Chapter 49: A Fresh Start.

"What's your plan now?" My dad asked me, eyeing me from behind his newspaper.

"I'm staying here for a week more with Brianna. Then, the two of us will head back to the city and since I missed most of the semester, once I get home, I will be burying my head in my notes and study for the finals," I informed, taking a spoonful of cereal.

"I'm proud of, you know that right?" He asked for confirmation.

"Yes dad. I know," I smiled, taking another bite. "When are you and mom coming to visit me?"

"Probably during Thanksgiving or Christmas. We need to check our schedules," he said and acted to open an imaginary book, checking his 'schedule.' I laughed at the silliness and making a mental note of this moment as I was going to leave them and I would miss these small things.

"Your father is joking. We will be there for your graduation," my mom joined us and informed.

"Oh, thank god. I was afraid you'll forgot my graduation. I was about to announce the two of you the worst parents, but I guess you'll are not that bad after all," I giggled.

"What's going to happen between you and Blake?" Mom questioned me.

"It turns out his precinct is only an hour away from me. So, we decided to go visit each other alternatively after I graduate. Until then, he would be coming over for weekends and we would meet halfway for weekday dates," I said.

"It's good to see you happy, dear." My mother smiled.

"You guys are being cheesy. I'm not leaving for another week. Save it for later," I mumbled trying my best not to get emotional. "Anyways, I gotta go. Brianna and I are supposed to go at Jordan's to helping him pack."

Shortly aftert that, we arrived at Jordan's place. Brianna had received a distressed call from Jordan and all she could perceive was that he was having a fashion emergency and needed our help. Of course, it was not meant to be a fashion emergency. Jordan was feeling anxious about the big change in his life and was indecisive of the clothes he should take there.

We let ourselved in and straight away went to the room. I halted at the doorframe and looked at all the clothes sitting on the bed with wide eyes. Brianna, on the other hand, started rummaging through the mess of clothes and threw away the ones she felt repulsive too. Jordan gave me a worried look and I returned an assuring smile.

"You might wanna slow your roll, Bri," I said in a very low voice.

"But he created a mess!" She said with exasperation. "Brianna needs to help. Brianna a good friend."

"Did you just refer to yourself in third person?" Jordan rose an eyebrow.

"She does it when she feels pressure," I whispered as I walked up to him.

"This wasn't supposed to pressurise her," he told me, now regretting his decision to call her over.

"Oh no, this is her escape," I said. "It's probably because she needs to go back to her fake world and she is not ready for it yet."

"Does she have to immediately start working?" He asked me.

"I guess," I shrugged. "She did take a long hiatus."

We stood in a long silence as we looked at our friend sort his clothes. She was really good at it. She solved something Jordan was worrying about since yesterday. Once she was done, she gazed at us and gave us a small smile. She was also aware that she got carried away, but none of us criticised her about it.

Jordan walked over to his bag and kept all the clothes in them neatly. After that, the three of us moved to the cozy living room and plopped on the sofa. I closed my eyes, taking in a deep breathe and savoring this feeling.

"She would be really proud of us, you know." Brianna mentioned.

"When I was at the hospital, waiting for all of you to come, I dreamt of Rose. We had a nice chat and she made me soup," I chuckled a little. "It felt so good."

"I really miss her when I am alone," Jordan chimed in. "Rosalind taught me that being soft did not mean you were weak. Even after I met you guys, I felt I did not belong for a really long time. But, I guess it was only because I was afraid to move on. The thought of losing all my memories with her terrified me."

I placed my hand on top of Jordan's and gave it a small squeeze. "I am sorry you felt that way."

"But, we are glad to have met you Jordan Hayes," said Brianna.

"Trust me, the pleasure is all mine. You guys gave me a second chance at life and you have absolutely no idea how much it means to me," he smiled.

Another long pause followed after the heavy conversation.

"Jordan?" Brianna called out his name, making him hum in response. "What is your best memory with Rosalind?"

"Gosh, I have so many," he said and heaved a sigh.

"Choose one," Brianna said.

"Alright, so, this one day, Rosalind called me in the middle of the night and since it was unlike her to bother someone at that time of the night, I picked it up. She was hysterical on the other side of the phone. I got out of bed and tried to calm her down. She would not talk but kept on sobbing and crying and it freaked me out. Then, I asked her where she was and she told me she was at a park and felt really unsafe and was terrified because she kept seeing these shadows of men running around."

"What was she doing at a park so late?" I interrupted.

"The trees and the fresh air helped her think," he informed me and I just nodded. "Yes, so, I get my jacket and my keys and leave for the park. The entire ride, I kept on asking myself 'what if something happens to her?' Because I knew that if anyone from Lucas's gang were to find out she was pregnant with his child, they would make her abort it. When I finally reached, I did not even care enough to check where I parked my motorcycle and rushed inside, yelling out her name."

"I don't like where the story is going," Brianna muttered under her breathe but then gestured him to continue speaking.

