Foreword
This novel titled “THE PAUPER” is the first ever known to me to be published on prose by this young, promising and amiable author, Pastor Nwoko, Solomon. Ikechukwu. There are many stories on attitudes and ethics in our society today, but none has been so specific and at the same time very elaborate in the area of attitudinal behaviour and relationships in our homes and the society, and with God our Creator.
An attempt is made to excite interest on the peculiar problems of the youths and teenagers in our homes and society at large. It also x-rays some of the ills in our society today and narrated the extent some parents can go in search of children for their joy of parenthood to by complete.
I have no doubt that both the adult readers; the youths and teenagers in particular will find this treasure mine, very useful tool in character molding, guidance and attitudinal change in our God-given children.
I strongly recommend this novel to our youths and teenagers; and anyone who likes reading novels. It is straight forward; easy to read and understand, yet at the same time goes into reforming our homes and the society at a reasonable extent.

THE PAUPER
INTRODUCTION
The Pauper was written during my SS 1. Though it is my first published work, it was not my first written work. I started my first written work in JSS 3 which is titled “The Wisdom of God” (still to be completed). The work was left uncompleted for some reasons I may not explain in this paper. But during my SS 1-2006/2007, I started and completed The Pauper and it was first published in April 2010 during my first year, in the higher institution; by Charlesson Publishers 1 Adelabu Street Umuahia Abia State.
Now, this captivating and thrilling story has come out again in a more interesting manner with two additional chapters and glossary. It has now passed through series of thorough editing and finishing touches, which made it academic, moral and entertaining; qualify enough to educate people of various levels and fields of life.
It is my earnest desire that this novel (prose) will actualize the aim for which it is written; which is, to educate people especially, the youths and teenagers (children not excluded) on how to make right choices as to live good life that will be pleasing to God; a life free from curse, negative pain, blame, pitiable pessimism and regrettable lugubrious.
I am also available for the following:

PREFACE
The Pauper is a novel that aims at exposing some of the ugly characters that are seen in most of our homes and schools (mainly universities) today. It is also a book that tells the painful hurdles parents could go through in search of children. It also contains the negligent attitude many show towards God their creator.
For close to a decade in my humble life, I have viewed most of the parents/children relationships, teachers/students relationships, and God/human relationships; from my personal life experience, I decided to make a study. As I took a thorough photographical and analytical study of this, I conceived a massage. After considering the best way to convey this massage in order to get the proper and careful attention of my readers (mainly youths/teenagers), I decided to put it down in the form of a story (novel).
This novel though fiction; conveys non-fictional truths in our world today and also proffers better solutions to it. It is an interesting story that one can’t stop touring until the last page is consumed. It is a story that begins in tragedy but had a happy ending.
Finally, I remain grateful to all my teachers during my secondary school days, at Secondary Technical School Afaraukwu, Umuahia Abia State of Nigeria; mainly my literature teacher-Mrs. Enwere C. N. who exposed me to literature and built my interest in it.
I hope that God through this novel will heal and bring honeous relationships among parents and their children, teachers and their students and above all, God and humanity.

CHAPTER ONE
The world can be likened to an empty house, a lonely road, which echoes in reply whatever thing that is said in it. When there is a shout in an empty house or a lonely road, one could hear the replying echo of the shout. The world can also be likened to throwing a cricket ball on the wall and having the cricket ball bouncing back to the person that threw it. The world also is like a farm land or field which yields exactly the crop or seed planted in it.
Mr. Johnson came back from his office with a great joy, smiling face and with much ebullience. The joy and excitement that confronted him was the news that his long awaited container that is worth millions of Naira had finally arrived. Mr. Johnson was overwhelmed with joy that he quickly locked up his office and put the care of his company in the hands of his manager. However, bitterness and sorrow came in the midst of his excitement and shattered his joy. Mr. Johnson met his lovely wife sobbing in emotional pain as she was clothed with river of tears, and shivering like one that her temperature had gone high up to 41ºc. Johnson became extremely scared and threw away his suit case and ran toward his wife and grabbed her as he held her firmly like one dragging his beloved wife with death. Holding Juliet his wife for some minutes, Johnson remembered to ask her what her problem was.
“Juliet” Johnson called
“What is the problem?
What is the matter with you?
Do you want to kill yourself so that you will leave me a widower
and a lonely man who will live to mourn his beloved wife all the days of his life?
Juliet was still crying and sobbing as though she did not hear what her husband said.
“Honey” Johnson started again
“Please tell me what the problem is.
Why have you decided to kill my joy and happiness
with your unbearable tears; honey why?”
“Darling” Juliet started
“Just look at me, look at me darling.
How many years is our marriage? How long have we been married?
Fifteen years, fifteen whole years darling, no child, not even one.
And as you know, I was a virgin when you met me;
I knew no man except you and you knew it; but why me?
Why is this happening to me?
We have gone to many doctors and have visited many hospitals,
they kept saying that nothing was wrong with both of us
and our pastor kept saying,
‘it is well, have hope in God, He will do it in His own appointed time.’
But how long will this continue happening to me?
How long will I keep having hope?
And how long will the time of God last?
Darling, honestly, I am tired. I can’t continue living like this.
Something has to be done about this.” Juliet concluded.
“Honey” Johnson called
“Please don’t kill yourself because of a child.
I am your husband; I should be the one complaining not you
The truth is, I love you and that settles it, the issue of not having any child
cannot come between me and my love for you, I love you and I will
Keep on loving you no matter what. I will never marry any other woman
and I want to assure you that one day, you will be a mother.
Please be strong and live for me, I love you”
After cheering his wife up, Mr. Johnson remembered the good news that brought him home from the office of which the joy could not let him stay in the office till the closing hour.
“A…ha…!” Johnson exclaimed
“That reminds me. Honey guess what”
The sorrowful tears of Juliet as a result of her childlessness put her into the state of emotional and mental discombobulation and made her unable to guess anything; she was also not in the mood of guessing anything at all.
“Do you remember the container I told you about?
The one I said that is worth millions of Naira?” Johnson asked
“Yes! Yes!!”
Juliet replied with a smiling face and a gladden mind, ready to jump to her feet.
“I got news this afternoon that it has finally arrived” Johnson said.
“E…he…e…! Thank God oh!
Darling do you remember to inform our pastor?” Juliet asked
“Of course I did, the moment I got the news
I called him straight away with my phone;
and he was extremely happy” Johnson replied
“Oh! Honey, this calls for celebration. Where do you think will be a good venue
to celebrate this honey?” Johnson asked
Mr. Johnson was dismayed over the silence of his wife to his question, and became sad when he realized that the silence of his wife was as a result that she was crying and sobbing again.
“Oh! Honey”, he exclaimed
“What is it again? Why are you crying again?”
Juliet who was in the midst of joy as a result of the good news, suddenly bust into sorrowful cry and put up a saddened face. The sobbing of Juliet destroyed the happiness and the gladness of Johnson. To him, it was a situational irony, in the sense that he was expecting his wife to be happy and to express her happiness with a smiling face and may be with a shout, but ironically, she began to cry bitterly with a sad face. Responding to the question of her husband, Juliet said;
“Darling” She called
“This is what I have been talking about.
All these wealth that God is giving to us,
who will inherit it? Who are we going to leave it for” She concluded.
“Honey” Johnson called
“Do you love me?” He asked.
“Why are you asking me that type of question darling?” Juliet asked
“You know that I really love you.
I have not loved any other man in my life except you darling” She said
“If this is really the truth, please I beg you, stop crying.
There is nothing that takes away my peace and joy like your tears.
I may endure anything in this life; even if my container sinks or is seized,
or if something worse than that happens, I may endure.
But I am always out of myself whenever I see you in pains dropping tears”.
Johnson pleaded.
“Darling, I love you so much, and I thank God who gave you to me as my lovely husband. I promise, I will not cry again.” Juliet promised
Mr. Johnson and his wife Juliet had been married for about fifteen years without a single child. Johnson does not bother much, but Juliet always spend most of her days in sorrow and tears. Juliet had ever dreamed seeing herself carrying a baby as her own. Whenever she moved around and saw mothers playing or moving around with their children, it would always put her in the state of sorrowful tears. It would always be a moment to ask God rhetorical questions,
“Why me? What have I done ?
