Long ago, eons before our time, six gods were born to the Titans Rhea and Cronus. These six were Zeus, the god of thunder and the sky; Hera, Zeus' wife and, quite appropriately, the goddess of marriage and women; Hades, the god of wealth, the dead and the king of the underworld, as well as the eldest son; Hestia, the virgin goddess of the hearth; Demeter, goddess of the harvest and agriculture; and Poseidon, god (and ruler) of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. These six were the original gods, and five of them resided on Olympus, but soon it grew to became home to six other gods. Ares, Athena, Hermes, Artemis, Apollo and Hephaestus were these six. Hestia gave up her seat in Olympus sometime later, allowing Dionysus to take her place.

Thousands of years later, the gods decided that they would finally step down and allow the next generation to take up their respective mantles. To do so, they decided to host a grand event called a Selection, to take place in an expansive estate that housed all of the selecting gods and goddesses, located at the base of Mount Olympus between Thessaly and Macedonia.
