Chapter 9: The Truth

(This is the last fluffy chapter you get. After this, it will go downhill in some aspects. Don't worry! I promise this will be a happy ending! However, no pain, no gain! A story isn't good unless the characters go through a character arch and have a little trauma. Who knows what will happen? Oh, wait, I do! Anyway, one little fluff chapter. Enjoy!)

The heirs and their friends were resting at the Castle of Diamonds to recover as quickly as they could. However, Arthur had kept to himself the entire time and away from Francis who was bewildered by his change. As a result, the baker was often either baking sweets or taking up drawing that he used to do whenever he had free time. This led him to sitting at a balcony and sketching, but he found himself sketching himself with his friends and Arthur. He groaned before tossing the sketchbook behind him only for it to be caught by Duncan!

"Wow, you somehow made my little brother appear handsome and caring! How did you do that?" Duncan asked in a tease before approaching the startle baker, "Oh, relax, baker! I am not uptight! If anything, I am too loose and carefree that my brothers keep me in line. So, why are you acting like a lonely Victorian lady here without the cats here instead of with my little brother?"

He took the seat next to the baker before returning the sketch book to him. That sat in silence with Francis unsure of how to even speak with the oldest prince about his relationship to Arthur.

"Arthur's sad" Duncan answered in a simple tone that broke Francis's thoughts easily, "You know, that rabbit misses you"

Francis huffed before crossing his arms over his chest, "He must have a funny way of displaying that affection then. Moi could not tell since he was keeping to himself and turning away from my offers"

"Aye, he does that" Duncan confessed with a shrug, "That is our fault in a sense. We were separated after our mother's death. He didn't have us to be around. We heard from the advisors that he was crying for us, but they wouldn't let us reach him. So, I decided to give him friends at least. It helped, but not enough"

Francis looked at Duncan with a perplexed expression, completely caught off guard by the prince. Why would he help him with his little brother? Francis was sure that the brothers must be furious with him for stealing his heart when he was supposed to be engaged.

"You know, I am not furious with ya lad" Duncan reassured with a grin before rubbing his head, "If anything, I'm thankful! You drew Arthur out of his shell and showed him how wonderful life can be. I can't thank you enough for that. Sure, he was a pain in the ares, but he's smiling. He's having fun and made memories as well as friends of his own. I couldn't ask for more! Now, I bet you wondering why I am telling you this. Easy! We approve of you!"

Francis felt relieved and a huge weight off his shoulders, but he still felt conflicted about it as well. His distaste for the monarchy was due to the poor management, but he didn't realize how much Arthur and his brothers were suffering too. He shouldn't have assumed.

"Hey, I am sure everyone assumes something about the other. Nothing to be ashamed of as long as you learn from it" Duncan said before he grabbed Francis's arm to pull him up to his feet and shoving him out the room with the sketch book in hand, "Now get on with it! Go and woo him!"

Francis nearly tripped through the door and was surprised to see Gilbert, Clarisse, and Liam standing by the door! Liam hid his face with Gilbert laughing as Clarisse sighed with a smile of relief.

"How long were you listening to that?" Francis asked with a laugh as his sister gave him a side huge, "Very well, I shall sweep him off his feet! You are welcomed to observe!"

They laughed as Francis went to search for his prince charming with everyone running after him except for Liam who stared up at Duncan with a curious expression.

"Why?" Liam asked curiously.

Duncan answered with a grin as he ruffled Liam's hair, "Because I want him and the lot of ya to have your happy endings too. Now, get on! I know you want to be there when it happens! I am not going to stop you! Though, do make sure Arthur doesn't run away like he used to, that little rabbit"

Liam nodded his head before running towards the group with Duncan sighing in relief.

"You know, you're not slick, Gilbert" Duncan called as he noticed that the Clover Prince didn't leave, "You're more aware than you let others believe, you know?"

"Ja, well, I can understand too. I have a little brother too. I don't want anything to happen to him either. So, let's get going. I already sent a letter to Vash about the situation using Gilbird. Do you think you'll hear from Sean today?"

"I hope so" Duncan confessed with a shake of his head, "He's the only I trust to run the place besides Dylan. I don't want those advisors to ruin anything while I am not there. He's good at that despite the crying from time-to-time. Does Roderich and Yao want to join us?"

"Nein! Both are way too invested in the mushy love that your little brother and my best friend have going on! Boring!" Gilbert declared with a shake of his head before marching forward with a chuckling Duncan behind him.

As for Arthur, he was in the library with Roderich, João, and Yao. The youngest prince was content with reading his book about poetry, but he ended up reading love poems. It frustrated the prince, but he kept his distance from Francis. He was sure the baker would want to rethink their relationship and not share his feelings anymore despite the fact that Francis did rush to save him. Oh, why couldn't the youngest prince think straight when he is clearly not?!

