Chapter 24: Picasso.
Jordan was in prison for something he didn't do.
I felt a pang of anxiety in my gut because my mind told me he was framed. Why wouldn't he be? We were getting so close to catching the killer, they had to retaliate somehow.
But the thought that the killer knew what our plans were made me shudder. I hoped that they didn't bug this place. Because if they did, it would be almost impossible to catch them.
Framed or not, I had to save Jordan. We all did.
Lenny forced me into going to Picasso tomorrow without an important member of our posse. I argued and debated but had to give in.
I had informed Brianna about this turning of events through text. I didn't want her to wake up to such awful news, but somebody had to tell her.
Currently, I was seated in my car, waiting for Kelly and Blake to join. It was already morning and my day wasn't going as I planned it to go.
Breakfast was physically painful to attend. My dad kept on cracking jokes that didn't match the mood, but I was forced to let out a chuckle every time and my mom shared her secret ingredient she used in her apple pie.
Once that was over, I gladly got out of my chair and went to my room to change, but I felt too lazy, so I just decided to go with what I wore after shower. A pink tank top matched with a pair of black leggings.
"Alright, start the ride." Kelly's chripy voice brought my back on earth. I borrowed my dad's car. All the three of us were arriving in our own vehicles.
Today was supposed to be a day of victory and happiness but it felt like it was cursed and doomed.
"What's going on with you?" Kelly signed and gave me a stern look. "And before you say nothing, I saw you during breakfast. You looked like someone else close to you died."
"Jordan is in jail." I spoke.
"What for?" She rose a brow.
"Drugs." I stated.
"But his gang wasn't involved in the drug supplying business." Blake said, entering the back seat. "I had to ask him what kind of business his gang did and that wasn't it."
"I know. I know. That's why it makes it more suspicious and hard to digest." I whined and banged my head on the steering wheel.
Kelly looked at my despair and announced the change of plans.
"Blake you go to the station where they are holding Jordan and get us permission to speak with him. I'll go to Picasso with Valerie."
I gave her a enthusiastic smile and engulfed her in a suffocation embrace.
"Thank you so so much."
The drive to Picasso was much better. I felt the happiness I was supposed to feel today.
Brianna had already arrived and was leaning on the wall next to the entrance.
I parked the car carefully and walked towards her with a sympathetic smile.
"I heard about Jordan, is he going to be okay?" She expressed her worry.
"We are seeing him after this. Blake's has gone to the station." I gave her a hug and informed.
"Here's what we are going to do, ladies. The two of you get the booth. Scan the restaurant and see if you find anybody even remotely suspicious to be killer. I will seat away from you'll and keep and eye around. Make sure you read the note loudly and keep it there. Don't take it with you." Kelly said.
We both gave her a nod and then looked each other before entering the busy place.
We selected the booth closer to the door and looked around as Kelly instructed.
Two old couple were talking to each other, their hands intertwined and a smile on their face.
A man with a cotton jacket and a cap was sipping on his root-beer. His face was staring at the phone screen, his fingers typing aggressively.
Then there were the people in the kitchen, Carl and the other waiters. I didn't really suspect any of them, but I kept a watch on every one of them.
"Girls." Carl smiled as he walked in our direction. "What can I get you?"
"A strawberry milkshake for me." I ordered.
"A kale smoothie for me." Brianna said.
After Carl left us, we both sat in silence. Lenny hadn't showed up yet and it began to worry me.
"Where is Lenny?" Brianna spoke.
"I have zero idea." I said.
Just as if he knew we were talking about him, Brianna's phone rang and showed his caller ID.
"Where are you, dude?" She whisper-yelled.
"I can't show up. I got held up at the garage. The two of you will have to carry on without me." He said on speaker.
"Are you kidding me?" I asked.
"Sorry Val."
Brianna disconnected the phone abruptly and gave me an appalled look.
I reciprocated the same emotions and put my head down on the table.
My head was aching with the loss of sleep and the constant overthinking.
"Do you think the killer framed Jordan?" Brianna curiously asked me. "Because I won't be surprised if they did."
"Honestly Bri, I have no idea. But I'm so fucking tired and it's not the kind of tired when I want to give up, but I'm just to sick of these games. Why can't the person just reveal himself!" My voice was low and evident of exhaustion.
"I know. There were four of us, then a member even increased, but now it's just us two. Derek and Lenny at held up at work and Jordan's behind the bars." She said and I just nodded, rubbing my eyes.
Carl came up with our drinks and placed them in front of us.
