Skyler's P.O.V
War.
War has taken a toll on all of us.
Pain.
Suffering.
Death.
A small disagreement can change the Galaxy any day. An argument can last a lifetime. A war, is a forever lasting nightmare. A scar on memory that never heals.
Though I never left my small home and seen anything out in the Galaxy. Lothal always seemed like a peaceful place with occasional beatings and shootings but that's normal. It's my home. Everyone has a little bit of craziness in them. If not then, well I couldn't imagine it.
A galaxy with peace. I don't know what it's like because of the Empire. I've seen them do a lot of bad things like taking people's homes, arresting for no good reason, and many more.
It is a horrible thing but that's just life.
That's what a normal person would say. Me... I would get involved and help the best I could.
Everyone has a right and the Empire takes it away through fear. I want to help by getting our freedom back.
"Skyler, it's time for school!"
"Coming, Mrs. Sumar!" I shouted back, and grabbed my school bag.
Mrs. Sumar is my guardian or caretaker. I couldn't really say she is my mother or adoptive parent because she is an old lady. She was like a grandma.
I never knew my real parents, nor has Mrs. Sumar ever talked about them but today, that's going to change.
"Skyler, you're going to be late!" She called again. I quickly made my way to the kitchen and grabbed a yogan.
"Bye!" I said and ran out the door to school.
Today is my sixteenth birthday and after school, shes going to tell me everything.
I struggled to grab my googles out of my bag then fidgeted them around my head. Mrs. Sumar never lets me take the googles to school so I sneak them out.
It's my dream to one day fly among the stars like a pilot and travel to different places. That's why I where the googles. I might miss Lothal but could always visit.
After a few minutes, I made it to school and threw the core part of the yogan in a trash can.
"If it isn't Sky loser."
Great. That was my very thought as I turned around to see Paden and her posse. Paden is very popular and like the Empire, she controls the school through fear. Her father is a well respected man in the Empire which gives the school a high 'honor' of having her here.
"If it isn't the queen of stereotypes," I teased while bowing, "How may I be of service?"
"Better get used to saying that. Before you know it, you'll have a master after your farm is taken away. At least I'm going somewhere in life while you'll be on this chunk of rock for the rest of your sad life, slaving away where all Twi'leks go to entertain drunkies," she deviously smiled, while everyone around us laughed. I gritted my teeth in anger and could feel my hands turn into fists.
I don't know what I ever did to her, honestly. One day, she just started to bully me. We actually used to be good friends but things have changed. She drove all of my other friends away making them go against me and stand with her.
"Let's face the facts Sky, your dreams are going to have to meet reality soon. Twi'leks don't fly ships. Let alone you never been in one, I'm guessing," Paden spat, now standing in front of me, "You will never be a pilot."
As quickly as time past, Paden snatched my googles and threw them to the floor. I tried to get the googles back but it was to late, she smashed them under her foot.
I fell to my knees and gently picked up the googles like a precious and fragile glass.
One of the lens shattered and the other fell off. They were very old googles but also very special. They gave me hope that inspired me like all the other pilot's in the Galaxy, no matter who they are, to fly.
"Maybe that's why your parents abandoned you," Paden continued, "They knew how much of a kriffing, head tailed, mistake you always were."
She walked off as I sat staring tormented by the whispering and laughing around me.
Suddenly, sadness was replaced with anger. My head shot up to see Paden talking to her friends, back facing me. The googles slipped out of my hands as I stood up and walked over to her.
I grabbed Paden's shoulder and roughly turned her around, raised my fist and collided it with her nose. A satisfying crack came too.
Everything went into slow motion. People gathered around a crying Paden, who was holding her bleeding nose. I backed up shocked at what just happened and looked at the hand that just did it. Blood stained my glove on my knuckle.
A hand rested on my shoulder as I felt something hit me in the eye. I was out like a light.
***
I woke up in the nurses room and was given an ice pack. After that, I was sent to the office and sat on a chair outside the office's door. My knees were pulled to my chest, hiding from the world around me. A lump was caught in my throat as tears burned my eyes. My head pounding like a drum from all the confusing emotions.
Pain.
Suffering.
Death.
All of it is and has happened inside of me. Slowly but surely, everything hurts from the words. From the truth.
The only one that has ever cared for me is Mrs. Sumar. Not even my own parents wanted me for kriffing sake! Yet, I never knew why they abandoned me on this rock. Maybe it's just better left unsaid than knowing the truth. The painful truth of why my parents didn't want me.
The first tear fell.
Soft footsteps approached then stopped, but I didn't look up, knowing who was standing right in front of me.
"Skyler..." I heard a familiar calm and soothing voice speak. Mrs. Sumar. She was here and no doubt about it, she knew what happened.
There was some shuffling until her presence was sitting next to me in a chair.
