Prologue: Hurt and Tragedy
I screamed as I watch my father fall to the ground, his forest green eyes open wide.
“No!!! Daddy!” I run forward towards him, sobbing.
As quick as I rushed forward, I felt myself being pulled away from him. A hand clamps over my mouth and I feel a pressure at my throat.
“Don't move little girl or your next!” A deep, husky voice declares.
“Reducto!” I sigh in relief as my capture falls to the ground.
“Come on, Dylan! We have to go!” My mother grabs me by the hand and started pulling me outside the house and towards the garden.
“Mother, who were those men?” I shout as I run to keep up with her pace.
“They were Death Eaters, followers of the Dark Lord. . . Dylan, listen to me. Whatever happens to me, promise that you'll hide from them and not come out for any of them, okay?” We run pass the rows and rows of beautiful and luscious flowers, towards the pool house. “The only time you come out is when your Uncle Albus comes, okay, sweetie?”
“But momma-”
“Just promise me that if anything. . . If anything happens to me. . . That you won't come out until your uncle finds you. Can you do that for me, darling?” We made it to the wooden shed just at the edge of the garden. The Death Eaters' footsteps could be heard coming closer.
I shake my head yes and my mother's baby blue eyes start to swell with tears.
“I love you so much, Dylan. . . You are the sweetest, kindest girl I know and I couldn't ask for a better daughter than yourself. . .” Tears were rapidly falling down her cheeks.
Standing there, frozen and scared, I feel tears falling down my own cheeks.
The Death Eaters footsteps are now only a few yards away from the shed. When one of them spots my mother, she pushes me into the shed.
Just before she closes the door, she tells me, “Your father and I will always be with you, Dylan. . . Never forget that. . . We will always be watching over you. . .”
With that, the door closes and darkness consumes me.
I cry even harder as I hear my mother's shrieks of pain as the Death Eaters torture her to death.
It seems like hours have passed when someone comes to the shed and opens the door, bright sunlight shining in through it.
“Dylan. . .” He says it as a statement and not a question.
“Uncle Albus!” I rush forward, seeking comfort in the arms of my mother's brother.
“Shh. . . It's okay, sweetie. . . Shh. . . Everything will be okay now. . .” He whispers comforting words to me, stroking my hair.
“I can't believe they're gone. . . I just can't believe Momma and Daddy are gone. . .” Tears run rapidly down my cheeks as I mourn for the loss of my parents.
“Neither can I, darling. . . Neither can I. . .” My uncle sounds like he is on the verge of tears so I hug him tightly.
“Will it be okay, Uncle Albus?” I ask him, wanting to hear that it would.
“It will get better over time, my dear. . .” Is all he says as he starts to lead me out of the shed.
As I left the shed and stepped into the garden I half-expected to see the Death Eaters still standing there, torturing my mother.
I shudder as the realization of my parents deaths hits me again.
Never again would I see my parents. . . Never again would they hug me and tell me that they love me. . . Never again would they tell me everything would be okay after I had a nightmare. . . I had lost my parents that day and that was a wound that not even time could heal.
