Off To Grandma's House
Alexandra POV, 5 years ago_
The Indian woman gave me this look as if she expected me to rob her or something. "Your grandma?," Her head quickly spun around and she whispered something very quietly.
"Come in, darling." Puffing my cheeks up and letting out a long sigh in protest, I replied "How can I trust you?" "You're grandmother is very sick, she does not quite know who you are." A tan reclining chair by a small TV on a bookshelf and a few other chairs were 2 rooms away.
There sat Grandma, with a pale face and pleading hazel eyes. "Why does this kid look familiar to me?" She suddenly said in a raspy voice. "I'm your granddaughter," I explained holding Michelle close to my face.
"Can you fix Spencer's doll?" Her gaze went past me to the other girl. "And why is she here?" My jaw dropped open. But she has always been excited to see me! "Grandma, please-"
My upper lip quivered a little as I waited for a response; in the kind of silence that you could 'hear a pin drop on the floor'. Moments and moments passed, so I decided I should leave. "Thanks a lot." I frowned at the tall woman. "Wait-" Her hand hovered over my left shoulder.
"Let me explain. Please?" Looking down, I nearly choked out, "Go ahead." Then she began. "My name is Lana Tatum. I- I met your grandmother a long time ago; when I was a nurse and she was one of my patients. Remember when she broke her rib 4 years ago? That's when.
Last week I came to visit her to see how she had repaired, and she told me that she could not remember who I am or what her own name is. After trying to lure her to go to the hospital so many times, after she could not remember who her own daughter is, your mom, I decided to help her.
And now I have to try to make her believe every morning that I'm her second daughter. Yes, I know I'm not, but I do not want her to be frightened of me"
I was still confused "So then what's wrong with her now?"
"She has Alzheimer's disease." "Disease?" Lana gave me a nod. "It's when there is something in her brain.. That makes her forget lots and lots of things." He mouth seemed to move faster than the words came out. Maybe there is more to it than just that, and she's just picking her words carefully?
"Lana, do you think she can fix my doll?" The reason I was here is to find out an answer in the first place. "Ask her" She replied.
Once I walked down the creaky floorboards to Grandma's recliner, she beamed me a quick smile that instantly turned back into a frown. "Who are you?" "You already asked-" I just then remembered. She wouldn't remember that she asked!
With my fakest, gentlest, smile I said, "I'm you're granddaughter. My name is Alexandra Patenés." It took about three seconds until she opened her arms up wide and genuinely smiled. "I know you!"
I let myself fall into her arms and hug her. She pushed me back and said "I remember who you are- but why are you still here?" "I need you to fix...
My doll or Spencer's? What should I say?
-I need you to fix my doll. Her shoes got wet!" Pointing to the red and blue- stained 'shoes', Lana soon came in sight with paper, color, scissors, and different crafting supplies.
"Tell me, Alexandra, what is the name of this pretty little doll?" "Mi-chelle!" I pronounced ecstatically. Grandma studied the doll carefully. "Michelle, eh? Lovely." "Thanks.."
Out of a maroon bucket she grabbed a long strand of little cups of different paint colors. There was white, blue, black, red, and yellow. The red one first got opened.
Taking a large paintbrush, I watched every movement she made with her shaky, wrinkled, little hands and focused, big eyes made. Up, down, up, down, the letter M was made on the front of it's clothes "GRANDMA! That doll is important to me!" I cried.
"Dear, the older you get, the less important it will become. Focus on the letters of each name you speak, and your brain will learn, itself, to become smarter and smarter. And just remember-
M is for Michelle."
