The Surprise
I had been in the hospital for about a week now. From the crash, I had three broken fingers, a fractured wrist, and a torn muscle in my neck. Besides that, there were various cuts and dark purple, blue, yellow, and black bruises scattered over my body, but they weren't that bad. The only thing I was upset about was missing the casting for the show. My mom comforted me about it, and said that I would get a different opportunity at a different time. It still didn't make it sting less.
The police had shown up earlier in the week and had asked me some questions regarding the crash. They hadn't found any evidence relating to who cut the brakes and asked me who I thought might have done it. I had no clue. Who would be so insane to try and kill me? Sure, I knew some temperamental people, but not anyone willing to risk their entire life for it.
"Hey, Hun. Are you starting to feel pain again?" Nurse Grace came into my hospital room, pushing her little cart with little cups of various medications sitting on top, a computer and equipment for testing vitals attached as well.
"Yeah, a little bit," I replied, fiddling with the extensive collection of tubes connected to me. Nurse Grace nodded and brought over one of the little cups of pills, handing them to me.
"I'll get you some water," she smiled and walked out of the room. I looked down into the cup, two little red-orange pills nuzzled against each other. I lowered the cup into my lap, turning my gaze to the window. Some trees lived on a small strip of grass separating the parking lots. The hospital was parked in a mostly industrial area, so it was office building after office building, as far as the eye could see. The sound of clicking heels on the tiled floor entered the room, preceding Nurse Grace.
"Here you are, darling," she smiled as she handed me a small cup of water. I tossed the pills into my mouth, dunking my head back as I took a large swig of water. The pills tasted almost sour, but only for a moment until they were swallowed.
Nurse Grace took the little cup that once held my pills and threw it away, smiling. "How did you sleep?"
I shrugged, mumbling, "Fine."
Nurse Grace nodded and smiled, patting my shoulder. "Breakfast should be here soon."
"Okay."
"Hey, honey. How are you doing today?"
"Good. I'm feeling a bit better," I replied, smiling and taking my Mom's hand as she sat beside my hospital bed. Her hair looked messier than usual, and the bags under her eyes more prominent. She didn't say, but I could tell that she was obviously stressed. Of course she was worried about my well-being, but there was the underlying fear of the hospital bill. This would cost a fortune.
"That's good, dear. I'm glad you're doing better." She smiled a smile that looked like she had fishing hooks in the corners of her mouth, forcing them to be pulled up. "I have some good news. You know how you wanted to see Giselle? With Valeriya Matzcarona?"
I nodded vigorously, my eyes widening. Giselle was a world-famous ballet, and the star this time was my idol, Valeriya Matzcarona. She was amazing; her flexibility was astounding. She could go into the splits so far that you could pull her legs upward into a 'u' shape. Her extension went up to her face, and she could hold it there for hours without strain. She could do hundreds of pirouettes without missing a beat or getting dizzy. She was the perfect ballerina. She was everything a ballerina strived to be, everything ballet was. Everything I wasn't.
"Well, I got tickets and-"
I shot straight up from the hospital bed, slightly straining my neck but still looking like a child on Christmas morning. "Tickets?! But they're hundreds of dollars!"
"I have connections..." She smiled, looking more like herself when she saw my happiness. I hugged her so tight I felt her chest collapse, squeezing the air out of her, though being careful of my wrist and fingers.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
"Okay, okay, come on. It's tomorrow, and you're being let out today. So come on, get ready."
