Chapter Four: The Isolation Cabin

"Alright everybody, you may return to your activities!" Called the cheerful counselor. A roar of happiness came from the herd of campers forced to go on the hike to take two specific males to the dreaded isolation cabin.

"This is so not fair..." Alfred muttered under his breath. Mathew glared at him from the corner of his eye, clearly upset as well. Mathew turned his head to look at his ex-cabin mates. Antonio was waving frantically, while Gilbert offered him a smile and a playful wink before being herded away by another counselor. Mathew's cheeks burned and he turned to face Mr. Yao and Mr. Vargas, which reminded him, in a way, of a worker back at his place named Lovino.

~~~~
Alfred looked back at his friends, who waved and yelled sorry before running away with the others. Alfred let out a frustrated sigh, then faced the two counselors who were condemning them to isolation. The Italian grinned, while the older man began reprimanding them for what seemed like the millionth time.
Alfred ignored his words, faintly hearing him drone on and on.
And on.
And on.
He sighed again, thinking how he couldv'e avoided all of this, suddenly thinking of a ton of ideas. Once Mr. Yao finished, he gave the two a grin. "Now, off to the isolation cabin." Mr. Vargas pointed to a large cabin, with a staircase leading up to the door. Once Mr.Yao began walking away, Feliciano stepped towards the boys. "Try not to kill eachother, okay? My brother and I once had to go to the isolation cabin, and it was the most fun we've ever had. Ciao!" He smiled at the two, then ran off towards Mr. Yao.
~~~~

Now that he'd brought it up, killing Alfred was beginning to sound like an excellent idea to Mathew.

Since he was the most responsible, Feliciano entrusted him with the cabin key. He began trudging up the stair, lugging his bright red duffel bag with him. Mathew opened the door, then looked back over his shoulder to see Alfred with an annoyed look. "So not fair..." he repeated, following Mathew into the cabin. The two began putting pictures up and getting settled, ignoring eachother the entire time.

Latter that night, Mathew was trying to read the book he'd intended to read the book while at camp, but wasn't able to since he'd met Gilbert. And Antonio, of course. Alfred was across the cabin, curled up in bed, trying to sleep. Mathew chuckled to himself, glad to be able to annoy Alfred with a simple act such as reading with the lights on.

~~~~~
Alfred was purely frustrated, tossing and Turing, unable to sleep. He sat up in bed, then glared at Mathew before flipping off the switch next to his bed. Mathew gave him an annoyed look, then flipped off the switch next to his own bed. The two continued the act, before Mathew ultimately gave up, and went to bed.
The next day it was raining. Hard. Alfred was on his bed, playing on the DS Kiku had given him when he first arrived to camp. Mathew was busy trying to hang one last picture up, when the wind blew the window closest to him open, letting in rain and cold wind. Mathew struggled to close the window as pictures flew off of the board they had been pinned to. Alfred bit his lip and jumped up, helping to close the window. "Oh, it's stuck..." he muttered, tugging on it harder before they were finally able to get the window to close.
~~~~~

"Thanks..." Mathew muttered quietly, sighing when he saw the state of his pictures. "Oh, are any of them ruined?" Alfred asked, bending down to help Mathew. "Nah, just the picture of my house. My papa built it when I was way younger."

"Who's that in the picture?"

"My papa. He didn't know I was taking the picture, or else he would've turned around." Mathew grinned, suddenly realizing how much he missed home. He heard Alfred chuckle.

"What's your mom like?" Alfred asked, returning to his bed. He sat on it with his back against the wall so he could face Mathew.

"Oh, I don't have a mom...I had a dad, but he left us years ago." Mathew shrugged. "Hey, want some oreos?" Mathew pulled out a pack from his trunk, grinning.

"Yeah, sure. Back home, I eat them with peanut butter, everyone thinks it's weird, especially my dad."

"Really? Me too!" Mathew pulled out a jar of peanut butter, chuckling as he sat next to Alfred on the bed.

"So, Alfred, what're your parents like?"

"Well, my dad is pretty up tight, and his cooking absolutely sucks. That's why we got a butler, Kiku. He won't let my dad anywhere near the kitchen." Alfred and Mathew both laughed. "I don't have a mom. I guess I had another dad at some point, but he doesn't like to talk about him."

"Ah..." Mathew scrunched his eyebrows together, suspicious as to why their lives were so... similar.

They looked alike, they both had only one dad....

~~~~~
Alfred was just as confused. He chewed on the inside of his cheek as he thought of the possibility of...no, that's crazy. He pushed the thought out of his head. "Oh hey, the rain let up. Wanna go get Popsicles or somethin'?" Alfred asked as he stood up. He made his way towards the door and opened it, walking outside.
"How could you be thinking of food at a time like this?" Mathew called from inside.
"At a time like what?" Alfred asked with a raised eyebrow, though he already knew the answer.
"We look alike, and our parents won't talk about their previous partners? Just think about it!" Alfred's eyes widened as Mathew spoke. He pushed back him and re-entered the cabin, heading for his trunk.
"What're you looking for?"
"A picture of my other dad..."
"At least yours is probably a whole picture. Mine is a wrinkly old thing torn right down-" Alfred him off.
"The middle?" Alfred held the picture of his father against his chest, the image facing him so Mathew couldn't see it.
~~~~~~

Mathew's eyes widened, and he went to grab his journal, the picture of his dad inside. he clutched it to his chest and walked towards Alfred, biting his lip out of nervousness.

"On a count of three, we show eachother, okay?"

Mathew nodded, clutching the picture tighter.

"one..."

"two..."

"three.."

Time seemed to slow down as the two held their pictures up. Mathew gasped, while Alfred merely stared in shock. The pictures matched perfectly, and showed both their fathers at dinner, presumably on a boat, due to the life preserver behind them. They were smiling, clearly having a good time.

"Th-that's my papa...." Mathew stuttered.

"And...that's my dad..?"

~~~~~~
Alfred was shocked, to say the least. He couldn't believe he had a brother, it was astonishing. He looked up at Mathew, whose eyes were brimming with tears, and Alfred realized that his were too.
"D-do you know that this means?" Mathew whispered.
Alfred nodded. "We're...we're brothers..." Alfred replied, matching his tone.
The two stared at eachother. No one could have ever thought, that in a few miniets, their lives would have changed forever.