"Suddenly, my world went dark when someone put their hands on my eyes and I was about to fight them, but then I heard a familiar giggle and furrowed my brows in confusion. When I turned around, I saw one park bench decorated with ribbons and balloons and a cake sat in the middle of it."

"It was your birthday," I happily whispered.

"It was the first time somebody had made an effort to celebrate my birthday," he looked at me with nostalgic eyes and a small smile.

Brianna wrapped her arms around Jordan, letting out a small cry. At the sudden action, Jordan's entire body stiffened up but he let go the uptightness and put his arms around her waist and closed his eyes at the term of endearment.

"My favourite Rosalind memory is when I was feeling low because of school stress and I think Brianna and I had a fight?" I looked at Bri, unsure of the reason why we fought or if we even fought.

"Is it about the time when you watched your first horror movie?" She asked me.

"Yes!"

"Oh yeah, we did fight then." She sheepishly smiled.

"Okay, so before I go on with the story, there is something you should know," I excitedly spoke to Jordan. "I had never successfully completed a horror movie before. Now, back to the story. I was not feeling too good and then my doorbell went off and mom said that Rosalind was here to see me. This was during the time period when we had just become friends and weren't that close. So, seeing her at my place for quiet a surprise for me. Then, she walked up to my room and before I could ask her, she hugged me. I swear it was one of the best feeling ever."

"Her hugs were very precious," Brianna said.

"Yes! And she told me how she noticed I wasn't myself lately and asked me what was bothering me and we talked for almost an hour before she suggested that we should watch a horror movie and both of us had never watched an entire one before. I was unsure but since she came over to comfort me, I couldn't say no. Then, we did it. Rosalind and I watched The Exorcism together, holding on to each other for our dear lives. It's a refreshing memory."

"I was so jealous when I found out that I was not the person who made you see your first complete horror movie. But, I let it go," Brianna said.

"What about you Brianna? What's your favourite memory of Rose?" Jordan asked.

"It was a casual day for me at school. Until, someone spread a rumour that I slept with one of the jocks and that's when I lost my shit. Valerie tried to calm me down, but I ignored her. So, I walked around terrorising people to give me the name of the person who spread the rumour and when they did, I wasn't too surprised to know it was Janet. By the way, Janet was one of my arch enemies."

"I lured her to the bathroom was going to punch the crap out of her when Rosalind stopped me. She asked me why I was making a huge deal out of a stupid rumour and I told her I did not like it when someone messed with my reputation. When Janet entered, Rosalind grabbed my arm and firmly said no, but after a second she said I could punch her once if I wanted to. Without wasting time further, I walked up to Janet and slapped her hard. Later, when I asked Rose about it, she said that she was trying to understand me better. I mean, Valerie had been very welcoming, but I did like her very much. I mean, it was difficult for me to open up to her. The fact that she let me punch Janet meant a lot to me."

A happy smile all the three of our faces. We had thousands of good memories with Rosalind and slowly all of them were surfacing up. Maybe, we all got our complete closures. The emptiness left by the loss of our dear friend was fading away as a big jar of sweet evocation replaced it.

We spent the entire day talking, exchanging recollections and joking. For the first time in many months, I could completely let go of all the worries and laugh. Brianna and Jordan too. The three of us had unlocked a new level of comfort and had found support within each other.

I caught Jordan several times looking warmly at my friend, but instead of remarking it or teasing him about it, I stayed hushed about it. He was allowed to feel a certain way towards a specific somebody without feeling embarassing about it.

Brianna, however, did not acknowledge the small gestures he was sending her way. It was probably because she was too caught up finding her true self to notice it. Or maybe she did notice it but chose to ignore it. Because out of the two of us, Brianna was the one with commitment issues. It was no because her hope to find a loved one was lost, it was because she was very insecure about herself and was afraid to mess it up. If only she could look at her from eyes because then she would know that even her worst flaws made her who she was.

I may not have admit it out loud, but I was going to miss this town. Never in my wildest dream had I thought I was say something like this, but it's true. Whether I accepted it or not, this town contained all of my childhood experiences. It had people who loved me unconditionally, respected my decisions. I was grateful for the people with whom I had a bad past with. As they were the ones who made me learn about the real world. A world with monsters and messed up people co-existing with people who are angels disguised as humans.

We ended up having an eventful evening as all of us dined together at Picasso. The diner was crowded with people chattering and gossiping. When we entered, all eyes fell on us. Most of them were sending sympathetic glances while others eyed Jordan with suspicion. It was really uncomfortable in the beginning, but Brianna asked us to ignore it and just get a booth.

"After dinner, I have a thing planned for us," Brianna informed, taking bite of her cheese pizza. Yes. She was eating a pizza full of layers of different cheese. It was an occasion for celebration and she was not holding back any longer.

"Why does that give me anxiety?" I muttered, taking a spoonful of my tomato soup.

