Chapter 2; Dormitory Decorating

Rin stepped onto a bright green lawn, covered with little yellow and white dandelions. He started tapping the fingers of his right hand against his thigh in a rhythmic, repeating pattern.

Rin - "Dad, what do I do about feeding Jellie?"

Egyn - "Fret not, I have plans to create a salt water glade in front of your building. Séan will need salt water at least one to two two times a week to keep his gills hydrated."

Séan - "Thank ya kindly! Come on, KiKi is setting up our new bed! Let's go help him!"

Séan led the charge into the building and found Yukio in a room, setting up a bunk bed. Séan snuck up behind him and hugged him from behind.

Séan - "KiKi!"

Startled, Yukio dropped a piece of metal. It would've landed on his forehead, but Séan had a hold of the metal bar in place with a big smile on his face.

Séan - "Hey KiKi! Long time no see!"

Rin - "You saw him like ten minutes ago. Anyways, Séan, where's the kitchen?"

Séan - "Down the hall to the left. Be back in five minutes and fifty-two seconds."

Séan led Rin through the door, leaving Yukio and the Demon King of Water alone.

Egyn - "Mr. Okumura, thank you for housing my son and his companion. If there is anything you need, please do not hesitate to contact me."

Yukio - "Um, could you knock down that wall? There's not enough room for two more desks."

Egyn - "Understood."

A wall that connected to another room was swiftly knocked down and carefully broken into chunks. The bits of dust, drywall, and debris was nearly washed away out the nearest window.

Egyn - "So you are aware of it, there will be a saltwater glade at the front of the building. My son's jellyfish companion needs two cups of it per day as well as sunlight, and Mr. Burke will need to soak in it two to three times per week."

Yukio - "Okay...Hey, I have a question for you."

Egyn - "I will answer you as truthfully as I can."

Yukio - "Why did you take Rin? When we were babies I mean? When I was six, Father Fujimoto told me a dangerous demon kidnapped him from his crib."

Egyn - "Sit down."

Egyn led Yukio to his bed and the two of them sat down.

Egyn - "I was present for your birth. When the two of you were born, Rin was gifted with Satan's fire, the first of our family in fact. You were born an ordinary human, which was perfect for your safety. Nephilim children often take after their demon parent and are more often than not left for dead by their human parent. Being born human secured your safety with Fujimoto. However, Rin took after Satan. Fujimoto sealed away Rin's demonic powers within the Koma Sword: Kurikara."

Egyn clenched his fists tightly. Even the memory of watching his son's power being sealed boiled his blood.

Egyn - "Sealing a demon's power when they're young could lead to major medical complications later in life as well inevitable death to those around them should that seal fail. Because after having their power sealed for so long, they have no clue on how to control their strength or inherited powers. In Rin's case, he could've burned the monastery down. I took Rin into my care to raise him with his power so he could control it properly."

Yukio - "I had no idea..."

Egyn - "To seal a child's demonic power is to essentially reject them for what they were born as. It's repulsive and shows an incredible amount of disrespect. Anyway, have you any more questions?"

Yukio - "No. Thank you for being so honest."

Egyn - "Lying to a child about serious matters will do nothing but sow distrust between adult and child. I have never lied to Rin about anything and I will never lie to you."

Yukio - "Thank you, I appreciate that...alot."

Egyn - "You are welcome, child. Now I will create the glade and go speak with Samael."

Egyn vanished in a swirly water portal just as Séan walked in with Rin on his back and a little demon on Rin's back.

Séan - "Hello again KiKi. RiRi fell asleep during a riveting conversation with Mr. Ukobach. So I came to drop him on your bed."

Rin was deposited on Yukio's bed and covered.

Séan - "Mr. Ukobach, in twenty minutes, could you bring some takoyaki, tea, and an energy drink?"

The small, satyr-like demon made a sound of confirmation and scurried out the room.

Yukio - "There's a demon in my dorm building."

Séan - "Yup, Ukobach is one of Sammy's familiars and he's assigned to make our meals. RiRi wanted to say hi and establish friendly relations so they would be able to cook together without issue. Now let's get this bed built."

Séan was strange to Yukio. He knew precise times of when things would happen and he acted like he knew Yukio for years. He worked with Yukio assembling the bed like they'd done so a million times before. The bunk bed was assembled in record time. Rin was awake a few minutes after the bed was pushed into place. Ukobach showed up a minute after Rin woke up and was stretching.

Séan - "Perfect timing, Mr. Ukobach. RiRi, energy bomb!"

Rin caught the energy drink can with his tail and started chugging. Yukio watched the two half demons interact like normal teens. The classes of human exwires he sat in on didn't act so normally. It was refreshing if Yukio had to be honest. Séan sat next to Rin's legs on the floor munching on Takoyaki.

Egyn - "Samael is one of the most infuriating men in Assiah."

Egyn appeared out of nowhere cursing in a language Yukio could only assume was Gehennian. He kept his volume in normal speaking tones as he ranted.

Rin - "Dad, calm down."

Rin lifted Egyn into his lap and rested his chin on his head.

Egyn - "Apologies children."

Jellie floated into the room and floated beside Rin's head. Rin smiled as she rested on his head. He bopped his head from side to side, enjoying Jellie's tentacles swaying before his eyes.

Yukio - "What's the story behind that jellyfish?"

Egyn - "Rin and Séan found a moon jellyfish washed up on the sands of Akamaru. I took the dying creature and imbued it with some of my power. It was gifted to Rin on his third birthday. Jellie will live as long as he does unless killed by outside forces."

Rin - "Jellie's a good girl. Hey Yuki, in the classroom, can my seat be next to a window? Jellie needs six hours of sunlight a day as food."

Yukio - "What do you do when it's raining or snowing?"