Oh God! When will you remember me?
And give me at least a child” She would always ask.
It came to a point that she was tempted to start regretting of being a virgin before her marriage. Juliet was desperately looking forward to the joy of her motherhood. Though she was married into a home of wealth and of peace, to a man that loved her like Jesus loved the Church, her joy was still incomplete.
“It is even better that I had been pregnant and had miscarriage,
At least, that will console me and convinced me that I am okay and a real woman.
Then, I will have the hope of being a future mother.
But I haven’t had any experience of motherhood
to assure me of my chances of having a child. God please help me”.
This was the constant self contemplation of Juliet. But the last encounter she had with her husband gave her the hope of being a mother and a sense of belonging.
CHAPTER TWO
Few weeks later
Johnson came back from his office and called his wife as he usually did whenever he returned from work.
“Honey! I am home. Honey I am home! Where are you?” Johnson asked.
When Johnson beheld the countenance and facial appearance of his wife, he was highly dismayed and puzzled as he exclaimed,
“Jesus! Honey what is wrong with you? Why is your face like that?
You look too dull; this is not the smart wife I used to know,
Please tell me, what is the matter?” He asked
Juliet looked very dull like one that had been starved for weeks and also involved in a serious hard lobour.
“Darling, I have not been feeling fine for some weeks now.” Juliet replied.
“What! Honey since when?
Have you seen your doctor? Or em… or, have you called her on phone
if you don’t have time to go to her office?” Johnson demanded.
“Actually darling, I have not contacted my doctor;
I never took the little illness serious” Juliet replied
“Honey, how could you? How could you have hidden such a thing
from me honey? For how long have you been sick my dear?” Johnson asked
“Darling, it has been three weeks precisely” Juliet replied.
“Three what? Please honey do you want to kill yourself?” Johnson asked
“For the past three weeks you have not considered consulting your doctor
Or even telling me?” He concluded
“I’m sorry darling; I thought it was just a minor feeling” Juliet replied.
“Honey” Johnson continued
“We are going to see the doctor to night, dress up let’s go” Johnson demanded.
“Darling please come in; take your bath, have your meal and rest,
I am alright; tomorrow I will see the doctor” Juliet said.
“Honey, can you sleep well tonight? You look very dull and weak,
I… I… I mean you are not looking good, are you sure you can?”
Johnson was interrupted by his wife.
“Darling, don’t mind my face and appearance,
I am okay and I will sleep very well this night
as long as you will be by my side.”
Juliet interrupted. The next morning, Johnson had prepared to go to the office and his wife called him,
“Darling, please you will take me to the hospital;
I am not in the mood of driving this morning.” Juliet pleaded.
“That is ok by me; but honey how will you come back,
this was why I wanted to employ drivers, but you refused.”
Johnson complained.
“Darling, forget about this drivers of a thing, I will find my way back.
Don’t worry yourself too much about me.” Juliet replied.
“Please, I don’t want anything to happen to you” Johnson said.
“Nothing will happen to me darling” Juliet assured.
“Well, I say Amen to that honey” Johnson agreed.
After the morning breakfast, Johnson left for office with his wife in one of his cars. He dropped his wife at the hospital to see her doctor. After some minutes of dialogue between the doctor and Juliet, medical checkup was conducted on her. Few hours later, Johnson came back, refusing to knock or alerting his wife by calling honey as usual. He really wanted to amaze his wife in order to make her happy. But to his greatest surprise, he saw his ever-crying and sobbing wife, shinning and smiling with a bright face as bright as the morning sun. She was at the dining room sitting on the dining chair beside the dining table; the table was decorated with different kinds of edible things well garnished. She prepared them and was waiting happily and anxiously for her husband. When Juliet saw her husband, she smiles the more even to the point of laughing. Full of surprises, Johnson stood still for some moment gaping at his wife.
“My dear husband (Juliet called), my darling
don’t be amazed of what you are seeing.
It is I, Juliet your darling wife. Come and have sit,
I set this table and all these for you”. Juliet said.
“Honey, what on earth happened that made you to be this happy?
I can’t wait to hear the exciting story. Please tell me honey, what is it?”
Johnson asked
“Welcome my darling; let me help you to remove your suit,
And after that I will help you also to keep your suit case
and you will sit quietly and enjoy your meal.” Juliet replied.
Johnson sat down highly discombobulated at the amazing attitude of his wife, though positively, but very strange. Juliet on the other hand, helped her husband to remove his suit and also collected his suit case as she happily left for where it is used to be kept. After keeping them, Juliet returned ebulliently with bright and smiling face looking more pulchritude to meet with her husband. After few seconds Juliet returned with her smiling face, Johnson who was wedded with the curiosity and anxiety to know the brain behind his wife’s happiness broke the silent moment between him and his wife by asking her again.
“Now you have kept my suit and suit case,
can you now please tell me the reason you are this happy?” Johnson asked.
“My darling, sit down first, don’t be in a hurry. Eat,
I prepared these for you. It is a moment of joy”. Juliet said.
Mr. Johnson and his wife were busy eating. After they had eaten for some couple of minutes, Juliet looked at the anxious and humorous face of her husband and burst into laughter. Johnson who had realized that his wife had understood how curious he was to know her reason of being happy said to her.
“Honey, please tell me what the news is.
You said I should first sit down, I am sitting; you said I should eat,
look at me eating. Having obeyed all your commands, so tell me,
what stops you from telling me the exhilarating story so that
I can share the joy with you?” Johnson said.
“Okay my darling, I will tell you everything.
Today, as you dropped me to see my doctor, I went inside her office,
I told her how I was feeling; she carried out some medical tests on me,
and she confirmed that I am three weeks pregnant” Juliet said
“What! You mean you are three weeks what? (Johnson was amazed)
Oh my good God! This is unbelievable, very much amazing.
Come on honey, please tell me, are you serious?
I mean, do you really mean what you have just said or do you want to flatter me?”
Johnson asked.
“Darling, (Juliet called) have I told you lies before?
If I should start now to lie to you,
do you think I will lie with the issue of child or pregnancy?” She asked.
“Honey you see, Pastor Gideon is a true man of God.
He kept on telling us, ‘don’t worry, God will do it at His own time.’
Just as he said, and as we can see, it has come to pass” Johnson said.
“Oh! Darling, it is wonderful.
I can’t stop praising and thanking God for His kind remembrance.
Now I believe I am a complete woman” Juliet said.
“I am glad you now know and believe.
That reminds me, please honey get me my phone let’s call the pastor”
Johnson said.
CHAPTER THREE
NINE MONTHS LATER
Mr. Johnson has an important meeting that may lead to his business and financial down fall if he fails to attend. At the night that will commence the day of the meeting, Juliet was highly disturbed. It was as though her baby wanted to come out. Johnson did not mind the time of the night (which was around 10:30pm) rather he helped his wife into his car and drove her to the hospital. The hospital was their family hospital and the doctors-Dr. (Mrs.) Frank and Dr. Kevin who were in charge of the hospital were their family doctors. As a result of that, special attention was given to Juliet. The nurses at the instruction of the doctors rushed Juliet to the best labour room. The doctor-Mrs. Frank attended to her instantaneously and conducted medical tests on her. After a while, she discovers that Juliet will not have her baby that night. Mrs. Frank left the labour room to her office; on her way to her office, Johnson met her and said.
“Doctor, please tell me, how is she?
I mean, how is my wife? Please doctor,
I will pay any amount as long as my wife and baby are alive” Johnson said.
“Come down, (the doctor told him) nothing will happen to her.
But the only thing is that she will not deliver her baby to night.
Meanwhile, she wants to see you,
so you can go and know why she is in need of you” The doctor said.
“Alright doctor, thank you very much and God bless you” Johnson replied.
“You are welcome Mr. Johnson.” The doctor said.