He slammed the book shut and groaned with his face in his hands, "What is wrong with me?! Why can't I think about anything at all?!"

Roderich took a sip of his tea with Yao answering without missing a beat, "Because you're still in love with him"

Arthur's expression flushed as he nearly spilled his tea as Yao snickered at his reaction. Arthur sent a glare at the chief who only shrugged in response.

"In the Kingdom of Hearts, we have legends about true love and bonds between loved ones" Yao informed before sipping his own tea, "I can confirm that the legends are true since I can see such red strings around you to your baker"

The youngest prince slammed his tea on the plate before lunging at Yao who effortlessly moved away from his strikes with ease and grace. Roderich sighed at them as he hoped to have met royals to have a civilized conversation with, but that was in vain. He finished his tea and snack in time to see an exhausted Arthur and triumphant Yao.

"Bugger off" Arthur snapped before sitting back in his chair and staring at the book of poems with a solemn expression.

"Care to tell me why you are staring at the book for love poems instead of taking with the baker who has stolen your heart?" Roderich commented with a disapproving expression, "Surely, you would have the bravery to do this"

Before Arthur could snap at the Prince of Clovers, they heard footsteps approaching them. Arthur whipped his head around to see Francis being one of them! Arthur prepared to sprint as Yao casually extended his foot to trip Arthur before taking Roderich's hand and fleeing! Arthur cursed under his breath as he slowly raised his head to glare only to be met with Francis's bright smile!

"Ah! What are you doing here?!" Arthur shouted in a defensive manner with his expression completely flushed.

Francis only held his hand out to him with a charming smile that made the prince pout and even infatuated with the baker.

"Come on, mon amour!" Francis offered with a sweet and caring expression, "Let's have some fun together, s'il te plait mon prince?"

Arthur lowered his blushing expression and shaking his head, much to Francis's sadness until he noticed the book of poems Arthur was reading. The baker took the book and skimmed a few pages as he noticed some were marked.

"Aw! Was mon petit lapin thinking about me when reading his book of poems? Mon cher, you're full of surprises if you ask moi!" Francis cheered as he read a few before Arthur hesitantly approached the baker to sit next to him and turn the page on the book.

Arthur took the book before turning a few pages to show the baker another poem to speak, "Well, I think this one is better for a frog who actually shows his true colors by helping the princess. And if you turn the next page, it will talk about a painting. I've heard you like art, so this one might be to your taste if you ask me"

Francis simply stared at the prince whose expression changed to warm and soft when he explained the meaning of the poems to him. It turned out that Arthur had poems that connected to people important in his life.

"There's something sweet and almost kind" Francis hummed as he continued to observe the oddly wholesome prince who continued to express the meaning behind the poems, "But he was mean, and he was coarse, and unrefined!"

"Ah, but I will find poems for Gilbert and Antonio" Arthur reassured the baker in a flustered manner, "It will take some time since everything is happening. I do have more if you want to know what I think about others"

Francis hummed again as he nodded his head in interest at the poems, "And now, he's a dear! And so unsure. I wonder why I did not see it there before"

Arthur let the baker take the book before he noticed a sketchbook on the table. He noticed the baker was distracted and took the sketch book to see the sketches. He smiled softly at the drawings of Clarisse and Erzsébet each doing their tasks with delightful expressions. He flipped a few pages to find a drawing of himself! What surprised the prince was the soft and smiling expression of himself!

"Is this me?" Arthur asked as he showed the drawing to Francis who glanced and smiled brightly in agreement before returning the sketch book to feel the baker's soft hands.

The prince's expression was flushed but also in awe as he hummed, "He glanced this way, I thought I saw. When he touched, he didn't shudder at my hands. No! This can't be! I should ignore it! But then, he's never gazed at me that way before"

Arthur stood up to hide his blushing face away from the baker who only laughed at his reaction to the drawing.

"I shall get us some tea and snacks! I assume we will be here for a while! You don't need to follow me nor think highly of me! I am doing this for us!" Arthur snapped as he marched right to the kitchen, leaving a warmed heart Francis.

Shrugging and ignoring the prince's words, the baker followed the prince with everyone else staring at a respectful distance and overhearing them.

"New and a bit alarming!" Francis sang happily, "Who'd have ever thought that this could be?"

He joined the prince in the kitchen to see the chiefs and staff get to work, but Francis had another idea.

"Let me cook, mon amour" Francis whispered warmly as he then rushed to the stove and grabbed some bread and ingredients, "It will be fun to cook for you! You can help too!"

Arthur was flustered as he simply nodded his head before noticing the gazes of the staff and chiefs. He snapped at them to leave and carry on with their own business with them only giggling and leaving the young couple alone.

