11. Rose
Lei's POV
It's been a while since I've heard anything from outside Noah's door.
I've spent an hour or so in his room. His room is nothing like how I would have imagined it, not that I would. Or have. That's stalker-like, something Noah would do, not me.
Instead of it being messy and dark like other male rooms I've been in. The windows are open and all available sunshine wafts into the room. The walls are blank except for two pictures. One is a pretty young woman with green eyes and holding a baby wrapped in a forest green blanket, the same shade as his eyes. It must baby Noah and his mom.
The other photo is Noah standing next to a man. They stand side by side and Noah has a big, proud grin on his face as he holds up two fish. The man wears a bucket hat and wears a mischievous smile that I have seen Noah wear. But the man looks too old to be his dad, unless his mom likes older men. I mean, you never know.
The rest of his room is ordinary. Light gray comforter on white sheets and a small bookshelf in the corner. I get a closer look and see it's all mystery and action. Interesting.
The table next to the bed is neat and only has a lamp and a phone charger on it. From what I can see through the partially open closet door, is a closet cleaner than mine.
Why is he cleaner than me? Maybe he doesn't even live here, he could be a spy or something and this is just his alibi? Do spies hang photos of their family? Actually I think he is an alien. Anyways
I slowly open Noah's door and I still only hear silence-
Nope I hear music, hopefully a good sign that no one is going to chase me once I exit Noah's bedroom. I walk carefully into the living room and no one is in there. So, I continue into the kitchen and it's spotless. It shines and you can almost hear the angel harmony. There is no evidence that once upon a time there was a catastrophe of mess. On the kitchen island I see a plate with a waffle and a cup of syrup next to them.
On a sticky note next to them Lei is written in scratchy handwriting and a smile covers my face. This is so sweet, I cannot wait to eat it. But I wonder where the music is coming from, it seems like it's coming from the top of the fridge, I reach my hand above the fridge and I feel a phone.
I take it down and the lock screen lights up with a picture of Adrian and Noah. They have huge smiles on their faces with Adrian's arm slung over Noah's shoulder. It must have been taken recently and I smile at the picture. They both look like their on top of the world with no care in the world.
"I see you've found my phone." Noah walks into the kitchen and I nearly drop the phone.
"Don't scare me like that!" I lightly hit his arm as he reaches for his phone. He laughs and it lights up his face. He has such a nice smile.
"Who's the stalker now?" He asks as I hand him his phone. I feel a blush burn on my cheeks as I realize he's right. I've done snooping of my own and more he doesn't know about.
Blushing Lei? Really? You can't be nice to him yet. Hopefully he won't notice.
"Do you always blush like a rose when you're embarrassed?" He smirks at me and I feel my cheeks burn even more. I look down at the waffle and stuff a piece in my mouth. He laughs at me and sits on the stool next to me.
"Like a rose? I've never heard that one before." I say after I've swallowed a piece of the glorious waffle. Everyone always says "tomato" and I hate it, with every atom of my being. He nods and steals a bite of waffle.
"Yeah, because it's cute. Tomato makes it seem bad and lobster is even worse. Couldn't someone be more creative and say like a strawberry or rose?" He inquires and I feel my whole face light up. He smiles easily and takes another bite of waffle.
I can feel my heart swell at his words but I don't show it. To hide a smile I muster a frown, "Stop eating my waffle."
"I made it, so technically it's mine." He takes another bite and when I look down at the waffle. Only a quarter is left and I've only had one bite.
"What the hell? How big of bites did you take?" I say, incredulous at the amount of waffle he's eaten in three bites, he shrugs.
I stuff the last quarter in my mouth before Noah can steal it. He smirks at me as I chew with chipmunk cheeks. His dark hair falls in front of his eyes and I have the instinct to move it to the side. But he moves it himself almost as if he could read my mind.
"Possessive? Are we?"
"Only sometimes." I respond after I've finished the quarter of my waffle.
I need a glass of milk.
"Oh, here's your glass of milk madam. Just how you like it." Noah hands me a glass of milk he took out of the fridge. I narrow my eyes at him and he holds his hands up.