Mr. Johnson left for the labour room where his wife was to see how she was doing and why she wanted to see him.
“Honey, how are you doing?” Johnson asked.
“I think, I am doing fine darling, but it is just that…” Juliet was interrupted.
“The doctor said you wanted to see me.
That was why I had to rush to make sure all is well with you.
What is the problem honey?” Johnson interrupted.
“Yes darling, the doctor said that I will not deliver my baby this night” Juliet said.
Oh! That, I know that already honey, the doctor had told me that also.
So I will be spending the night here with you” Johnson said.
“No darling, have you forgotten?
You have important meeting to attend tomorrow morning.
Therefore I will advise you to go home and eat, take your bath
and have enough sleep so that you will have the strength to drive your car. Whenever I deliver, I will call you on phone
so that after the meeting you can come and see me
before your mother and mine arrive.” Juliet advised
“Yes, I think you have a very good point in what you’ve just said.
Well, may God be with you and help you to deliver in peace like the Hebrew women in Jesus Name” Johnson prayed.
“Amen my darling” Juliet agreed.
“I will be leaving honey” Johnson said.
“Very well then, good night my dear husband” Juliet said.
“Good night my beloved wife” Johnson replied.
Juliet delivered at 12:45am; her baby was a bouncing baby boy. From 12:45am that Juliet delivered her baby, she was unconscious till 8:30am. The moment she regained consciousness, the first thing she did was to reach out for her phone and called her husband. By this time, Johnson was already at the meeting rendezvous and the meeting had already commenced. When the savory news got to the knowledge of Johnson, he forgot that he was in the midst of people, like an excited mad man, he jumped up to his feet and embraced his best friend Mr. Godwin who was also sitting next to him. The house was in state of turmoil, only Mr. Godwin could guess what had happened.
“Mr. Johnson, what is it that made you interrupt our discussion
in this meeting, please tell us, we will like to know. My people, abi no be so…?” The chairman asked
“Na so…o..!” The house replied.
“My wife, (Johnson started) I mean my Juliet, after fifteen good years of marriage
has given birth to a bouncing baby boy” Johnson said happily.
“What!” Everybody shouted in amazement.
“We must celebrate this wonderful good news” Mr. Godwin said.
“Surely, in a big and sumptuous way” Johnson replied.
After the joyful noise, the meeting continued. Looking at Mr. Johnson, one could see lucidly that he was only body present in the meeting, but his mind and spirit were totally absent from the meeting venue; and are right with his wife and the unseen baby. Taking cognizance of this, the chairman said to Johnson.
“Mr. Johnson, I know that if we leave you here,
your entire mind will be to see your new baby and your lovely wife;
and all we will be discussing will not have any hold in your mind.
Therefore, we will permit you to go now and see your wife and son.
Mr. Godwin will bring to you the details of what we will discuss.
But, don’t forget that we will be expecting you to call us for the celebration.”
The chairman concluded.
“Thank you very much Mr. Chairman;
I am grateful to you all for your kindness to me and my family.
I will do exactly as you have said my honorable chairman”. Johnson assured.
Mr. Johnson with inestimable joy jumped into his car and drove into the middle of the road and was on a high speed. As he was driving, his thought was totally on his new baby boy and lovely wife; from the thought of his wife and son, he moved his thought on how expensive the celebration was going to be. He made up his mind to put in huge amount of money in celebrating his wife and new born baby boy. As he was driving on a high speed, his mind was also roaming about in the thought of the good news. As his mind was lost in thought, Mr. Johnson forgot that he was not the only driver on the road; he was not fully concentrating on his driving because of the too much thinking about his wife and son, and as a result, he could not notice that there was a big lorry approaching from the other lane of the road on a high speed as well. The lorry driver did not notice on time that Johnson’s car was coming, before both drivers could know what was happening, they had collided face to face with each other. The lorry driver sustained a serious injury, but Mr. Johnson was at the point of death; people gathered and rushed them to the hospital. Surprisingly the hospital happens to be their family hospital, the same place Juliet was admitted. The doctor-Dr. Kevin being his family doctor tried all he could to save his life, but all was to no avail. What a tragic occurrence? What becomes of Juliet his lovely wife and the new born baby he had ever longed to see? Juliet had waited for her darling husband and became worried why her lovely husband who cannot stay without her had not come to visit her and the new baby he had ever wanted to see and carry. The doctors agreed to hide the incident from Juliet for a while so that she won’t develop metal or psychological problems. But when they could no longer hide the incident, they let the cat out of the bag to Juliet; being fully aware that no matter how it rains, the mountain cannot be washed away. But notwithstanding, the obnoxious news drew Juliet closer to the mouth of the angry and hungry grave to be interned inimically by the ferocious death, but God who knew it was not her time, and who commands and controls death rebuked death and rescued her from its strike and brought her back to the land of the living. Juliet who was supposed to be in euphoric mood because of the birth of her new bouncing baby boy after fifteen whole years of childlessness was highly in the state of dysphoric when the news of her husband’s death was disclosed to her. Juliet mourned her husband for many years and refused to be consoled.
CHAPTER FOUR
NINE YEARS LATER
Junior grew up to become an intelligent boy; his performance in the primary school was the exciting discussion of his teachers. At the age of nine he was already in his primary six, preparing to sit for common entrance examination. Junior heard about the story of his father from his mother, he never met his father to have a father-son interaction and relationship. He wished he had met his father that his mother had talked a lot about and whom he had equally heard about from people who claimed to be his father’s friends, business partners and associates. Juliet single handedly trained her son up; from crèche to university level. Throughout the primary and secondary school days of Emmanuel Johnson Junior, he remained a good domestic boy. The honeous and gorgeous attitude of Junior made his mother not to miss her husband as she does before; Junior’s good behaviour made Juliet to almost forget her husband’s death. Looking at Junior and relating with him, Juliet feels as though she was looking at her husband whom Junior was a carbon copy, both in his physiology, relational wise and behaviour. Throughout his primary and secondary school days, Junior maintained first position; during his secondary school days, his excellent performance made his principal, vice and his teachers to fall in love with him; in his SS3, he became the school senior prefect. Everything was moving fine with Junior and his mother until his second year in the university when he met Sandra.
NINETEEN YEARS LATER
Junior grew innocently without the knowledge of any form of evil; this was because Juliet his mother took time to expatiate, expose and explained to him their belief in God, spiritual and physical integrity and their good family background. Juliet told her son that God and his late father will not be happy with him if he turns away from God and let down the hope and trust they have in him. She made him understand that he was the hope of their family. Juliet promised her son Emmanuel Johnson Junior that she will do everything within her power to ensure he becomes somebody in life. The word Junior received from his mother rang as bell in his mind; he did keep it in his mind as vital information not to be forgotten. These words of advice were able to lead Junior aright throughout his primary and secondary school days. The advice also helped him scale through his first year in the university as a person of integrity and a gorgeous characterized student. How are the mighty falling? The down fall of Junior started when he embraced evil of immoral and violent life.
John was the room mate of Junior; he was a student who was acquainted with a rough, bloody and extremely immoral life. John was a known womanizer he always messed around with willing girls; he did not attend lectures, and whenever Junior went for lectures, John considered it an opportunity to go in with girls to mess up himself. This obnoxious and obscene life of John had always bordered Junior, especially when he came back from lectures and found John doing the unpleasant thing in their room with the un-puritan girls. It was actually the aim of John to lure Junior into living a bad, rough, bloody and especially immoral life; this could be the reason John did most of his unspeakable things when he sensed that Junior was around. John needed Junior to live such life in order that he may be able to introduce him into cultism. Junior did not show interest in messing up with girls, taking alcohol or Indian herm; John knew very well that getting Junior into joining cult meant introducing him into other bad lifestyles. So John was doing his best to make sure his dream came to pass, which will give him higher rank in their cult if he could get somebody of that caliber to the BBC brotherhood. When Junior entered into the university, he developed a nasty and problematic attitude. He ceased to attend any Christian gathering that has to do with the worship of God, and to justify himself, he equally did not attend parties. He had a good logic, though he applies it in an erroneous way. He would always quote,
“There is time for everything”
With this ideology, he built up a dogma that guided him; he believed that university was a place to study, come out with good certificate and become somebody in life; not a place of singing, preaching and praying to God as was usually done in the Church Service. Therefore he believed in studious life and never played with his studies. Consequent to his negligence to the gathering of the people of God, Junior lacked the person and power of the Holy Spirit of God; he also lacked the convincing word of God that can change a sinner. This was because he failed to take into cognizance the fact that a man without the Holy Spirit is a man without Christ and a man without Christ lacks the power of the Holy Spirit that makes the word of a man convicting and convincing to the souls of men. He also failed to understand the fact that a man without Christ and the Holy Spirit is a filthy rag before God irrespective of his self goodness and righteousness. When this immoral attitude of John became unbearable to Junior, he made up his mind one day to confront John. Though not knowing actually what to say, Junior decided to say something.
