Chapter 1

Kylo's Point Of View

Kylo Ren as he was known across Exogol was a knight who served the king. He had been trained by King Palpatine's head general Snoke. Kylo had become one of the finest warriors in the king's army, it was for that reason that he had been summoned.

Kylo knelt before the king's throne. "You summoned me, your majesty," he said.

"Yes, a month ago my granddaughter murdered my son then fled the castle. My troops have tried and failed numerous times to find her, but they came back empty handed each time. You are said to be my finest knight, now prove it and find her. I want you to bring her back to me dead or alive."

"Yes, your majesty," he answered.

"And remember, she is a murderer and a liar, believe nothing she says," Palpatine continued.

"Yes, your majesty," Kylo replied, then he stood and exited the throne room.

He went out into the courtyard and mounted his horse, then he road off towards the nearby village hoping to find some clue as to where the renegade princess had gone.

As he rode into the village, he kept his eyes peeled for any sign of the princess. He would look carefully at every young maiden that he passed, but non of them matched the description of Princess Kira: a girl, nineteen of age, slim and around five foot six inches. She would have red hair, hazel eyes and  a few freckles. According to the rumors, she was also very beautiful.

A commotion pulled his concentration away from searching for the princess. He turned to see a young boy with red hair that fell just a few inches above his shoulders, and he wore rags.

The boy ran through the streets as fast as he could. He dodged and wove between the people walking on the streets, nimbly avoiding the stalls and tables that lined the streets.

The boy ran towards him, pushing past him to flee down the streets.

"Excuse me," the boy said, but he didn't stop. He kept running as if his life depended upon it.

Kylo turned and watched as he ran away, wondering what would make a boy of the streets in a big enough hurry to actually push one of the king's knights aside. Most peasants gave him a wide breadth, avoiding him in fear.

Kylo turned to see a group of men running after the boy, pushing past pedestrians and knocking over stalls as they went. They were far less nimble than the boy had been and far clumsier, pushing past peasants who were walking down the street and knocking down stalls, tables, and chairs.

"Stop that boy!" one of the men called.

Kylo turned and ran after the boy. Being young, in good physical condition and well trained, he was far faster than the men who were chasing the boy.

The boy looked back to see him chasing him and he picked up speed. But the boy was growing tired from running so long and Kylo had only just began, he had energy to spare.

Finally the boy began to slow down, and Kylo quickly gained on him until at last there were only a few feet between them. He leapt forward, tackling the boy and bringing him to the ground.

The boy squirmed. "Let me go," he whimpered.

Kylo stood up, grabbing the boy's hand and yanked him up none too gently. "You're coming with me," he said.

He drug the boy back to where the men were waiting.

One of the men reached out to take the boy, but Kylo stopped him. "What do you want with this boy?" he asked.

"That boy is a thief my lord," one of the men replied. "And by command of King Palpatine, all thieves should be executed immediately." The man drew his sword and stepped towards the boy.

Kylo looked down at the boy next to him. His eyes were filled with fear and almost seemed to be begging him to protect him. The boy moved to stand behind him, hiding from the man.

"Wait!" Kylo said, pushing the man's sword down. "What exactly did the boy steal?"

"Fruit from my stall," said one of the men.

"And bread from my bakery," the baker added.

"So he stole nothing but food?" Kylo asked.

"No, but stealing is stealing and my fruit is my only means of making money my lord."

"Look at this boy, he's skin and bone. Have you ever considered that he might be starving?"

"Even so, it is the king's law," said the baker.

"He's just a boy," Kylo answered. "Where are your parents, lad?"

"Dead," the boy answered.

"See, this boy is an orphan. Can we blame him that his only means of survival is stealing. If he were allowed to become an apprentice and learn a trade, then he would have away to make an honest living, he might become a great man one day."

"I wold never trust this thief to become my apprentice," said the baker.

"Besides, he has broken the law, he deserves to die," the merchant added.

"Surviving is not a crime worth the death penalty," Kylo answered. "I'll pay off he's debt." He took out two purses full of gold and handed one to each of them. "Is this enough to pay for what he stole from you?"

They both nodded and took the gold.

"Now this boy's debts have been paid, you will forgive him and forget his crimes, you will treat him as if he had never committed any of them."

The two men nodded, then turned to leave before the knight could change his mind.

Kylo turned and looked at the boy.

"Thank you," said the boy.

Kylo nodded. "What's your name?"

The boy hesitated.

"You don't have a name?" Kylo asked.

"I do, it's...Rey," he answered, slowly.

"Well, Rey would you like to become my apprentice... my squire?" he asked. "It would be a lot of work, and I wouldn't be nice to you. It wouldn't pay well either, but I would feed you and give you a place to stay."

The boy looked at him for a moment. "You're offering me a job?" The boy sounded excited.

Kylo nodded.

"Well, I've always wanted to be a knight but..."

"Come on, kid," Kylo said, placing his hand on the lad's shoulder. "Don't stay here where your only means of survival is stealing. Take the opportunity to start a whole new life."

"A new life?" The boy sounded intrigued.

Kylo nodded.

"Very well, I accept," Rey replied.

"And you're willing to work hard to earn what I give you?"

Rey nodded.

"Then come with me," Kylo said. He turned and made his way back to the place where he had left his horse.
