Chapter Four
The next few days were pretty average. Somehow Calum and I were talking to each other, as if our fighting and bickering never happened. The cycle was tiring and constant. We fight, I storm out, someone apologies, we go back to 'normal' and repeat.
I also made the decision to lay off the job hunting for Calum. It felt like my continuous pressuring was putting a strain on our relationship. I held on to the hope that he'd get a job, all I had to do was wait for that time to come.
Friday morning, I woke up alone, Calum was gone, deep in my slumber, I didn't realise he had left. I had no idea where he went. Picking my phone to check the time, what grabbed my attention was an email. It was from work. Shooting up from my bed, my thumbs fumbled to unlock my phone. The email displayed a message, telling me to check my portal. My mind instantly thought about the job.
Without another second of deliberation, I took myself off the bed and got ready. Frantically running around, trying to get myself in check, my legs quickened up the pace and headed towards the car.
After swerving between the cars, I slammed the breaks and parked up, making a run towards my desk. My heart started to beat faster, thumping in my chest like a drum. I was unsure as to why I was feeling like this. I just stared at my computer screen. Thinking about whether I should check the mysterious message on my portal. Maybe I was too hasty, maybe I should wait for Sarah.
Thoughts were shooting around my mind, back and forth like a ping pong ball. A familiar chirpy voice captured my attention.
"Louisa? How are you here before me?" Sarah asked as she took her place at her desk.
"I got an email to check to my portal." My legs bobbed up and down, feeling restless with this unknown email.
Sarah's eyes widened and she gasped, "No way, what does it say?"
"I haven't checked yet; I've just sat here, staring at my screen."
"What are you waiting for? Check now." Sarah demanded.
I mustered the courage and clicked on to the portal. The anticipation of waiting for it to load up was killing me. Could it be any slower? I was finally in and there it was, the message. For now, I could only see, Dear Miss Watts...
I looked at Sarah, she was staring into my soul waiting for me to say something. With a great big sigh, I opened it up. My eyes ran over the screen, left to right. For a moment, I was trying to comprehend what it was saying. Sarah nudged me, still waiting for my response.
"I ... have been invited for an interview," I finally let out
Sarah squealed like an excited little school girl. "Yes! I knew you would get an interview. When is it?"
"That's the thing which caught me off guard, it's today, at twelve. I haven't even had time to prepare." I exclaimed, re-reading the message to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me.
"Wait what? Today? So much for giving your employees notice. You're going to go to it right? Where will it be held?" Sarah questioned.
"Of course, I'm going to go, I can't pass this opportunity now." I looked back at the screen to confirm Sarah's questions, "It's at the Undercroft, I have no idea where it is."
"The Undercroft? Never even heard of that place before." Sarah said, shaking her head.
"I'll have to check with the reception." I looked at the time again, ten minutes had already past. "Let's just forget about it for now."
I brushed the thought at the back of my mind. Everything about this felt strange. I felt rushed, this opportunity was not giving me time to prepare. I knew I had to give it my all.
***
I was fifteen minutes away from the start of my interview. As much as I was dreading it, it had to be done. Sarah wished me luck as I wave goodbye, as if I was getting ready to go to a battle. I made my way to the reception to find out where the Undercroft was. I noticed the snotty receptionist at the desk. Her eyes burned onto me as she noticed me approaching her.
"Hello, where is the Undercroft?" I asked hoping she would give me a simple and straightforward answer.
She looked at me, peering just over her glasses that were resting so far down on her nose.
"Go down there, past the doors, down the stairs, on your left." She said pointing, with no emotion on her face. I didn't bother to say thank you, I just smiled and made a swift exit.
I manged to find the Undercroft easily and I was surprised. I had never even seen or heard this part of the building before. Walking down the stairs I felt a change in atmosphere. Down here felt quite tense, people were walking past me, looking at me as if I was an alien.