"How do I know you didn't poison this?" I ask him and pick up the glass to inspect it further. The milk seems normal but I'm sure many people thought that before taking a sip or bite of something poisoned. He shakes his head, laughing at me and takes the glass from my hands.
"Here, I'll show you it's not poisoned." He lifts the glass and takes a long sip before returning it to my hands. He does a slow turn with his arms out.
"See, perfectly fine." He says and smiles at me, again.
He needs to stop smiling at me.
"That's what the poisoned people thought too. But then a minute later bam dead." I hit my fist of the island to demonstrate. Noah nods his head with mock understanding before bursting out with laughter.
"I'm being serious!" I cross my hands over my chest, tired of not being taken seriously. Once Noah catches his breathe, I lose mine. That goddamn smile.
It's just a smile, Lei. Calm down. Think of all the girls he's smiled at, or made smile, or smiled for. He's a male, he ain't shit.
"What happened to Spencer?" I ask, changing the conversation and turning to take care of the dirtied dishes.
"Adrian took him home and then he said he had an errand to run. He said he didn't know when he'd be back either." Noah leans on the counter next to me as I put the dishes in the dishwasher.
"So you really did all this work by yourself?" I gesture to the spotless kitchen and he nods. His green eyes meet mine.
"Thank you." I hold his gaze in mine and he shrugs his shoulder as if he's saying no big deal.
"Remember this the next time I piss you off." He breaks eye contact and he brushes me as he leaves the kitchen.
...
I hear knocking on my door. I had nearly fallen into blissful sleep but apparently that's not allowed here. Can a girl get her beauty sleep please?
I wait a couple seconds to see if they'll go away but I hear the knocks again. I sign what could Noah possibly want? It's 1 in the morning and I had stayed up studying for a test tomorrow. I crammed information I had possibly forgotten and finished the homework.
"Yes?" I ask from my bed, too lazy to get up and open the door.
"We have a problem." Noah whispers loudly from the other side of the door. I slowly get up and walk to my door to see the problem. I open the door and see Noah's figure resting against the door frame. He has gray sweats on and no shirt. His washboard abs stare at me as I stare back.
Oh shit.
No stop, it doesn't affect you, Lei. You are untouchable.
"See something you like?" He asks me and I sense the smirk on his no-good-devil face.
"No. Can we get back to what you woke me up for?" I lean against the door frame as well, growing impatient that I've been called out of bed for this.
"Oh. Yeah, we have a problem."
"Let me guess. You caused it?" I say sarcastically and I go to shut the door so I can go back to sleep but his damn foot is in the way.
"Lei, I don't know how to tell you this." He says nervously and runs his hand down his face. I roll my eyes, this man is dramatic. But in the darkness I can tell he is serious. I open the door fully again and touch his arm.
"It's okay, you can tell me." I reassure him and he looks at me with puppy dog eyes.
"Okay, so," He runs his hand through his hair, "I kind of watched The Conjuring and now I can't go to sleep." He rushes his words and I pause.
"Aw, is poor Noah-poo scared of horror movies?" I talk in a baby voice and squeeze his cheeks. But as if his hands are on fire I take my hands back.
I cannot be this comfortable already, this is absurd.
"Can you just come watch a stupid kids movie so I can fall asleep?" He asks me, and I, cannot take this offer down. I get to watch a movie while falling asleep next to a portable heater (Noah) and I get to tease the hell out of him tomorrow.
"Yes, I can."
I grab a pillow and a blanket before walking to the couch. Noah is already there with the TV on and he is scrolling through Disney movies. I sit down next to him, but put a pillow in between us, just in case. You know? I feel his eyes on me as he keep scrolling through the movies and I become impatient.
"Give me the remote." I demand and he hands it to me without any hesitation. I go to the search and find exactly what I want to watch.
"Not Tangled." He groans, leaning into the pillow I put between us.
"I can just go back to my room right now instead?" I suggest to him and he immediately shuts up and the movie starts.
This is the story of how I died. But don't worry, this is actually a very fun story...
...
