The First Beings

Billions of years ago, the universe came into being, born out of the divine being known as Chaos, and creating the stars and other planetary bodies that our existence consists of. In due time, the Earth was formed, and with it Gaia and Ouranus, who reigned over the Earth and sky.

Out of Chaos, Nyx was also conceived, the personification of the night, along with Erebus (the personification of darkness). They had several children together including; Hemera, the personification of day; Thanatos, the personification of death; the Moirai (the Three Fates); and Apate, personification of deceit and lies.

Gaia and Ouranus also had many children, chief among them the Titans. Around this time, the first humans emerged, created by the Titan, Prometheus out of clay. Ouranus was eventually banished to the sky, his physical form murdered by Gaia. Where his blood soaked into the ground, tree nymphs, also known as dryads sprung up, first and oldest of the supernatural races.

Their gruesome origin has often led to poor portrayals in human folk tales, often depicted as wicked spirits which seek to confuse and disorientate travellers, or beautiful women who are responsible for luring men and women so deep into the forests they can no longer escape. A more likely proposition is that the dryads fell in love with humans (the existence of mates was not around then) but could not abide life in human society so the latter chose to instead remain with their lovers in the forest, rather than return.

Of Gaia and Ouranus' offspring, Kronos and Rhea are best known, being parents of the gods.

The first and foremost of the children born to them was Hestia, goddess of the hearth and home. Then there was Demeter, goddess of the harvest and agriculture. Hera was third, goddess of motherhood, marriage, and the family.

Hades, the first son, was next, god of the underworld and the dead. Fifth was Poseidon, god of the sea, storms, and horses, and last was Zeus, god of the sky, lightning, and thunder.

By Zeus' birth, Kronos had become a tyrant, ruling over the universe with an iron fist. He had even gone so far as to swallow all the previous offspring Rhea had given him, due to a prophecy that his children would overthrow him. However, Rhea hid Zeus on the island of Crete until he reached maturity, deceiving her husband with a fake baby made of rock.

Eventually, Zeus was able to defeat his father and his father's allies, resulting in peace and harmony throughout the Earth. The six gods formed the Olympian Council and swore to rule justly and honourably over the earth, freeing it from all remaining influence of Kronos, as well as promising to remain loyal to to eachother over humans, who they rightfully saw as lesser beings.

Zeus had a pair of twins, Artemis and Appollo with Leto, a Titan (His wife, Hera, found out about Leto's pregnancy and gave her a difficult birth). Artemis became the goddess of the hunt and the moon; she granted her followers immortality in exchange for their permanent celibacy. The penalty of losing their virginity was a curse that meant they would be transformed into the body of a wolf.

If they could survive ten years without being hunted down by humans or Artemis, then the curse would be adjusted so that they could choose when to shift into a wolf. However, they would be given a second consciousness, that of a wolf, which was reliant on its instincts and could be a blessing or a curse. In this way, werewolves came to be.
