- Chapter 8 - Jack Kelly -
Warnings: mentions of Snyder, the Refuge, death
Third Person POV

The World Newspaper
Thief Escapes the Refuge

By: J.B. Barrington

On Saturday evening, thirteen-year-old Jack Kelly escaped the Refuge by jumping out of a second-story window.

Jack Kelly was placed in the Refuge at the age of nine. After escaping when he was ten-years-old, Kelly was caught and taken back to the Refuge just barely a year later.

"Jack Kelly is... a troubled boy," the warden, Snyder, explained in an interview. "He was caught stealing when he was nine, and was caught again after his escape attempt at age eleven," he said, shaking his head in disapproval.

The warden said that when Kelly had first been caught stealing and brought in, they found out that father had died just barely a year before, after losing his job and being kicked onto the street not long after.

"Jack's past made him a very... angry child," Snyder explained. "He'd kick us when we tried to help, he would starve himself. He didn't like to accept our help," he continued, a sympathetic look on his face. "He was angry at the world, which is why he needs to be back in the Refuge. Not just for his safety, but for everyone's safety."

Jack Kelly is a thirteen-year-old boy with shaggy, brown hair, brown eyes, and a more muscular, though still slim, build, with him standing at around average height.

Warden Snyder asks that everyone look out for him and let them know if you find him, so they can take him back to the Refuge where he's safe.

If you see thirteen-year-old Jack Kelly, contact Warden Snyder or the police immediately.

(310 Words)
Jack's age in the book (for all of the current-day chapters and not the newspaper chapter) is 17.
