19. Ice Cold

Lei's POV

I'm in Noah's room and it's completely dark. As my eyes adjust to the darkness I can see shadows dancing on the wall, they mock me as they disappear before me. I feel a draft of cool summer air drift through the room and it leaves goosebumps on my bare skin. I shiver and walk to the window to close it.

As I shut the window I hear a squeak from the door and I spin around to see the door closed. Nothing and nobody is there, I squint my eyes just to make sure and still nothing appears in my vision. I walk towards the door, every footstep loud to my ears. The doorknob is cold to the touch and I turn it, but it doesn't open.

The doorknob spin around and around until it drops at my feet and I jump back.

Thud.

"Shit," I spin around to see a book has fallen from the bookcase. I take a step towards it and try to read the title, but I don't need to. I remember the cover of "A Cold Trail". I crouch down to the book and will myself not to open it. But my body doesn't listen and I open it to see a gold watch.

"What the fuck are you doing in here?"

I don't get the time to turn around to see who it is before I hear a new and totally different voice, interrupting my dream.

"Lei, wake up before I pour ice water on you. I can't believe you fell asleep while we were watching "10 Things I Hate About You". That's literally your favorite movie," a whiny voice complains in my ear and I reach out a flail my arm in the air.

"Shit! What the hell was that for," Spencer exclaims while holding his nose and giving me a deadly glare. Thankfully I am immune to the glare so I didn't die. I sit up in his bed and give him my best "you love me" smile and pinch his mocha cheeks.

"I swear to god, you are such a child," he sulks and I release his cheeks. I crawl off of the bed and stand up before giving him a look, "Look who's talking."

I tiptoe on the cold wooden floorboards and walk into Spencer's small kitchen. I open his vintage refrigerator and look inside. Inside there's milk, ketchup, bread and cereal. Yes, there's a cereal box in his, basically empty, refrigerator.

Well I guess I can't make waffles.

I grab the cereal, the milk and two bowls and two spoons. I sit down at the kitchen table and begin to pour my cereal when Spencer walks into the kitchen. He sits down next to me without a word and pours his cereal.

"So we never talked about stupid Noah," Spencer says between a mouthful of cereal and I roll my eyes.

"Because we're not going to talk about that asshole," I respond and Spencer huffs at me.

"I told you all about Emma. You should tell me about Noah. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Plea-"

"Fine," I set down my spoon and look at Spencer straight and begin my story.

He listens to every word that comes out of my mouth. He listens to my feelings of confusion, my findings that make me suspicious of Noah. He listens to me rant about the incredibly fancy restaurant he took me to for the date and how I couldn't control myself. He listens to my need for the truth and the possibility in my head. My thoughts of moving out because I can't live with someone I don't know. He listens to everything and doesn't say a word until I'm done.

He picks at his soggy colorful cereal and spins it in the bowl. I look into his bowl too and I wish my life was like that bowl. Colorful, fun and delicious. It would be a lot more simple. I like simple.

"That's a lot to take in," he finally says and I nod my head in agreement. I lay my head down on his kitchen table as he continues eating his cereal.

"You know, let's do something- something fun- do you have any ideas?" Spencer begins to get excited and his volume increases.

"I don't know. I feel like laying around in these cozy sweats and doing nothing. Thanks by the way, for the sweats, they're super comfy."

"Let's go ice skating!" Spencer exclaims, clearly ignoring my suggestions and runs back towards his room. I follow him back and he's going through jackets, long-sleeves and other winter clothes. A pair of wool socks hits me in the face.

"You want to go ice skating... in summer?" I ask him as he now goes through his massive beanie collection, deciding on which one to wear.

"Of course I do. I don't understand ice skating in the winter. It's already cold out and then you want to go ice skating where it's even colder? No common sense at all. Meanwhile if you go during summer then it's like a cool down because it's hot outside."

"You've given this a lot of thought haven't you?"

"Yes now pick some of my stuff to wear and let's get the hell out of here."

...

Spencer decided on a green beanie which made me think of Noah because it's the same color as his eyes. I am wearing gray sweats, which I'm probably keeping because I've fallen in love with them. I have on one of Spencer's tank tops and a sky blue sweatshirt over it. To finish off my "ice skating during summer look" I am wearing Spencer's white beanie.

I know I sound like a mess, but it's okay because I am a mess.

We get to the ice skating rink and pay the money to get in. Nobody else is to be seen, it's almost scary how empty the whole place is. We get our skates on and race each other to the rink. Spencer beats me because he's taller and we cautiously step out onto the slippery, cold ice.

"I'll race you around the rink," I challenge Spencer and he throws on his game face.

"It's on," he pulls his beanie down farther and I do the same. I get into position to skate as quickly as I can and get ready to kick off the ice.

"On your mark, get set... go!"

Spencer and I kick off at the same time and immediately I am in the lead. All thanks to two years of ice skating lessons when I was 8 and I was sure I was going to be an ice skater in the Olympics. As we turn along the wall of the rink Spencer begins to take the lead. He laughs in victory as he passes me and I flip him off.

It's a straight away to the finish line and I put my all into it. I feel the cold ice rink air rush past my face as my pace increases with every millisecond and as I'm about to pass Spencer I hit a ice piece on the rink and fly forward. The world goes in slow motion as I fall forward and into Spencer who begins to fall on the ice and he braces for impact.

Spencer goes into a roll and I do as well. I'm thankful for there not being many people there because we would be getting run over.

"Are you okay?" I can hear the laughter in Spencer's voice as he lays on the ground, staring up at the ceiling, inches away from the finish line.

"I'm perfect," I laugh as I crawl past Spencer and to the finish line. He groans and rolls onto his stomach to give me an adorable glare.

"You owe me a pepsi now."

"What? We never agreed to that."

"Well you're going to do it because you love me, right?"

"Um, no."

"Spenceeer, Please?"

...

After we finished our ice skating we went to the cafeteria that was in the rink and Spencer bought me a pepsi. Then we left the ice skating rink and promised to go back next summer. I have decided it's better during summer than it is during winter.

Now Spencer is taking me back to the apartment. Which I was first hesitant about going to because being with Spencer makes me unreasonably happy and I'm not sure if I'm ready to leave that behind. But I decided it's for the best that I live where I live. But moving in with Spencer is not a bad idea.

We turn into the parking lot for the apartments and I sink into the seats of the minivan and give Spencer puppy eyes.

"Can't I just live with you?" I unbuckle my seat belt and Spencer gives me a look.

"Go. Be a boss bitch and find out the truth that you seek," Spencer advises and I roll my eyes at his terrible accent. I open the door and shut it behind me.

"Bye Spencer."

"Sayonara, Lei."

I walk up the stairs of the apartment. What if Noah has someone over? What if Noah is trying to kill me in my sleep? What if Noah is stealing from the government? Random-ass questions float through my head as I unlock the door and enter the dark apartment. I turn on the closest lights and see that nothing has changed since the last time I was here.

"Adrian?" I call into the apartment as I walk down the doors and to the farthest. On it is a sticky note saying that he's with his parents and won't be back until tomorrow. I walk to my room and open it, to see that nothing has moved.

I jump onto my bed and my eyelids feel heavy. In no time I drift off into a much needed sleep.

...

I wake up from my sleep when I hear the front door shut. I hear rustling as Noah walks around the kitchen and I go to my door to see if I can peek to see him.

I crack the door and look through the crack and there I see him. He sits on the kitchen counter and drinks a glass of milk. He's dressed in full black and his pockets sag. He shows no emotion on his face and he looks deep in thought. I roll my eyes and leave the door. I return to my spot on the bed and think of all the homework I need to do in the morning.

...
