Chapter Thirty

It was clear to me why I loved to work. Alexander giving me time off was not a good idea. Time went by so slow. Often, I would find myself staring into space, repeating the same tedious tasks, constantly yawning.

This was the perfect time to sort the wedding out, but I had no interest in doing it all alone. It's funny how things changed, the fact that Calum was the one going to work, and I was the one home, virtually doing nothing.

Whilst at home, on one of the days I decided to follow Calum into work. This was bad of me to do, but he had already broken my trust once. He had kissed me goodbye and then left. I quickly followed, making sure I maintained my distance.

Intensely staring at Calum whilst in my car; my body lost its stiff posture and I fell back on the seat. I let out a shaky laugh, realising that Calum does in fact have a job. I was ridden with guilt for even doubting him in the first place.

One beautiful morning, the blue sky was accompanied with fluffy white clouds, that slowly drifted with the breeze.

I woke up and decided to spruce up the apartment. Changing into a pair of black joggers and a grey sweatshirt. I tied my hair in a messy bun and got stuck into cleaning.

I felt like I needed to clean to keep me distracted. Distracted from what? I wasn't sure. I needed to keep my mind busy. I started by putting on a pair of rubber gloves and crazily scrubbed the kitchen counters.

Calum entered the apartment, whistling, matching his mood to the bright and beautiful day.

"Hey, guess what!" Calum merrily beamed, skipping over to me and placing a kiss on my forehead. I responded to him by humming as I was focused on my cleaning task.

"I have just booked our honeymoon. Straight after our ceremony we are jetting off to Paris." Calum excitedly tapped on the kitchen counter.

I abruptly stopped, turning up to look at him. "Paris? Oh, wow! That's great. I can't wait." I forcefully responded, trying to smile.

As Calum turned around, the smile on my face faded. Deep down it's wasn't Paris, it's always been the Maldives.

The Maldives for me, was an escape from the city life. The white, grainy sand, with the crystal-clear blue sea, portrayed a sense of peace. The nature from the grass and the trees, made me feel relaxed as if I didn't have a care in the world.

I shook my disappointment out of my head. I didn't want to hurt Calum, so I planted a smile back on my face, going back to my cleaning.

"I remember you were saying that you had pictures of bouquets to show me. What happened to those?" Calum asked dropping himself on the sofa and propping his feet on the coffee table.

"Oh... Yes! The flowers," I mumbled, "I was supposed to show you the day I saw them, but then... You know... That thing happened."

I shuddered at the memory of Charles and Viv. Although I managed to get past it, I still got random thoughts coming into my mind.

"Well, I still need your help. The pictures are on my phone. Check them out and let me know." I waved to where my phone was.

Calum jumped up from the sofa, grabbing my phone to check the images I took of the bouquets.

"These are all good. I can't decide," Calum said, intensely staring at my phone.

I was focused on cleaning, I didn't pay attention to what was being said. Feeling hot, sweat forms around my head, my hair fell in front of my face. My fallen hair didn't budge, after my efforts of trying to blow it out of the way.

"Hmm, they're all nice, I'm not sure-"

Suddenly the room was filled with silence. Calum seemed to have lost his words. I waited for him to proceed, but silence still consumed our surrounding.

In the corner of my eyes, I saw Calum get up from the sofa. He made his way to me.

"What the hell is this?" He asked in a very cold tone.

I propped my head up, to see what he was referring to. At first, I didn't acknowledge it, but then I saw my phone shining brightly towards me.

A small gasp escaped my mouth. It felt like I had pins and needles scattering all over my body. A heavy feeling in my stomach weighed me down. It felt like the room around me was spinning. My hands started to jitter, my mouth opened trying to form simple words.

I was looking at the pictures of Alexander and I, from the night we passionately danced and kissed. The memory of having them pictures were evaporated. Now Calum had seen them. I was so dazed, I didn't question why he scrolled up so far.

Calum's jaw was clenched tight, his brows were furrowed downwards. Glaring at me, his nostrils were flared up. His lips were narrowed.

"Calum. It's not what it looks like," I pleaded.

