The Substitute
AN: Sorry! I had a severe case of writers block when I was making this chapter. It's more of a filler than anything. The next one should be much more interesting.
The above pic is just one of the few I found that I think fits Anna. I'm not really clear on what the actress/model's name is. The pic isn't a perfect match by any means but it's really the best I good do for now.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
-The Next Morning-
Just because Severus was subbing for the Lupins as a favor to Anna, didn't mean he had to like it. Even though it was Anna who had asked, he didn't like feeling like he was helping the mutt. He was still cross about the Boggart incident. However, he had a plan to get the Granger girl to figure out Remus' secret.
The Slytherin could only hope that Anna wouldn't kill him for it.
-With Harry-
As if Harry wasn't worried enough about his aunt's Quidditch incident, she hadn't shown up for breakfast that morning.
He wondered if, perhaps, his aunt had been worse off than he thought.
The more he worried, the guiltier he felt.
He was angry at himself. Somehow, everything seemed to be HIS fault. All he could think is how if he wasn't so useless, people (mainly Anna) wouldn't have to risk their life to safe him while he stood there like a damsel in distress. Harry was determined. The next time a Dementor came across his path HE would handle it. He didn't care how hard the spell was to master. He needed to fight his fear.
Of course, he didn't say any of this out loud to his friends. He knew they would disagree and say it wasn't his fault. And maybe that was true about the Dementor thing. But it was his third year at Hogwarts in which someone was trying to kill him and he was starting to realize that things could only get worse from here.
He looked up from his breakfast and saw that his friends were looking at him, "What?" Hermione looked concerned, "Harry, you've barely touched your food. I know you are worried about Anna, but she's fine. Madam Pomfrey fixed her up. Remember?" "Then why isn't she here?"
Ron shrugged, "You saw how Professor Lupin acted around her on the train when she was sick. I bet he made her take a sick day. I wouldn't worry about it, mate. You know how Anna is. She's bloody invincible!" Harry sighed, "Yeah, you're probably right."
-Defense Against the Dark Arts-
Of course Harry had to be late to DADA the one day Professor Snape was the substitute. He had been pretty sure Uncle Remus (he would have to get used to calling him that) wouldn't be teaching, but he had hoped Anna would get a nicer substitute, like Hagrid.
After taking several points from Gryffindor, Snape went on to tell them they would be studying werewolves, even though they weren't supposed to learn about those until much later in the year. Hermione, of course, protested. She attempted to tell the Potions Master that they were actually supposed to be learning about Hinkypinks , but Snape was hearing none of it. He took off more points away from the house of bravery.
The class only got worse from there. Detentions were handed out, points were taken, and the dark haired openly expressed his hatred for Remus throughout the entire 'lesson.' Harry nearly lost it.
Though he had previously thought Remus was a bit peculiar and strange when they and first met, Harry was really starting to think of him as family. He wouldn't say the Professor was a parent to him, like Anna sort of was, he suspected that, with time, that could change. So, Harry didn't really appreciate Snape insulting Remus. Especially since the man wasn't half as good of a Professor as his uncle was.
To make it worse, Snape ended the class by assigning a two page essay, which drew a collective groan from the class. Ron seemed to agree as he ranted to his friends, "Can you believe that? We're supposed to write TWO whole pages on a subject we only just started! Is he mad? How are we supposed to describe how to recognize and kill a werewolf in detail if we haven't been taught?!"
Hermione nodded in agreement, "I thought it was unprofessional to talk about another professor the way he did, too. I've never seen him hate someone so much. Not even Lockhart." Harry frowned, "Why does Snape hate Remus?" Ron shrugged, "Who knows? Do you think we really have to do that essay?" Harry shook his head, "I doubt Anna and Remus would make us." "You should stop by and ask," said Ron, "You could explain to them what happened. I bet Anna will be furious." Harry nodded, "Alright."
He supposed it couldn't hurt to try.
Instead of going to lunch, Harry headed to the teacher's dorms. He said the password and knocked. Harry opened it and smiled, slightly shocked to see her nephew standing there, "Harry!" She stepped aside with a welcoming gesture, "Come in! Come in!" He hesitantly stepped inside. Remus was fast asleep on bed. He was shirtless and Harry could see a bandage wrapped tightly around his chest.
Alarmed, he turned to his aunt, "What happened?" She was quick with her reply, used to making up excuses for her husband's condition, "Oh, that? I'm afraid he had a bit of a tumble last night when he went looking for a midnight snack. No worries, I fixed him up. Anyways, is there something you wanted to talk about?"
Harry tore his gaze from the werewolf's chest, suddenly remembering he had come to see his aunt to talk about Snape, "Oh, right! Snape assigned us all of this homework and he skipped a lot of chapters in the lesson plan and I was wondering if we still had to do the homework." Anna's eyes widened a little in shock, "He didn't follow the lesson plan?! Did you tell him that we were studying Hinkypinks?" He nodded, "He took points off and gave Ron detention for 'disrespecting him.' I don't even understand how he could've made that mistake! Hinkypinks and werewolves are in completely different- Anna...are you okay? You look angry."