“You know John, sometimes I wonder why many students of our time today
have decided to assume frivolous attitude of life, especially in their studies.
And this is the reason why many of them are involved
in all sort of crimes and havoc causing behaviours.
John what kind of life do you think you are living?
Do you think you will be under your parents or those sponsoring you forever?
Why don’t you think for something reasonable for your life and do it
Instead of….”
Junior was interrupted as he tried to further his advice hoping John would consent. But to his dismay, John turned back and began to brain wash him with deceptive and plausible words; and tried letting Junior know the reason he should enjoy himself a little with girls and with other pleasurable things around him.
“All work without play makes Obi a dull boy” John would always tell Junior.
“Junior (he called), listen to me very carefully,
here is not primary or secondary school, here is not Church or mummy’s kitchen;
but here is big UNI…VER…SI…TY. Here is a battle field and a matter of life and death; the survival of the fittest. Bros, here is not a place of ‘Mugulity’
or a place of ‘righture’. My friend Junior, open your eyes and Shine them well, well. If you fail to deal with girls, they will deal mercilessly with you.
I don’t mean you should start up with too many girls as I am doing, but as a beginner, you can start up with one, yes, and a good one that will help you chase away other bad ones that have aimed at dealing badly with you. Or, if I may ask, since your first year in this campus have you not been disturbed by any girl?”
John asked.
“Ha…! Too many of them” Junior replied.
“O…ho! This is exactly what I am talking about (John continued), many of these girls are evil; I mean very bad and dangerous. This is how they will be coming
and disturbing you as long as they know you have no girl friend.
So my friend, this is the opportunity you have to enjoy yourself. They are bad, so
deal with them now, if you are through with one you can go for another. I tell you, you have nothing to lose; I mean, no be you go sufferam, but na dem go sufferam. I dey sure say you dey carry for mind and brain the things I dey download inside your memory sim card so?” John asked.
“John, I think there is meaning in what you’ve just said (Junior started).
I tell you the fact; many of these girls had been coming to me for friendship;
telling me how they like me, how I am everything they want in a man.
How they will do anything if I will give them chance in my life.
The last one that came to me said her name was Sandra,
she almost sang it as song how she loved me.
This Sandra was so serious and desperate that she came to me with tears,
I mean, real tears rolling down her eyes. The last time she came to me
with her unbearable tears, she even told me that she has not fallen in love
with any man. She said she had boldly and without regret refused many men
with their sumptuous gift for friendship. She said that from the first time
she set her eyes on me, that she instantly fell in love with me and that her feelings for me grows every day. She said she had try to find out the reason,
but she has been unable to hold hand on any; but that it could be because
of my gentleness, intelligence, my being gorgeous and moral;
in fact she said many things about me. I would have accepted her proposal,
but for the fact that God and my mother will not be happy with me,
I had to turn down her request”.
Junior concluded.
“Junior, forget about this mother being happy with me or not of a thing.
You are no longer a baby, you are now a man. Men make decision for themselves
not women making it for them. Even God Himself is a merciful God
even your Bible said it. How can the poor girl who has not fallen in love
with any man innocently fall in love with you and you turned down her precious love and you are here telling me ‘it is because of my mother’ and innocent God. What is killing? Tell me, what is murdering?
Do you think that murdering is only when you use gun to kill a man?
Don’t you know that you can equally kill by the way you talk to or relate
and treat people? Don’t you realize that if the way you talk to and relate
with people can kill their emotion, you have actually killed or murdered?
You better go out there and look for the poor girl before it is too late.
Junior that girl really loves you, go for her right now” John concluded.
“Well, I have her phone and hostel number; she gave them to me” Junior replied
“If that is the case then, why don’t you go out there and get her?” John said.
Junior slept over John’s advice and without a slight of blink, he decided to adhere to such unethical advice.
Junior started romantic friendship with Sandra, and shortly after, the relationship between Junior and Sandra became very intimate. Junior and Sandra became known in the campus as close friends in love with each other. With this relationship, Junior was introduced to different kinds of evil. Just as expected, the plan of John to get Junior into cultism was working out. As the relationship between Junior and Sandra continued, John realized that Junior had really fallen in love with Sandra and can do anything to retain her; he decided to use that opportunity to plan with his cult gangs on how to initiate Junior into cult. At the time the BBC Brotherhood used to gather for their meeting, John Presented the matter of Junior to the leader of the cult-King Kodo and the entire member of the cult.
“King Kodo, I have a word that I want to say;
it is a word of wisdom, a word of knowledge.” John said.
“What is it Johnbull? Say it we are all ears.” King Kodo replied.
“I have a new guy I would want us to initiate into this great family.
It is true that the guy is a brainaic and highly intelligent boy unlike us,
but he will be useful to us in terms of money.
The guy has cash, money, I mean ego.” John submitted.
“So what is your plan, how do we go about it? How easy do you think it will be” King Kodo asked.
“My honorable King Kodonko, (John called in praise of King Kodo)
You have asked a good question that needs a good answer.
There is one damsel that he loves so much; I mean he can do anything
to retain the babe. The chick’s name is Sandra, so my plan is that we beat him up
any time he is with the girl; and warn him never to near her again
or any other girl in the campus, unless he join the BBC Brotherhood.
By the time we beat him up several times and give him some skin pains
before his girl, and as his roommate, I will also mount fear and pressures on him
in the way of advice to belong, and I’m sure that we will get him
and he will submit.” John concluded.
“Fantastic! Lovely! (King Kodo exclaimed), John, you are a wise man.
This indeed is a word of wisdom and knowledge. Now listen to me guys,
this assignment will commence from tomorrow. Every man should watch
out, whenever he is with the girl, the so-called Sandra
in the open or secrete place, beacon on us so that he shall be disgraced.
Are you there? Have I made myself clear?” King Kodo asked.
CHAPTER FIVE
Junior went to lectures the next day, after some minutes of chatting among the students who were already in the lecture room, waiting for lectures; the biology lecturer came into the class room. After adjusting the sitting arrangement of the students and securing orderliness in the class room, the lecturer started his lectures.
“Last time we had lectures in this class,
I can remember vividly that I left unanswered question
which I promised to answer when next we meet;
and that is what I am going to do right now.
Can someone remind me what that question was?” The lecturer asked.
“Yes sir, the question was about the meaning and explanation of Catalyst.”
Sandra said.
“Alright, listen carefully all of you; if you care,
you can write down what I am saying.
Catalyst is simply a substance that alters the rate of a chemical reaction
but leaves itself unchanging at the end of the reaction.
The catalysts of biochemical reaction are the enzyme.”
The lecturer said as he was interrupted by another question.
“Please excuse me sir.” J. J. Kalu said.
“Yes, what is your problem?” The lecturer asked.
“Sir, what is this enzyme?
You always use this word in almost all
you have been discussing with us in your lectures.” J. J. Kalu asked.
“Oh! That? Alright; enzyme is a protein that,
in small amount, speeds up the rate of a biological reaction
without itself being used up in the reaction.
This means that this enzyme acts by binding with the substance.
An enzyme acts by binding with the substance involved in the reaction
and converting it into another substance.
