The Demented Attack

To say it had been the worst summer for Harry and I was to put it very lightly. Nightmares had haunted the both of us. Our memories, making us relive the darkest moments of last year. The rising of Voldemort, and our classmate and friend Cedric Diggory's death. Today was the hottest day of the summer by far. Harry and I were miserable having to only be around each other.

That's not to say we didn't love each other, because we did, very much. It's just that when you're the only people in the world that you can talk to, specially as we were now finding our independence as teenagers, being 15 years old now. You, sort of, get short with each other, rather quickly I might add. Though, things certainly felt different for us. When Harry would get mad, I would. If I got mad, he would. It was like we fed off each other, making things escalate much more than they needed to. Our connection had always been rather strange and strong, but now it felt like it was trying to rip us apart. We always tried to make sure to apologize whenever we realized we were in the wrong.

On top all that, we hadn't received a single letter from our friends. We hadn't had a single scrap of news all summer about what was happening in the wizarding world. We felt alone, and in the dark. I was especially angry at Ronald Weasley. He's certainly not the most reliable when it comes to writing letter's, but I hadn't received a single one. He kissed me at the barrier of platforms 9 and 10 last year. Promising to write. I hoped, maybe, we could finally figure out where this was going. But I got nothing.

Being that it was the hottest day, Harry and I hated being cooped up inside. Plus it made us both a bit more irritable with each other. So we had decided to go for a walk, enjoy the fresh hot air. We took our wands just in case, you never know I suppose, when Voldemort could be lurking around the corner. On our walk it took us down Magnolia Crescent, as usual, to the small park. It was usually filled with children laughing and playing happily. But because the sun burned so hot today, hardly anyone was out. And the park was empty.

Harry wore his jeans, sneakers and a blue tee shirt. A fresh hair cut that he had actually let me give him. I wore a simple short sleeve sundress, with a pair of capri leggings underneath since Aunt Petunia had thrown a fit. And my sneakers as well. We both sat on the swings in silence, simply enjoying each other the best way we knew how, as of right now. Silently. The park did start to fill with laughter, but it wasn't the enjoyable kind. Dudley and his gang of friends came barreling over, joyfully laughing about some kid.

"Hey, D." I called out to him as he stared at Harry and I. "Have fun beating up another 10 year old?" I asked sarcastically.

"This one deserved it." Dudley sneered.

"Yeah." His four friends agreed behind him. I tried to ignore the stares as they looked me up and down hungrily.

"Five against one. Very brave." Harry retorted.

"Well, you're one to talk." Dudley shot back. "Moaning in your sleep every night. At least I'm not afraid of my pillow." Dudley and his friends laughed. "Don't kill, Cedric! Who's Cedric, your boyfriend?"

"Shove a cork in it, Dudley." I growled.

"You think you don't, as well?" Dudley scoffed. "He's going to kill us, Mum! Where is your Mum? Where is your Mum, Potter? She dead? Is she dead?" Dudley said smugly, making his friends crack with laughter.

"Whoa!" His friends called out.

Harry and I both knew he had crossed a line, talking about our mother like that. The both of us got up as if our legs moved of their own free will. I felt like I was seeing straight red. My hand reached for my wand hidden in my pocket and I held it against his throat. I hadn't even noticed Harry had done the same thing next to me. Our actions only made Dudley's friends laugh even harder as if were were pointing mere sticks at him. Dudley, however, gulped in fear.

The wind started to pick up as Harry and I seethed in anger, the sky turned nearly black as quickly as one could blink. That broke my pure hatred in an instant and I looked into the sky. The darker it got, Dudley's friends quit laughing and looked around at the strange weather.

"Dudley. Dudley, let's go on home." His friends all chimed together.

"What are you two doing?" Dudley whispered to us both, our wands still at his neck.

"I'm not doing this... Are you?" Harry and I said in unison looking at each other. We both shook our heads no. Dudley's friend's ran for it, leaving him behind.

"Dudley, we need to leave. Now." I stated urgently having the most terrible feeling.

