Asher and Danny were snuggled up on the sofa, a soft, deep brown blanket covering their bodies as the scenes from their favourite movie played out on the flat screen in front of them. Danny's body was pressed up against his boyfriends comfortably, and Asher had an arm draped over the smaller boy.
"Ash, pass the popcorn," Danny demanded with a smile, and Asher didn't hesitate to pass him the large bowl.
Danny shoved so much popcorn into his mouth that a few pieces fell out of his mouth, hitting the blanket and falling onto the floor. Asher laughed and caught one before it hit the blanket, throwing it in his own mouth.
"Messy," he mumbled under his breath.
Danny slapped his arm and mumbled, "Stupid head," under his breath. That was pretty much as dark as Danny's vocabulary went, and Asher knew this, faking a gasp for a few seconds before laughing.
Asher was still laughing, rubbing a hand along his arm like it hurt, even though it didn't, when his phone went off. He reached over Danny to get his phone off of the table, and read the message.
Party at your place tonight? I'll bring the girls, you bring the beer? – Chad
Danny was still tucked under his arm and Asher took a moment to take in everything about his boyfriend. Danny's dark hair was slightly dishevelled from their couch cuddles, and he was watching the television with deep blue eyes which were surrounded by thick lashes. Danny must have sensed that Asher was looking at him, as he brought his gaze away from the movie and looked up at his boyfriend with a curious look for a second. Asher didn't say anything, he just leant down and pressed a kiss onto Danny's lips. Danny smiled and turned his gaze back to the television.
His phone buzzed again. I know you are usually busy Saturday nights, but PLEASE!! – Chad
Asher sighed, he usually was with Danny most Saturday nights, but this weekend Danny had to leave early because it was his father's birthday the next day and so they had planned to spend the day together. He wished that Danny could stay over like most weekends, but he guessed that having a wild party would be a sure fire way to prove to his friends that he didn't spend his Saturday nights playing Tetris on his phone or something. He always had some phony excuse for why he was busy, a family dinner, a party with other friends, a date with some cute girl he had met the day before, but still, having a party would probably be a good idea, and it didn't hurt that his father was away on a business trip until the Monday.
Sounds good, be here at eight. – Asher
He looked up from his phone to see that Danny was looking at him again. "Who are you texting?" he asked innocently, completely unaware of the total lie which was about to be thrown in his face.
Asher shrugged. "Just talking to Beth about coming over tonight for dinner."
"Replacing me, huh?" Danny teased, and he even winked at the end, just to make sure that Asher didn't take what he said too seriously. That was the sort of person Danny was, so it didn't come as a surprise to Asher. Danny was never one to tease, threaten or anything of the sort. Danny was a kind of pure that Asher had never come across in his life, and maybe that had been one of the reasons that he had been drawn to him.
"Never," Asher promised, kissing his cheek and making Danny smile.
Danny reached up and tossed a piece of Asher's sandy blonde hair around. "Your hair needs a cut, it's getting so long that I can't even see your face, and a beautiful face it is."
Asher nodded. "Yeah, I'll get it cut soon."
Danny smiled and rested his head against Asher's chest again, turning his eyes towards the movie.
Asher's phone buzzed again. Dude you are awesome, the guys and I will be there at eight to help set up and the others are set to arrive later tonight. Maybe we can even get you lucky tonight ;) – Leon
Asher sighed, turning his phone over on his leg. He was sure that the texts from his friends were going to be streaming in all night, looking forward to the party, promising to bring music and beer, people asking how many plus ones they were allowed. He didn't mind it, but he would rather spend these last few minutes with Danny before he had to leave.
Asher knew how hypocritical he was being, he wanted to spend time with his boyfriend so that he could not miss him so much when he threw a crazy drunken party with a bunch of random girls that he would pretend to be interested in all night. It wasn't like he had intended for all of this to happen. It wasn't even one big lie that started it all, Asher didn't get out his blow horn and scream to the world he was single and straight. He didn't hire out a billboard that had a photo of him with the words girls come at me. To be fair, he didn't deny it either, it just sort of happened.
It had been his first day at a new school, it was junior year and he was walking down the halls when a cute blonde girl named Bethany had befriended him, thankfully the girl had a boyfriend. He had been nice to her, and she had in turn introduced her to her friends, who just so happened to be the most popular people in the entire school. The guys were hot, jock types and the girls were pretty enough to be models, but most of them just spent their time on the cheerleading team.
He had tried to fit in, and through that came the image that he had now; the serial dating, dumb jock Asher, and there was a part of him that liked it. He liked the attention and the friends and the reputation, so he never corrected them, and that's how the lie was born. It wasn't one lie, it was a series of actions that seemed so small and inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, well, until he was in too deep. Now they were in the first few weeks of their senior year and the two had been dating for over a year and a half, and Asher wasn't about to tell Danny about how he acted at school.
Danny sighed against his chest. "I should go home, it's getting late and it's an hour drive."
The distance between them was one of the reasons that the lies had been able to go undetected for so long, the two shared none of the same friends and went to different schools.
