Sandy's with her grandmother, while Sodapop can barely concentrate on life with the events that just took place. First, his parents die, then his oldest brother slaps his youngest, causing him to run away. This all happened around the same time.

The last words Sodapop heard before the girl he was sure he was gonna marry stepped out of his life like a plane taking off at an airport.

"I just let her in my life and she leaves like it's nothing. I wanted to marry her." Soda vented to his brother with sad eyes.  "I'm sorry, Little buddy," Darry put his hand on his shoulder and gave a sad smile.
"But she just doesn't love you like you loved her." 

Soda knew this was true. He tried so hard to deny it, but he can't it's just something that
you gotta accept, whether you like it or not.
