Flight of The Fat Lady
"Honestly. I'm fine." I groaned.
"Liv, you woke up screaming this morning. You are not fine." Hermione huffed.
"Again?" Harry asked concerned.
"Liv, maybe you should go to Madam Pomfrey." Ron suggested. "I'm sure there's something she could whip up for you."
"It was just one dream. The same one. A flash of green and a woman screaming. I can never see the rest of it." I mumbled to myself. "But really, I'm fine. I'm not going to Madam Pomfrey either. I'll figure it out myself." I huffed and walked away from the table.
"Why is she being so stubborn lately?" Ron asked concerned as he watched her go.
"I think she's stressed." Hermione said worriedly.
"I tried to go see her the other day. See, if I could help in anyway, whether it was to talk. Homework. But she actually yelled at me. Olivia never yells at me." Harry sighed. "Have you seen her piles of homework? They're gigantic. I honestly think she's pushing herself to hard. Plus, worrying about being attacked by Sirius Black. Dementor's crawling the grounds. I wish there was a way to help her get over her fear..."
"Harry! That's brilliant. Our Hogsmeade trip is coming up. I know your going to see if Professor McGonagall will sign them, and as I've said. I don't believe she will." Hermione scolded him for a quick moment. "If she doesn't, take her to see Professor Lupin. I'd bet you anything he'd be willing to help her." She smiled brightly.
"That's brilliant, Hermione." Ron agreed.
"Thanks for the confidence." Harry rolled his eyes. "But yes, I'll take her to see, Professor Lupin."
The first Hogsmeade trip was today. It was finally Halloween and everyone was rearing with excitement, ready to go. I, however, didn't particularly want to leave the castle. Harry had tried to assure me that we'd be fine. That he wanted to ask McGonagall to sign our forms. I tried to assure him that his plan wasn't going to work. But he dragged me along anyways after making my mouth water with the thought of getting to Honeydukes for chocolate. Everyone was gathered in the Courtyard near the bell tower.
"Now, remember, these visits to Hogsmeade Village are a privilege." McGonagall stood above the group of students, while Filch was collecting permission forms. She was informing them all of the rules. "Should your behavior reflect poorly on the school in anyway, that privilege shall not be extended again." Harry and I walked up to her with the form in hand. "No permission form signed, no visiting the village. That's the rule, Potter."
"All those with permission, follow me. Those without..." Filch glared at Harry and I. "Stay put."
McGonagall started to walk with the students but Harry jumped in front of her.
"But Professor, I thought if you signed it then we could go."
"I can't. Only a parent or guardian can sign. Since I am neither, it would be inappropriate." She replied to him quickly. Harry looked down to the ground defeated and I rubbed his arm. "I'm sorry, Potter's. That's my final word." She said softly and turned to leave with everyone else.
"Forget about it guys." Harry said. I looked up to see Hermione and Ron were waiting for us with solemn looks. "We'll see you later."
"I'm sorry she said no, Harry." I said sympathetically.
"It's all right." Harry said after a deep breath. "Come on. We have somewhere to be."
"What where?" I asked as I followed him.
"You'll see."
We stopped in front of the DADA classroom and Harry asked Professor Lupin if he didn't mind coming for a walk with us. We walked along a bridge outside of the castle in silence. I had a few questions of my own that I wanted to ask. But Harry spoke up first. While we stopped walking and faced the view before us.
"Professor, can I ask you something? It's about, Liv."
"You want to know why I stopped your sister from facing that Boggart, yes?" Lupin gave him a knowing look and Harry nodded. I perked up at the question, knowing I was curious. "I would have thought it'd be obvious. I assumed it would take the shape of Lord Voldemort." He said much easier than others. Harry and i glanced at each other rather surprised to hear someone say his name as easily as we did. The only person we'd ever heard speak it was Dumbledore.
"Well, I did think of Voldemort at first." I said sheepishly. "But then I remembered that night on the train... The Dementor."
"You know, Olivia." Harry said. "I did too. As soon as I watched you walk up to the Boggart I felt the same way. Voldemort was my first thought and then the Dementors." I looked at Harry as he spoke, a bit surprised. He hadn't seemed all that phased by them. I felt a bit better knowing I wasn't alone.
"Well, I'm very impressed by the both of you." Professor Lupin observed. "That suggests that what you both fear the most is fear itself. This is very wise."
"Professor, before Harry and I fainted. We spoke to each other about hearing something. It was a woman screaming... I've been dreaming about it since..."
"Well, Dementors force us to relive our very worst memories. Our pain becomes their power. I'm not surprised it's been haunting you, Olivia. Bringing you night terrors and panic attacks." Lupin explained softly.
"I've watched my dream a hundred times at least. I-I think it was our mother, the night she was murdered trying to protect us." I admitted. Harry looked over at me and nodded.
"I've had the dream too." Harry confirmed.