This was not muggle-like weather. It was clearly of the magic sort, seeing how quickly it came on. Harry, Dudley and I ran down the path that would lead us home. Thunder rumbled through the sky and rain began pelting down on us. We were soaked within a few seconds of the rain, in the still, sickly hot air. We detoured down from the path into a tunnel to wait out the rain. We all stopped and took a moment to catch our breaths. But, the air quickly changed. The lights in the tunnel began to flicker and freeze over with thick frost. The air dropped in temperature quickly, making our breaths come out as puffs of smoke. Harry and I only needed to look at each other to know exactly what was happening.

Harry cried out as he turned around. A Dementor was right behind him, grabbing his throat and quickly pinning him to the wall. He grunted and groaned and I gasped seeing the horrible creature, which shouldn't have been anywhere near here.

"Dudley, run!" I pushed on his arm and made him move. He was frozen seeing Harry just hovering in the air, pinned, as Muggles can't see dementors. I smacked his arm harder. "Go! Now!" I shouted.

Finally listening, Dudley ran for it towards the other end of the tunnel, slipping on a bit of ice that had been created by a puddle and the freezing air. His body slid towards the exit and another Dementor swooped and began to suck the air from him. I was hoping Dudley would have made it but he hadn't and I didn't have a choice. I pulled out my wand and aimed at the dementor attacking my brother, sucking the air from him.

"Expecto Patronum!" I shouted, thinking of my kiss with Ron, being the happiest memory at the moment.

White light burst forth from my wand and blasted the Dementor away from Harry. He fell to the ground, gasping for breath, and quickly picked up his wand that had fallen from his pocket. He stood quickly and faced Dudley.

"Expecto Patronum!" Harry shouted.

I swung around and flung my white light along with Harry's that burst forth from his wand. The lights smacked the dementor and forced it out of the tunnel and away from us. Harry and I ran forward and kneeled beside our cousin, checking on. He was trembling and whimpering, his face a sickly looking gray. Before Harry and I could say anymore, the sound of squeaking wheels made us both turn around. I quickly hid my wand behind my back, as did Harry, trying to shove them back into our pockets. The person walking towards us was a bit of a surprise.

"Mrs. Figg." Harry said surprised.

The lady who had watched us most of our lives walked down the tunnel with her little cart being pulled behind her. She wore a raincoat and head covering.

"Don't put away your wands, Harry and Olivia. They might come back." She said simply.

Harry and I both looked at her with confused looks and left our wands out in our hands. We quickly bent over and helped our rather large cousin off the ground, baring his weight on our shoulders, carrying him home. Mrs. Figg walked beside us with her small cart, talking to us about the attack.

"Dementors in Little Whinging? Whatever next ." She scoffed. "The whole world's gone topsy-turvy."

"But, h-how do you know about... You know? Have you always known?" I asked her curiously with a small grunt as I helped Harry drag Dudley along.

"Dumbledore asked me to keep an eye on you two." Mrs. Figg explained.

"Dumbledore?" Harry stated confused. "You know, Dumbledore?"

"Uh-huh. After You-Know-Who killed that poor Diggory boy last year. Did you expect him to let you both go wandering around on your own? Good lord, boy, they told me you were intelligent. Now, get inside and stay there, I expect someone will be in touch soon." She leaned in to whisper. "Whatever happens, don't leave the house."

She gave us a little shove forward and we continued to drag Dudley along inside. Aunt Petunia was on the couch, using a small hand held fan to cool off with. She heard the front door close and called out.

"Diddykins! Is that you?" She asked. Harry and I opened the living room doorway and shuffled through one at a time, trying to keep ahold of Dudley. Aunt Petunia looked at us and then her son horrified. "Duddy? Vernon! Come quick!"

Uncle Vernon was in the kitchen helping himself to the ice box which contained ice cream, eating it with the door open to help him to try and cool down. He rushed over with the spoon in hand, Harry and I helped Dudley to a chair and sat over by the back door on a couple of stools. Dudley and his parents fussed over in the corner, giving Dudley a bucket as he still looked sickly gray.

"You have to take him to a hospital." Aunt Petunia whispered as she stroked Dudley's head.

"Who did this to you, boy?" Uncle Vernon asked. Dudley raised his hand slowly and pointed over at us. "Happy, are we now? Eh? You've finally done it. You finally driven him loopy!" He scolded us.

"Vernon!" Aunt Petunia hissed in a whisper. "Don't say that!"

"Well, j-just look at him, Petunia!" Uncle Vernon exclaimed. "Our boy is gone yumpy! I've reached my limit, do you hear?" Uncle Vernon wagged the spoon as he scolded us. "This is the last I'm gonna take of you two and your nonsense!"