An enzyme is relatively specific in the type of reaction it catalyses;
Hence, there are many different enzymes for the various biochemical reactions.
Is that understood?” Asked the lecturer
“Yes sir.” The students replied.
“Please sir, tell us the meaning of this biochemical of a thing.” Junior said.
“So at this level, you do not know what biochemical means?” The lecturer asked, but Junior kept quiet over the question.
“Now listen carefully. (The lecturer continued)
It has to do with the study of the chemical processes
and substance occurring in living things.
Another word for it is biochemistry. Is that understood?” The lecturer asked.
“Yes sir.” Junior answered.
“My time is almost up, there is no need introducing a new topic;
so let me have more question from you.
Any more questions?” The lecturer asked.
“Yes sir, I was reading one biological article and I came across the word
‘Coenzyme’, but the word was not explained in the article.
So sir, do you know what that means?” Isaac asked.
“Are you asking me if I know what the word means?
Or are you asking me to tell you what it means; so which of
the questions do you want me to answer?” The lecturer replied
“Oh! I am sorry sir; I mean that you should tell me what that means.” Isaac said.
“Alright, the word coenzyme is a nonprotein organic compound that,
in presence of an enzyme, plays an essential role in the reaction
that is catalyzed by the enzyme. Coenzymes, which frequently
contains the B vitamins in their molecular structure,
including coenzyme A, FAD, and NAD.
I hope you would want to know what these coenzymes means?”
The lecturer asked.
“Yes sir.” The students replied.
“Ok, coenzyme A is a nucleotide containing pantothenic acid,
which is an important coenzyme in the Krebs cycle
and in the metabolism of fatty acid. This nucleotide is a compound
consisting of a nitrogen-containing base or linked to a sugar
and a phosphate group. That of FAD is flavin adenine dinucleotide,
which is a coenzyme derived from riboflavin, that takes part in many
important oxidation-reduction reaction. It consist of two phosphate groups,
adenine, and ribose. The NAD means nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide
which has to do with coenzyme that acts as a hydrogen acceptor in oxidation-reduction reaction, particularly in the electron transport chain in cellular respiration. Alright, that is all for today; hold your questions,
when next we meet, we’ll continue from here. Good day students”.
The lecturer concluded.
“Good day sir.”
The students replied. After the lectures, Junior was coming back with Sandra and they were playing and chatting as usual. Suddenly, they were surrounded by six hefty, huge, young men; fearful in their appearance and highly devouring in their attitude. Like luna-best, they dived on Junior and gave him the first inimical beating of his life. After the uniformed painful beating, the horrifying looking young men, took Junior’s wallet that contained thousands of Naira, his cell phone and wrist watch, and they equally warned him never to come near Sandra or make friend with any female in the campus until he become a member of the BBC Brotherhood. Sandra who was confused, embarrassed, and moved in pity over the treatment on Junior, tried all she could to rescue him, but her effort was not good enough to do that.
The BBC stands for Bad Boys of the Campus. They had troubled the school a lot and had caused a lot of havoc in the campus. Members of this cult are usually those that saw education as a difficult field to venture into; they have the general belief that they cannot make it academically; they are usually illiterates though still in the campus. Since they cannot comprehend like others and belief they can’t make it themselves like others, they then decided to get whatever thing they wanted by force with the means of gun and violence.
When the embarrassment on Junior by the BBC Brotherhood became unbearable to Junior, he complained it to John his roommate for friendly advice.
“What kind of nonsense is this?
What do these stupid cult men think they are?
Lord of the campus or what?
‘Don’t touch any girl including Sandra
unless you belong to the BBC Brotherhood’
I don’t even know what they mean by that idiotic abbreviation name.
But over my dead body that a man born of a woman
will take Sandra away from me.
And I rather die than to belong to any foolish cult.
I think I have to do something about this matter and very fast.”
Junior complained.
“Junior (John called), you are playing with fire;
I mean, you are playing with death.
You know what? In fact you are just like a beautiful chicken
playing and parading in the presence of a hungry and angry hawk;
and you should know what that means.
Is this not your second year and you are preparing to take your second year
Final examination, isn’t it?” John asked.
“Of course yes” Junior replied.
“Oh! So you are aware of this and you are here playing with death.
Junior, don’t mess up with the BBC Brotherhood,
I am even surprised that you are still alive.
But let me tell you, that you are still alive is a sign that they like you.
If not that, they would have wasted your life all these while.
In my own case, they did not waste much time to warn me as they did to you;
when they asked me to joined them and I refused, the next day,
they got hold of me and beat me mercilessly; I was left half dead.
I woke up and saw a letter on my belly, when I opened and read the letter; it read,
‘You should consider it an honour
that you are ordered to become a member of the BBC Brotherhood;
the next time we come to ask you of this,
you must consider yourself a dead man. King Kodo’
After the horrifying threat and bitter experience, I had no other option
than to agree to their demand.” John said.
“What! (Junior exclaimed) So you are a cult member
and worse still, one of those threatening, hunting, and tormenting my life?”
Junior was dismayed.
“Listen to me Junior (John continued), I did said
I will never in my entire campus life be a member of any cult.
But I guess I was totally wrong, because now I am enjoying the whole
show. Imagine a fearful me before; I received a lot of insults, intimidations,
threats and beatings. But now, no one dared mess up with me, but if any one
knowingly or unknowingly does; my men will beat hell out of such person
and can even kill him if that be the case. Now Junior let me talk to you out of
experience; there is nothing there in belonging, I mean there is absolutely nothing
to be afraid of. Rather, you will be the one to enjoy and gain much out of it
trust me. You absolutely have nothing to lose;
if you belong, you stand a better chance to be protected from bad guys
in this campus. Another thing is that any beautiful girl you like
becomes automatically yours with no debate;
somebody like you that has so much money and are highly intelligent
can become the next King Kodo of the BBC Brotherhood.” John concluded.
“Next King Kodo? What is the meaning of that?” Junior asked.
“A…Ha…! (John exclaimed) Do you know what that means?
Do you know what it means to become the next King Kodo?
It means that you are the lord of this campus, in fact the entire university.
And no one dare mess you up or challenge your authority.
Also, everything in the cult and entire campus
both money, women, and other valuables becomes yours
and totally under your control, no question or debate about that.
So you see Junior, there is every reason for you to belong to this cult
and it will also help you to have Sandra back without any interference;
at least, if for nothing, just because of Sandra you have to do this.
If you truly love Sandra, you have to listen to my advice,
when you become a member, it will equally help you to protect yourself
and Sandra from being hurt by any devil; because the mighty spirit and the glory
of the great BBC Brotherhood will be guiding and protecting you.”
John concluded.
“But John, what if Sandra gets to discover that I have joined cult,
how do you think she will feel? She made me promise her that I will
never succumb to the threats of the cult let alone joining them even if it
meant death. Before now, Sandra and I have started planning on what to do
about this matter. And I am very sure that Sandra will break out from our
relationship if she ever discovers I am now a cult member,
and that is one of the things I think I cannot endure.” Junior said.
“Junior, forget about that, who will tell her; are you?
All these while you are staying with me, have you been able to know
I was a cult member apart from the fact that I just told you.
Besides, what did Sandra know about cult?
And I am sure that she did not know what it means by life and death.
Nobody, I repeat, nobody plays with the great BBC Brotherhood
and get away with it. If you love your life and that of Sandra
and would want to protect it, you better co-operate; this is my
advice to you. You know you are my best friend, and I wouldn’t
like anything bad to happen to you.” John replied.
“O…okay…! Stop this sweet and plausible sermon.
When and how do we meet your so-called King Kodo or whatever?”
Junior asked.
“That’s my friend! (John exclaimed)
Now you are talking, we shall go and see him in the Brotherhood temple tonight”
John replied.