"You know, the very first time I saw you two, Olivia an Harry. I recognized you both immediately. But, not by your scars. By your looks and your eyes. Olivia, you look remarkably like your mother Lily and Harry, you have her eyes." Lupin admitted. Harry and I looked up at him throughly surprised. We'd never met anyone who'd known our parents in such an intimate way before. "Yes. Oh, yes. I knew her. Lily was there for me at a time when no one else was. Not only was she a singularly gifted witch, she was also an uncommonly kind woman. She had a way of seeing the beauty in others. Even, at perhaps most especially, when that person could not see it in themselves." He whispered.
Harry and I were grinning ear to ear hearing something so personal about one of our parents. It was perhaps the closet we'd ever felt to them.
"I have been told you've rather inherited her intelligence and kindness, Olivia. She was quite the book worm too. Well, your father, James, on the other hand." Lupin chuckled. "Uh, He had a certain, shall we say, talent for trouble. A talent, rumor has it... he passed on to the both of you. Especially you, Harry." Lupin grinned at us both. "And you, my dear little one. Have his eyes. While Harry, you might as well be his carbon copy. You're both more like them then you know. In time, you'll both come to see just how much."
"It's nice to know about them. Mum and Dad. No one's ever been able to tell us much before." I smiled as we headed back into the castle.
"Well, as I said before, little one. Anytime you need to have a chat or perhaps would like to hear some stories about your parents. I'd be willing to share." Lupin smiled at the thought.
"Definitely." Harry grinned.
"I do have one more question before Harry and I leave you, Professor."
"Hmm?"
"Why... Why do you keep calling me, little one?" I asked curiously.
"Ah, well you see. When you and Harry were born. You were probably the very first baby I ever held. Your mother insisted even though I was much to nervous. Rather afraid I'd hurt you, drop you, or spook you. All that nonsense." He chuckled. "But stubborn she was, and she placed you in my arms. You took an instant liking to me and since you were so tiny. I had begun calling you little one. Which apparently has stuck."
"Wow." Harry and I awed at the story.
"Did I have a nickname?" Harry asked curiously. Lupin let the biggest grin come across his face. He nodded.
"You did. Your father started it. You both were such gorgeous babies. Your father thought you were the most handsome boy he'd ever seen, besides himself." Lupin chuckled. "He used to call you his Little Stag. A sort of family inside joke that maybe I'll tell you about one day."
Harry and I separated from Professor Lupin on that note and we left heading back towards the common room. Nothing could have wiped the smiles off our faces.
"Do you feel better now?" Harry asked suddenly.
"I do. Thanks for that, Harry. And I'm sorry for being so snappy lately. I know you're just trying to help."
"Hey, that's what brothers are for. To tease and pick on their sisters. And to watch out and protect them." Harry smiled. I reached out and grabbed his hand giving it a squeeze. "Twins to the end of the line."
"Twins to the end of the line." I repeated happily. Students flood the halls, seeing as everyone must be coming back from Hogsmeade. "Look, there's Ron and Hermione." I pointed out and we ran to them.
"Hey." Hermione greeted and I jumped on her. She gasped in surprised and wrapped her arms around me. "What's going on?" She chuckled.
"I'm so sorry for being the world's worst best friend. Being a giant jerk. I know you all were just trying to help me. I'm so sorry." I apologized sincerely.
"It's fine. None of us were mad, we just wanted to make sure you were okay. I see talking with Professor Lupin helped?" Hermione asked.
"It did." Harry and I answered her together.
"Ron." I said sheepishly. He only grinned at me and held out his arms. I grinned back at him and jumped into his arms without hesitation.
"No apology necessary, sunshine." Ron grinned as he looked down at me. "Come on, let's get back to the common room. We've got loads to tell you, just like I'm sure you do for us."
The four of us walked towards the common room with the other Gryffindor's. Harry and I explained everything he had told us while on our walk. They were nearly as fascinated as we were. They started to tell us about their trips to Hogsmeade. Ron had repeated himself a few times in all his excitement. Surprisingly he seemed to stick rather close to me on the stairs. I wasn't sure why, but I sort of like it.
"Honeyduke's Sweet Shop is brilliant. But nothing beats Zonko's Joke Shop. We never did get a chance to go to the Shrieking Shack, though. You heard that it's the...."
"Most haunted building in Britain. We know, we heard." Harry reminded him.
"What's going on?" I asked as we came to a stop on the moving stairs just before the common room entrance. We could hear plenty of students murmuring in front of the painting.
"Probably Neville's forgotten the password again." Ron said annoyed.
"Hey!" Neville spoke up from behind me. We all turned surprised to see him there.
"Oh! You're there." Ron tried to not laugh and I playfully smacked his arm. The stairs finally connected to the top
"Uh, let me through, please." Percy Weasley came trudging down the other set of connecting stairs. "Excuse me, I'm Headboy!" Percy pushed through and finally made it to the Fat Lady painting. "Get back all of you. No one is to enter this dormitory until it has been fully searched."
