Chapter 6-A: Things Are... Normal

Sapphire felt the comfort of the pillow lie underneath her, as she rested her head down, trying to take in the events from yesterday. Her mind had been exposed to the impossible, yet she lay there as if everything was alright. Scarlett had offered to drive around today and apply for jobs, seeing as how things have not been working out financially for her. Sapphire was hesitant at first, thinking that no one would want her, but then again, what are the odds?

The sunlight poured in from the morning sky, breathing inspiration into Sapphire. She slowly sat up, taking a look around the room. There stood a full length mirror in the corner of the room, and velvet on the floor. Above her floated a crystal chandelier that whispered the receipts of thousands of dollars. While Scarlett was the youngest, she definitely made it clear that she would not end up last.

It was a knock on the door that finally pursued Sapphire to remove herself from bed. "Come in!"

Scarlett walked in with a silver tray, topped off with a plate of French toast and eggs. "You will not do well on an empty stomach! Then, we can work on getting you dressed and ready for success."

"And what sort of success are you setting me up for, exactly?" Sapphire questioned, gratefully grabbing the tray of food. She had not eaten such a lovely meal in months.

Scarlett simply shrugged her shoulders, advancing towards the bed to fix it up. She grabbed ahold of the sheets and began spreading them out in the neatest manner ever. "I have connections."

With a mouthful of eggs, Sapphire merely nodded. "Alright, but do you know what sucks?"

"Close your mouth, Saph. I know that you know this, but I must remind you considering that today is your day!" Scarlett added with a charmed smile, twisting her lips so far upward that even the Grinch would have been jealous. "But out of interest, what does suck?"

"I never see you guys anymore!" Sapphire complained. She placed the tray down at the desk and sat beside it, barreling more food into her mouth. "I mean, sure, I see you once a week, but Selene is a stranger to me."

"Same here," Scarlett said, nodding her head wistfully. "I did not even know if I had her number anymore."

Sapphire let out a tiny laugh. "Honestly! Where is she now?"

"Off to work, of course. What else would she be doing?" Scarlett rolled her eyes, finishing off the bed by tossing some throw pillows atop the cover.

Sapphire let out a giggle. "Or seeing her boyfriend at the Grove."

"Are they even a thing?" Scarlett asked.

Sapphire rolled her eyes. "Who even knows?"

After a moment of silence built up between the girls, Sapphire let out another sigh. "I really wish we were all closer and living in a house together."

"You want us to grow up as the three, old sisters living together with our millions of cats?" Scarlett asked, letting out a howl of laughter.

Sapphire shook her head immediately. "No, things will not always be like that, but these last six months, I've just been really lonely. Sometimes I found myself wishing that we were all still together."

"Maybe we could all find apartments or homes close together," Scarlett suggested.

Sapphire nodded wistfully. "Wouldn't that be nice, though?"

"Do you want to talk about anything?" Scarlett asked, as she walked around the room, scanning to see if anything else needed to be put into order.

    "Concerning what?"

"I don't know, anything," Scarlett offered. "Maybe about job hunting, Nick, or whatever you need to talk about."

"I really miss him, Scar. I don't think you will ever know just how much, until it happens to you. Though I did rest easily last night knowing he died a hero." Sapphire felt the tears come forth in her eyes, which she tried to hide, but pacing around the room.

"He asked me if I wanted him to go into the military or not. He said he would find something else to do – store owner, President, anything, but I could see it in him. This is what he wanted to do, and I was not going to deny him that. It was his life and the lights that shined behind his eyes when he talked about fighting for our country, so how could I tell him no?" Sapphire stopped in the dead center of the room, feeling guilt crawl in her. "If only I had told him no."

"No, Saph, it's not your fault!" Scarlett insisted, shaking her head with tears rimming her eyes.

"I could have prevented. I had the choice," she argued.

"You did what was right. This is what he wanted. It was a risk that he wanted to take to better the lives of others because that is the kind of person he was. Quite honestly, even if you had said no, I don't think you could have stopped him," Scarlett shared nervously.

Sapphire just shook her head, not knowing what else to do. Life had never been this hard before. She grew up with two loving parents and her grandmother, playing with her two sisters. Then, they all slowly went off to college. Sapphire studied art and comics, met Nicholas at a coffee shop, and got married. Things were great.

But once he died, things slowly started to spiral out of control.

Their grandmother had gotten in a car accident and now resided in a nursing home, her mind completely gone. She could not remember a single thing from family to simple names of things. No matter what the doctors do, they never seem to be able to help her.

Their mother became overwhelmed with this news and moved away to Poland with their father, just to get away from it all, only leaving behind a note. Now the girls had no contact to anyone blood related, but each other.

Sapphire simply missed the way things used to be. "I want to go back in time."

"And do what?" Scarlett raised an eyebrow.

"Walk right past Nicholas. Then, maybe he would be alive. Maybe Grandma would be okay. Maybe Mom and Dad would be with us," Sapphire complained, running circles on the inside of her wrist.

Scarlett let out a tiny laugh. "We will be okay! Things are going to change now, starting with today. I'm going to end your apartment deal over there, and you are going to move in with me. I have the space, and I get lonely pretty easily. Then, we will find you a decent job."

Sapphire shook her head, refusing all of it. "I could never intrude."

"You are my sister, Sapphire. You could never be a bother," Scarlett said genuinely. The girls shared in a smile, bonding them together like they hadn't since they were in high school. "We are best friends for life."

"And what about Selene?"

"What about her?"

"Does she get included into any of this?"

"We can worry about her later — she isn't too keen to change things."

Sapphire nodded. "Things are okay, just like normal."

"Well, they will be!" Scarlett promised. If only they knew just what was still in store for them.
