The Power of Words

This is my totally unedited essay that is not done but I wondered what you think of it. Please leave ideas/tips in the comments. I literally wrote this off the top of my head in an hour.

I was writing my thesis statement and I was like, 'This is why I'm a creative writer', and I showed it to the girl next to me and she was like 'wow, you're totally a creative writer'. I do love essays though.

It's a thesis on Hitler vs. Churchill's speaking styles.

Adolf Hitler and Sir Winston Churchill were both highly acclaimed public speakers, and they used their abilities to attract millions of people to their causes. Hitler led a whole nation to like-minded violence, with words of a brighter future and promises of a vengeance against their country's downfall in the first World War. Churchill led the Allies in World War Two, along with Franklin Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin. Both of the speakers have great merits, known for their compelling words and spurring testimonies, but Churchill's deliverance and calm, clear use of logic mixed with passion and patriotism, wins out over Hitler's rougher and louder claims.

Adolf Hitler proved his skills in many ways. In 1933 he was named chancellor of Germany, after a long campaign with the Nazi party. Before him, the party was not well known, winning a mere 3% of votes in the 1924 election ballots. Once he was in charge of the government, he essentially turned it into a dictatorship, with full support of the people. The Nazi party took over the government and no one disagreed with his ideas publicly. With his speech presented to the Reichstag on the thirtieth of January, 1939, he made his intentions for the Jewish people clear. "The annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe!" (Yad Vashem), he said, near the conclusion of this address. If you walked into a functioning democracy anywhere else and declared your plan to commit genocide of an entire race, you would be met with harsh disaproval and might even be arrested. This goes to show how much Hitler had used his skills in speaking to persuade the German government otherwise, because not a single protest reached his ears. George Steiner, a French-American novelist, described his voice as "mesmeric ... The amazing thing is that the body comes through on the radio. I can't put it any other way. You feel you're following the gestures" (Macias). Many other witnesses and people close to him concurred on these ideas, claiming him to be one of the greatest speakers they had ever heard.

Winston Churchill, one of the former Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom, was a rival to Hitler's prowess. He was elected many times, in various positions, being chosen by the people of Britain to serve as Prime Minister twice in his life. He delivered a number of famous and impactful speeches, among which are works such as 'We Shall Never Surrender', 'Blood, toil, tears, and sweat', and 'Their Finest Hour'. He was the face of the Allied powers of western Europe during World War Two, and kept up the morale and spirit of Great Britain and other European countries throughout hard times, such as the Blitz bombings of 1940-1941. As stated by the International Churchill Society, when he was young he spoke in a "monotone, without much change in pitch, pace or volume," however, "he understood the power that words, both written and spoken, could have on an audience and was determined to master public speaking." Churchill was highly regarded as an intellectually prominent figure, and this showed in his many speeches, as he provided clear-cut use of logic while still adding emotion and passion in the right places.

They were each so moving in their ways that millions of people of many nationalities followed them and their ideas. Hitler moved an entire country into action, and started WW2, and moved millions to violence. Chruchill, on the other hand, used his speaking to hold up the foundation of the resistance against the Nazi regime. He, along with other leaders of the Allied forces, won the war, saving millions of lives in the process. Hitler's followers described him as mesmerizing, spellbinding, hypnotic, and a political genius, which he no doubt was. Morally, most would consider the practice of stealing innocents from their homes, murdering them, pillaging their businesses, and sending them to death camps as wrong, yet Hitler had the entire country of Germany participate in dooming millions of Jews to these fates and worse. Churchill was known for his inspiring words and his way of inciting hope and patriotism among the defending lines of the Allied soldiers, who ultimately won the war against Nazi Germany and the other Axis powers. Those who backed him spoke of hope, victory, and consolement to be found in his words, the words that inspired soldiers of many nations to rise up and defend the countries of the world. He defeated Hitler in the battle between militaries and emotion, his words rose above those of Hitler's, inspiring his countrymen and others to keep fighting, and never surrender.

Churchill has proven himself superior in many ways. He won the war against Nazi Germany and the Axis powers, he delivered speech after speech, gaining new allies and strengthening old ones, and ultimately he had a bigger impact on the lives, thoughts, emotions, and ethics of his audience. Churchill is someone to remember, teaching us how to fight for what we believe in, both on the field of battle, and in the world of rhetoric.