"Skyler, please look up and tell me what happened to cause such violence," she pleaded, "I know you better than that."
I didn't respond but felt more tears sliding down my face.
"Skyler..." Mrs. Sumar said a little more sternly. My hands clenched as anger built up and the whirlwind of emotions was catching up to me.
"Skyler, you need to tell me right no-"
"Would you quite it! You are not my mom!" I yelled, cutting her off. To my mistake, I raised my head, glaring and showed her my tear-stained face along with a black eye.
Mrs. Sumar was taken back by my sudden outburst. I was, to. Never once have I yelled at her with such...hate. It wasn't like me at all.
Calming down, the tears came back and soon, I was crying my eyes out. I placed my hands over my face to hide my shame.
Quiet sobs escaped my lips while muttering repeatedly, "Sorry."
I was waiting for some sort of punishment but instead felt arms wrap around me. I hesitated before leaning into her shoulder.
"Let's go home," She said, gently. I sniffed and nodded as we both stood up. My arms were wrapped around my frame defensively.
Mrs. Sumar placed an arm over my shoulders as we walked out of the school.
"Wait, don't I need to stay for school?" I questioned, not that I'm complaining.
"You need a break from all the hard work you've done to help the farm stay up and running. Plus, school," she answered.
Then continued after a small pause, "You were also suspended for a couple of days."
Figured.
Things went quiet between the two of us. That's when seeing Paden walking towards an imperial cruiser. She glanced over at me and glared before turning her head, getting into the cruiser.
I turned my head back to what was in front of me. A speeder.
Mrs. Sumar hopped onto the front seat as I sat behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist. She started the machine and took off, leaving behind a dust cloud. The whole ride back to the farm was silent, I pondered on today's events at school.
Worst birthday ever.
Sometime though, I'll be out of school and earn enough money for a ship. Then travel all over the Galaxy without having to worry about what troubles were and are to come.
I would be free.
Yet, in a Galaxy with an Empire, free was what you could get by earning it.
Running from problems won't solve them. It will just make things worse for everyone involved and come back harder.
It's kind of like me in a way.
If anyone socially is seen being nice or wanting to be friends with me, then Paden will come and change that. Lies, she gets it best from her father for the sake of their reputation.
Next thing I know, another person hates me. Another problem to be solved. Another problem that is avoided and nothing gets better after that. Nothing at all.
We arrived back at the farm.
Mrs. Sumar parked the speeder and got off. I hopped off next and followed her into the small house.
She gestured to a seat at the table and I so kindly sat in it. Mrs. Sumar began to make tea as I traced my finger on the surface of the table.
A cup of tea was placed in front of me. I looked up at her and smiled, thankful for the drink. She sat across the table nursing her own tea.
"Tea always helps a person relax after a stressful day," Mrs. Sumer spoke. I stared down at the steaming beverage.
I was reluctant. Why? I wasn't to sure. Mrs. Sumar was the easiest person to talk to in the darkest times like now. Yet, strangely it was hard to speak now.
"What's on your mind, dear?" She asked.
I glanced up to see worry drawn on her old features. What should I say?
My eyes averted back to my cup, again. Now that I think about it...there was something that has been bothering me.
"W-why," I began, stuttering but cleared my throat and tried again, "Why did my parents abandon me?"
She sighed and I looked up with interest.
"I did say that I would tell you about your parents today, didn't I?" She said, smiling. I sat up straighter.
"Do you know something about my parents?" I asked.
"I don't know just 'something.' I knew your parents a long time ago," she answered.
"You knew my parents!" I was utterly shocked at the information. They didn't abandon me on a complete stranger. They knew Mrs. Sumar and trusted her with me.
"Who were they?" I asked.
"Your mother is like you in every way. Strong-willed, smart, brave, kind. You both have a love for flying," Mrs. Sumar rambled.
I was amazed by the information.
"Was she imperial pilot?" I asked, skeptically.
She shook her head 'no.' "Your mother was the best rebel pilot I've ever seen over the years of my life."
Mrs. Sumar paused then bent over and came back up with two presents. "I believe you could do incredible things as well, if you have enough hope, also happy birthday." She pushed the biggest box over to me.
I reached into the bag and pulled out new googles. Not just that, but pilot googles.
"Thank you, I love them," I said, grateful and sliding them onto my head.
"Those googles were your mother's," Mrs. Sumar stated. That's when the googles became special to me. I smiled then got up, walked over and gave her a hug.
"Thank you," I repeated, again.
I pulled away from the hug and sat down in the seat next to her.
Mrs. Sumar handed me the other present. I held onto it but didn't go to open it, not yet.
"What about my dad? Where is he?" I asked, looking into wise blue eyes.
She sat back in her seat in thought before saying, "I got news that he went missing with some others a long time ago."