I got to the reception desk, behind was a young woman, she looked nicer than the one upstairs.
"Hi, how may I help you?" she asked with a straight face. Subtly rolling my eyes, realising that all the receptionists were the same.
"Hi, I have an interview for the PA job... for Alexander Pierce." I brightly respond, grinning at her.
She looked at me for a spilt second too long, it made me wonder if I spoke another language and she didn't understand me. Without saying another word, she picked up her phone and told the person on the other end that I had arrived. This place felt peculiar, it was like I had entered another world.
A minute didn't even pass and a lady comes down to greet me, my first impressions of her was that she seemed nice and friendly; different to what I had been greeted with so far. She looked like she was in her mid-forties, her dark blonde hair was tied neatly in a bun, she was wearing a lovely black dress that hugged her figure.
"Miss Watts, follow me, if it's okay with you I would like to start straight away." She said, taking me to a small interview room. Her voice was low and mellow.
"That's fine with me." I replied whilst sitting down.
This interview didn't seem professional to me, she didn't have a computer, no paper or pen to make notes. Did she have all the questions memorised? How would she remember my answers? So many questions were floating around my head.
"Right, so my name is Vivien, most people call me Viv, I'll be conducting the interview. This shouldn't take long. Just so you know Mr Pierce will be watching the interview from his office, this is so he knows what the interviewees are saying, you will also get an instant response to whether you have the job."
The last bit she said took me by surprise. "That quick?"
"Yes, Mr Pierce doesn't like waiting around and he needs his PA to start on Monday. So, shall we get started?"
I took a deep breath and nodded for her to proceed with the questions.
"So, what are your weaknesses?" Viv sternly asked as she cocked her head to the side, smiling curiously.
I stared at Viv, dumbfounded at the first question. I cleared my throat and proceeded to answer. "Erm, I would say that I push myself too hard, I can overwork myself, there are times when I should ask for help but I don't, erm-"
"Okay great!" Viv chirped interrupting me. "This position requires you to help Mr Pierce make executive decisions, how good are you at making decisions?"
Scrunching my nose is pure confusion, I felt like I was frozen at the quick movement of this interview. I wasn't given the opportunity to finish my answer, and she was already on to the second question.
"Well, when I am passionate about something, I never let it out my sight. When I have my mind set on something it's pretty easy for me to make a decision no matter how hard the situation or the problem is." Saying this out loud made me think about Calum's situation, about how passionate I was to find him a job.
"Hmm okay, one last point. Mr Pierce has a very busy schedule and may require your assistance out of office hours, he would highly appreciate it, if his PA moved in to his house, how do you feel about this?"
I edged my head forward, confusion ran over me. Like this interview couldn't get any stranger, did she really say what I think she just said.
"I wasn't aware this was a requirement, I'm not entirely comfortable with it, as I have my own home, I live with my boyfriend. I don't think it would be appropriate." I said slowly hoping this didn't affect my chances of getting this job.
"Very well. Miss Watts, please sit tight I'll be back in about five, maybe ten minutes." Without another word Viv was gone and I was left in the interview room alone, so I think I was alone, the idea of Alexander Pierce watching me from the camera sent shivers down my spine. I started to doubt my decision going for this job. I wondered whether this would be right for me, but I couldn't back down.
Viv came back after ten minutes; she sat herself down and looked at me with her blue beady eyes.
"Miss Watts, congratulations Mr Pierce and I have decided to offer you the job, that is of course if you accept."
My mouth fell open, eyes wide as ever. I had so many questions. But the only thing I could do is mutter the words 'I accept' and shook Viv's hand.
"Perfect! Congratulations on your new job. Now, let's sort the paper work so you can be ready to start on Monday. I'm sure you will have great joy and satisfaction working with Mr Pierce."
Just like that Viv and I were off to the office to sort the paperwork. As of Monday, I was going to be the new PA of Alexander Pierce, I wondered what this new job had in store for me...
