CHAPTER TWO

         Dedicated to nicolemaisey
Day 00
        At first there was calm.
There were no birds chirping. No sound. Nothing.
What the time was? She had no idea. Where she was? On the ground. That was all she could make out. Everything else was plain suffocating darkness.

         And she hated darkness.

Her father knew this. He would lock her up in a cupboard for an hour every night to help her get over her fear. She hated it.
         She hated him.
And just when she told him she did, he disappeared and was proclaimed dead two days after.

         She hated herself more.

Kai waited for the familiar pang of guilt. And it came. Like the expression on her father's face, the hurt. It washed over her like ice and she couldn't cry- the tears were frozen within. So she laid there, numb, unable to move.
Whatever happens.
Whatever happens.

August 30, 2010
                 "Daddy, I agree with Pumbaa."
Rapid feet alerted him and quickly he closed the laptop and turned to face her. Her hair pulled in a bun as she scurried towards him, dragging a stuffed warthog. He grinned, picked her up and placed her on his lap.
"On what exactly Honey?" he murmured as he stroked her hair. Blonde and soft.
"The stars daddy. Pumbaa says they're balls of gas and I agree with him." she smiled up at him, two teeth missing, her electric blue eyes filled with so much life.
"Well" he shifted slightly adjusting to the pressure on his thigh. "We could say that."
She tilted her head in confusion. "Why do you say that daddy?" her pale pink lips pulled slightly to the side.
"Honey, I think the stars can be whatever we want them to be. The scientist think they're balls of gas though, but your mother thinks they're dead relatives."
She seemed to mull over it for a while.
"What about you daddy? What do you think the stars are?"
        He gave a short chuckle.
"I don't really think about the stars Kairos."
       "Why?"
"Maybe because I don't see them as important."
"Oh." she paused for a while biting her lip. "Well I think they must be pretty important if they're up there every night."
He stared at her for a while then smiled.
"You can think whatever you want to Kairos. Whatever you want to."
******************************
The world was white skin and silver orbs when she opened her eyes. Her body felt heavy and her throat cried for water. Lips chapped in need.
Huge silver orbs stared in excitement then recedded and was replaced by the owner's full body. A girl-or what supposedly looked like a girl. Her hair, short and the color of her skin. Her body was a definite figure one, all kind of curves absent. And just like pink sweater, she had three lines tattooed on her right cheek.
"Las!" The pale girl cheered. "You wake! I must tell father!" her voice felt like it floated. Like air.
Kairos made to speak, but nothing came out.
And here she thought it was all a dream. That somehow, she'd be back on her bed at home, beside her mother.
The pale girl had scrammed out of the room. Kai's eyes, the only organ she could move yet, quickly surveyed the area. Grey everywhere. The ceiling above was arched like an igloo, square cut patterns were on the walls and a few funny looking devices hung on them. A rectanglar tank stood at the farther end, half empty. Two openings in the wall next to her, probably windows, allowed light in.
Must be evening. She thought. The light wasn't as bright as other evenings she knew anyways.
The pale girl returned with a tall lean man who's bald head gleamed in the light. The whiteness of their skin sending creeps up her spine.
"She wakes Father!" she stated again, her voice still felt like air but the excitement was clear.
"I see that Mora. I see that." he replied, eyes trained on Kai as he stalked towards her.
Apprehension clenched in her stomach but she could do nothing. He knelt before her, his eyes wide with childlike curiosity, studying her.
"Shall we ask who she be Father? Shall we?" the girl, Mora, was practically skipping now and Kai could relate to the annoyed look on her father's face.
"Leave this to me Mora." he warned. "Who are you?"
Kairos took deep breaths, forced her lips to part and the words out. Nothing came. Her mouth felt like dry cardboard instead.

          Water.

"Who are you?" Pale man asked again, his face pulled into a slight frown.
             Kai grasped for deeper breaths now, her chest heaving so much it slightly hurt, but all she could make out was what she needed so bad;
             "W... Water."
What idiots do not know the first thing you give an unconscious person is water?

