Chapter 27

According to Emily's latest calculations, the Greek planet had originally been within the habitable zone of the Cancri star system based on what was seen on the original computer from the Antuhsas colony ship. However, sometime after that was recorded, something had shunted the planet out of the habitable zone and removed the moon. Emma wanted to know what that was, because there may still be technology to salvage on the surface of that planet. Technology that would help them live better and safer.

Right now, most of the effort was being spent on exploring every stray Antuhsas ship that was anywhere in the system to find more of the memory sticks and turn them over to their little furred neighbors. There was a chance that they might be overwhelmed with the information, but Pepper didn't want to hold anything back. Aubree and Lexi were with the Antuhsas all the time, helping them work through things, while many others were working with them to help with learning the basics. There was no rush to get them technologically advanced, but now that they knew they could do it, they were eager to try. As a part of that, Lena and Miles were planning on bringing several of the foxes up into orbit over the next few days to get them used to being in space, and then they were going to spacewalk a few times before they went into the wreckage of the original colony ship.

Emma didn't envy them that.

But with all that going on, Emma was trying something different. The old human planet was currently on the far side of the sun, though once every 16 months or so it would be much closer to the gas giant that their moon orbited. For now, though, Emma wanted to go see it and see what was left. Thankfully, with the speed of her little ship, it didn't take long.

It wasn't pretty. The planet looked oddly off center but was still rotating. It didn't take her long to realize that the moon hadn't disappeared at all, but had crashed into the planet which made what appeared to be a big hump on the surface. But what could have caused that?

"Lena, are you around?" she called out in her comm gear.

There was a moment of silence before Miles came on sounding a little out of breath. "Umm... Lena is a little busy." Emma could hear moaning in the background, and she knew very well what her sister was busy doing.

She had to laugh though, because while her sister had always had a high sex drive, she was even worse now that she was pregnant, and it seemed like every hour that they were going at it. "Miles, when you and Lily are done with her, can you have her get a hold of me? I need a favor."

"Yep. Just give us an hour," He replied before she heard Lena' muffled protest. "Or two."

Yeah, she was on her own. With a sigh, she started circling the planet, trying to identify anything that might be useful. It still had an atmosphere, though the temperature readings were much lower than most life would survive with. All of the water remaining on the planet had frozen, and there were deep seas of ice on the side away from where the moon had impacted it. Could anything have lived on the surface if the moon had crashed into the planet? It seemed unlikely, but that was the kind of science that she'd have to take to someone else.

The bigger questions were, how did the foxes move the planet? And why? And what would happen if it was moved back? Hell, for that matter, was it even possible to do that? In theory, the planet once supported life, so if it could be moved back, then maybe it could again, though with the odd shape it could be unstable and have an odd orbit. Emma idly wondered if there was any information on terraforming in the databases that they had information on. If so, maybe they could make the planet inhabitable again. Not to mention, they could probably reintroduce animals from Earth that were endangered, since there would no longer be any native wildlife. Perhaps that could work?

Of course, none of that was feasible unless they could actually move an entire planet. Piece of cake.

As she examined the planet, the readings showed that the atmosphere contained everything they would need for life, it would just need to become quite a bit warmer. Odds are that all kinds of particles had been thrown up when the moon crashed into the planet, and that had ruined all of the life there along with what must have been immense earthquakes and insanely severe weather. Flying to the far side of the planet, where hopefully the devastation would have been lessened, she started scanning the surface, hoping to find things that might have survived the downfall of the planet's civilization.

The scans indeed showed structures, several of which appeared to be the remains of large cities. Feeling bold, Emma entered the atmosphere, then flew down, wanting to get a closer look at what remained. Moving carefully, she piloted the ship towards one of the large cities at the equator and then slowly maneuvered between the tall buildings that were stunningly still standing. Were they made of the same material as the spaceships had been? Yes, the buildings showed damage, but it was mostly pitting, broken windows and occasional structural damage that wasn't nearly as catastrophic as it would have been were everything made of concrete and other Earth materials.

"Emma, do you still need anything?" Lena had finally replied, and Emma smiled at the languid tone in her sister's voice. She'd obviously been well satisfied!

"Did you have a good time dear sister?"

"Fuck yes! I love Miles and Lily, and damn do they know how to take care of me. I should have known you'd find a third too, you're just like me."

The thought of Viv and Lexi brought a smile to her face, and she couldn't help but agree with Lena. Maybe it was just their DNA that made them want to have a big, loving relationship. "You're not wrong about that. But as far as the help, that wasn't what I needed any pointers with."

"Ha! You say that now, but if you saw us together, you'd take notes." Lena snickered into the comms.

"Fine, fine, you're the best. But can we be serious for a minute?" Emma begged. "I just need to know if any of the Antuhsas ships you found wreckage of had the displays that showed the historical radar time lapses." Emma had loved seeing those when they'd gotten a tour of the colony ship and was hoping there was one that might show the battle here in this solar system and what had happened to the planet.

"Yeah, the destroyers do, but we haven't tried going back on them. What are you looking for?"

"I want to know what caused the moon to crash into the human planet. If we can move it back closer to the sun, then sooner or later maybe the planet will be able to support life again," Emma explained.

Lena was silent for a minute before replying. "I'll check it out. I have no idea if we can move an entire planet, but it does sound like something that would be cool to try."

"It might not be, but if we could get it back in its old orbit, then maybe we could have another home. We could even get some endangered species from Earth and see if we could get them living there. Hell, we could make the entire planet a nature preserve." Emma was getting excited about the prospect but knew it might be a while before any of that was even possible. Even if they got the planet moved, it could be generations before it was able to sustain life.

But they had to start somewhere, right?

While they talked, Emma kept flying through the city, making sure to record everything for later review. There was so much to see that she'd want to go over everything later to make sure that she hadn't flown right past something important without realizing it. But then she flew past another long building, and her breath caught in her throat.

Laying on its side, like a row of mountains, was a spaceship. It was just like the one that had been found floating around Uranus, but this one was whole. The long piece that made it look like a lollipop was still attached to this one, unlike the wreckage that she'd visited so many times. Was it still able to fly? She slowly made several circuits of the ship, making sure to scan and record every exposed surface. There was more that was partially covered, but for the first time the engines of the immense craft were visible, and they were impressive. There were thirteen engines arranged in two rings of six plus a larger one in the middle. Even the outer ones looked larger in diameter than the bigger ships that they'd already found, but the center one was about the size of four of them. It was glorious.

"Lena!" she said breathlessly into the comm unit. "Lena, get on here!"

"Damn girl, what gas your panties in a bunch?"

Normally, Emma would make a joke there, perhaps something about not wearing panties, but she was too excited about what she was seeing. "I found a ship. I found a fucking ship!"

Lena snorted, not quite understanding. "We have ships already, sis. That isn't exactly news."

"No! Fuck! Don't say that. I found one of the big ones! The fucking huge one!"

Lena was silent on the other end of the line, her heart pounding crazily. Finally, she was able to answer once she'd gotten herself under control. "Are you serious?"

"Completely! I have no idea if it is functioning, but it doesn't have any visible damage, so it might be. Can you see if you can get a team together and come here? We'll need a bunch of suits too."

"Fuck yes! We're on the way!"
