Chapter Thirty Three
Seth's POV
"You want to work in our company?" There was a look of disbelief on dad's face. "A work? Are you telling me you want a job? Did I hear it right?" He pressed the intercom on top of his desk. "Catherine, can you come in here please?"
"Okay, sir." I heard a female's voice from the intercom. Not a moment later, a short plump middle aged women came into the room.
"Catherine, pwede bang pakinggan mo ang sinabi ng anak ko? Listen, carefully okay? Baka kasi nagkakamali lang ako ng pandinig." Dad said.
I grunted in annoyance. "Dad, you're overreacting."
"Say it again, hijo." He said.
"I want to work." I said in a low annoyed tone.
"Narinig mo yun, Catherine?! Narinig mo ang sabi ng anak ko?" Dad literally looked like he had won the lottery.
"Gusto niya daw magtrabaho, sir." Sabi ng babae. What? Did he just call someone to translate what I just said in tagalog? This was pathetic.
"Thank you, Catherine." He said dismissively and the woman left.
"Dad, what the hell?" I looked at him with brows wrinkled.
"Hijo, hindi lang ako makapaniwala. Ilang taon kong hinintay ang pagkakataong ito." He said.
"Jesus, I just want a job, dad! Stop acting like I cured cancer." I said in frustration.
"I'm sorry your old man just got a little excited." He apologized. "But I'm just curious. What made you suddenly want a job?"
It was because of Marian. I couldn't keep hosting at nightclubs. Walang makakasama si Marian sa gabi. What was the point of me moving into her house if I leave her by herself every night? Besides, I wasn't making a lot of money out of it. I just enjoyed partying and drinking and getting paid for it. I make enough for myself but now there's Marian and soon there'd be a baby. I needed a stable job.
"I'm done hosting. I want a real job." I shrugged.
"You don't know how happy I am right now, son. Finally! Your mother will lose her mind when she hears this." Dad said. "Ikaw ang magmamana nitong airline company. This will be all yours when I retire. This company has been waiting for you for so long."
Dad gave me an orientation. I had absolutely no clue about running an airline company. I'd given a lower position to get me started. I needed to learn the basics first before I could climb the corporate ladder. Dad said there'd be no special treatment for me. I had to do what all his employees do. I hadn't started my job yet but I already felt like a brainless sheep being herded... being told what to do, what to wear, where to go.
Apparently I had to wear suits. Yeah, the one with button down shirts, suit jackets and neck tie. This is the Philippines, a tropical country, where it's a thousand goddamn fahrenheit on an average day. Wearing suit should be banned here. Damn! I could die of heat stroke wearing those things outside. It would be more acceptable to wear barong.
I was now one of the sheeps being herded to the slaughter house. I never thought I'd be doing this. But i did...all because of Marian and the baby. It wasn't me anymore, it was us. My priorities had changed.
Marian's POV
I just up, stretching my arms as I yawned, when the door to the bathroom opened. He was Seth Timothy Fonacier like I'd never seen before.
"Saan ka pupunta?" Tanong ko sa kanya.
"I'm going to work." He said, stopping in front of the full length mirror I had in the corner of my room.
"Work?" Gulat na tanong ko. "May trabaho ka?"
"Yeah, I'm starting work today." He answered.
"Saan ka na nagtatrabaho?" I crawled to the edge of the bed and sat there.
"At my family's company."
I asked.
"I can't keep doing that for the rest of my life. Besides, nakakasawa na din ang magparty. Right now I want to try to corporate world."
"Really? Totoo ba 'to? Nanaginip lang yata ako." I said. He used to tell me how he'd hate to have a 9-to-5 life and how he'd never be caught dead working at an office. He wanted a laid-back and carefree lifestyle, no stress life with no responsibilities.
He looked really hot in that suit, so powerful and broodingly handsome. His sleek and cleanly pushed back hair suited his aristocratic features. My raging hormones were battling with my entrenched morality again.
"Marian, do you know how do this?" He asked, as he frustratedly tried to tie his necktie.
"Hindi ako marunong." Sabi ko. "Pero pwede kong isearch sa internet. Wait lang."
I took out my phone and looked it up in the internet. Pagkatapos ay lumapit ako sa kanya at sinubukan iyon. I could smell his aftershave and cologne as I was tying his necktie. He smelled delicious.
"Bakit hindi mo man lang sinabi sa akin an may trabaho ka na?" I asked as I was straightening his tie with my finger.
"I just got the job yesterday. Tulog ka na ng dumating ako kagabi." He said.
"Good luck on your first day." I smiled, tugging at his tie.
One corner of his lips lifted in a cocky grin. "Are you going to miss me?"
"OA mo naman! Bakit hindi ka na ba babalik dito?" My brow shot up.
"Babalik." His grin grew bigger. "Pwede ko ba naman kayong iwan?"
I tried to hide my smile. "Teka, nagbreakfast ka na ba?"
He lifted his arm and pulled his sleeve up to look at his wrist watch. "I'm going to be late for work."
"Kahit magcoffee ka lang."
"I know you can't stand the smell of coffee." He said. "Don't worry about me. I'll just grab something to eat when I get to work."
"Magbreakfast ka ha." Sabi ko sa kanya.
"Ikaw din. Don't starve the little champ." He said.
"The little champ won't starve... Itong pang anak m-ko..." My tongue almost betrayed me. I almost said it. I felt like my heart just dropped. Do you know the feeling when you miss a step on the stairs and you feel like you're going to have a heart attack? That was how I felt. "Alam mo naman itong anak ko kapag hindi ko pinakain nangungulit." I chuckled to quickly cover up my tenseness. At fifteen weeks, I could already feel some subtle movements in me. Especially when I don't eat on time or I get hungry.
His gaze dropped to my protuding stomach. "Be a good kid while I'm gone, okay?"
"Para naman maririnig ka niyan." I rolled my eyes smiling.
"A baby can hear a voice as early as 14 weeks." He said.
"Really?" I asked, amused.
"Mhmm. That's why we have to be careful with what we say. Naririnig niya na tayo." Sabi ni Seth. "Oo nga pala hindi ba next week may appointment tayo sa doktor?"
"Yes. If we're lucky, baka daw makita na natin ang gender ng baby." I excitedly said.
"Let's not spoil it. Gusto kong malaman ang gender ng baby kapag napanganak na." He said.
"Pero gusto ko ng malaman." I pouted.
"Don't you think it would be good if we keep a little suspense?"
"Mas maganda kung malaman na natin ngayon. Hindi na ako mahihirapan bumili ng mga gamit ng baby at saka nagpaplano na sina Rose ng baby shower. Excited na din silang malaman ang gender ng baby." Sabi ko.
"Let's talk about it when I get home. I don't want to be late on my first day. Dad might fire me." Natatawang sabi niya.
"Bye." I smiled.
"Bye." He lifted his hand up, gently tucking a few strands of stray hair behind my ear. And then he stroked my cheek. His touch sent a combination of tickles and chill through my body. His face lowered to mine and my breath caught as I wondered if he was going to kiss me.
He kissed me... on the cheek. And then he turned and walked away. He left me wanting for more. I miss the taste of his lips against mine, the feel of it, the heat of his breath.
Sometimes I feel like we were just playing house. Everything was just make believe. Nothing was real.