I quickly took my gloves off, causing it to snap back on my hands. A small pain shot on my hand, but it was nothing to how I was feeling emotionally.

I threw the gloves to the side, trying to get my phone, Calum backed away, keeping the phone to himself.

"Not what it looks like? Well to me it fucking looks like you kissing your boss!" Calum snapped with spit flying out his mouth.

"Calum, please! Just listen to me," I blurted out as my eyes gathered water, "Remember when I told I kissed someone?"

"When? When did you tell me?"

"When I found you... cheating," I mumbled, at the painful memory.

Calum angrily let out an exaggerated sigh. "I thought we got past that-"

"We have!" I butted in, "I'm trying to tell you that I had already told you this happened. Our emotions were high and you didn't respond. This happened when I didn't know he was my boss."

Water fell down my cheeks, as if it was a river of water. I impatiently waited for Calum's response. He still gripped on to my phone.

He threw my phone on to the sofa, causing it to rebound onto the floor. I didn't care, I just wanted him to respond.

"Why are these pictures on your phone?"

"I... I don't know," I whispered, bowing my head down.

Calum paced up and down, running his hand through his hair. "It's all starting to make sense."

"What? What do you mean?" I stuttered, looking back at him to see him flustered.

"This Alexander, he's got some kind of thing for you. I know it." Calum growled, "I noticed it at the hospital. The way he looked at you. I bet he took advantage of you; he took pictures to gloat like an arsehole."

I squeezed my eyes shut, wincing at the words Calum was saying. I knew I couldn't defend Alexander. Deep down I knew it was nothing like that.

"When you found out he was your boss, why did you continue to work for him?" Calum questioned, narrowing his eyes at me, pursing his lips.

"Um, this job was a really good opportunity for me-"

"Has he ever done anything else?" Calum barged in.

"No!" I subtly lied. It's true that he never did anything I didn't want. All the intimate moments we had shared together, were pure bliss and it was something I wanted. This was something I couldn't tell Calum, he didn't need to know this.

Calum stood in front of me, he placed his hands on my shoulders. I hold onto his wrists, affectionately squeezing them.

"This job is no good for you, you have to leave."

I swiftly knocked Calum's hands off my shoulders, backing away from him. "What? No. I can't do that."

Calum closed the distance I created, cupping my face. "You might not be seeing this, but I'm telling you this job is no good for you. Your boss is no good, I just know it. He can do something to you, when you least expect it. Look how your life was put in danger. Who know what kind of enemies he has."

"But this job is my life, I love this job." I blabbed.

Calum let out a slow sigh, he leaned his forehead upon mine. "I know you do. I think it's for the best. I still want you do work, I just think you should look for a new and safer job, when we come back from Paris."

I shook my head in disapproval. I wanted to argue back, but I had no energy in me. I felt so drained from all the tears falling down. My breathing became shaky.

"You love me, don't you? Then do this for me." Calum said in a soothing whisper.

"I do love you... but-"

"But what?"

I released myself from Calum's hold. Turning away from him, I thought to myself. What shall I do? Maybe this job is no good for me. Maybe Calum is right.

I clenched down on my teeth. "Fine. Maybe you're right. I'll go now, I'll hand in my notice."

"Really?" Calum responded in a surprise tone, "You'd really do that for me?"

"Yes." I breathlessly let out turning around to face Calum.

He practically ran to me, wrapping his arms around me, hugging me tightly.

"This means a lot. I love you." He exclaimed as he goes into kiss me on my lips.

I responded by humming. Wiping away my tears, I grabbed my car keys and proceeded to leave. When I got to my car, I peered at myself in the mirror. My eyes were swollen, my nose was red and my lips were dry. I looked terrible, but I didn't care.

Sooner or later, I would have had to leave my job. My new life with Calum was starting soon and I had to focus on that. Turning the keys, the engine spluttered.

After proceeding to drive off, a dreaded thought entered my mind. It felt like a sharp pain shot into my heart, with the thought that it may be the last time I would see Alexander.

It was like a bullet had imploded on my heart. Sadness had consumed me, I could feel nothing but pain.
