UNKNOWN

The truth. The truth was unknown, a secret, unthinkable. Only the parents knew. They had to find a way to tell. The warm morning broke the chill of the night. The kiss of the blinding morning sun woke Kerry up. She slipped into her baby blue fluffy slippers and stepped out of her room. The previously plain and dull colored living room was transformed into an art museum. Kerry stood there, mouth agape as she looked at the beautiful room. Big banners were hung all over, screaming the words "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" There was a beautiful triple layered cake sitting on the clean white table.   Isolated from the rest. Time flew by fast. Soon, Kerry's friends flooded the room. They all gave her their nicely wrapped gifts and caringly, she place them on the table. Not long after, it was time to cut the cake. Her friends wished her a happy birthday as they sang the birthday song. Closing her eyes, Kerry made her wish. "I wish. I wish to know who I really am." Smiling, she blew out her candles and her friends cheered. They sat in a circle eager for her to open up her presents. Slowly, one by one, Kerry ripped out the wrappers. "Rippppp".  She held the present in her hands.  It was like holding a holy bible.  She rubbed her eyes, was she dreaming?  Pinching herself, she realized it was true, all her friends has put together all their money to get her a computer.  Kerry loved coding, loved the wonders the internet could bring her, and she was utterly amazed but the beautiful computer.  Her eyes watered as a single tear fell gently from her eyes.  She smiled as she ran over to her friends hugging them.  A feeling of happiness aroused in her as she felt the need to jump up and down getting all the happiness and enthusiasm out of her.

At around the same time on the other side of the world

The sound of keys jingling signaled the arrival of Jane.  "Ugggg!!!"  The moment She set foot in the house, she threw her bag on the marbled ground as she dragged her tired feet up the stairs.  She stepped into her room. It seem rather quiet today. Usually, her mom would be down stairs with the TV on and her sister would be doing her HW. By doing HW, her sister says the sentences or questions out loud. When she flickered the lights on, to her surprise, her whole family jumped out from their hiding spot and sang the birthday song. A wide smile had spread across her face. After the song, they ambled down stairs to cut the cake. She closed her eyes and made her wish. Looking at her family, she thanked them. But, her parents had nervous etched in their forehead as they instructed her sister to go and sleep while they brought her to the couch. They sat her down, not knowing how to start. Looking at each other uncertainty, they gave her a scared smile.

"Jane, we need to tell you something." Her parents spoke, with stern faces. She looked at them with a confused expression. As they proceeded with the next sentence.

"You know how you're adopted, well, you have a twin sister and this is who your real parents are," they handed over the phone with a picture of the most wanted criminals of all time. Jane stared at it in shock.

"No. No. No. No. Noooooooooo!" Her thoughts screamed at her, as images of her biological parents flashed in her head.  She shook her head violently, not wanting to take it in. "This can't be! No!!!! Why me, I wanted a proper family, I never wanted to know this!" Her eyes spelled malice as she gritted her teeth.

"Please Jane, you're older now, you have to know at some point, we can't just keep something like this from you can we?" Her parents tried to reason with her, to no avail.

"Don't touch me!  You're a monster!" Jane screeched "I don't deserve this, what have I done to deserve this?  Did you have to tell me this, and out of all times, my birthday?"  She demanded an  answer.  It was impossible to get her to quiet down.  She was a monster.  She wanted to have a proper family, and normal family.  Slamming her fist on the small coffee table, she stopped up to her room screaming behind her "You are the worst!  I hate all of you!  Don't ever talk to me again!"  Her voice trailed off.  Hearing a slam of the door, followed by cursing.  Her parent looked at each other, eyes filled with sadness, as they looked down at their feet.

Back in NYC....

"Bye guys, see you on Monday!"  Kerry called out to her friends as she waved them goodbye.  The house that was just filled with noisy chatter, was now as quiet as a examination hall.

"Kerry, come sit here," her parent motioned her to come and sit with them.  Kerry walked over without question.

"Kerry, you know your adopted right?"  They started  Kerry nodded her head in response.

"Well, you have a twin on the other side of the world, and umm, well..."  They stammered, not knowing how to continue.  Kerry's eyes widened with curiosity.

"What is it?"  Kerry urged her parent to carry on.

"These, is your real parents."  They handed over a phone, refusing to let go. Kerry wanted to know.  She took the phone and looked at it.  She was in utter shock.  Her eyes darted from her mom to her dad, not know what to do next.  Sadness knocked her down as she fell into her mom's arms.  Her tears fell uncontrollably like a waterfall.

"Is this real?  This is who I really am?"  Kerry thought, a mixed feeling of anger, fear, and insecurity banged her.  She was never taking this in.  EVER!!
