Chapter 18
I decided to make some french toast because I was actually hungry for once.
I took two pieces off and ate them then Dally walked in. "Hey Dal." I greeted him.
"Hey Pone whacha makin?" He asked looking over to the pan.
"French toast did you want some?" I offered. "Yeah I'm stavin." He smiled.
"Here you can just have these two pieces." I flipped the pieces over so they could cook on that side.
"Did you have any?" He asked and I was surprised he cared. "Yeah I ate some. But I'm not hungry anymore." I lied. I really was hungry but I could go awhile without eating.
"Ya know I've noticed you don't eat a lot man." He pointed out. I froze. "I'm just not hungry a lot." It was true I wasn't.
There was an awkward silence. "Do you think Soda misses me?" I asked changing the subject.
"Yeah, he probably does but it's nice bein away from er'thing don't you agree?" He replied.
"Yeah, I guess." I set his pieces on a plate and handed it to him. "I picked up some Pepsi and cigarettes if you want some." He told me sitting at the table.
"Sure." I said grabbing a Pepsi. I sat across from him. There was another awkward silence.
"Hey Dal can I ask you somethin?" He looked up from his food. "Sure man, what's up?" He continued to eat.
I was going to tell him how I felt about Johnny. "You can't get mad okay?" I had to be sure.
"Okay." He said while chewing his food. "I-you're gonna be mad." I threw my head onto the table. I knew being gay was wrong but I liked girls too.
"Blast it, just spit it out man." He snapped still eating food. "No. Just forget it." I sighed resting my head on my hand.
"Okay?" He gave me a questioning look. "Ya know that Soc Cherry has a major crush on ya." I smiled at him.
"That broad from the drive in?" He smirked. "Yup. She told me while we were walking home." I told him while finishing my Pepsi.
"Yeah she was real nice. Ya savvy good?" He threw his plate away. They were paper because we hated doing dishes.
I nodded and we put the food away. "Pony, ya miss Johnny?" Dally asked looking down.
"Yeah I really do." I frowned. "Why?" I asked him. "Cause I miss em more than I've ever missed anyone." He looked real sad.
"He left me a note." I told him. "What?" He looked up at me with glassy eyes. "Yeah. Did ya wanna see it?" I asked and half smiled.
"Yeah, I do." He looked down again. I went upstairs to my suitcase and grabbed Gone With The Wind. I opened it and the note fell out.
I ran back downstairs. "Here." I handed it too him. He held it and started shaking. "N-no. Oh...oh my God. He-he knew he wasn't gon make it. Poor kid." He set the note on the table in front of the couch.
"I can't do this Ponyboy. I can't be here when my best friend is gone. I can't-I can't live without em." He started bawling.
"You don't just stop livin cause you loose somebody!" I yelled realizing what Darry meant when he said that to me.
Dally looked up at me. "Ponyboy you don't understand...he's all I had left, I don't wanna live without him I can't even look at myself I should have never sent y'all to that church."
"You have me and the gang. Dal we all love you don't blame what happened at the church on yourself I should have never ran in there if it's your fault then it's mine too." I said on the verge of crying.
"Y-yeah I guess your right. Thanks Pony. I'm headin to bed you wanna stay in the same room I like the company." He whiped his eyes.
"Sure." I tried to smile but all that came out was a soft sob. We walked upstairs and got into bed.
