Chapter 9: UNREQUITED LOVE
"Unrequited love does not die. It's only beaten down to a secret place where it hides curled and wounded." ~Elle Newmark

It was a fact universally acknowledged that Daisy Atkins was in love with her best friend, Ronnie Coleman. Unfortunately for Daisy, Ronnie seemed to love everyone else but her. He had failed to take the copious hints Daisy had been dropping for the past year ever since she had figured out that she had feelings for her best friend.
Now Daisy wished that things could go back to how they were when they were younger. When she didn't shudder whenever Ronnie hugged or touched her, when she didn't get lost in Ronnie's steely grey eyes whenever he talked and when she didn't burn with jealousy everytime Ronnie fucked other women. This, however, was exactly what she was doing now at three in the morning.
Daisy sat in the driver's seat of her new red Toyota Camry that was parked next to a creepy sprawling forest. Daisy was trying in vain to ignore the cacophony of moans and groans that wafted off the back seat. Ronnie was fucking his new whore of the week while Daisy was trying her best not to cry.
"Ohhh fuck Ray." The bimbo moaned and a new wave of tears stung Daisy's rocky brown eyes. She didn't even know Ronnie's name and yet she was the one who got to have him. How unfair could the world be to her? It had already taken her brother and mother in a fatal accident that had left her father comatose two years ago and now it wanted to take her love away too?
"I love you so much Natasha." Ronnie moaned and Daisy sniffled. Her grip on the steering wheel became punishing. She coughed to cover up the tears that now streaked her cheeks. How useless could she get?
It seems they were done because her ears were no longer being assaulted by their moans and purrs. She made the mistake of turning her head to check and what she saw broke her heart into a million little pieces. All her hopes for a picture perfect life with Ronnie Coleman were dashed. No more plans for a puffy wedding dress and certainly no more white picket fence with three adorable little kids.
Daisy stared in mute horror at the light reflecting off of Ronnie's class ring on that whore's finger. Daisy's mind was already conjuring up psychopathic thoughts. She was now considering how easy it was to hide two bodies in the sprawling forest. It would be the perfect crime. No witnesses and no prints. The forest would be her accomplice. She would do it right and no one would be the wiser.
Daisy tried to think of the bright side before she ended up savouring the screams of her best friend and his new lover. This was the eye opener that she needed to finally focus on college. She would study hard and become the most successful lawyer the state of Boston had ever seen. Daisy would be the next Marcie Diggs. She had learnt her lesson. Love only brought pain.
Daisy still wanted to scream. "Oh fuck it." She muttered and pushed open the car door and took off at a brisk pace towards the sprawling forest. Against her better judgement, she entered deeper into the said forest and ignored Ronnie's frantic calls. Her love was unrequited and she knew when she was not wanted.
The cacophony of chirping crickets and croaking frogs was a welcome respite from the sounds of Ronnie's incessant moans. The sky was falling in a gentle mist and this helped in concealing the tears that were flowing down her cheeks unchecked. Why was she so fucking unlucky? Her six inch heels kept sinking in the soggy soils of the forest and she decided to remove them and hold them in her hands. Her pink shirt stuck to her body like a second skin and her skirt was dripping water down her legs but she soldiered on. She would do anything to get away from Ronnie who was now gaining on her.
Daisy's teeth chattered when the autumn winds blew against her petite frame and she instantly regretted her choice of clothing. She had literally thrown whatever she could find in the dark of her room and escaped the safety of her aunt's house when Ronnie had called. What a fool she had been! Now here she was sauntering around barefoot in a forest like a lioness.
Daisy wiggled her toes in the mud and smiled like a child when the mud oozed out from in between her toes. She looked up and enjoyed the feel of the rain pelting her face. Daisy screamed at the forest until her voice turned hoarse and she felt good. She opened her mouth to scream again and a hand clamped down her lips making her drop her shoes. Daisy immediately began to fight. She tried to elbow her attacker but her blow was deflected. Daisy succeeded in stabbing her foot into her attacker's instep and a wolf- like howl rewarded her efforts.
"Geez Daisy, who taught you to fight like that?" Daisy wiggled free of her best friend's grip and punched him square in the jaw. "Ow." He screamed.
"Don't you fucking dare to do that again." Daisy quipped and an obscene pleasure pulsed through Daisy's body when she saw Ronnie in pain. She wanted to make Ronnie suffer as much as she had for the past year. Daisy clenched her fist so that she could sock him in the gut but Ronnie held her hand.
"What the hell is wrong with you Daisy. You have never been like this. Is it because of the class ring? I can get it back if you want?"
Daisy's anger had reached volcanic level. Her breathing had become laboured and she was not drawing in enough air. Was this what a stroke felt like?
"It's not only about the fucking class ring. It's about everything else. I love you Ronnie and I have been trying to show you that for the past year but you just don't seem to get it do you? It's been hard hearing you make snide comments on random girls' asses. Its been hard watching you play around with all these girls while I remain just your friend, your confidant. I don't want to remain just your friend anymore."
Ronnie was uncharacteristically speechless. There was nothing to say. He wasn't stupid. He had noticed the hints she'd been dropping. The reason he had pretended to be oblivious was because he was scared that a relationship with Daisy would ruin their age-long friendship and that would leave him all alone. Daisy was the only pure thing in his life. So Ronnie had tried to fuck away his feelings and he had failed miserably.
Daisy swayed on her feet and latched onto the lapels of Ronnie's red blazer for support. This close she could smell his enchanting cologne. She looked into his steely grey eyes and she was entranced. So much for focusing on college and becoming the most successful lawyer in the state of Boston. Against her better judgement, Daisy stood up on her toes and kissed him. Ronnie stiffened but it didn't take long before he took over the kiss. His seeking tongue entered her mouth and Daisy hastily broke away. Her cheeks flamed crimson and she realized that her anger was misdirected. Daisy wasn't angry at Ronnie. She was angry at herself for being so stupid.
"Daisy-" Ronnie tried.
"Oh fuck you too Ronnie." Daisy pushed Ronnie away and took off at a jog. Pine cones and thorns dug into her feet but she didn't feel it. She was impervious to physical pain. The pain in her heart was much stronger. Daisy could hear Ronnie running after her.
"Stop following me." Daisy screamed. She picked up the nearest stick she could find and flung it at him. She continued running but froze in her tracks when she heard the urgent tone in Ronnie's voice.
"Daisy, where did you get the stick you threw at me?" Ronnie asked once she'd stopped.
"How is that important? I picked it from the ground." Daisy shouted back.
"Look at this stick Daisy. Have you ever seen a stick this smooth and hard." Ronnie was in nerd mode. He was a Biology major. Daisy was sure he would make a great doctor someday. Daisy was getting ready to argue when she finally made the connection. With shaking hands, she pulled out her phone and turned on the flashlight which she directed at the "stick". Ronnie confirmed what her eyes were seeing.
"This is a bone, Daisy and judging from the length and appearance, this is most certainly a human femur bone."
Daisy took a giant step back as if to distance herself from the bone and what it symbolized but her feet lost traction on the soggy soil and she slipped into a gulley. Daisy no longer needed to distance herself from the bone anymore because now she was surrounded by an assortment of bones. Skulls, femurs, tibias and a variety of vertebrae encompassed her body. Something crawled over her leg and she screamed.