Asher pretended that he didn't have to go, and tightened his hold on Danny. "Can't you stay with me forever?" he pled, burying his face into Danny's soft dark hair.
Danny shook his head as much as he could without practically head-butting his boyfriend. "I'll see you next weekend, you're coming to mine right?"
"Of course, and I will actually stay until Sunday night," Asher told him cheekily.
"Good, because I miss you," Danny admitted, and the boy looked almost vulnerable with his eyes those big, wide pools of blue.
"I miss you too, Dan." Asher pressed his lips to Danny's in a quick kiss. "I'll be thinking of you every day."
Danny then smiled that gorgeous grin of his and Asher sat back and let go of the hold he had on Danny. Danny got up and disappeared into Asher's bedroom, returning only moments later with a large black duffle bag slung over his shoulder. Asher grabbed his hand and pulled Danny close to him as they walked out of the house, stopping beside Danny's car.
It had been a present from Danny's father so that he could drive down to see Asher more, and the shiny black car sat proud in the middle of Asher's drive way. The expensive car fit right in with the neighbourhood. Asher's father ran a pretty successful consulting company which allowed them to live in such a lavish neighbourhood. The houses surrounding Asher's were all large and classical looking but it was clear that they were pretty newly built.
"I don't want you to go," Asher told him, pressing Danny up against the dark car, pressing his face into his neck, and wrapping his arms tight around him.
Danny giggled and squirmed in the firm hold. "Ash," he laughed out, trying to break the hold Asher had on his body.
Asher broke away and looked into Danny's eyes. "What you aren't even going to miss me?"
Danny smiled that gorgeous smile again and simply said, "I love you Ash."
"Love you too, Dan."
Danny reluctantly got into the car, fiddling with his phone for a few seconds before throwing his duffle bag over his shoulder and backing out of the driveway. Danny blew Asher one last kiss as he disappeared down the street, not to be seen again for a whole week.
Asher trudged back into the house, missing Danny already. He walked over to the sofa and picked up his phone, realising that he was right about the many texts that he assumed would be bombarding his phone all night.
Leon just texted me about the party, see you tonight! – Bethany, Party timeee! – Lisa, Looking forward to tonight, save a dance for me ;) – Maisy, Can I bring my boyfriend?? – Sue, Please tell me there will be hot chicks at this party! – Rick, Be there at eight!! – Chad, Your house can fit like 50 people, right? – Leon, I miss you already - Danny
He replied to the last text first. I miss you too, text me when you get home so I know you are home safe! – Asher. He then sent out some short worded replies to the other people.
Asher had been looking at himself in the mirror when there was a knock at his door. He ran down the stairs, thankful he had just changed into his dark jeans, white shirt and leather jacket looking like a teenaged girl's fantasy, and opened the door to reveal Bethany, who was obviously smitten with his heartthrob look, sending him a flirty smile. She was standing at his door in a pink midriff, showing off her bellybutton piercing, and jeans, a bottle of vodka in her hand, "Ready to party, dear?" she asked with a smile on her lips.
Yes, he was definitely ready to party.
Asher could genuinely say that Bethany was his best friend. The guys who he hung out with were nice, but they were pretty much meat heads, and the girls cared more about their Facebook feeds than having an actual intellectual conversation. Bethany was the best of both worlds. She was smart, athletic and downright beautiful. Sometimes he wondered what the girl was doing dating Chad.
"Only if you promise to give me a dance by the end of the night?" Asher asked flirtatiously, motioning for her to come inside.
"If you want to have a punch up with Chad, be my guest, but I am sure that you will both end up with bruises on those pretty faces of yours."
"Not the face," Asher faked horrification.
Bethany laughed back. "I see I am early," she remarked looking around the empty house.
"Well it is almost eight, I'm sure that things will pick up."
And pick up they did. Only about two hours later and almost fifty people were at Asher's house, people were dancing on the table, making out on the couch, drinking in the yard. The beat of techno music thumped through the house and seemed to rebound off every wall.
Asher spent most of his time with his closest friends. They were at the dining table, drinks in their hands as they tried to talk over the music. Bethany sat on Chads lap and Leon sat next to Asher, the two of them talking about who they thought was going to get them lucky that night. Asher decided quickly that he needed to be much drunker than this. Usually he was alright with this, it was usually a week night and that meant that there was no expectation to go home with a girl, but this was different, this was his house on a Saturday, and the expectation was pretty much written out for him.
Leon got distracted by a pretty brunette and that allowed Asher to escape, he loved the guy, but there was only so much he could take. He didn't feel guilty or anything, he just wanted a break from talking about which girls were hotter. Eventually he discovered that Chad had set up a beer pong table while he had been in the other room, and just like most parties, the two jumped right in.
Like usual, it didn't take long for Chad to get the lead, even more so since Asher's aim was quite off due to the amount of beer he had already had before the game had started. Chad was the typical dark and handsome, and he had most of the girls eyes on him since the moment he walked in, that was until Bethany got close to him, keeping those hungry expressions of the other girls faces by making sure that everyone knew that he was hers. Bethany was nowhere to be seen during the game, and the girls around them were looking at both Asher and Chad like hunters in open season, yet if you asked Asher he would probably say that all the girls were looking at Chad.