"Oh," was all I could say then realized, "Where's my mom?"
"I don't know. I'm sorry," she apologized, "When you came, an old clone dropped you off and then left as quickly as he came. I'm not sure why they gave you to me or what even happened."
I was disappointed in hearing such little information on my parents. They could be dead or alive for all I knew.
"But," she quickly said, getting my attention once again," they did love you very much and this present may help you find them." My eyes widen as they averted to the small box.
How could something so small track my parents? I wanted to desperately ask Mrs. Sumar more questions. My hand was inches away from the box when the house began to shake. Little bits of the ceiling crumbled.
I looked around to try and find the source of the disturbance. Fear pulsed through my veins. My heart beat quickened at the speed of light. Eyes trying to seek the reason to the situation.
The house shook again and the lights flickered on and off. I froze on spot.
"Skyler, look at me and listen carefully," Mrs. Sumar spun me until our eyes met. I wanted to look again but waited and listened. Everything around us disappeared in the moment.
"You will use this," She told me, gesturing to the present, "and find Specter 3. You got that."
I nodded understanding.
"Good, now go out the back door and take the speeder far from here," she ordered. I shook my head in disbelief.
"I'm not going to leave you," I trembled. Blue eyes softened and she kissed my forehead. Tears burned my eyes as I wanted this nightmare to end. It wasn't a nightmare, everything was real.
"You don't have a choice in the matter. Now go!" She demanded. I scrambled to my feet as the house shook again.
Larger pieces of debris began to fall as fire began to eat away at the house. I looked back at Mrs. Sumar one more time to see her walking out the front door.
I clutched the gift to my chest as my hand pushed a button to open the back door. I ran around the house and peeked around the corner to see three imperial transports parked out front.
"Fire!" Someone yelled.
They fired and shot the house destroying more of it in the process and going up in flames.
I backed away from the house from the fire and into the dry grass. My eyes spotted the speeder just a few feet away but I suddenly hesitated when seeing Mrs. Sumar talking with a high ranked imperial man.
I couldn't tell what they were talking about and tried to decipher by reading their lips. Still, there was no way to know what they were talking about.
The man pulled out his blaster from his holster and quickly aimed.
The next few seconds of my life was gone in a blast. The blaster firing and a body falling, soon hitting the ground in a heap. Dead. Mrs. Sumar is dead.
My mind tried the ravel what just happened a couple yards away. Wanting to believe that it was not real. Wanting to so desperately get away and cry my eyes out over the loss of the only person who cared for me. My heart ached and strived- yearned to be hugged once more.
It wasn't going to happen and it was a horrible feeling.
I covered my mouth as it finally hit in full force. Every emotion coming to its senses as reality hit. Mrs. Sumar is gone. I held back a sob and calmed down. She wouldn't of wanted me sitting here crying. She would want me to do something instead of grieving.
My eyes landed on the speeder, my present clenched in my hand. That was my goal. The speeder. I needed to get to the speeder before they spotted me.
I got into a running position and waited until full on sprinting to the speeder.
"Hey! Get that Twi'lek!" I heard someone yell but my main focus was on the speeder. Blasters began firing at me but I still kept running. I heaved for air as the speeder was now a couple feet away.
Three feet.
I screamed and fell to the ground, the present sliding away. The sounds of talking echoed in the air but I didn't care.
I got up to my feet and almost fell again. Someone was lucky enough to graze my leg. I limped over quickly grabbed the present. Sounds of running were coming towards me with yelling to stop. I didn't listen.
I kept limping until finally making it to the speeder. I hopped on and started the bike up before taking off into the dark night towards the city. I knew that the imperials were chasing me so I parked the speeder behind a giant rock and prayed that they go by it.
My prayers were answered as two speeders zoomed by, followed by the three transports. I sighed with relief and slowly followed a ways behind to the city.
When seeing lights up ahead, I spotted a tower. It seemed like it has been abandoned for years. I parked the speeder bike next to the tower and limped over to see a door. It slid open to reveal an elevator. I stepped in as the doors closed behind and it lurched, going one way, up.
While waiting, I examined the small present in my hand. My fingers fumbled to open it to reveal a small machine with black bands incasing the middle. The ends of it were white, one longer than the other. The longer part had a small, flat, speaker-like thing on the tip. On the side was a button.
I pressed the button and held it. It whistled to life. Was it some kind of communicator?
I didn't have time to answer that when the doors opened to reveal a room with stormtroopers' helmets, all sorts of weird objects and posters. I stepped into the dimly lit room and looked around to see no one. That's when spotting a medical kit laying on the table.
I placed the small machine back into the box and set it aside.
I took the kit and opened the lid to see a couple things including bandages and medicine to treat infections.