Séan - "When the weather outside is frightful~"

Rin shoved Séan's head back with his foot.

Rin - "When Jellie can't get her sunlight, her diet is supplemented with extra seawater. So instead of two cups, she'll get eight to ten cups."

After they'd all eaten their fill Rin was by the door. Yukio was startled at how fast Rin moved. He was bouncing from foot to foot, seemingly anxious.

Egyn - "Rin."

Rin - "I could go by myself, there's usually benches at malls. You just won't let me."

Yukio - "Huh?"

Séan - "Sorry to disappoint you RiRi, but the nearest mall isn't open. We'll be going shopping tomorrow after classes have ended."

Yukio - "Okay, why do you talk like that?"

Rin - "Like what?"

Yukio - "Like he knows things with such certainty and confidence! How are you so sure we'll go to the mall tomorrow?"

Egyn - "Apologies Yukio. Séan was born with Divination Abilities through his father. He can sense the flow of time and act accordingly."

Yukio - "Divination, huh? What kind of demon is your father?"

Séan - "Human~ My mother was a Siren. My father intercepted her each time she rested on a beach during his visits to my extended family in Southern Africa. My dear mother became so curious of him she got to know him and they courted, married, and moved to Akamaru to have me. I was born with my human family's Divination abilities. My Gran sends me new bones every year for my birthday, although in a few days it’ll be Auntie Sue sending them."

Yukio - "Bo-bones?!"

Séan - "Yuppers! In a few days I'll be sent some vertebrae and some other small bones from my then late Gran and some other mementos from Africa. Maybe chicken bone, rabbit bones, I'll get some shells from Akamaru, some feathers, some Gehennian rocks, some marbles, river stones -"

Rin - "Séan uses a variety of personal stuff with his bones..."

Rin started swaying on his feet. Egyn flicked his wrist and Rin fell forward on a semi-squashy sheet of water. He was then levitated back to the bed and his head was laid in Egyn's lap. Jellie floated next to Rin's head, then rested on Rin's stomach. Egyn combed his fingers through Rin's hair as Rin slept.

Séan - "As Rin was saying, all of my stuff holds some connection to my home whether it be in Ireland, South Africa, or Akamaru."

Yukio - "Ireland?"

Séan - "My Pa's ma was born and raised in Ireland and died in childbirth with my Pa's sister. I spend time with my family in both continents as well as Akamaru. My Pap can make some good stew and soda bread. I'll make it for you sometime."

Yukio - "Where are your parents? Akamaru seemed pretty deserted when Mephisto and I showed up."

Egyn - "It was shopping day. Twice a month, the inhabitants of Akamaru take ships to the mainland to trade fish, shell and coral jewelry, fruits, and bones for seeds, seasonings, cloth, and whatever other essentials we need. Anyone who desires something non-essential must come up with their own wares to sell for money."

Yukio - "They had to come up with their own pocket money?"

Egyn - "In a sense. The children of Akamaru have a small restaurant on the mainland where Rin is the head chef and kitchen manager and Séan as head of the waitstaff and up front manager. I, of course, own the building, but only in name. The children run the restaurant. As such, they have quite the small fortune to purchase whatever they desire on the mainland. As all the children of Akamaru are educated by their parents and myself, their little restaurant endeavor was a brilliant way to learn economics, prices, cooking, how to be personable, etc."

Séan - "Shopping Days are so much fun! Rin has to be accompanied every time or else he'll fall asleep in a pile of fruits."

Rin - "Jerk, that was one time."

Rin grumbled and turned on his side. He curled around his father, pressing his face into Egyn's stomach. His tail curled and uncurled repeatedly.

Egyn - "Yukio, Séan. The local convenience should still be open. Samael has given both you and Rin a card with a hundred thousand yen spending limit a month. Go to the local shops and purchase supplies for the both of you."

Séan - "Understood, come KiKi! It's bonding time!"

Séan dragged Yukio out of the bedroom leaving the other two alone.

Egyn - "Rin. What troubles you, my child?"

Rin - "Everything is different. This room smells nothing like home. There's no warm sun peeking through the window, no salt in the air from the ocean, no birds, no sound of crashing waves...Does this place even get decent thunderstorms?!"

Rin's tail curled around his father's ankle. Jellie left Rin's side to rest by the window. Egyn leaned down to press his forehead against Rin's, causing Rin's tail to uncurl and sway lazily behind him.

Egyn - "I know my son. It'll take time before this new environment feels like another home to you. Just remember that you have your father and your brothers here with you. I know you were so very excited to get to know Yukio, so don't let this new environment get in the way of that. Now, let's go make some dinner, just like we used to."

Rin - "Alright Dad. I'm thinking of a fish tacos with a mango pico de gallo, some cilantro-lime rice, pickled vegetables, and some fruit salad for dessert."

Egyn - "Very well, I will retrieve some mahi mah, fruits, and other necessities and will meet you in the kitchen."

Rin made his way downstairs and found Ukobach prepping some pork and rice.

Rin - "Hey Ukobach, Do you want to try making Mexican cuisine?"

<~>

Séan and Yukio arrived back after an hour. They both watch the father-son duo work together in the kitchen in a beautiful harmony. Egyn was standing on a raised platform of solid water, mixing a bowl of fruits and Rin was assembling a multitude of tacos on a platter.

Egyn - "It's rude to gawk boys. Help set the table for dinner."

Soon they were all seated.

Séan - "Bone apple teeth!"

Yukio was pleasantly surprised at how delicious the food was. He normally didn't like fish, but the tacos were light, seasoned nicely, and were easy on the stomach. The salsa on the side was delicious too, not too spicy and had a fruity flavor that worked with the fish and rice. The rice was Yukio's favorite part and he even went back for more of it.