"I couldn't help but overhear the conversation. Lenny just showed up at the restaurant and ordered his lunch. He left just a minute before you two showed up." Carl informed us.
"He was?" Brianna asked again, just to confirm.
"Yes," He answered.
I took a long sip of my milkshake and let myself a brain freeze.
Lenny wouldn't lie to us. He told me about Jordan with zero hesitation, even when he promised Jordan secrecy on that matter.
But then a glass shattered in front of me and reality caught up. I realised all the times when he hid behind a facade or didn't open up his mouth about Rosalind.
The more I thought about it, the more it creeped me out.
"Let's just great this over with." I said and opened up the note.
"Dear Killer,
It's us, the people you're taking for granted. If you want us to be quiet about these notes and the petty games you are playing, then show your true face tomorrow at the abandoned kindergarten. It's a perfect place for you and for us. If you won't show up, we all will feel forced to turn you in."
"Did you write it? It's ominous." Brianna smiled.
"What can I say? I've got skills." I smugly said and flipped my hair.
"Do you feel better?" She asked.
"Eh, I just mocked the killer, I feel something nice alright." I replied and she let out a heart laughter.
Once we were done, we asked for the bill and told Carl to not take this note or throw it around. Someone was going to pick it up and he didn't have to meddle in it.
Like a darling he was, he just nodded in agreement.
I stood by the door and looked at the booth we previously sat in. All of us were just getting over that fact that Rosalind passed away and that was also when we all met Jordan for the first time.
A wave of nostalgia hit me and a small glow brightened my dull face.
Kelly tapped me shoulder and gestured me towards her hand, which was holding the door open for me.
"Blake is waiting for us at the station." Kelly looked at her phone and informed me.
"Awesome. Bri, you coming?"
"Nah. I have to go pack." She nonchalantly mentioned.
"Pack what? Where are you going?"
"Back to the city. But it's only for a week. I have to go and record a song." She said.
"But tomorrow we are supposed to meet the killer at our rendezvous!" I reminded her.
"I know, but this was decided before we came up with that plan. Plus, this is my career..." Her voice trailed off as she realised how selfish it sounded.
"Fine. I'll take Kelly and Blake and go." I patted her back.
After saying our goodbyes, we got in the car and I blasted the music through the tape. I was feeling much optimistic.
Once we reached, we were greeted by Blake and a officer who just nodded his head at Kelly who copied the same action.
The officer led the three of us in a room where Jordan was sitting, fidgeting with his hands and staring coldly at the table.
"You know you fiddle when you're scared?" I asked, making him look at me. An emotion was surprise and joy passed his face as he got up to hug me.
I wrapped my arms around me and closed my eyes to sink up the warmth.
"I just thought it was going to be Blake and Kelly." He whispered, holding me tighter.
"How could I not come and meet you?!" I laughed.
Once we were done, both of us sat in front of each other in utter silence.
"What happened Jordan?" I questioned.
"William came up with a plan to plant drugs in our rival gang's lair. It was supposed to be very quiet. But when before I could leave the bar, cops surrounded me and found drugs on me." He explained.
"So, someone snitched on you?" I raised a brow. "Aren't gang members supposed to be loyal to each other?"
"I don't even think Will came up with the idea. He hated drugs. He strongly opposed them. I have no idea what caused a change of his mind." He shrugged. "God, this is so messed up."
"How do we get you out?" I asked.
"Prove that they were planted in my jacket. But that's impossible." He chuckled.
"We'll do it." I confidently spoke. "Why would it be impossible? I'll go to the bar with Blake and see what we can do. I'll get you out of here."
"You're determined, aren't you?"
"Brianna is going to the city tomorrow. Lenny is caught up in work. Derek is almost in the same situation. It's just me that is left. I'm going to the abandoned house too, I need to know who the killer is. I feel so useless. It feels like I'm aware of problems and yet I can't do anything about them."
"Hey," Blake placed his hand on top of mine and gave me a small squeeze. "You're not useless, okay? You kept us together. You're the glue of our posse."
"Brianna would have said orange doesn't suit you if she were here."
Jordan laughed out loud and I joined him. The security and the guard who brought me to the room both snapped their heads in our direction.
"Take Lenny tomorrow when you go. Force him. Also, carry a weapon and make sure Blake and Kelly are close to you guys." He instructed.
"I- I'm not sure if I want Lenny's company." I stated.
"Why?"
I met my gaze with his, removed my hands from under his hands and started fiddling with the hem of my shirt.
"I don't know how to say this and I'm not even sure if it's true, but it's just an unsettling feeling in my gut. I sh-"
"What is it?"