The initiation of Junior was done that night, and he became a bona-fide member of the BBC Brotherhood. With this cult, Junior became very rude, rough and highly impious. Sandra his girl friend and Juliet his mother none of these were aware that he had joined cult. But Sandra sometimes wondered about the sudden disappearance of the cult men that always threatened and beat up Junior whenever he is with her. Sandra had asked this rhetorical question to herself a lot and decided to confront Junior with the same question. Having asked Junior a thousand time, she became discourage of asking since Junior would always deny of being a member of any cult as he would always make his words plausible and would also hypnotize her into believing him. Though Sandra would always believe Junior after his well articulated and harmonized speech, doubt often tried to make its way into her mind about the sudden stop of cult gang’s harassment and embarrassment, coupled with his suspicious attitude, though not all the time.
The BBC Brotherhood as a secret society, engaged in robbery and raping within the campus alone; but as time went by, especially when Junior joined the cult and started pumping the cult with money, they then out grew robbery in the campus alone with axe and few local guns but started operating also outside the campus even in some advanced banks. The reason was because, with the money pumped in by Junior, they were then able to import sophisticated weapons like guns that enabled them rob successfully in any place. Not minding the fact that Junior was solely committed to the cult, he never played with his studies. In fact, Junior was combining cultism and studies together.
The BBC Brotherhood had involved in a lot of robbery out of which they made lots of millions. This notwithstanding, his mother was still unaware of it and so was Sandra.
As now a full time robbery gang, the BBC Brotherhood decided to go with laws that will be their guide. Some of the rules stated that if anybody recognized them during operation, that person must be killed at the spot no matter who that person is. Even if it is a girl friend, father or mother, siblings or any relation not minding how the person may be dear to you. Another one is that no one should be caught during operation; and no one should reveal their secret even at the point of death and the punishment to any offender is death. After some time, rumors about Junior being a robber and one of the members of BBC Brotherhood began to spread like wild fire around the campus. Sandra started doubting Junior, but she would always be deceived by the studious nature of Junior; she believed that a robber and a cult member would not have time to study his book let alone making his papers. On the other hand, the university authority began to suspect Junior about his once known integrity and decided to put their ears on the ground, as they were also highly determined to find out the truth about the rumors and his resent unusual behaviours.
CHAPTER SIX
During his final year in the university, Junior and his gang discovered a vital operation that would fetch each one of them substantial amount of money. A right hand man of a particular bank who was also the manager of the bank, by name Mr. Kunle planned the robbery with them and gave them vital information they needed on how to operate in order to have success in their robbery. The BBC Brotherhood left for the operation as planned, they were careful to follow the instructions and guide line given to them by the bank manager Mr. Kunle. The operation as expected was successful; but Junior in the process of trying to be fast and sharp in order to avoid the law ‘thou shall not be caught’ jumped into their car and his ID card fell off his pocket. One of the bank officers was careful enough to see and pick the ID card; the ID card contains information about Junior. The bank authority decided to trace Junior with the ID card to his school.
The BBC Brotherhood met and shared the money among themselves, apart from King Kodo who always had the lion’s share, each person was having five million naira. After that, King Kodo warned the gang to stay away from the campus and if possible to travel out of the country, but if traveling out of the country was not possible, they should do everything within their power to make sure they would stay away from the campus. He equally warned them that they should not make use of the money in Nigeria until after three to five months to avoid any form of suspicion. Junior as a young man no longer wanted to depend on his mother’s money; since he was deceived into joining cult, he became proud and developed a bad and nasty habit of getting and spending money injudiciously, especially when there are people like girls to hail him. Sandra who had warned him secretly about this, decided to confront him publicly one day.
“Junior, what has come over you?
This is not the Junior that attracted me.
You have become totally incomprehensible,
In fact your attitude these days are totally strange to me.
Please Junior tell me, what is wrong with you?” Sandra asked.
“What do you mean Sandra?
(Junior asked as he went very close to her to avoid people’s attentions)
I have told you that nothing is wrong with me;
I’m just trying to make myself happy with school life.
Or don’t you want to see me happy?” Junior asked.
“Junior stop that crap, you know exactly what I am talking about,
I ever want you to be happy, but not this sudden obnoxious attitude of yours” Sandra replied.
“I am sure you are not trying to bring up that cult issue here again,
because that is going to infuriate me seriously.
And you know I wouldn’t want to be mad at you.”
Junior said with a bit anger.
“Do you think that getting mad with me will surprise me anymore?
I now believe that indeed you have joined cult,
That is why you have become such a dictatorial,
truculent and supercilious luna-beast.
Junior I hate you, in fact, this relationship is over”
Sandra said angrily and withdrew her hand from Junior and started leaving with tears rolling down her eyes. Junior called her.
“Sandra! Sandra!! Sandra!!!
What has come over you? Please stop this madness.”
Junior said as he ran after her.
“Leave her alone; Sandra don’t listen to that disguise wild lion”
Judith, Sandra’s girl friend said angrily.
“How dare you put your insolence stinking mouth
in a matter that does not concern you? Idiot!” Junior replied angrily.
“You can call me whatever you like.
This matter is my business because Sandra is my friend;
and I will not fold my arms and watch my friend to get into trouble.
In fact, you are lucky it is somebody like Sandra,
If it were somebody like me, I would have given you the greatest slap
of your life” Judith said.
“Who the hell do you think you are to address me that way?
Oh! I see, so you’ve got the nerve, the impetus, and the effrontery,
To come to my neigbourhood and throw a mortal cutting words at me?
I will make sure that I teach you the most horrible
and painful lessons of your reckless life.” Junior said angrily.
“Junior if anything happens to my friend, I will not forgive you.”
Sandra said and continued her journey.
“Sandra come back here, we can settle this. Okay fine you can go,
Why am I even worried, in fact, you can go to hell, I don’t care.”
Junior said when Sandra refused coming back to him as he pleaded. The school authority believed that Junior must be one of the cult members who had engaged in robbery and other public nuisance within and outside the campus thereby denting and terminating the good image of the school. The robbery made by the BBC Brotherhood kept the bank in great agony and as a result, the bank authority made sure that all hand were on deck to bring the culprits to book. With the ID of Junior, the bank authority traced Junior to the school; they made a consensus plan with the school authority on how to arrest Junior so that through him, they can get all his gang members. Junior was about to sit for his final year examination as a medical student, as a result of that, he could not abide by the laws of the cult by King Kodo to stay away from the campus. Therefore, during the examination, he would sneak in into the hall to take the examination. He was doing this at every day of the examination thinking that nobody was after him, but he was not aware that the school and the bank authorities had plan to arrest him on the day of his final paper. So, on the day he would sit for his final paper, he sneaked in as usual; as planned by the school and bank authorities, the police laid an ambush for him. Immediately after the examination, Junior was sneaking out of the examination hall as usual when policemen who had surrounded the campus hall in ambush rushed out and arrested him and took him to their custody and he was detain. The worst part of it was that a gun and some pieces of Indian herm were found on Junior.
Junior was charged to court; when the news that Junior was arrested and charged to court with the allegation that he was a robber and cult member who robbed in a bank reached Juliet his mother, she was bitterly sad on hearing such obnoxious news. She was more infuriated to know that her only son was in prison; Juliet never believed that her son was an armed robber let alone being a cult member. She believed that the scenario was only a fabricated lies to damage the integrity of her family and to stop her son from graduating successfully with others from the university. Immediately, Juliet consulted her lawyer who quickly investigated the case and told her that they can win the case but that it would cost her a lot. The lawyer explained to Juliet that freeing Junior in this case would be a tough one and may lead her to total bankruptcy and to the down fall of her business; but for the love of a mother to her only child, Juliet said
“Please lawyer, do everything within your power
to ensure that Junior will be a free man. I don’t care what it will cost,
even if it means selling all my wrappers and other valuables,
I wouldn’t mind, all I want is to have my only son Junior set free for me.”
Juliet pleaded. The case indeed was a tough one as the lawyer had said; it took a good number of years. Juliet spent all her money and began to sell her wrappers and other valuables. Later, Junior was discharged and acquitted; Juliet was overwhelmed with joy to see and have her only son again as a freed man.