I sat on the nearest seat and rolled my pant leg up to see a gash on the side. It stopped bleeding and eventually, I'm going to need new clothes.
Carefully, I slowly tipped the bottle of medicine as some liquid began to pour out onto the wound. I bite my shirt from the stinging pain. My fingers fumbled with the gauze and raveled it around my leg, dressing the wound. I sighed in relief when it was over even if there were still some phantom pains in my leg.
My eyes began to flutter shut from the tiring day. A yawn escaped my lips as I stood and used the table to limp over to what looked like a bed. I laid down and went to sleep.
I woke up and didn't recognize where I was until the memories hit. I sat up, my legs going over the bed's edge. My lekku twitched a little from a pain running up and down my leg. Totally forgot about the leg injury.
Carefully, I stood on wobbly feet and leaned heavily against the wall. Then limped over to the table with the box with the small machine inside. My stomach growled from having no supper last night from the attack. I don't have any credits to buy anything to eat or drink.
Looks like the odds of stealing are going to be...hard. Especially with a hurt leg but luckily it stopped bleeding.
I grabbed the box and made my way to the elevator, getting in and going down. I limped over to the speeder and hopped on it. Maybe I could use the speeder to help steal something.
Determination flowed and a smile formed on my lips. I'm the daughter of the best rebel pilot in the Galaxy! Maybe, sometime...I could get a ship.
My stomach growled once again. But for now, breakfast first.
I lowered the googles over my eyes and drove towards Capital City. I traveled through the gate and headed to the markets with the fruit stands. It was hard avoiding stormtroopers and tougher getting through crowds but eventually I arrived at the market place.
The area was not crowded like most places which would make it easier to get away faster. My eyes scanned the area for a target until spotting a Rodian at a stand bargaining with someone. There was an alleyway next to the stand which will be the escape route. Now the problem would be getting the fruit without him noticing.
An idea sparked in my head and I made my move. I went a little down the alleyway then stopped and got off. Then leaned against the closest wall and raised my googles back onto my forehead. I quietly limped over and made sure he was distracted before snatching two yogans.
"Hey!"
The customer spotted me making the Rodain look over as well. I completely forgot about my leg and made a run for the speeder. It hurt but not as much if those two guys catch me.
I leaped onto the speeder and just as the two arrived, I took off down the alleyway. Eventually, they lost me. I ate my rewards and threw them into the trash.
I would have to earn money so stealing won't have to be used unless necessary.
I was just looking around the market until...BAM!
Someone shot at me and the speeder exploded. I covered my head and formed myself into a ball until feeling a rough landing. My side hurt but still stood and ran into a docking bay. I peeked around the corner and saw that Rodain talking to some troopers.
The troopers held up a wanted poster and I was on it. Great, why am I wanted by the Empire? I didn't do anything to them! They took and destroyed my life but still are looking for me!
"Over there!" One of the troopers pointed at me and that's when I ran into the port to find a diamond-shaped ship. It looked really nice and it amazed me for a moment until remembering that stormtroopers were coming.
What was odd about the ship was that the ramp was wide open. That's when my eyes caught the sale sign. An idea formed inside my head as I ran up the ramp and shut it. The stormtroopers were running and shooting but the ramp closed before they came.
I was safe for now but they will try and open the ramp. I needed to get out of here and the only way to do that was to fulfill my dream. Fly the ship.
I climbed the ladder, ignoring the throbbing in my leg. There was a pounding on the ramp but I kept walking down the hall, trying to find the cockpit.
The ship was very big that I thought that I would get lost but soon found the cockpit. I ran over to the pilot's seat and looked over the controls and buttons. Luckily, I've been reading books on ships on how to work and fix them.
I began to rapidly press buttons and soon, the ship was lifting off the ground. The stormtroopers below were firing at the ship.
A smile was maneuvered on my lips as I took off into the sky. Sometime, company will come and fighting will be hard since I'm sort of new to flying this ship. Some of these controls are foreign and others couldn't be reached without help from another person in the co-pilot's seat.
A beeping on the radar panel went off and three dots flashed. Three TIEs were coming up and fast. I had to get to hyperspace, pronto.
I flew up towards space and saw the TIE fighter's firing fly passed the ship. Soon I was in space and admired it, forgetting that I'm being chased. It was until the ship was hit did I think to press a few buttons then pushed a lever, sending me into hyperspace.
I sighed in relief and watched the blue hue of hyperspace.
From then, I knew that this was only the beginning.
I pulled out the box and opened it to reveal the small device. This will help me find my family. I grabbed the machine and stood up to look around my new ship.
There were cabins that will need filling and some things that will need fixed.
I sat in the common room and examined the device some more.
Once I figure out how to track Specter 3 then I can find my family. There will be many obstacles in my path and things that need to be done.
But it would all be worth it.
