Chapter 2
"Hey, can you do me another favor?" Sketch asked, walking up to Mitch.
"Yeah?" Mitch forced himself to draw his attention away from Jerome and Sub.
Sketch held out the rest of Sub's pumpkin pie. "Can you deliver this to ShadShine castle? Sub and I have to clean up, and he'll get mad if he sees not everyone ate the pie he almost burned the house down for, soo..."
"No problem," Mitch said, taking the pie. "I haven't visited ShadShine Castle in a while, anyway. I'm sure they'll like it."
"Thanks!" Sketch gave a sigh of relief. "Now, uh, take Jerome and go, before Sub sees the pie."
"Yup," Mitch obeyed. "Jerome!"
Jerome stopped in his tracks, allowing Sub to flee out the front door. "Aw, come on! I almost had him!" He whined.
"We're going to ShadShine to deliver a pie," Mitch declared.
"Alright, then," Jerome said with a shrug, following Mitch out the door.
"Where did Sub go?" Mitch asked, looking around once they were outside.
"I think he flew off..." Jerome said with a frown. "Should I go look for him?" He looked up at the sky, unfolding his wings and taking a fish out of his pocket.
"You are vile," Mitch half-joked, staring at the fish in his pocket.
The two friends made their way back through the town, except this time they headed past the forest, farther north. In the distance, up a large hill, a castle was visible.
"Y'know, it'd be easier just to fly up there..." Jerome muttered as they began to follow the path up the hill.
"Well, unless you wanna carry me and the pie up there, we're walking," Mitch declared.
"Fine," Jerome sighed, though Mitch knew he wasn't actually mad.
"Did you eat any of this stuff?" Mitch asked, looking down at the pie, which only had three slices taken. Poor Sub. Almost burned his house down for nothing.
"Nah," Jerome said, patting his fish pocket.
Soon, they made their way to the top of the hill. Outside the castle was a miniature park, with benches and even a fancy-looking obsidian fountain in the middle.
The castle itself looked just like you would expect a castle to look like. Constructed mostly of solid gray stone bricks, although gold and obsidian were mixed into the design nicely, the occasional yellow or dark purple brick standing out here and there.
Mitch and Jerome approached the two large wooden doors and opened, entering ShadShine castle. It was a big but rather quiet place. The room they stepped into was long and empty, with a dark purple carpet stretched from the door to the base of a golden staircase.
Fortunately, for those who were lazy (this included Mitch and Jerome), at the bottom of the staircase was a large, violet gem hovering above a slab of bedrock. A convenient invention called an endercrystal that allowed easy teleportation. This one in particular led straight to the top floor, skipping any other rooms found along the gold staircase.
"I'm tired of walking up things, anyway," Jerome admitted as both of them places a hand on the crystal. In a puff of purple smoke and a small moment of dizziness, Mitch and Jerome appeared at the top of the staircase next to another endercrystal.
At the top floor was a room smaller than the first floor. There were three doors; two large, tall double-doors patterned with purple and yellow squares, with a smaller golden door to the left and a dark purple door of equal size on the right.
Mitch and Jerome walked straight forward through the large double-doors, into a smaller room with a small yet fancy-looking table and two chairs. The two chairs were occupied, and the two people turned as they heard the door open.
"Mitch, Jerome!" Greeted one of them cheerfully, a man with dark brown hair and shades. He wore shiny-looking, gray armor-like clothes and had large, golden wings the same color as his eyes.
"Haven't seen you two in a while," The other man mused. He had dark brown sidebangs and a pair of black and purple headphones. He was dressed in a simple white shirt with black marks around the sleeves, gray pants, and dark purple bracelets on each wrist. A pair of large, black and purple dragon wings sprouted from his back, complete with a black, dragonlike tail and long black horns.
Adam and Ty, the God and Devil of the Overworld. Stories and legends said that the two used to be much scarier back in the day, but now they just looked pretty cool, in Mitch's opinion. He would've loved a dragon tail like Ty's.
"We come with an offering of pie," Jerome declared loudly.
"Pie?" Adam brightened.
"Sub made it," Mitch told him, walking over to the table where Adam and Ty sat and placing the pie before them.
"God bless Sub," Ty praised.
"I will," Adam joked.
"Shut up."
It was sometimes hard to believe these two had led and fought a world-shattering war against each other.
"Thanks for the pie, though," Adam said with a grin.
"Thank Sub," Jerome shrugged.
"Well, where is he?" Ty asked curiously.
Mitch and Jerome paused.
"Long story, actually..." Mitch said sheepishly.
"You know what, I don't wanna know," Ty said, holding up his hands. "A pie is a pie."
"And this is a pie," Adam confirmed, staring the poor pie down hungrily.
"Well, we'll leave you to it, then!" Mitch said.
"We shall give Sub all of your thanks," Jerome announced with a fake bow.
The large doors soon closed behind the two friends.
"...They're nice kids," Ty said, looking at the door.
"You know what else is nice, Ty?" Adam asked. "Pie."
Ty snorted. "Then eat it, idiot."
Before Adam could reply, a new angel appeared in front of the table in a small flash.
"Oh, hi Jason!" Adam said to the angel. "You're just in time for some pie. Want some?"
Jason blinked. "Hah, um, maybe later," He politely turned down the offer.
Jason had rustled, light brown hair and calm, blue eyes. He wore a light blue formal suit with a darker tie, and had a pair of pale blue wings.
"What's wrong?" Ty frowned, noticing Jason's uneasiness.
"Er, there's some updated info on those...structures that have been popping up lately," Jason reported.
"The structures..." Ty muttered. Lately, strange obsidian structures, always formed in the shape of a 0, had been appearing at random across the land. Nobody knew where they had come from, or who had built them.
"You see, they're not actually structures," Jason explained. "They're portals."
"To where?" Adam asked.
"We're not sure yet," Jason admitted. "An unknown creature was spotted entering the portal. The space inside the obsidian was a bright, swirly purple. Soon after it entered, the purple part disappeared."
"Did you find out how to bring the purple back?" Adam asked.
"No," Jason replied. "We're pretty sure that whatever entered that portal destroyed it from the other side once they entered."
"What went into the portal, anyway?" Ty asked.
Jason sighed. "We're not sure. Nothing from the Overworld, no doubt. Maybe ask Ant, he got a better look at it."
"Alright," Ty said, sitting back in his chair. "Thanks for the update."
"Anytime," Jason replied. "Enjoy your pie." He disappeared again with another flash moments later.
There was silence for a couple moments after Jason left.
"...What do you think?" Ty asked, turning back to Adam.
"Of what?" Adam asked through a mouthful of pie.
"You know, the portals and the weird creatures?" Ty pressed. "Do you think it's trouble?"
Adam grinned. "I'm not sure yet. But whatever it is, we can take them."
Ty frowned. "That's a bit...careless, don't you think?"
Adam shrugged. "Well, we protect this world, right? Anything that tries to take us on will regret it."
"We don't know what we could be up against, though," Ty said uneasily.
"We don't know if we're even up against anything," Adam pointed out.
Ty frowned, but said nothing.
"Look, we're strong. This world is strong," Adam sighed. "You're worrying too much."
"What if something really does happen, though?" Ty asked.
Adam paused. "Well...I think that you know better than anybody what happens when someone tries to go up against me." There was a gleam of mischief in his eye.
Ty raised an eyebrow. "Ditto."
The conversation soon ended as the two began to eat their pie.