In all the troubles Junior went through; from the time he was arrested to when he was released, his cult gang never showed up or visited him. But after a month and six weeks he was discharged and acquitted, the cult gang called him on phone and told him where he must meet them. On reaching there on that day, Junior complained bitterly on their negligent attitude toward him and on how they abandoned him to suffer all alone without anybody coming to visit him or even call on phone. In their response, King Kodo who spoke on behalf of the BBC Brotherhood explain to Junior that it was one of the strategies they employed to avoid being caught; King Kodo also said to Junior,
“Junior, we are sorry for all you went through all these years.
But to be honest with you, the reason I said this sorry to you
was because in all you went through, you never disclosed our identity
and that proved you to be a committed member of this family.
And that also was why we withdrew from killing you as we planned at first
and have decided to give you a second chance. But Junior let me warn you,
nobody disobeys our law and my command; I mean, nobody disobeys instruction
and gets away with it. And you know that this is one of the commandments
in our law; you know that I don’t need to begin to recite the entire commandment because you know them already. And you also know that the punishment
of disobeying the law is death. I told you people to stay away from campus
and if possible to fly out of the country; when I said that I knew what I meant. Everybody abided by this, but only you chose to disobey and you have seen what it has cost you and this family. We will not kill you, yes, we will pardon you
for today; but, you must make sure this will not repeat itself.
Because if it does, there will be no room for pardon again.
Meanwhile, you have to apologies to the BBC Brotherhood
so that we can welcome you back to the family”
King Kodo ordered. Junior had no other option than to apologies to his gang- the BBC Brotherhood.
“Well, with due respect, humility and acknowledgment of my mistake,
I hereby apologies to King Kodo
and the entire members of the BBC Brotherhood.
And I solemnly pledge that I will obey all the rules and regulation
of BBC Brotherhood as interpreted by King Kodo.
And I also pledge with my life that I will not repeat such
or any other mistake again.”
Junior promised hypnotically. After the apologies and pledge of Junior, he was welcomed again into the BBC Brotherhood. The celebration of regaining a lost member was done; since they have celebrated a lost sheep that was found, their evil deeds and havoc creation also have to continue.
CHAPTER SEVEN
The court case of Junior was a tough one especially in terms of money; it was that tough that it led Juliet to her financial and business down fall, so that she began to eat from hand to mouth. The court case made Juliet to sell all her husband’s companies and also withdrew all her money from the bank; she as well sold most of her valuables and the whole thing was eaten up by Junior’s court case. When Junior came out from prison as a free man, he considered the effort of his mother and all she went through to ensure he was a free man, he promised his mother heaven and earth. But to be frank, he meant every promise he made to his mother initially; but his meeting again with the BBC Brotherhood, his former cult and robbery gang, made all his promises to his mother and his new resolution to star up a new and good life gibberish. After Junior became a free man, he had decided to do away with cultism, robbery and to start up a new life. He had also decided to make life better for his mother. Junior had huge amount of money in his bank account, but he knew very well that his mother will question him if he began to make use of the money because he had not at that time gotten a job and was not doing any business either. He also knew that his mother will not collect any money from him or even touch anything bought with it if he was unable to properly explain to her how he made the money. To convince his mother on how he made his money in order to convince her to accept the money and whatever that is bought with the money, Junior decided to start up a little business in order to convince his mother or make her believe that the business is the means through which he made or is making his money. All these plans were on how Junior could help and support his mother for all she went through for him; but his meeting again with his cult and robbery gang the BBC brotherhood, made all these good plans to become totally useless.
Since Junior had come back from prison and since the police was unable to get them or get their secret from Junior who was ones their victim, the BBC brotherhood decided to continue their robbery and their obnoxious nuisances in the society again. One day, the BBC Brotherhood received information about a man that will be travelling back to his village from Lagos. The man’s children outside the country sent him substantial amount of U.S Dollars to start up a nice building in the village; so after changing the Dollars to Naira, he started his journey back to the village. The informant negotiated with the BBC Brotherhood to rob the money from the man. To make the robbery easy for them, the informant gave them the man’s picture; the way the man was to travel from was also disclosed to them. They were also informed the day the man would travel, the kind of car he would travel with. The BBC Brotherhood was also told that the man put the money into a sack bag so that the bag of the money would be mistaken to crayfish bag. At exactly 4:00pm, the big bus arrived at the lonely Shagamu road where the robbers were already waiting to operate. Others as planned hid themselves in the bush alongside the road, while Junior and Ikedi were at the side of the road pretending to be repairing their car as though it has spoilt. By the time the bus came closer where Junior and Ikedi were, they jumped into the middle of the road with their guns as they started shooting in the air. Others inside the bush rushed out with their guns and started shooting in the air as well. As they shot, they as well shouted at the top of their voices simultaneously in order to scare the driver and the passengers so that he would stop the car. They were shouting,
“Stop! Stop!! Stop!!! The car or all of you will die now!” They said.
As expected, the driver was gripped with inestimable fear and all the passengers,’ he stopped the car out of panic and they were commanded to go down from the car one after another, starting from the driver, those at the front seat to those at the last seat. The reason the robbers asked them to go down that way was to enabled them easily locate the man they were looking for. To make it easier, Junior and two other guys were asked to go inside of the car and be asking passengers out of the car line by line, so that those of the robbers outside can easily locate the man among the men there. The man who knew what he was carrying went at the last seat at the back of the car and sat down with his bag of money that looked like crayfish bag. Beside the man was seated a very important person, the appearance of this very person would have jeopardize the BBC Brotherhood operation that day.
When Juliet lost her business and her husband’s companies, she decided to start up petty trading in the village, so she joined the big bus with less transport charge in order to save her money and at least have some balance in her pocket. But unfortunately for her, the bus turns out to be the one that was attacked by the armed robbers. With a glance at his mother, Junior was highly shocked when he realized that indeed it was really his mother that was standing right before him. He was like killing himself; he was highly shattered emotionally and did not actually know what to do at that odd moment. On the other hand, Juliet thought that she was dreaming to see her son with a gun and as an armed robber. The moment she realized she was not dreaming and that the person standing before her was her son, the fear that clothed her at first disappeared. Junior recognizing his mother tried every sign he could use to stop his mother from letting his cult members with him in the bus knows she was his mother to avoid her death by his men. But Juliet never understood the sign and was not even in the mood to understand or co-operate with any sign. The moment she realizes that Junior was among the hooligans, at ones, she stood up boldly on her feet to the surprise of the other robbers in the bus and as well as the passengers in the bus and called out on her son angrily, lugubriously and pessimistically.
“Junior!” Juliet called.
There were confusion in the bus between Junior and the cult guys with him as well as the remaining passengers in the bus.
“Junior! (The robbers with him in the bus shouted) who is this woman?”
They asked. Before Junior could try to formulate words to answer in order to spare his mother, Juliet his mother had already stood on her feet angrily and shouted,
“Oh! Junior, you are a disgrace to God, your late father and I your mother.
So it is true that you Junior of all people are a cult member and a robber?
I never believed when I heard that you are doing this.
I have taken time all my life to warn you about the danger
of friendship with evil men and being part of evil.
So Junior, in all my efforts through God’s help to make you somebody
in life, is this the way you want to pay me back?
Junior, give me one good reason you should join this evil men.
Is it in terms of money? I made sure you were provided with enough money
you needed. Is it education? You are a graduate of medicine and surgery.
What on earth Junior that you wanted that I did not provide for you?
I was once wealthy with what my husband left for me;
but now look at me Junior, look at what you have reduced me to.
I am now as poor as any church rat, all because of you.
Is this the heaven and earth you promised me when you came out from prison? Junior why have you decided to treat me this way? Junior why?”
Juliet cried bitterly. Junior felt very sorry for his mother, all she had went through because of him. He reflected all he had caused his mother to innocently suffer because of him. In regret, he bowed down his head in shame, tears and emotional distressed. But his repentant mood was rudely interrupted by the bitter shout of the other two robbers with him inside the bus which was made more grievous when King Kodo got to know what that was going on inside the bus.
“Junior for the last time, who is this foolish witch?
Who is this stupid woman that want to disrupt our mission?” They asked angrily.
