(05) Park

Santiago Guzman

Steph talks a lot.

Kinda reminds me of her dad. I honestly don't remember when I started hating her, or if there was a good reason behind it. I just know that we end up fighting all the time and the only thing I can come up with is that Mom's last boyfriend was white and happened to be an ass. Even though we are building a life-saving shelter she is still talking. I don't remember the last time she talked so much, maybe when we first met? Let's just hope she doesn't start singing. Park was looking at me strangely, maybe I looked like I wasn't paying attention, which was true. His hair looks really soft though, maybe he used the same stuff as Steph? Park raised an eyebrow, I definitely need to focus on the conversation now.

"How come you said you got sent here for drugs?" Steph was confronting Becky. I glanced over and saw that the latter's face was bright red. Becky...Becky was really pretty, but those big glasses kinda hid that. Park would look good in glasses, maybe with a uniform, too. Wait. What am I thinking? Come on, Santiago, FOCUS on the conversation!

"Well, you said you stabbed your brother, who looked like he could beat me to a pulp, and Park looked like he was part of a gang I guess I wanted to fit in."

I glanced over to see Park looking very confused. His eyebrows are nice, I mean Steph has nice eyebrows, too, but they look kinda normal. I guess if Becky was talking about his leather jacket and earrings her assumption made sense. Hmm, earrings. I have earrings, but they look so much better on Park. Maybe he should get a lip ring to go with his whole 'vibe'. Also, why would you bring a nice jacket to a camp? Then again almost everyone else here seemed to be wearing expensive stuff. Ugh. Sidetracked again.

"So you got sent here because you stabbed Santiago?" Oh yeah, I kinda forgot about that. I glanced at my hand covered in filthy bandages. Maybe I should change them? I wonder if Park is any good at it. Nah, Becky looks more the part. Immediately I reprimanded myself. What the fuck that's sexist. Mom would have thrown a shoe at you.

"It was more of that I never acted violently before," Steph frowned. "Though if I had known all of this was going to happen," she gestured around her, "I would have gotten the award for the nicest person in the world." Focusing on her and building our shelter was really hard. I glanced at Park to see if he was faring any better. When do classes even start? How do you keep track of time here?

"Hey Park! Can I use that?" Steph was pointing to his pocket knife. How the heck did he get that through here? I mean I guess there wasn't a metal detector, but there was that weird line of tape. Did that only track electronics?

"I've been wondering about this for a while, but why the fuck are you guys calling me Park?" Steph immediately blushed a deep red, as did Becky.

"Wait, Park isn't your name?" I paused, "I mean, that's how you introduced yourself." Steph and Becky nodded in agreement.

"What? Oh shit, yeah. Park is my last name. It's kinda Korean tradition to give last name first. I guess all the time I spent dealing with people there rubbed off on me." What type of people was he dealing with?

"So what's your first name?" Becky pressed. He said something like Mikook, didn't he?

"Minhyuk."

"Mean...Hook," Steph struggled as I mouthed his name. Minhyuk. Sounds nice.

"Can I just call you Minmin?" I said it without thinking, as Minhyuk's face flushed.

"Uh..."

"Mean H-yuck." The girls were still struggling.

"You two can just call me Park until you figure it out." He sighed, neglecting to answer my question.

"How about Min?" I mean, in case of emergency, two syllables are kinda hard to keep track of.

"Only if I get to call you San." I've never had a nickname. Which explains why my stomach is fluttering. He's smiling, too. Maybe he hasn't had a nickname before, either?

"Sure." With that, we had reached a mutual agreement.

"Haha, bromance! You two are both blushing!" Steph pointed out, sure enough, my face was warm.

"Shut up and help me cover this trap with leaves." Min gestured to a hole in the ground.

"Why traps?" Steph questioned as she tied up her hair with her endless supply of hairbands.