"Hmm, funny name. We drink water in the Domus. Shall we drink you too?" he gave a grin while his daughter burst into laughter.
Kai would've laughed too if she she wasn't freaked out. They had no teeth. No. Their mouth looked like an 'O' leading into some dark tunnels- more like a leaf blower sucking in air. Panic swelled within her. These weren't humans. Humans had teeth. Humans didn't have skin as white as dead. Humans didn't have huge silver orbs, looking like partial aliens. Humans wouldn't drink fellow humans-except the crazy ones.
Maybe these were the crazy ones. Or mutants.
Where was pink sweater? Where had he gone? Perhaps these were his family and he'd brought her as dinner.
Fear clawed and poked at her chest,  hammering on her ribs. She struggled to move or even yell something! Anything to stall them. Anything! But all she could do was cry. Tears slid down her cheeks as her brain conjured up worst case scenarios.
"We know your name is not water. Mora's mother would not even allow me name her 'Phot'" he grinned again but it only worried Kai more. The absence of teeth made him look like a stressed vacuum.
She needed to get herself together. She needed to focus, think.
              Think.
"Who are you?!" his voice had risen slightly, the lack of popping veins even made him look more eerie.
"Kai...." she forced out. "My name... Kai."
Mora's eyes gleamed in excitement then.
"Kai? Such name is strange.  Isn't it father?"
"Doesn't matter now Mora. We have to find out where she's from. Like we know, does not look a tad like any of we."
Kai closed her eyes tiredly. If she wanted to do anything, she needed to drink water first. Something to at least get her on her feet and rid her of the burning thirst.
"I... Need...Water" she spat with as much force as she could muster.
The man's orbs widened in realization.
"Las! What she asked! Go, bring some water, Mora. Not too much."
But I need much! Her mind screamed.
           "But-"
"Do not protest Mora. Go on now"
Mora looked like she swallowed a bug, something different to her bubbly character. She stalked to the end of the igloo where the rectangular stand laid. She grabbed a bowl and fetched the clear liquid.
              "Here father."
Her father collected the bowl and faced Kai.
"Can you sit up Kai?" he called her name like an abominable word.
        Kai shook her head slowly.
         "Can't move."
Pale man nodded then, and gestured at his daughter to help her up.
Hands that felt like rubber gripped her shoulders and pushed her upwards, helping her lean against the wall. The bowl was then lifted to her lips.
The liquid was clear. As clear as water, maybe even more,  with a cool viscous feel - she drank it anyways.
             "More" she croaked.
Mora and her father shook their heads in unison,
"We can not... Er....Kai. Our water supply has dropped in tandem and we can not afford more-"
"But," her father interrupted earning a glare from Mora. "We can make a difference if you tell us where you hail from."
            "Father! We can not!"
"Do not speak to me in such manner Mora! We need to know who she is, she looks not like any of us. Perhaps Agron's prophecy is on its tow!"
"Agron speaks insanity, Father! Not a word of his is the truth." Mora moaned her orbs closing for a second before flicking open.
"You are but a child! Time is running out of Domus, I can feel it!"
"Do not be absurd, Father. Time cannot run out of time itself."
              Huh?
"Then how, dear Mora, do you explain-" her father was on his feet now walking towards the openings on the wall, "this? It's still Sesi! But we know certainly it is Tribus now!"
            Mora sighed.
"It's probably the officials father, maybe there's a slight problem with the photoids, which I am confident will be fixed soon."
Kai didn't care what ever was happening. All she wanted and needed was to get out of here and find her way home. The first step was more water, more energy.
           "Water...."
Both turned abruptly to look at her, anger flashing in their silver orbs and Kai felt stupid. Pale man marched towards her and bunched her shirt in his hands.
A bad feeling tickled in her chest.
"There will be no water, until you tell us who you are and where you are from!" he spat, his bulging eyes and hollow mouth made Kai wonder how he could speak without teeth.
But that was the least of her worries. If pink sweater wouldn't hesitate to gorge her eyes out with a knife or throw her into a glass cylinder, this people- whatever they were, could do much worse.
And Kai made a decision she hoped would at least buy her time.
If it doesn't run out quickly.
         "I... I don't remember. I can't... I swear...."

   There goes chapter two.
How's this chapter? Please comment, I need constructive criticism. Also I decided to use third person's POV. I'm much better at it than first person. It's not edited so there will be a few mistakes.
