Book 9- Chapter 2- The Missing chlamys
"P-eer-cy, " a shrill, high-pitched voice shrieked. "P-eer-cy."
A pair of wide, vacant eyes met Reyna's when she descended the path down to the beach. Reyna lifted her lamp to see a pale, oval face with a slack, stupid expression framed by loose, flaxen hair.
"P-eer-cy."
"Zeus's cock!" Thalia shouted. "What's happened to her?"
She grabbed hold of the distracted figure's shoulders and shook her before slapping her cheek. Annabeth momentarily regained her senses before collapsing into Jason's arms. Piper uncorked the small flask of wine that hung from her girdle and held it to Annabeth's lips.
Reyna looked the princess over. She seemed like someone coming out of a drunken stupor but otherwise appeared to be unharmed.
"What happened to you?" Jason said to Annabeth.
"Don't you hear it?" She replied.
"Hear what?" Piper added.
"Percy's calling for me."
"I don't hear anything."
Thalia snapped her fingers in front of Annabeth's face to dispel the remaining glamor.
"Piper, " Reyna said. "Was Annabeth wearing a black chlamys when you last saw her?"
"Yes, " Piper replied.
Annabeth was not wearing a black chlamys at the present moment.
"We saw someone with flaxen hair and a black chlamys run down to the beach, " Nico said. "I could have sworn that was Annabeth."
Cries and whimpers of pain coming from the direction of the beach reminded them of why they had been in such a hurry.
Reyna had seen plenty of gruesome sights on the battlefield but what she saw on Ogygia beach ranked with the worst of them. A small, delicate body lay spread out in the sand. The clothes has been torn from it. It's left side was sliced open and the right breast was ripped clean off. Only by the slight rise and fall of the chest could you tell it was still alive.
Will, Hazel, Leo, Calypso, and Aphrodisia must have also heard the commotion. Aphrodisia rushed to the victim's side and began to weep against Hazel's shoulder when she noticed who it was.
Athenaíí's pale, little face looked blank and distant. Her long, flaxen hair was clotted with gore. She whimpered, moaned, and sobbed like dog who had been beaten.
Will found the missing chlamys clasped in the dying girl's hand. He used it to cover her nakedness.
"The lioness," Athenaíí said. "She was stalking Princess Annabeth in the hills. I took Princess Annabeth's chlamys when she wasn't looking so the lioness would catch her scent and stalk me instead."
Annabeth took her hand and kissed it. Her tears washed some of the blood off of Athenaíí's fingers.
"Why did you do this?" Annabeth said. "You dear, foolish girl."
"Your life is precious." Athenaíí's breathing became labored. "Mine is not."
"That's not true," Piper added. "You had so much to live for..."
"Oh, leave off!" Reyna said. "It's bad enough the poor thing is dying with out you chattering nonsense at her."
Athenaíí was clever and brave, not a silly, useless thing like Piper. Piper should have been mauled instead of her.
"I'm not scared to die," Athenaíí continued. "This life never offered me very much. Maybe the next life will be better? Aphrodisia..."
The gangly, awkward slave sat down at her friend's side.
"...I'm sorry I was always so hard on you..."
Aphrodisia broke down crying while Will closed Athenaíí's eyes. A bronze obol was placed beneath her tongue.
"Go get her lyre and the rest of her things," Hazel said to Piper and Calypso. The men went to gather wood for a funeral pyre.
As the sullen, little slave's body crackled and disintegrated in the flames, Reyna hoped that her soul had found peace.
"She was born a slave but she died a heroine," Jason said.
The slack, stupid expression returned to Annabeth's face. She stared into the fire and her eyes grew wide and vacant again.
"P-eer-cy," she shrieked.
