(09) Dance

Stephanie Johnson:

We slowly made our way back to our little cave, each taking a turn supporting Park until he collapsed and took Becky down with him. Normally I would've told him to suck it up and deal, but after all the ibuprofen he had, I'm not surprised he was barely conscious. I hope he doesn't have a concussion. After a narrow escape from losing his rather limp body in the river, Santiago decided he was the man for the job and carried Park over his shoulder. Becky grumbled quietly about dirt-caked clothes, even though there wasn't really any way to clean them at this time of the day anyways. I glanced at my own filthy clothes. Gross.

"You are so frickin' light," my idiotic brother lamented, "My cat weighs more than you." Park stayed quiet, although I'm not sure he had much of a choice. Santiago somehow managed to stumble over a root, causing the poor dazed boy's head to crash against his back. I hope he doesn't break his nose.

"Hrg." Park grunted in some sort of pain, causing Santiago to quickly set him down, verifying that his head was okay before swinging him over his other shoulder. Show off.

"I hate your stupid cat," I grumbled, not caring whether or not he heard me.

"You're just bitter because my cat is cooler than your dog," Santiago argued over his shoulder.

"Then how come your cat is scared of my dog?" I said with a triumphant smirk on my face, flipping him off as he fumbled with his words. As much I'd like to say otherwise, his cat was so much better with words.

"Now you listen here," Santiago snapped, spinning around and nearly colliding Park's face with a tree, luckily the boy only suffered from a slap in the face by a branch. "Mew Mew is a very sensitive cat and-"

"Seriously? You named your cat Mew Mew?" Becky laughed from behind us. Santiago almost spun back around, forgetting about Park dangling over his shoulder.

"Hey! You're gonna cause Park more injuries!" I yelled before slowing my pace, falling in step with Becky. We watched as Santiago manhandled Park into a bridal style carry. I looked at Becky before lowering my voice.

"Hey, do you like," she looked at me, dark eyes sparkling, "my bro or something?" Becky startled before waves of pink overcame her face.

"Wha-n-No!" Her outburst caught the attention of Santiago who turned towards us with a questioning face.

I glanced back at Becky to see her peeking at me through her bangs.

"I'm lesbian." Oh, oops.

". . ." the rest of the walk was quiet, seeing as Park remained passed out cold. As we neared the end of our 'journey', Park flinched hard enough to catch Santiago by surprise. My brother practically dropped him but managed to catch the boy at the last second.

"No... sto... stop... mother... me...," Park had begun mumbling, burying himself deeper into Santiago's shoulder. "please... sorry..."

"Hey, hey, it's alright!" my normally grumpy brother held him closer as he slowly drifted back off to sleep, eyebrows furrowed. I watched how Park held tighter and caught the genuine smile on my brother's face. Park's normally cold and angry exterior had slowly dissolved, now all he was was desperate and vulnerable. I looked at the two curiously, Maybe I have to rethink? Beside me, Becky had begun humming.

"Cute, aren't they?" she had paused to ask, before going right back in tune.

"I guess." I don't know if I'm a huge fan of this development, I thought back to last Homecoming, with Zoe's response.

"Two guys? Yuck." Zoe pointed at the cover of one of her gossip magazines. "What does that guy have that we don't?"

"I mean, we've got these?" Audrey gestured to her boobs which were practically spilling out of her dress. We were heading out to the dance in a few minutes and I was definitely struggling with my heels. They were barely three inches, but I felt tipsy.

"Sis, you wanna bring some flats?" Zoe had put her hands on her hips, eyebrow raised in a challenge. Audrey snickered behind her, as she pulled her hair into some extravagant bun.

"I'll be fine."

...

Halfway through the dance, my feet had begun bleeding. We made our way outside, pausing every once in a while so I could get my footing and to make a poor attempt to hide how drunk Zoe was. The girl was a mess when her date, John, or Jack, or Jas, I can't remember, called us over.

"Mmm... ah!" My head whipped around to sound, spotting two figures making out in the near-empty hallway.

"What the fuck?" Zoe pointed at them, "Caspar and Henry?" her voice was incredulous, as she swayed unsteadily. Both boys jumped away from each other in shock, before hightailing it out.

"Disgusting." Zoe, as if on cue, collapsed before throwing up. The next day, she couldn't recall much of the night before, besides having the time of her life. Audrey and I chose not to delve deeper into the topic. Caspar and Henry, however, avoided her at all costs.

I looked at the two again, trying to wrap my head around the concept. Surely if Becky has a girlfriend, then Santiago can have a boyfriend? I shook my head, this is not the time. Before long, we had approached our little hiding spot.

"Hey- uh, Steph?" Becky approached me as Santiago made a poor attempt to drag Park inside.

"Yeah?" she was fidgeting again, clearly nervous.

"Oh-uh-nothing..." I watched her tuck her dark hair behind her ear.

"You're stuttering."

"Am I?" she hid her face, "Well I'll, uh, go inside." Awkwardly, she turned away before crawling into the cave, I followed shortly thereafter. What was she going to say?

Once we had settled in, Becky suddenly sat up.

"Hey Steph, what do your parents do?"

"What?" Why does this matter?

"Well, my dad was a famous actor back home and Park's dad is the CEO of Hayan and his mom was a lawyer," Hayan? Isn't that the huge electronics company that rivals Orange? I thought about my O-phone that sat in a basket somewhere. Santiago had the Hayan V3, which in all honesty, had a much better camera.

"Umm, my dad is a freelance writer and Santiago's mom works at a restaurant." Becky inhaled sharply.

"What are you guys doing here?" What?

"Uh, my dad's friend Mrs. Niven recommended it." Clearly she was wrong.

"Jessica Niven. Oh my god! This all makes so much more sense." By now, Santiago was actively paying attention, huddled in a corner with Park's head on his lap.

"What do you mean?" His question echoed my thoughts.

"Er- this camp is technically for," Becky paused, "the more elite? I'm sorry, I don't know how to word this. Most of our parents kind of threw us here to fix our problems or whatever."

I was right. All those expensive clothes and weird mannerisms...

"Oh."

Awkward silence followed as I mulled over our situation.

We weren't even supposed to be in this hellhole. I thought back to the blonde guard at the gate and Keith's words while fighting Park.

"Well, this will be interesting." The man smiled, only now I realize that he was mocking us.

"How funny would it be to beat the son of Jaehwa Park with a weapon I'm not even trained in?" Only now I realize that too many people here recognized Park for it to be a coincidence.

"So who's on watch?" Santiago broke the quiet, causing me to glance over to see him playing with Park's hair. I raised an eyebrow before volunteering and escorting myself outside. There wasn't really much to do besides stare into the darkness.

"This is so stupid." Occasionally, something would rustle, but it was ultimately a stray rabbit or squirrel, strange because I don't recall either being nocturnal. A few times, I thought about skewering them for some meat, but the idea of skinning them made me sick. Hours seemed to pass and before long, my head was drooping.

"Hey," I turned to see Becky, "My turn, go sleep." Strange, I feel like I still had some more time?

"What time is it?" she glanced hesitantly at her watch, holding it away from me.

"Midnight." At this point, I was too tired to care, so I crawled inside and quickly fell asleep.

We shouldn't be here.