Ginny came rushing down the stairs to the four of us as we looked at her questionably.
"The Fat Lady! She's gone!"
Students had cleared the way and we could see the painting. It had been slashed all over, down to the wood. Leaving bits of the painting's canvas hanging on by threads. Hermione and I gasped, while Harry and Ron stared in disbelief. Paintings all around us, talked and worried. The entire stairwell became very loud with chatter.
"Serves her right. She was a terrible singer." Ron joked.
"It's not funny, Ron." I scolded him.
"Keep calm everyone." Percy shouted over all the chatter. "All right, be quiet!"
"Make way!" Mr. Filch shouted. He and Dumbledore came quickly down the stairs pushing through students to get to the door.
"The headmaster's here!" Percy announced.
"Come on, move!" Dumbledore shouted.
"You heard! Move!"
Harry, Hermione, Ron and I pushed our way to the top of the stairs, standing just behind Dumbledore and Mr. Filch. He gazed at the painting gently touching the ripped pieces. Mr. Filch looked around in the air for something.
"Mr. Filch? Round up the ghosts. Tell them to search every painting in the castle to find the Fat Lady." Dumbledore requested.
"There's no need for ghosts, Professor." Filch stated as he stared into the air at a single painting a few floors above us. "The Fat Lady's there." His hand raised in the air pointing.
Everyone gasped and we all rushed to get up the stairs. Students were pushing and shoving each other just to have a look.
"Hey! Mind where you're going! Slow down! You listen, I'm Headboy!" Percy shouted, but no one seemed to pay him any mind.
"Keep moving." Dumbledore said to a few students.
"Make way! Make way! Go, go, go!" Mr. Filch shouted.
We all approached a painting that was of a safari. Inside the painting hiding behind a hippopotamus was the Fat Lady herself.
"Dear Lady, who did this to you?" Dumbledore asked her concerned. She peeked her head up over the hippo, she was shaking in fear and whimpering.
"Eyes like the devil, he's got. And a soul as dark as his name. It's him, Headmaster. The one they all talk about. He's here, somewhere in the castle! Sirius Black!" She quivered in fear and ducked back behind the hippo.
"Sirius Black!?" The students of Hogwarts murmured.
I felt around his arm until my hand reached and grasped Harry's hand and held it tightly. Apparently we aren't as safe as everyone thought. So much for such a good day.
"Secure the Castle, Mr. Filch." Dumbledore instructed before turning and shouting. "The rest of you, to the Great Hall."
I could feel Hermione and Ron's eye's on Harry and I as we stared at the Fat Lady painting. We were all now extremely concerned. We, along with the rest of the students filed into the Great Hall. We were all given sleeping bags and pillows, and made to chose a portion of the room to sleep in. Harry, Ron, Hermione and I chose a corner of the room a bit away from the other Gryffindor's. Percy being as strict and bossy as ever forced lights out early upon us all.
Students were murmuring about how Black could have possibly gotten in, much to the annoyance of Hermione and myself. Being the only people apparently who read. The castle was locked up good and tight and we all laid to rest for the night. Harry and I were probably the only two students awake. Our bags pushed closely together, we laid there just looking at one another in the moonlight. The Great Hall doors creaked open and we both immediately shut our eyes.
"I've searched the Astronomy Tower and the Owlery, sir." Mr. Filch said as he, Dumbledore, Snape and Flitwick walked up the aisle. "But there's nothing there."
"Ah, thank you." Dumbledore whispered.
"Yes, the third floor's clear, too, sir." Professor Flitwick informed him.
"Very good."
"And I've done the dungeons, Headmaster. No sign of Black, nor anywhere else in the castle." Snape relayed.
"I didn't really expect him to linger." Dumbledore said. Flitwick and Filch left the Great Hall while Dumbledore and Snape walked even closer towards our are.
"Remarkable feat, don't you think? To enter Hogwarts Castle on one's own, completely undetected." Snape asked of Dumbledore.
"Quite remarkable, yes." He whispered.
"Any theories on how he might have managed it?" Snape pried curiously.
"Many. Each is as unlikely as the next."
"You may recall, prior to the start of term, I did express concerns about your appointment of Professor Lupin..."
"Not a single Professor inside this Castle would help Sirius Black to enter it." Dumbledore expressed sternly. "No, I'm quite convinced the Castle is safe and I'm more than willing to send the students back to their houses."
"What about the Potter Twins? Should they be warned?" Professor Snape asked. I did my best to keep my eyes lightly closed and look like I was sleeping, as did Harry. Soft footsteps approached until they were standing just in front of us.
"Perhaps. But for now, let them sleep. For in dreams, we enter a world that's entirely our own. Let them swim in the deepest ocean. Or glide over the highest cloud."
