The War of the Dead
Vampires and witches were not to come for some two thousand years after the birth of Triton, created by Hades and Hecate in an effort to defend against the power of dryads, werewolves and merfolk.
Hades had kidnapped the goddess Demeter's daughter Persephone to take her as his wife. Demeter tried to get her daughter back, first demading it, then deciding to starve the human population of the earth until Hades gave Persephone back. He refused.
The famine lasted for years, and the other gods began to get involved, standing against Hades. Still he refused. The gods gave up on negotiations and waged war on Hades, using all their forces against his army of the dead.
He knew he could not win alone, and he and his ally Hecate, goddess of magic, created witches and vampires, gifting them with abilities far beyond that of a human's. At the beginning, the war was focused on forcing Hades to return Persephone, but it quickly descended into utter war on Hades, its only goal to force him into submission, becoming a total bloodbath, neither side gaining ground.
Eventually Hestia and Aphrodite stepped in, and using their power, they formed the unique bond between all* the various supernatural races' individuals, a bond now known as the mate bond. It was successful in ending the war, and resulted in peace. Hestia persuaded Hades and Demeter to come to an agreement regarding Persephone and allow her stay with Hades for a third of the year and with Demeter for the remaining two thirds.
After many years, witches and vampires were allowed to inhabit the Overworld, but were exiled to certain countries, the witches in what was to become the British Isles and vampires to future Siberia, which was a harsh environment even back then.
Both races struggled to survive, their resourcefulness pushed to their limits. The gods' laws on migration of witches and vampires were relaxed after a couple thousand years and vampires migrated both westward, towards Eastern Europe, and east to Alaska and Canada which brought them into conflict with werewolves.
Witches, on the other hand, were mainly content to remain in the (future) British Isles, travelling the country in groups, offering advice and healing to those who needed it, and unlike vampires, they became the most trusted race, despite their harsh representation in human literature.
*It is not unclear if sirens were present during the war against Hades but it is assumed not as Aphrodite was one of the main peacemakers of the war. However, they received the gift of the mate bond.
