Chapter Seven: Voice Lessons
Hey guys! I'm terribly sorry about leaving again. I know, I suck. But thank you so much for all the comments. As a few of you have pointed out, YES, Alfred's story about spilling some tea into a fountain was a reference to the Boston Tea Party. I felt like I had to add it in there, since it's one of my favourite parts of American history. Well, now that we've cleared that up, on with the story!
***********
Alfred and Mathew spent several days working everything together. Mathew had began to teach Alfred some basic French he would need in order to make everything as perfect as possible. "Dude! you live in Canada! Why do you need french?" Alfred had asked, completely fed up with the lesson.
"Well, first of all, Papa is French. Second off, a lot of people in Canada speak french. Even if they didn't, you still need to learn this! What's papa gonna say when I suddenly can't speak or understand French? It'll raise suspicion!"
Alfred groaned and continued to try to pronounce everything.

The next day, Alfred and Mathew had gone to meet up their friends by the lake. Their task for the day was to try to match eachother's volume. Mathew had to be louder, and Alfred had to be quiter.
"Okay, how about this?" Mathew cleared his throat and began to speak. "Hey guys, I'm Alfred!" His voice was still quiet, though he felt like he was yelling.
"Nah, you gotta bring it way up! Yell! Let it out!" Gilbert gave Mathew advice from a rock he was sitting on, oddly amused by everything.
Antonio sat on the sand next to him, nodding.
"I am yelling!" Mathew sighed and sat in the sand, crossing his legs.
"Yell louder! Here, think of something that angers you, something that pushes your buttons."
"Like your bird taking a shit all over my stuff?" Antonio interjected, wrinkling his noise in disgust.
"Yeah, exactly!"
Mathew sighed, and began thinking. He thought of when he had first met Alfred, how he had been knocked over like he was nothing. He thought of everytime he had been asked to speak up, to speak louder.
Gilbert and Antonio watched Mathew intently, waiting.
Suddenly, Mathew let out a loud yell, startling Gilbert and Antonio.
"Mein Gott!"
"Ay Dios mio!"
The two started hooting, jumping up to high-five Mathew, who was still sitting with a shocked look on his face. "Was that..Did I really just do that?" Mathew looked up at his friends, grinning.
~~~
Alfred's head snapped in the direction of the yell. He was concerned at first (he thought Gilbert was trying something funny), but relaxed when he saw they were okay.
"I am guessing the little one finally managed to speaking louder?" Ivan mused, sitting on a rock.
Raivis nodded. "I-it looks like it."
Alfred grinned. "That's good. How am I doing?"
"Eh, could be using some more working. Speak again?"
Alfred cleared his throat before talking. "Hello, my name is Mathew and I like maple syrup, eh!"
Raivis laughed quietly, and Ivan shook his head. "Niyet, I was wrong, needs a lot more working. I am not thinking little Mattie would be introducing himself like that. And speak a little quieter, you still sounding loud."
Alfred nodded and tried again.
Within an hour, he had managed to speak as quietly as Mathew.
The six friends regrouped. Alfred noticed that Gilbert had his arm slung around Mathew's shoulders. He purposely stayed near them, bumping into Gilbert 'accidentally'.
The group went to the mess hall, laughing and talking the whole way.
~~~~~
"Well, I guess we're ready..." Mathew muttered, moving his food around with his fork.
"Yeah, I guess so. I finally got your voice down. Good thing too, since we go home next week..."
Everyone nodded.
"This was a fun summer. I still can't believe you guys are actually twins. It trips me out everytime!" Gilbert laughed, nudging Mathew in the side.
Ivan nodded. "Da, it's weird." everyone laughed.
Mathew looked at the others, all the new friends he had made. He was going to be sad, having to leave them until next summer. Especially Gilbert. The two had gotten really, really close since the summer had started. Mathew sighed as he stabbed a carrot with his fork. "I'm going to miss you guys..."
Gilbert frowned and put an arm around him. "Hey, we all exchanged skypes and schiesse. It'll be like we never left."
~~~~~~
Alfred nodded, then 'accidentally' kicked Gilbert's leg under the table. "Oops, sorry bro!"
Gilbert rolled his eyes. "Ja, whatever."
Everyone went back to eating and cracking terrible jokes for the rest of the night.
~~~~~
Everyone stood up when the bell that signaled the end of diner sounded. Alfred, his ex-cabin mates, and Antonio left, leaving Gilbert alone with Mathew.
Gilbert grabbed Mathew's hand when he began following the others.
Mathew stopped walking, making a surprised sound. He turned to face Gilbert with a confused look. "U-uh, may I help you?"
Gilbert looked at him for a bit before answering. His eyes scanned Mathew's face so intently, a small blush surfaced on the Canadian's cheeks.
"Mattie...I just wanted to say...oh mein gott." Gilbert let out an embarrassed laugh, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand.
"I was just...Look, you might not feel the same way, but..." The flustered German looked down.
Mathew's heart was beating a thousand miles a minuet. He looked at Gilbert hopefully.
Please say you like me, please say you like me.... Mathew thought to himself.
"Mattie...I... just wanted to say that, uh..." he paused, then spoke rapidly. "that dinner was great, yeah!"
Mathew looked disappointed, his shoulders slumping slightly. "I..oh."
Gilbert sighed, then shook his head. "No, that's not it. Listen Mattie, I've had...what I guess you could call a 'crush' on you since i first saw you that first day of camp. I just..you just looked really adorable, and then I got to know you, and...ja.."
Mathew's blush got darker. "I...Gil...I feel... I like you too..."
Gilbert's eyes lit up. "Seriously?"
Mathew nodded.
"That's...Holy fucking shit! Mattie-"
"Guys! Hurry up!" Antonio stood in the door way of the mess hall, his arms crossed, with an impatient look on his face.
"o-oh, coming!" Mathew began walking towards Antonio, pulling Gilbert along behind him.
Alfred, Ivan, and Raivis were all waiting by a tree.
~~~~
Alfred watched as Gilbert, Antonio, and his brother made their way to where he stood. He noticed the blushes that both his brother and Gilbert wore. He went to separate the two, putting his arms over Gilbert's and Mathew's shoulders and standing in between them. "You guys took for god damned ever!" Alfred laughed, giving Gilbert a pointed look that basically said 'if you ever lay a finger on my brother I swear to God i will personally murder you'.
The brothers said goodbye to their friends, then went back to their cabin.
