The Place to Be
Three days ride from Devils Den
Me and Harry were at it again
Mining gold trying to strike it rich
Working like a son of a bitch
On the sluice from dawn till dusk
Embattled by this earth's bitter crust
Too tired to even get drunk at night
Well, ain't that a sight?
It ain't easy squeezing blood from stone
And wearing myself down to the bone
Two of my teeth, my pearly whites
Are broke and so am I
Life like this takes it toll on a man
When the only thing you see is your face in the pan
Makes you crazy, old before your time
But that's just one less mountain to climb
Down to the end with nothing to show
Except a mule with the shits and no blasted dough
Haven't seen my family in a year or two
And I'm coming down with the flu
Harry's got a woman in San Louie
Harry got a woman in San Louie
Harry's got a woman down in San Louie
Don't you know that's the place to be
There's a musical version of this poem in the External Link below.