Francis took some whip cream to tap on Arthur's nose to fluster him before singing, "True, that you're not a prince charming, but there's something in you that I simply didn't see!"

Unbeknownst to the couple, everyone else was peeking through the doors to see them. Dylan was about to swoon at the sight who was caught by João who was holding a bright grin. Clarisse pressing a hand to her heart in a warm manner, Liam held a stupified grin, Roderich adjusting his glasses with a small smile, and Yao held a knowing expression at the sight of them together.

"Well, who'd have thought?" Roderich pointed out as he made sure to clean his glasses to ensure he wasn't seeing things.

Yao snickered before walking away to give them some privacy, "Bless my soul!"

Clarisse shrugged in a warm tone with a sweet smile, "Who'd have known?"

"Who indeed?!" Liam shouted before Dylan covered Liam's mouth with his hand who chuckled nervously.

Before both brothers then shared a warm smile to then hugging each other, "Who'd have guessed?!"

João even held a curious expression to add as he stood between the brothers, "That they come together on their own?"

Dylan pointed out with a cheeky expression, "It is peculiar!"

"We will wait and see!" Liam said excitedly as he leaned against his big brother.

"A few days more!" João interjected as they shared a laugh.

"There may be something there that wasn't there before!" all three sang warmly before deciding to leave them alone.

Roderich adjusted his glasses one more time to ensure he wasn't seeing things. Then, he smiled as he had a wonderful thought when he stared at Francis holding a whisk for Arthur to taste the chocolate. Arthur took a bite from it as he smiled with the baker happily grinning. Instead of them, the Prince of Clovers saw himself creating a wonderful confectioner with Erzsébet! He felt his cheeks heat up before smiling fondly.

"You know, perhaps there's something there that wasn't there before" Roderich finished in a sound manner, "There may be something there that wasn't there before"

Finally walking away from them, the couple shared laughter, jabs, and sweet delights with each other before heading back to the library to read poems, music, and sketch together. Both shared to sit on a red, cushion chair with Francis sitting on it first and holding his sketch book with Arthur on his lap and reading from the book of poems.

As for Duncan and Gilbert, Gilbird finally arrived with a couple of letters. Gilbert let the bird fly around his head until resting in his hair. Gilbert took the letters and sighed in relief to read one from Vash and Eirika about Ludwig. They were doing well and ensured their kingdom was safe. The second letter was a report about the state of the Kingdom of Spades from Sean! Duncan ripped the letter out of Gilbert's hands to read for himself with worry covering the prince's face.

"We need ta go back now" Duncan answered seriously, "Sean's in trouble, and we've found Antonio. Rally the others"

Gilbert nodded his head in silent agreement as both went to get their friends and guards to inform them of what is transpiring. Gathered in the throne room of the Diamonds where everyone was alarmed to hear the news.

"We need to go back!" Arthur declared strongly as he prepared to march back only for Francis to hold his hand and make him wait to hear what his brother has to stay.

"Oi, trust me, we are going back, but I want us in groups before we do that. From what Sean's informed me, the main cause of this whole botanical garden that is growing tomatoes and vines. We need to head to the center of the palace. He's got to be there. Now, I'll round up the army. I am sure the baker wants to check on his bakery. The rest of us will help the people get to safety. Don't get hurt and come back alive, do I make myself clear this time?"

He was worried. He left Sean alone to deal with this. Duncan wasn't going to keep one of his brother's waiting anymore. They were going back home and finding him as they stop the vines from hurting their home and people. Dylan, Liam, and Arthur knew that as well, but they didn't expect to hear Gilbert's obnoxious laugh with Roderich and Yao standing with him.

"Don't you dare count us out either!" Gilbert declared with his hands on his hips before pointing to the two people with him, "Roderich is head over heels for the waitress, and the chief here wants to see how this end! You've got our help! Don't you dare count us out!"

Laura agreed as she and João stood up from the throne, "And we will keep the boarder open to ensure the people will be safe. They can come here for safety. Please be safe and come back alive"

She pleaded to them as everyone nodded their heads and left to return to the Kingdom of Spade. Arthur turned to leave, but Francis's grip remained on his hand.

"What is it?" Arthur asked as he turned to see the worry baker and stopped moving, "Is something wrong, my love?"

Francis rested his head against Arthur's to speak, "Mon amour, please be careful. Don't do anything that will take you away from moi et tes frères. Nous t'aimons"

Arthur flushed as Francis only smiled softly.

"R-right! Of course! I will do that! And you too, frog! I don't want anything to happen to you either! Your little sister and friends would be in a panic without you!" Arthur answered in flustered manner.

Together, they walked out of the Kingdom of Diamonds to return to their home. Not without telling each other half-truths with a vow that lacked affection for each other as they went to save their home.