Jordan squinted his eyes and looked at Brianna as if he was trying to figure out what she was talking about. "It's nothing," she insisted. But knowing her well, the funny feeling did not leave my gut.

After having a fun dinner, Brianna removed her keys and led us all into the car. To quench my curiousity, I looked around, trying to find a hint but found nothing. I knew I would soon figure it out as I knew almost all the roads and where they would lead us.

"Blindfold yourselves," she smiled, handing us two satin cloths.

"Absolutely not!" Jordan protested. "I don't like surprises."

"Says the guy whose favourite memory with Rosalind is a surprise party," I scoffed. "But, I do agree with Jordan. I don't like this particular surprise."

"If you do not blindfold yourselves now, I am stopping this car and taking the both of you back home and you will never know what I was talking about. Ever." The tone of her voice clearly indicating she was threatining us and getting an element of surprise was much better than going back home with zero information.

I accepted the cloth forcefully and tied it to my eyes. Jordan let out a sigh too before accepting his cloth and I guess he used it too. The next few minutes were extremely consternating. Darkness was all I could work it. My other senses were heightened, but since it was some time into the night, there was much noise around other than the roaring of the engines.

The car came to a halt. My heart beat quickened and I started bouncing my legs. I heard a door open and knew she was letting Jordan out first. A few seconds later, my door opened and Brianna's icy hands touched my arm. I took a sharp intake of breathe as my feet touched the ground. It was hard, so I knew we were still on a road.

"I am going to both of your hands and take you somewhere. Stop freaking out at the change of surroundings, it is totally safe," Brianna spoke excitedly.

I linked my hands with hers and she started leading us to my left. All the three of us were walking slow as the two of us were practically blinded tepmorarily and one of us had the responsibility of taking the two of us to a place we were not aware of.

The ground immediately changed from solid to ticklish. My brows furrowed as I started deducting places we could not be at. Was it grass? It was probably grass. Were we at a park? Was she taking us to where Jordan was surprised?

"Okay, stop walking." She ordered.

Before I took away my blindfold, I listened to noises for help but only could hear the insects of the night. I sighed and opened my blindfold and let out a little shriek when I saw a tombstone. But my muscles relaxed when we were standing in front of Rosalind's grave.

"Umm..." Jordan hummed.

"We never got a chance to visit Rosalind properly. We were too busy figuring out who did it and avenge her. So, now that we are free of that burden, we can all talk to her."

"It's very thoughtful, Bri," I commented.

"I know. I also got a picnic mat and the ouija board."

"Ouija board? What do we need that for?"

A gush of nostalgia hit me when I thought of the time we all snuck out to come here and ask Rosalind who killed her. But things drastically changed since then.

Jordan, the man who once looked at her grave with no emotions, now had teary eyes. He adjusted the flowers placed near her tombstone. "Hey, Rose. It's been a really long time since I last talked to you. I want you to know that not a day goes by without missing you. It was really difficult for me to come to terms with your death and it still is. But I guess, I am no longer in denial and have accepted it. But, it still feels a little surreal sometimes, you know? But, I need to tell you that I am doing something nice for myself. I am taking a step to make my life better and I also thank you for giving me such wonderful friends," he smiled, looking at the both of us. "I love you Rosalind and I always will."

I wiped the warm liquid rolling down my cheeks and patted Jordan's back. Since it was all so emotional, I also let out a small giggle to get rid of the denseness the air held.

Jordan slid back as Brianna sat on Jordan's place, facing the tombstone. For some time, she did not say anything. I think she was looking for the correct words to beging the conversation with.

"So, you probably sensed my struggle to talk with you. I guess, I could start by apologising. I am sorry for thinking you were trying to get in between me and Val. I did not do well with friends anyways and when I made some, they would leave me for my nature. But Valerie stuck till the end and then you came along and the two of you immediately hit it off and I just felt left out and I did not like it. But of couse, as time passed by you started growing on me and soon after that, you became one of my favourite people. Let's just say that you have your way with people. You taught me so many things and I am so so grateful for all that." She kissed the tip of her fingers and placed them on the cold stone, near her name. She, then looked at me and blinked several times, trying to get rid of the tears.

Brianna then made her way to where I was sitting and I crawled to her place so that I could face the tombstone. I sat there and let my eyes wander around. I did not have much to say. I did not know what to say. I had expressed all of my feelings when I had that beautiful dream. Was silence an option?

The answer was soon given to me when Brianna got closer to me and placed her head on my shoulder, taking in a deep breathe. I put my head on top of hers and started at my friend's name engraved on the stone. Jordan snuggled a little closer to and I linked my hands with him and brought them closer to my knees.

The three of us stayed like that for a short period but the love, warmth and comfort we all provided to each other made it feel like an eternity. A blissful eternity.

Well, that's it. This is the end.

Just kidding. The epilogue is still there. But yeah, for the chapters, this is the last one.
