(10) Trigger
Minhyuk Park:
Even though I had just woken up, I was still really fucking tired and my head was pounding. Being carried by San was like being carried by a bulldozer.
What time is it? I slowly opened my eyes, coming face to face with a very warm chest. I swear I could have slept there in the warmth for another ten years. I sat up, wincing when my vision blurred. That fucking asshole. Steph was curled into a ball towards the entrance, covered in what appeared to be Becky's sweatshirt.
"I know, I'm working on it." What the fuck? Becky's voice came from outside the cave.
Crawling over Santiago was no easy feat, but I managed...barely. Pushing the side of my face to the entrance of the cave, I'm sure I looked absolutely ridiculous, but that was the least of my concerns right now.
"I'm trying!" Becky sounded distraught as if she was trying to reason herself out of a stupid choice. "I thought you said th-"
"Shhh, someone is awake!" whoever this person was whispered.
I shook my head trying to think straight with my sleep-deprived mind. Was Becky talking to someone? Did I hit my head that hard? In the process of questioning my life, my legs ended up wedged between San's arms. Apparently, I was interpreted to be a giant teddy bear.
Finding myself even more stuck now, I used San as a base to propel myself through the tiny entrance. I landed with a thud unceremoniously at Becky's feet.
"Morning, Park." Becky helped me to my feet. "Are you feeling better?"
"Just peachy," I replied sarcastically "Not like I am in a camp with people who want to kill me at four in the morning." I raised an eyebrow questioningly. Becky nodded but then quickly looked into the direction of the woods. Her eyes looked tired as if she had taken a double watch.
"Do you see something?" I glanced at her, suspicious.
"No just thinking about...hunting." She didn't quite meet my eyes. "You knew Steph and Santiago weren't supposed to be here, didn't you?" It took a minute to process what she said.
"I mean, it doesn't take a genius. Neither of them were even remotely blending in." It was true, the duo lacked the presence everyone else here had cultured surrounded by people of similar standing.
"I should have known..."
"Known what?"
"Nothing. It's not important." Becky was obviously hiding something, I just didn't know what. I was about to press further but we were loudly interrupted by cursing coming from the cave. San slowly emerged from the tiny opening.
"You kicked me!" He snapped, jumping up and pointing an accusatory finger at me.
"Sorry, I got stuck in the entrance," I lied.
His outburst must have woken Steph up because she slowly dragged herself out of the entrance, muttering curse words.
"Great, now we're all awake," Becky commented dryly before glaring at me.
"Fuck you."
Steph blinked her eyes a couple of times, appearing half dead and pale. If you squinted just right she looked like a vampire.
"Is anyone else really hungry?" Steph asked.
San's stomach answered that question. We all snickered at that.
"What? I am hungry vampire bi-," San trailed off, his face reddening I'm sure my face looked the same when I got stuck in his arms. His arms were really warm.
Still snickering, we started walking in the direction of the mess hall. The sun was barely coming over the horizon by the time we reached our destination. It's fucking hot. The sun wasn't even up all the way and I swear to god I was roasting in that stupid building. We were one of the first people in line. Sitting at our usual table, we slowly ate our mush, watching as other kids trickled in. Half of them looked dazed while the rest were uncommonly anxious.
"You're dad runs Hayan?" Santiago's sudden outburst made me jump. I glared at Becky, knowing she was the only one who would have told them.
"Sorry," Becky said, sheepishly. Rolling my eyes I ignored Santiago's question.
"Anyways, who else wishes the sun would go hide behind a cloud?" I mouthed thank you to Steph for the quick save. Before long, we were joking around as if we were friends at school. Too soon, the bell rang and we were off to our classes.
After what felt like an eternity we met back under our tree having survived all of our classes . . . hopefully. I trudged over, my head still spinning from whatever computer nonsense I just had to sit through. TWICE. For some godforsaken reason, I got pulled out of Making Deals and Etiquette today to get 'extra practice'.
"Shit sis!" Santiago was wildly gesturing at Steph's noticeably burned fingertips.
"We learned how to hotwire a car today," she mumbled, "It did not go so well."
San's face flashed with some sort of...brotherly concern?
"Grabbed the wrong wires, huh?" A guy had sauntered over without our notice, faded pink hair mostly hidden under a baseball cap. He sounds like the dude from last night. Or was it this morning? I'm so fucking tired.
"Who the f-hell are you?" I managed to stop myself from swearing.
"A friend of a friend Mr. Park." Cuz that answered the question you ass hat. Also, don't call me mister. The last thing I want is to be my Father.
A man loudly coughed into a microphone making us all jump. Didn't know there were speakers outside. The mysterious guy had disappeared without warning and I was left to wonder where he knew me from.
"Min He-yuck Park, please come to the dining hall."
"Fuck." I got up and entered the building, ignoring the butchering of my name.
"It appears that you've earned yourself a tally," the bald man paused, "correct?" A small woman behind nodded furiously, suggesting I do the same.
"Yes."
"Right this way then," he grinned as he led me to a nearly empty room with a single chair and a desk.
"Please sit while Trigg gets ready." Who the fuck is named Trigg? Before long, a young woman entered, dark curly hair framing her sharp facial features who looked strangely familiar.
"Trigger." She held out her hand so I took it. Instead of a handshake, she pulled out giant ass handcuffs and forced my arm on the desk.
"Is your name actually Tri-" A sharp pain made me pause and look at the needle in my arm, ink slowly spreading. I glanced at her arm to see three of the same markings.
"Once you get your third, you'll need a new name. After all, no one wants to associate the Secretary of Defense's daughter with a past delinquent." As the words registered, I gasped in shock.
"You're Miranda fucking King?" I couldn't believe it. This is the same chick who posts those random workout challenge videos? This is Mr. King's daughter? The needle dug deeper into my skin, making me flinch. When the pain finally stopped Trigger wrapped up my arm before sending me out. Miranda King works here? In my confusion, I crashed into the bald man.
"Hold up there, son. We've got to go over some things." Shit.
"Now that you have one tally, some of your classes will be changed. In addition, here's your sleeping bag." The man held out a paper that was probably my new schedule. Still in a daze, I nodded and grabbed the piece of paper before walking over to San and the others.
"You look like you've seen a ghost!"
"Miranda fucking King."