The game ended and Chad walked around the table, giving Asher a pat on the back. "You did well dude, but I am the beer pong king."
"He isn't wrong." Suddenly Leon was standing next to them, a drink in his hand. "You and Chad play this game all the time and he always wins."
"Yeah, yeah, I'll beat you next time," Asher told him, his words slurring slightly at the edges.
"So," Leon handed Asher a drink, and he didn't even ask what it was before taking a sip, "do you see any cute girls you like? I know you usually date outside of school, but everyone knows that Maisy is quite smitten with you, although that probably has more to do with you being the captain of the team more than anything else, that girl is power hungry," Leon admitted, taking a large sip of his drink.
"Who cares? Reasons be damned, that girl likes you, go for it!" Chad told Asher.
Leon got distracted when someone asked him to play beer pong, and then it was just Asher and Chad. Chad pulled him over to the side. "Look, you know that I trust you, I mean you and my girl hang out all the time and I don't say shit, but it seems to me that you don't really want to get laid tonight, and.. this is hard to say.. do you like, I don't know, like Beth?"
Asher's eyes widened, he was not expecting that. He tried to ignore the way that Chad just casually implied that he dictated who Beth hung out with. "No, of course not, we are just friends."
Chad looked somewhat relieved, but it didn't seem to Asher that he really believed that in the first place. He was probably more wondering why someone who was so experienced as Asher seemed to be uninterested in one of the 'hottest' girls at the school.
"Okay good," Chad told him, "look, why don't you go out there and find Maisy and see what happens? I've heard stories of your weekends with college girls and I'm sure she has too. That girl looks like she's itching to get a piece of you."
"Who's itching to get a piece of Asher?" Bethany asked, coming to stand next to Chad who immediately pulled an arm around her.
"Maisy."
"You aren't wrong about that," Bethany admitted, "Now," she turned to her boyfriend, "are you still the reigning king of beer pong?"
"Of course, my Queen."
Asher could feel that little pit of jealousy pooling at the bottom of his stomach as he watched Bethany latch onto Chad, pressing their lips together and laughing as he swung her around in triumph at their continuous reign as King and Queen. Everyone around them smiled at the cute couple, well, everyone but those jealous girls.
Asher wanted that with someone. He wanted the entire room to watch him with someone and wish they were that person. He wanted to be a golden couple. He was already popular, but Chad had always been that little bit more popular.
The music pounded in his hears and he took a big gulp of the drink that was in his hand before moving into the living room which had turned into a makeshift dance floor. Boys in singlets and shorts were dancing with girls in tiny dresses and as he walked through the dance floor he was hi-fived by most people, others giving him sips of drinks or pats on the back. The attention was like a drug, and that mixed with the beer was what allowed him to stop in front of Maisy Stewart.
The girl was clearly tipsy, dancing off balance and smiling like an idiot when she saw Asher approaching her. Asher knew that Maisy had a crush on him, she always had, sending flirty texts and always sitting next to him in class. Not only that, but Maisy was the captain of the cheerleading team. The captain of the football team and the captain of the cheerleading team. That was sure to turn some heads.
If Asher thought about it – albeit not clearly due to the previous drinking – they were the perfect couple. Both blonde, beautiful, coveted by most at the school. They could run the school, they could overthrow Chad and Bethany in a heartbeat.
He danced with her, getting in close and slowly dragging his hands over her body. They danced for a while before she clasped his hand and dragged him over to the sofa, where she pushed him down and got on his lap, pressing her lips to his.
Asher felt a tug at the back of his mind, something that told him to stop this and leave now, but he couldn't, he was stuck in a drunken haze. Maisy's lips on his didn't feel right, but it felt like something, and he could almost feel the curious and jealous gazes of the other partygoers. Her lips were sloppy and lazy on his, and part of him wanted to pull away, but he didn't, instead he grabbed her neck and threaded his hands into the soft, blonde hair on her head.
The beat of the music felt like an extra heartbeat, bounding into his body and distracting rational thought. In the middle of the craziness Maisy pulled back from his lips and whispered, "Want to take this to your bedroom?"
That was the snap.
It was like a gun had gone off inside of his mind and the world around them stopped as Asher realised what he was doing. That was what caused Asher to break his hold on the girl, pushing her off of him and onto the sofa next to him, and it wasn't the words that shocked him, it was the memory. The sliver of a memory from that afternoon, of him and Danny snuggled up under a thick blanket on this exact same spot, of Asher telling Danny how much he would miss him, of Danny's gorgeous smile and it all came crashing down.
Asher leapt to his feet and pushed past all of the dancing people, ignoring the pats on the back and the drinks they tried to hand to him, and he ran to his room. He pulled open the door as fast as he could and slammed it behind him the second that he could. The music was drowned out just enough for him to hear his own thoughts and he slid down against the door, knees pulled up as he reached the carpet.
It was then that he felt, for the first time since this entire rouse had started up, guilt.
