Chapter 17
– Harry & Katelyn – [years before...]
Fate is defined as something that was destined to happen. Chance is defined as the possibility of something happening. Many, when they meet someone special, would call it fate but what if it was chance – where it was simply the chance that two people had met and not at all just fate's doing. Sometimes it's hard to determine a meeting as chance or fate. Harry always believed in fate, however, Katelyn never believed in fate but believed in chance.
"Yeah, I met her in one of El's favourite shops," Louis tells his younger band mate with a grin. The past fifteen minutes was spent by Louis bombarding Harry about this girl him and his girlfriend had met today and how perfect she was for him. "And the best part? She is a fan that isn't too much. I thought she'd scream but she didn't, she was calm and collected when she asked for a picture. Eleanor and I had some tea with her and God, Harry, it's like fate!"
"Lou, stop saying everything is fate," Harry chides from his lying position in his bunk.
"But it is!" His animated friend shouts, making Zayn groan and throw a pillow at the eldest lad – he was recovering from a major headache –, Louis huffs before lowering his voice. "She's coming to the concert tonight, gonna stand with El so she can come back stage."
"You just met her!" Harry whisper shouts. He then goes on to rant about how she could be some serial killer that's out to get him or something.
Now, Harry is acting a bit overdramatic but the truth was, he was kind of nervous. Everything that Louis had told him about this girl was simply amazing. She is in Uni for criminal justice, has an obsession with lukewarm tea and tells terrible jokes too. (Wow, he hasn't even met her yet she's already making him nervous.) It's always been a problem for Harry, that when he'd meet a fan that'd he'd let their expectations down – that he wasn't the "perfect" lad they thought him to be. Perfect was a lot to live up to.
But Louis knew that Harry's rant about her being a 'serial killer' was only out of nerves.
"Hey, calm down." He pats Harry's shoulder. "Everything will be fine and she'll definitely enjoy meeting you, even if Liam is her favourite but I simply couldn't set him up with since he's in a relationship but hey, you're second best for her."
"Wow, what an amazing pep talk."
But of course, Louis was right. Katelyn Foster was ecstatic to meet Harry, to which he attempted at a joke if she was disappointed that he wasn't Liam – she immediately shook her head with a laugh. The two got along great, and Louis was proud of his wingman abilities.
She was as beautiful, as Louis had described, her curly blonde hair, stunning light blue eyes, an adorable mole by her lips and just gorgeous overall. She was spunky and outgoing, Harry admired that.
And despite only being in LA for only three days, Harry had decided to trust her and exchange phone numbers. Throughout the next months of the tour, the two kept in constant contact and Harry found himself developing feelings for her, as did she. Once touring was over, he immediately went back to LA and surprised her by showing up on her door step and asking her on a date.
"It's about time fate had decided to bless me with someone as amazing as you," he tells her with a dimpled grin on their first date. He didn't bother hiding the fact that he fancied her, he found that move to be stupid. It's better to show it rather than bottle it up because if they don't feel the same you know to move on. But Harry knew she felt the same, it was all in her flushed cheeks and small giggles at his clumsiness and terrible jokes. (And the fact that she's on a date with him.)
She rolls her eyes but smiles anyways. "Fate, I think, shouldn't take credit for Louis' work."
"C'mon, you don't believe in fate?" He asks, lifting his glass of water to his lips. He did not once look away from Katelyn's enticing gaze.
"Nope," she says twirling her fork between her fingers. "I believe in chances and it was chance that I had walked into my favourite store, in search of new shoes, where a boybander and his girlfriend were. And it was chance that Liam was relationship at this time so Louis would believe you to be the second best option."
"I told him not to tell anyone that," Harry mutters with a pout. Kate grins and places her hand over his.
"He was kidding. You are obviously the perfect match for me, no matter how much my heart yearns for Liam Payne."
"Katelyn!" Harry whines. She simply laughs before leaning across and pressing a kiss to his lips, their first kiss, one that had shocked Harry. (He planned to initiate their first kiss on her doorstep that night after the date.) But he wouldn't change that fact that she kissed him first– except that his band mates called him a 'pussy' for not kissing her first – because the rest of the date went by smoothly and it was okay because they had their second kiss was on her doorstep, and it was a more physical kiss with his hands at the small of her back while hers messed with the hairs at the nape of his neck.
They knew each other for six months before starting a relationship.
And this bliss, felt from the second the met, continued on for almost three years. It was almost a year since One Direction had ended and Katelyn had moved in with Harry, she was new to her job of being involved in criminal justice and she loved every minute of it, especially when she'd come home to her boyfriend Harry in the kitchen with dinner already made.
"Are you sure you aren't the girl in the relationship?" Katelyn jokes as she places her keys on the counter. Harry looks up from the stir-fry he was making and pouts at her.
"Cooking is manly," he tells her while shaking the hair out of his eyes. Letting the food sit, he walks over to the blonde and kisses her lips sweetly. "I missed you, Kate. It's so boring without you."
"Clingy too," she teases whilst wrapping her arms around his neck. He pinches her side, making her yelp, before pressing his forehead against hers, his teeth sinking down into his bottom lip. Her eyes automatically watches this movement before meeting his eyes. He wants to tell me something, she concludes.
"I was thinking," he mumbles before pecking her lips, ignoring how she muttered 'that's a first', and stepping back a little. "We've been together for almost three years and I love you so much, I can't see myself with anyone else so... uh, basically what I'm trying to say – er, ask is..." he gets down on one knee and pulls out a velvet box from his apron pocket, "will you marry me?"
