, we needed to get away.

I felt safe, happy and loved when I was with Alexander. Up until this point, my life had been an emotional rollercoaster. I peered over towards Alexander, this man truly had changed my life, I felt so content with him.

Who would have thought, me hesitantly applying for a promotion, resulted in falling deeply in love. I believed that everything happened for a reason.

I know life is always unpredictable, anything can happen. Right now, I was focusing on the present. Right now, I was crazily in love with Mr Alexander Pierce and I was ready to spend each day as it comes, solely with him.