"Because I don't care to be fucking killed in the night." That line reminded us of last night, the scream of horror cut off so abruptly. Silence ensued as we continued work. I pulled on a stick, buried deep in the ground. The rough edges pulled at my bandage and began to cut deep into my hands

"Aw, shit." blood had begun to drip. This is definitely getting infected. I wonder if that's how I'll die. That would suck. I mean at least I wouldn't have to deal with this camp.

"You dumb fuck." Min had appeared at my side. His eyebrows are furrowed, is he worried? Oh, I want to touch his hair. My own hair was technically soft, but the curls were too tangled to run a hand through.

"Yah. Focus." Min was holding my hand. Hmmm, It's nice to have a nickname. Maybe I should give one to Becky. Beck? Key? Be?

"Your hands are cold," I informed him. They were really freaking cold. Maybe he's sick. Or is he just cold? Or am I sick and I'm just really hot? Well I know I'm hot, I snickered at the thought.

"Shut up." Min reached into his pocket and pulled out a bottle, before pouring out a small amount, making my hand sting. The smell was strong and reminded me of something.

"Is that gin?" He said nothing, merely covering my wound with a bandaid. As silence pursued, there was no doubt in my mind that the substance was indeed, gin. Or something similar. Is he an alcoholic? Did he steal it? The lack of response was killing me as Min continued to bandage my hand.

"I don't really remember why I started hating him" Steph was still talking to Becky "Maybe it was because he had like three girlfriends at the same time."

"What? No!" I screeched, feeling my face heat up. That was not how that went! "They were friends, I swear!"

"Uh-huh." Her eyes stared into my soul as I pretend to be interested in a chipmunk the scurried by. Mmm, I could kill for some chicken right now...

"We should try hunting," I exclaimed desperately trying to change the conversation.

"With what?" Becky was grumpy, possibly because I spoiled their gossip session.

"Give me one of your hair bands." Min held out his hand towards Steph, who although looking confused, handed over one of her 'precious' hair ties. Why does she have so many? Steph rarely did anything with her hair besides throwing it into a braid. Taking the hair tie, Min whipped out his knife with a dramatic flair, securing it to the end of a stick.

"It is a spear!" I exclaimed, feeling as though I solved the Jeopardy question.

"No shit Sherlock." Steph snapped. Was she mad, too?

The next couple of minutes were spent discussing who would stay behind and who would go hunting. For some reason, Min and Becky did not trust Steph and me to work on the shelter together. I can't imagine why. Soon it was decided that Steph and Min would go out hunting and Becky would stay behind with me.

"No funny business, you two!" Steph giggled before skipping after the dark-haired boy.

My ears were still pink by the time both of them came crashing back into our campsite.

"You won't believe what we found!" Steph shrieked into my ear, her bright hair was a mess and her face was flushed. I glanced over and saw that Min was grinning and sweating, too. Did they find a body or something? Steph grabbed my arm dragging me through the woods. So this is how I die. Lovely. Soon we stopped at a small cliff that was barley chest high. Steph bent over, staring at where the cliff and ground met as if looking for something. I knew it, it's going to be a body.

"Over here!" Min called, about ten feet away, causing Steph to jog over and excitedly point at a hole.

"I accidentally stepped in it earlier!" Steph said, proudly.

"It widens out," Min said as if that was an explanation.

"There is a river over that way," Becky said excitedly, beginning to catch on. What the heck is going on?

"Am I missing something? Why are we so thrilled about a hole?"

"It's an entrance to a cave aka our new shelter, dumbass." Steph spoke slowly as if I was stupid. Which, honestly, at this point, I felt that way.

Becky, being the smallest, immediately crawled into the hole. Steph was quick to follow and soon I could hear them chatting inside. Min and I locked into a silent argument of who would go next. Finally, I relented under his glare, struggling to fit. Inside I was able to sit up and moments later, I saw Min stuffing the entrance with leaves.

"No one will be able to find us here," murmured Min, appearing to be convincing himself, rather than anyone else. Soon enough exhaustion caught up to me and I fell asleep.

Hope you enjoy + thanks for reading!