She smiles down at him before tackling him to the ground. She hovers over him for a moment before kissing his lips sweetly, ignoring Harry's chuckles because of course, Katelyn is so spontaneous that she'd tackle me to the ground rather than say yes like a normal person. Once she pulls away, she brushes his hair out of his eyes and grins, nodding vigorously.
"You're so cute," he says fondly before retrieving the velvet box that had fell out of his grasp when he was tackled and lifting himself and Katelyn into a sitting position. He removes the diamond ring from its case and slips it onto her slim finger before kissing her knuckles. "Now, let's go conceive a child."
She slaps his chest.
They got married the day of their three year anniversary, and waited a full year before deciding on having a child. And when finding out that their first child would be a girl, Harry was completely ecstatic so much so that he gave the Doctor a huge kiss on the cheek, Katelyn fondly called him an idiot. The name Athena had come from Kate's favourite Greek goddess, the goddess of wisdom.
January twenty-fifth, Harry Styles' little princess was born.
"Harry, oh my God! Harry, come here! She's doing it!" Katelyn shouts from the living room, hands hovering over the one-year-old's stomach and back, watching as her daughter's once wobbly steps turn into a real walk. From the kitchen, comes a crash and a few curse words before Harry's stumbling into the living room with flour all over him. (He had dropped a bag of flour on the floor when she called him.)
He sits a few yards in front of Athena, encouraging her to walk towards him and she does. "Good job, baby!"
"She's growing up so fast," Katelyn says through a smile, crawling over to her husband who is now craddling their little girl. She rests her head on Harry's shoulder, her finger in Athena's grip. "We are some awesome parents, babe."
"You think she'll consider us as cool parents when she's a teenager?" Harry asks, turning his head to press a kiss to his wife's forehead. He meets her eyes, rocking Athena in his arms since she got tired from walking, and grins bashfully.
"Not you but I'll definitely be a cool Mum," Katelyn says only to see that cute pout she loves, the one he'd make after she teases him. She brushes a thumb over his eyebrow, riding some flour from it before cupping his face. "Just kidding, we'll be the coolest."

– Athena & Harry –
Harry believed this day was the third hardest day of the year. His and Katelyn's wedding anniversary. It would've been six years of marriage and nine years of being together today. The fourth hardest would be Katelyn's birthday; it'd leave him curious on what they could've done together as a family and how beautifully she would age. The second hardest day would be Athena's birthday, which is coming up in two months, because he would think of how Katelyn doesn't get to see their child grow – physically, since Harry believes that she is watching them from Heaven – and the first, the day Katelyn got into the fatal accident.
Each of those four days, however, he'd always visit Katelyn's grave. Which is where he was now. Athena was dropped off at Monica's apartment – this was a plan Athena had made to make Harry and Monica talk again, it's been weeks since they have, but unfortunately, Athena didn't know that today was an important day to Harry – and all Harry had said to Monica was "she wanted to see you and Jake" before stepping back further into the hallway, "I have to go somewhere" and then he was gone.
Tracing his fingers along the engraving, his eyes watered but failed to release tears. He's been talking to Katelyn for about ten minutes before having an abrupt silence.
"I remember what you had told me, a few minutes before you passed away," he murmurs softly, fingers still tracing the name Katelyn Leigh Styles over and over again, as if it was her soft skin, he wished it was her soft skin. " You said, 'I want you to find happiness' and for the longest time I hadn't a clue what you meant but, uh, just a few weeks ago I had realized what you meant."
He swallows a lump in his throat.
"The lads had always been telling me that you'd want me to move on, and it was easier said than done because I don't think I'll ever move on from you – I believed you were my soul mate but of course, you'd disagree and say there is no such thing," he chuckles softly before sitting criss-cross beside the stone, "I met this girl Monica a few months ago... Liam and Niall said that I needed her, that she can help me through this and I, I think she has, Kate. I know that if the roles were reversed I'd want you to move on as well, as long as the lad isn't hotter than me," he smiles softly at his teasing, "I think I'm ready for this... I really do. A couple weeks ago, we had almost kissed and I had freaked out. I couldn't do it without talking to you first. I fancy her, I realized this a week too late because Monica is now avoiding me like nobody's business, she is embarrassed I can tell. I know you're probably scolding me right now but I'm slow at this... it's been a while. I just hope you approve, Angel."
He presses a kiss to her first name before whispering, "Happy nine years, Katelyn."
Standing up, he gave one more look to the marble stone before turning away and walking towards his car. Before he got in though, he did one thing: he took off his wedding ring.

(A/N): guys, oh my gosh, he did it. He's ready! Holy crap, holy crap! I am so excited! I hope you are too because some #monarry is coming up! AHHHHHHH!
Importance of Chapter: after giving you some insight of Harry's and Katelyn's relationship, which is to show you how well they meshed together and what Katelyn looked like – as well as her description (Katelyn is played by Aly Michalka). Also, why Athena is named Athena. AND THE MAIN SLICE, how Harry talks to Katelyn and understands what she had meant the day she had passed and that he was ready for the next chapter in his life. He took the major step of removing his wedding ring, which is a dose of reality that she's really gone – which obviously, Harry had accepted – as well as a milestone and a sign that Harry is okay and he might not be completely ready to start the next chapter in his life but is willing to move on and embrace the days to come.
SONG OF CHAPTER: WHEREVER YOU WILL GO – THE CALLING