That was an understatement. She was furious. However, she tried to hold back her anger for Harry's sake, "I'm fine. Umm...did you say he was teaching you about werewolves?" He paused, a little confused by his aunt's reaction, "Yeah, he gave us an essay for homework, too. Do we have to do it?"
"What is the essay supposed to be about?" She asked curiously. He thought back to the the potion's master's words, "How to recognize a werewolf and how to kill werewolves." She had to keep herself from gaping in disgust, "Are you joking? Of course not! In fact, forget everything he told you. He probably filled your heads with a bunch if lies. How dare he?! It's OUR class! He had absolutely no right to do what he did! You tell your friends that, if they do do the essay, it will be extra credit. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. Twenty points to Gryffindor!" He smiled, glad that he would not have to do the essay but then his stomach growled.
Anna's frowned, her angry expression instantly switching to motherly concern,"You didn't have to skip lunch to see me Harry! You're probably starving!" He shook his head politely, his cheeks turning pink from concern, "It's okay, really." The stubborn witch waved him to the coffee table, "Nonsense! I'll just conjure up some sandwiches. It's no trouble!" She didn't give him a chance to deny her as she waved her wand and four ham sandwiches appeared on the table with a pitcher of lemonade.
Harry smiled gratefully. He chatted with her as they ate their sandwiches, but soon, it was time for him to go back to class. He bid her goodbye and left her sitting there munching on her ham and cheese sandwich in deep thought, thinking about Severus conduct when teaching her class.
Her trance was broken when a loud snore erupted from the sleeping Remus. She chuckled and decided she could do with a nap herself. Still, her friend was going to get a serious scolding when she awoke.
She changed into comfier clothes (an army green tank top and a pair of grey sweats) Her fox locket bounced gently against her chest as she walked over and fell on the bed beside her husband. He woke up for a moment and sleepily scanned his surroundings with eyes until he spotted her next to him. He smiled warmly and wrapped his arm around her protectively before drifting back to sleep.
The redhead let her eyes fall closed, trying to relax. She took a deep breath and exhaled, letting her body know time rest. It only took a moment before she fell asleep.
*Time Skip*
Anna didn't sit between Remus and Severus like she normally did at breakfast. Instead, she invited Hagrid to sit on her other side, where the Slytherin normally sat. The Potion's master scowled and settled for sitting next to Minerva. Remus didn't complain. He enjoyed Hagrid's company much more than Snape's. Hagrid made cheerful bits of chatter, talking about how big his pumpkins were getting and how he was glad that Remus was feeling better. The werewolf didn't know what Severus did, but he decided to make the most of the man's punishment by being extra affectionate. He knew Anna wouldn't be giving the man the cold shoulder if he didn't deserve it.
Hagrid grinned at them, getting sentimental. He claimed that he had known right from the start that the two Marauders would fall in love eventually. It had just taken longer than expected. Remus hugged his wife in response, "Well, you know what they say! Love works in mysterious ways."
Meanwhile Severus was having trouble keeping his food down as he watched the, quite frankly disgusting, display of affection. He decided he wasn't hungry and stood up briskly. As he stalked past the Hufflepuff table, he could hear some of the students remarking how 'cute' the two professors looked together.
When class started, Remus quickly realized why his wife was so upset with her friend. The git had had the nerve to teach their class about werewolves. He had to bite back a growl to control his anger.
The pair had known they would've eventually had to teach the subject eventually, so they figured they would schedule it near the end of the year so no one would have enough time to make the connection. Also, Anna had exclusively wanted to teach the truth about werewolves. She didn't want the students to think of werewolves as monsters. She wanted to teach about Lycanthropy as if it were a disease. That really was what werewolves were, people with a horrible, untreatable, condition. She had wanted to bring people like her husband into a new light and actually teach Harry's generation a view on werewolves profound and real that no professor has taught.
Not only that, but the students had been taught how to, not only kill a werewolf, but also how to recognize one. It made her blood boil to know that he was more than willing to risk Remus' job and reputation in the wizarding community over some childish feud.
However, it could not be helped now. So they would just have to push on.
Because of the situation, the Lupins decided they would try to make that days Lesson a little more enjoyable. They had managed to get their hands on a Hinkypunk to show the students for the lesson. It was in a glass cage so the class could view it easily. Hinkypunks were fascinating. They were little, one-legged wisps of smoke that were known for luring travelers off his or her path. The kids seemed to enjoy he lesson. Though they were probably just happy Snape was not subbing anymore.
After class, Remus called Harry over and Anna left. She and her husband had talked about this. They had decided that Harry needed to learn to fight against Dementors. Anna had immediately told the werewolf that he should take on the job instead of her. Remus had been shocked but he knew why he was the best choice for the job. Remus didn't have a problem with fainting around Dementors and she wanted the two men to spend some time bonding. That way, when they told Harry about Remus's condition, he would be more likely to accept his uncle for what he was.
So, as an excuse, he had offered to take on border patrol for Dumbledore. But, unbeknownst to Remus. She had different motives for doing so. It was something that she had been wanting to do ever since she had encountered Fluffy in the Forbidden Forest.
She was going to find Sirius Black and get some answers.
AN: Did you like it? How do you think Anna's confrontation with Sirius will go? Any predictions? What would you like to see more of? Tell me in the comments!