An owl flew in through the open back door and hit the ceiling, falling back down to the ground. The letter it was carrying in it's beak had landed on the couch and floated back up in the air. Uncle Vernon backed away whimpering in fear. The back side of the envelope faced towards us, a face appeared in the paper and then the owl flew away.

"Dear, Mr. and Miss Potter. The Ministry has received intelligence that at 6:23 this evening, you both performed the Patronus Charm in the presence of a Muggle. As a clear violation of the decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery, you are herby expelled from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hoping you are well, Mafalda Hopkirk."

Harry and I had gasped, with wide eyes as the notice said we were expelled. I thought all the air from my lungs had been taking from me. This was wrong, it had to be wrong. The letter which had gotten much closer as it spoke, dropped to the ground in front of us. I grabbed the letter and opened it. Sure enough, the inside said the same thing.

"Justice." Uncle Vernon growled happily.

After he and Aunt Petunia left with Dudley to get him to the hospital, Harry and I went up to our room. Harry hit the wall in anger beside our bureau, making Hedwig and Arwen squawk. I kicked the leg of my bed, but that wasn't good enough.

"Sorry Hedwig, Arwen." Harry apologized for frightening our birds. The both chirped back as though to say it was all right.

I felt the tears of anger start to roll down my face. It was completely unfair. I looked at our desk that was filled with letter's we hadn't sent, my books that i'd been reading. Hogwarts school things. Seeing it all made me feel even worse. I picked up my book and chucked it across the room. I grunted angrily and began throwing things from the desk across the room, swiping my arms across the desk and clearing it. A crash of glass hit the floor and Harry ran over, wrapping his arms around mine and restrained me. I fought against him as hard as I could, but the tears flowed more.

"Get off me!" I screamed angrily. "Leave me alone, Harry! I swear to Merlin I'll jinx you! No point in not using magic now that we're expelled." I said though my sobs. My voice became quieter the longer I spoke, and filled with more sobs.

"Shh, Liv, it's all right. It's all going to be okay." Harry said trying to assure me gently.

"I-It's not, Harry! Don't you understand?! Any minute now someone's going to come knocking. They're going to take our wands and destroy them! That's what happens when you get expelled!" I cried out. My fighting against him lessened and we sat on his bed. I cried in his arms and he just held me. I felt a few tears of his own slip out onto my head, but neither of us said another word.

As I calmed down, I sniffled and turned away from Harry. The picture of our Mum and Dad had fallen to the floor. Luckily it didn't appear broken, just the glass had vibrated in it's frame. I held the picture in my hands and watched my parents dance happily. I touched it with my fingers and sighed, placing it back on the desk. I hated that I felt this way, that I let myself get so angry all the time. And after getting angry I always felt worse.

"I-I'm sorry, Harry." I said quietly.

"I'm sorry too, Liv." Harry sighed. "Let's lock the door and try to get some sleep. Maybe that will help." He suggested and I nodded to agree.

After tossing and turning for what felt like hours, I finally fell asleep. I hoped and prayed for a dreamless sleep, but I was not granted my wish. That night played over in my head. Cedric's eye's on us and suddenly he was blasted with green light. His body flipped through the air and landed on the grounds till. Harry and I's screams echoed in my head. Voldemort returning and glaring menacingly at us. I woke up suddenly and sat up rubbing my eyes.

A clatter came from downstairs and I perked up even more. Harry was tossing in his sleep, clearly dreaming as well. I hopped off my bed and went over towards him, shaking his shoulder.

"Harry." I whispered.

He woke easily and looked at me. I handed him his glasses and put my finger over my mouth. We both stayed still for a moment listening. Footsteps, many footsteps, creaked up the stairs. We knew they weren't our Aunt and Uncle. So we both stood up and aimed our wands at the door, ready to take on whatever attack might be coming for us. We watched and waited as the key in our door turned easily and fell to the ground. A blast of light blinded us both and we breathed heavily.

When I opened my eyes after hearing Arwen and Hedwig chirp. There were several people standing in Harry and I's bedroom doorway that I never expected to see at our house. Mostly because I couldn't see them at first, just their silhouettes. But when one spoke, we recognized it immediately. Professor Moody.
