5: Bare footed things
"I can't believe we got stuck patrolling the preserve..." Liam murmurs as he looks around the woods, his yellow eyes shining in the darkness. Kira sighs softly and she gives the younger Beta a look and she shakes her head slightly.
"Can you please stop complaining? That's all you've done since Scott told us to come out here." She says and Liam just gives her an unamused look.
"I don't remember you being this uptight." Liam says a little under his breath, earning a scoff from Kira. She stops in her tracks and she turns to look at Liam and she sighs.
"I'm not the same person as I was back then. I've changed- I've endured things you and the others wouldn't even know how to comprehend. I get the job done and I don't complain about it. Maybe you should take notes." Kira sneers and she flashes her fiery orange kitsune eyes at Liam- His own eyes widening with both shock and fear. He holds his hands up in surrender and without another word he starts walking again, side by side with the fox. They don't see anything, but the smells that were once familiar to them both, now smell foreign and more toxic. The air isn't as tolerable as it used to be, the oak trees and pine trees that once held so much power in the air, now smells like their rotting. The vibrant greens of the preserve are fading to stale, lifeless greys.
"I don't like this... whatever this new evil is.. its draining the life out of everything. Literally." Liam points out and Kira slowly nods her head. "Seems like it... I think you need to call Scott and tell him he needs to see this in person. This isn't something that can be taken in by pictures...." Kira says and turns to look at Liam, who is already pulling his phone from his jacket pocket. He slides his thumb along his lock pattern and he goes straight to his call log.
Just as he places the phone to his ear and the ringing starts, a screaming gust of wind blows so hard the pair has trouble keeping their balance on the ground. Kira reaches for Liam who has dropped the phone and is frantically looking around the ground for it.
"Just great!" Liam growls, his anger growing rather quickly- Something he has never been able to get control of. Once he finds the phone, he bends down to grab it, but before his fingers curl around the device, a large clawed foot stomps right on it and a sinister laugh comes from above him.
"Liam!" Kira yells, instantly pulling her belt from her pant loops and she snaps her swords tip against the ground once it's assembled and a crack of thunder emits from the ground and zaps the bare footed creature a few feet away.
Liams breathing was now hard and he and Kira are now standing side by side, each facing a different direction. They slowly turn and they listen closely and soon they find themselves fighting for their lives.
Multiple bare footed creatures are coming at them from every direction, full force and out for blood. Even with Liams constant online training with video games, even he wasn't prepared for something like this. Kira was handling her own, she's dealt with worse. Way worse. She could also tell Liam was having trouble with keeping up so she even picked up his slack. The problem at hand though, these things don't fucking die. Every time she takes one out, a few minutes later they get back up.
"I can't- I can't do this!" Liam yelps as the creatures start piling on top of him, large prehistoric like claws collide with his chest over and over and blood starts pooling out of his mouth. Kira sparks up her fox fire and with one loud scream and a fierce crack of thunder, she manages to send them all flying a few feet away in a perfect circle around them, giving the two just enough time to make a run for it.
Kira wastes no time, instantly throwing Liam over her shoulder and using her fox speed to get back to the car. "Stay with me, Liam! Stay with me!" She breathes out as she lays him in the back seat. Just as she sits down in the driver's side, the demons appear in her front view. She scowls deeply, her hands grip the steering wheel and with a quick slam of her foot on the gas pedal, she flies right towards them and drives right through them, taking the fastest route to the vet clinic.
Liams call to Scott wasn't a failure either, he heard enough to put two and two together and he also heard enough to know that the two of them got out. Liams phone may have been cracked, but it didn't lose service or disconnect the call. Scott hung the phone up and looked at the rest of his pack and he swallows thickly before he says...
"We have to get to the clinic now."