Junior who could no longer hide it opened up and said,
“She is my mother, please don’t hurt her.” Junior replied.
When King Kodo heard what was going on inside the bus, he rushed in with a great rage,
“Junior…! (He shouted) what are you waiting for?
Will you waste that old idiotic witch?
Come on Junior, do it now!”
Junior was shivering seriously and could not shoot his mother or wished any harm to her. Rather, he started pleading on behalf of his mother.
“Please brothers help me and plead with King Kodo,
this is my mother, she is a widow, and she had gone through hell
because of me. Please Kodo I can’t kill her. Please spare her life for me”
Junior pleaded.
“Junior! (King Kodo exclaimed) you are very stupid.
I am sure that you are aware that you are wasting our precious time.
Nobody dare disobey the BBC Brotherhood and gets away with it.
You were pardoned the first time you did it, but not again.
This time if you don’t obey both you and your foolish mother
are going down the grave now. Do not forget that the reward for disobedience
is death and with this you shall be judged right now if you fail to co-operate.”
King Kodo said angrily. As Junior tried to plead more, King Kodo decided to prove to Junior how serious he was. He called some of his men who had faced such situation before Junior to let him know how they handled it.
“John!” He called.
“King Kodo I dey right here” John replied.
“Narrate to Junior your experience in this organization” King Kodo demanded.
“Junior (John started). During my initiation I killed my lovely mother”
John told Junior.
“Ikedi!” King Kodo called.
“Kodo I lay petee here, weten you want make I do?
Just tokam and I go do am now” Ikedi replied.
“Just tell Junior your own input in this business.” King Kodo replied.
“Oh! That, Junior you know everything wey happen now.
No be before your face I killed my sis (sister) and my girl friend.
You dey there now, you saw how it all happened.” Ikedi replied.
“Even me, I mean, a whole me King Kodo, abide by our law.
I killed Victoria my lovely girl friend,
oh! May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace; we did this to maintain
and honour the laws and reputation of the BBC Brotherhood.
Now Junior, common to waste this old fool you called mother,
you are here shading crocodile tears like a baby.
Don’t provoke me Junior. You better do it now
or I will personally waste your life and that of your stupid mother.”
King Kodo threaten; out of fear and pressure mounted on Junior, he lifted his gun, pointed at his mother and before Juliet could open her mouth to shout, Junior had release three gun shorts on his mother.
“Junior! (Juliet shouted faintly) You shoot your own mother
not minding all that I have gone through for you.
So this is the way you want to pay me back?
The way to say thank you is by killing me your mother.
Is this the thousands of promises you made to me when you came out of prison?” Juliet voice was going down and down and she began to lose her strength.
“Oh! God (She continued) why me?
What have I done to deserve this?
I know I asked you for a child yes,
but I never asked you for the one that will kill me.
Junior, I your mother put curse on you,
I curse your entire life. You shall suffer more than job;
my blood will hunt you beyond your imagination.
You will struggle to make ends meet, but like water in a basket,
so will all your struggle be a miserable waste, you shall achieve nothing.
Junior, you shall live in pains all the days of your life,
till the day you will repent and worship the God of your parents-
Jesus Christ, in spirit and in truth. But as for you evil men,
for the fact that you caused my son to shoot me,
none of you will live to marry let alone having a child.
You shall all die by gun” Juliet concluded.
After these words, Juliet had her last breath and gave up the ghost
CHAPTER EIGHT
Junior could not make a move or say a word after his mother’s last comment and breath. All he could do was to bow down his head in tears, sorrow and regret; even, his gun was about falling out of his hands that his gang had to take it away from him. They have no time to waste; therefore they beat up the man with the money and took the money from him. Junior who was in turmoil and like a living corpse and still in his speechless and stagnant mood was forced into the car by his gang members and they drove out in escape. Junior received a little verbal consolation from his gang after which he was left alone to mourn in great pain and agony. Junior mourned his mother for three months.
The bank had recovered from their painful loss after five years that the BBC Brotherhood robbed them. In addendum, they had equally generated a huge amount of money; therefore Mr. Kunle the bank trusted manager decided to use the opportunity to enrich himself as he did five years ago. Right there in his office, he picked up his cell phone and called King Kodo the leader of the BBC Brotherhood.
“Hello! Who is on the line?
Am I speaking with King Kodo?” The manager asked
“And na who you be? Na who they talk” King Kodo replied.
“Alright, it is I, Mr. Kunle.” The manager replied.
“Oh…! Manager, is that you?
I know there must be a new deal” King Kodo said.
“Of course yes, there is a new deal; this time greater deal.
The bank has generated a huge amount of money.
But this time 30% is mine, the last time you gave me only 10%;
but this time the deal will fetch huge amount of money.
So this time, I will have 30% of the money;
because, the greater the deal, the greater the percentage.” The manager said.
“Manager, do you think it is easy to just walk into the bank
and come out with money?
Don’t you know that it is a great risk to rob in banks that have well organize security like yours? And don’t forget that the security will be more organized now
and careful based on what happened to it last time;
I mean, the robbery five years ago.”
King Kodo replied.
“King Kodo, do not forget that I am still the manager of the bank,
and still capable of giving you every needed information for the operation.
And as you know; my information and direction is the best and easiest way
you can think of in robbing successfully in any bank.
So don’t worry about the security,
I will give you every information you need okay?” Mr. Kunle assured.
“All right manager, in that case, we will give you 20% of the deal,
how about that?” King Kodo asked.
“No! No!! No!!! King Kodo, to avoid wasting of time
lets agree on 25%. Do we make a deal on that?” Mr. Kunle asked.
“In that case, we are out of the business, you can look for other guys”
King Kodo replied.
“Okay wait! Wait!! I …em…ok, you win” Mr. Kunle agreed.
“So Mr. Manager, when and how do we start the operation?” King Kodo asked.
“Leave that to me. I will get back to you.” Mr. Kunle replied.
One of the bank’s receptionists by name Ngozi was on her way to the office of Mr. Kunle the bank manager to deliver some vital information. Reaching the door of the office, she overheard the discussion of Mr. Kunle with a person she only knows by name as King Kodo. She had her cell phone with her so she taped every discussion Mr. Kunle made with King Kodo. Mr. Kunle thought that nobody was around to hear his discussion, unfortunately for him; he never knew that Ngozi was at his door let alone taping all his discussion with the so-called King Kodo. After recording all she heard Mr. Kunle discussed, Ngozi relented from entering into the office of Mr. Kunle as she was about doing initially, and rather went direct with the tape to the office of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and let loose every secret. The officer immediately consulted the police and Mr. Kunle was arrested. He was tortured mercilessly and he was threatened that he will be killed if they did not get the so-called King Kodo and his men. With the painful and unbearable torture given to him, the police was able to discover from Mr. Kunle that he did the five years ago robbery with the gang of King Kodo. The police decided to use Mr. Kunle to set King Kodo and his men up in order to get them either alive or dead. This made Mr. Kunle to give the BBC Brotherhood wrong information. As instructed by the police and before them, Mr. Kunle was made to lie to King Kodo by telling him that the robbery would not be a road operation like the first one, but that it was going to be done right inside the bank premises. Mr. Kunle told King Kodo,
“You will just have to come around with your men,
when you come around, you will see a bush near the bank building,
hide inside the bush with your men. Do not come out until I give you signal
with phone flash. When that is done, you break into the bank compound
with your men. Take the money bags from the first dark blue van
and that will be the end of the game. Are you there?” Mr. Kunle asked.
King Kodo thought that the sound of bitter kola was the same with the taste; they were not aware that this time, there was a green snake in a green grass.
The government had heard a lot about the unpleasant stories of the BBC Brotherhood and had recorded all the damages they had caused and had declared them most wanted and ordered the police to get them either dead or alive. On that fateful Friday afternoon, exactly 12:45pm, King Kodo and his men were already in the bush around the bank compound waiting anxiously for Mr. Kunle phone flash. Everybody was ready and at the same time thinking about what to do with such huge amount of money...
